  • "We were extremely disappointed by the property."

To be fair the location is good , the shower room reasonably clean and the peat fire enjoyable however the general air of neglect and filth inside the cottage is not. There is a revolting stench in the small kitchen which can only be described as sour, stale vomit. The cooker is in a very dangerous condition, the hot plates are encrusted with rust and one switch on the left turns on all four hotplates. Having to pay for electricity, hot water and heating by meter effectively increases the weekly rate.

  • "Granny Kate's is an authentic cottage in a beautiful location."

It's an unforgettable experience. Bathroom very good, bedrooms comfortable and living room perfect. The kitchen, the smallest in Donegal it says, would be perfect if it had more efficient electric hobs. Beware, you'll have to put in coins to run the heating and electricity. Showers are free.

  • "We loved everything about this place and would book again in a heartbeat."

The small booklet about the house written by Peter the owner explains its history, value and significance well and we are deeply grateful that the owner has maintained this remarkable place for others to experience. It is truly extraordinary and magical. We tuned into 92 FM daily to listen to the Irish language and music show on the radio which added to the atmosphere of timelessness that the cottage creates. Just a small suggestion :). Please make it clearer in the information that coins are needed for the power. Thanks to Mary for mentioning this in her messages so we were prepared. We were so busy before leaving Australia and managing lots of different accommodation for a long trip that we did not read all the details and would not expect a coin meter for the power, so perhaps just make this more prominent in the information as we could have turned up with no coins late at night which would have been difficult. Thanks.

  • "Granny Kate's Cottage is a very special treasured find that I without hesitation will return to."

When first opening the gate and setting foot I was instantly transported to another time. The owner has given a lot of thought on maintaining the original features of the cottage with the experience of living authentically. The grounds have been landscaped and created earnestly which has given that extra magic while you explore and discover hidden spots on the land to sit and take in. The cottage's surrounding beauty with the additional Glengesh Pass backdrop gives that extra unique comfort when having your evening meal outside or breakfast. The location will also be especially appealing to keen cyclists and hikers, who have quick access to explore beyond Glengesh Pass and travel to Slieve Liag, Silver Strand, Glencolmcille, Teelin Pier and many more spots I must still discover. With the additional sounds of sheep bleating in the distance and the mystical cuckoo, if you want to rest and escape, Granny Kate's is a must. I'm really looking forward to returning.

  • "Absolutely fantastic to be able to stay in such an historic and original property, it’s beautiful and we loved the place."

I would I only mark down in a few places - the shower tray is so slow to drain you have to turn the water off to drain midway through your shower or it’ll overflow, so that was a chilly few minutes waiting for that a couple of times per shower. A mouse kept appearing in the kitchen bin - not a problem in itself and expected in a property of its age - the only thing there was that when I wiped the kitchen floor after the mouse had been put out I found that the floor was really dirty and needed a proper clean. Good selection of board games… but all with bits missing which was quite annoying, a few jigsaws and complete games to pass a cold wet evening would be a good addition. Oh and no tin opener to be found anywhere. Minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning. None of this detracted from the loveliness of the cottage. The bed was comfy, hot water bottles were a lovely and useful touch. If we were going to Ireland again we would definitely rebook.

  • "As someone who is interested in history I was looking for a traditional Irish cottage to stay in rather than the many bland properties that are available and I wasn't disappointed with 'Granny Kate's'."

I loved the attention to detail in the cottage, the old valve radio, the superbly crafted chairs and of course the turf fire with an abundance of fuel. The property was well placed to explore all the fantastic nooks and corners in the area, beautiful deserted beaches, megalithic tombs, the mountains and the town of Ardara, the highlight of which was probably 'Nancys' bar and seafood restaurant.

  • "The cottage is like stepping back in time."

It is a very quiet peaceful place with wonderful views. The bed we slept in was very comfortable, double in the family room. The views are fantastic. Suggest that people take their slippers for indoors and dig out some of their favourite old c.ds to listen too while in the cottage. Do use the peat fire. Take euro coins both €1 and €2 euro coins. Wont need a lot but you will need to put the heating on for an hour or so during the evening and first thing (we stayed last week in September) the taxi to and from the villiage isnt expensive and everyone seems to be very helpful and friendly. They do provide towels, and the shower while noisy is lovely and hot. You might want to get dried quickly. Weather was changable has it was late September so to be expected but if you are lucky enough to book in the summer when the weather is better then just let the peace roll over you and enjoy the views from the picnic table and enjoy slowing right down.

We were transported back in time to a simpler time. With little to do (because of the rain) but relax we came back a lot more rested. I would definitely recommend upgrading the mattresses and adding some cushions though. Other than that we had a lovely time.

Heat and electric were coin op, these should be included in the price of the stay as the electric went out on 9am of the day of our 11am check and we had to pack by flashlight, not great also airbnb is waaaay ahead of you guys in hospitality, we stayed at a similar cottage and it had a TV, free scones and a bottle of wine, the host set the heating before he left and gave us a tour, your place had the keys left in the door, 1 firestarter that didn't do the trick because the peat wasn't dry (so I had to run to the station before it closed) and he coin op heat only took 1 euro coins, no cards or other currency not a great way to start a holiday and really lost me points with the missus, get your act together guys, its a beautiful location, just include the heat and electricity and increase the price the extra tenner

About the location

ARDARA, COUNTY DONEGAL

Donegal Town 17 miles; Derry Airport 54 miles.

Ardara, voted by The Irish Times as one of the 'best villages to live in' in 2012, is one of the most attractive towns in Donegal, set in a wide valley where the Owentocher River enters Loughros More Bay. Visitors can enjoy the many craft and gift shops, together with the traditional Irish pubs. There are many brown trout lakes in the area for budding fisherman, or why not discover the nearby caves and falls of Maghera? Enjoy walking the magnificent Glengesh Pass, with spectacular views over the Atlantic from Loughros Point. Every March, the village hosts a successful walking festival with walkers coming from all over the world, while May boasts the annual “Cup of Tae” traditional music festival. Donegal town, 17 miles away, is situated at the mouth of Donegal Bay, on the River Eske, and is overshadowed by the Bluestack Mountains, which provide a great base for hill walking. With Donegal Castle, and the remains of a Franciscan Abbey which dates back to the 15th century, there is plenty of Irish history to absorb. There is a horse riding centre just one mile away, great golfing opportunities nearby, with a magnificent links course open for players of all abilities just seven miles away, and five miles away is Killybegs Sea Angling, where a competition is held on the first Saturday in May and September each year, along with the Killybegs International Sea Angling Festival, which is a two day event on the second weekend in July. Also 20 miles away is the wonderful Slieve League mountain, which has a height of 601 metres (1972 feet) and is situated on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal. With its sandy beaches offering good surfing conditions, restaurants, shops and pubs, this is the perfect base for an Irish break.
