  • "We had a lovely stay at Robyn Cottage."

It is warm, comfortable, well equipped and beautifully clean. We were always able to park right outside. The safe, enclosed garden was great for the dogs. Otterton is a fabulous village. The riverside walks are a complete joy. Both the pub and the mill have great service, fabulous food and a welcoming atmosphere. The only downside was the renovation work going on next door. It started at 8am every day. We would have preferred to have known about this and given the opportunity of rebooking. I had finished cancer treatment 2 days before our stay and needed lie ins. Once this has finished we would definitely give Robyn Cottage 5 stars.

Oh no, this is awful, I am so sorry. I wish I had known as I could have done something about it. The chap next door had assured me that any noise will be made when guests are out and he is very nice and would have worked round you. I was under the impression that most of the noisy work was done a few months ago. I do hope you will come again one day and we can make it up to you. Property Owner

  • "Robyn Cottage is a really lovely place to stay - very cosy, very comfy and well furnished with everything we needed for a pleasant week in Devon."

The location in the middle of Otterton is perfect, with a local shop, pub and the mill all within walking distance. The garden was great to sit out in on the good days, and we made use of the fire on the chilly evenings. Lovely welcome to find wine in the fridge too! Only thing to be aware of - parking is on-street, which is to be expected for a small village like this, and the road can be quite busy. It's all explained in the listing and by the lovely owner, Lesley! There's a bus stop right next to the front door though, which is incredibly useful for trips over to Sidmouth or Budleigh / Exmouth - buses are hourly throughout the day. Would definitely recommend a stay in Robyn Cottage if you're visiting this lovely part of Devon!

  • "Although the cottage looks spotless in-between the cushions on the sofas it was full of dirt dust and hair otherwise it was ok."

The shower was electric and not a very good one I'm 6'2'' tall and had to bend right over to wash my hair. Robyn cottage is in a lovely little village with a good pub and a community shop which is open most of the time also a mill shop and cafe serving excellent food. We enjoyed the walks along the river and coast and our dog was welcome everywhere. Overall a good experience.

Oh dear, I am very sorry you were unhappy with a couple of things. We shall certainly do something about checking the sofa. The shower is one of the best electric showers you can get (Miras) and we have always had excellent reviews regarding the shower. Maybe you had it set to Eco, or maybe the head was adjusted down to minimum when you used it. I have always felt that electric is more reliable than through the taps. Please note there is also a very good quality hand held shower on the bath tap that you can use through the hot water system with a long flexi hose. So hopefully everything is covered. PS.We even have a hose pipe in the garden with hot and cold for showering off dogs. I am very pleased it didn’t ruin your enjoyment of the village and surrounding areas, and the rest of the cottage. • "We found the cottage to be clean, tidy, cosy, comfortable and well equipped."

With bonus of enclosed garden for our 2 small dogs. Some great walks near the cottage, our favourite being along the river behind the mill. You can walk to the coast on the river path. Couple of really great National trust near by. Plenty of pretty villages and towns to visit. Plus dog friendly pubs. A very good fish and chip shop in next village, only 5 mins drive from cottage. The wooden stairs are a little steep, typical style for a cottage, which may be difficult for those with mobility problems. We will definitely go back as there is so much to see.

Most importantly therefore, yes, the property and all the kitchen utensils were perfectly clean. Did everything work? Yes, and better we heard from Lesley in advance that the hairdryer didn’t so made alternative arrangements. Better than that, although we actually took a bag of our own logs and kindling, there was a good supply at the property, useful as the weather was a bit damp for our week. Other incidentals that visitors might like to know, at the time of our visit, the village pub, the Kings Arms, was open everyday serving decent food and importantly, four well kept cask ales and there’s a community shop, open for essentials. Information on everything else, walking and local attractions for example, of which there is obviously plenty of both, is found elsewhere.

  • "Could not fault the cottage."

It was exceptionally clean, comfortable, well equipped and situated in a very friendly village. Our only criticism is the 'extras' that Sykes added onto the original price quoted i.e. booking fee, charge for using credit card etc.

  • "Robyn cottage is ideally located for walkers of all abilities."

The scenery locally is very pleasant and varied, from the river Otter walks to the coastal path. There is a very useful community run shop in Otterton and local pub which welcomes dogs. The village is ideally located for visits to Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth both of which are easily accessible by bus, car and for those more energetic by foot.

The property

Otterton is a pretty village in one of Devon's most beautiful coastal valleys between the stylish Regency town of Sidmouth and the Victorian resort of Budleigh Salterton.

On the approach to the village is Otterton Mill, a working water mill powered by the River Otter, around which has grown up a cafe serving delicious food, an exhibition gallery showing local arts and crafts and a venue where popular music nights take place.

In Otterton is Robin Cottage, a Grade II listed thatched property full of character and utterly charming.

Everything here has been carefully chosen, in the comfortable lounge there is a wood burning stove and the smart kitchen/diner which has a tiled floor and wooden table and chairs overlooks the garden.

A wooden spiral staircase leads to two very pretty bedrooms, a double with views over the garden towards the hills beyond and a second smaller bedroom at the front of the cottage.

The sheltered garden is enclosed and laid to lawn with a small patio area, table and chairs.

The beach at Ladram Bay is only half a mile away, here pale grey shingle contrasts against the deep, rich, red cliffs and you can join the South Devon Coast Path.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

OTTERTON

Budleigh Salterton 3 miles; Sidmouth 3 miles.

Set back from the coast among the rolling green countryside and wooded valleys of beautiful East Devon, this pretty village with its collection of traditionally thatched roofed cottages is straight from a picture postcard. Offering a quieter but no less beautiful holiday destination than the rest of the county it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind, and is just 3 miles from the Regency coastal resort towns of both Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth, and one mile from the SW Coastal Path as it meanders above the waves towards the World Heritage Site ‘Jurassic Coast’ beaches with their abundant fossils. Ladram Bay with its red-stone sea stacks is just one mile away. Inland, footpaths follow the banks of the River Otter where fox, badger and birdlife play while just down the road from the village is Bicton Park and Botanical Gardens, 60 acres of garden lovers’ paradise. For a really interesting hour or two, visit the last working flour mill on the river Otter - it’s in the village and the flour is superb. There’s much to do and see in this beautiful and unspoilt area but if you want to explore further afield, the open spaces and high tors of Dartmoor can be reached in under an hour while the Cathedral city of Exeter with its superb shopping centre, cinemas, clubs and restaurants is a mere 10 miles.

Note: Care is needed on wooden stairs to first floor. Parking is on road, however there are no restrictions and you can usually park just outside the cottage.
