  • "We had a fantastic stay at the cottage and would love to come back!"

  • "The Bake House is a gem of a property, tucked away on the outskirts of a peaceful hamlet 3 or 4 miles from Chagford."

Simply put, it has a lovely, welcoming feel to it. Everything is high quality. The cottage is very well equipped, warm and cosy (the underfloor heating is great), and has been tastefully converted. The bedrooms and bathroom are a good size. The kitchen-living area is compact, great for a couple, but four adults may find it a little small. There are walks straight from the door (do visit the Scorhill Stone Circle). Chagford is charming and has everything one could wish for - a great deli, four pubs, a fruit and veg shop, traditional ironmonger's, butcher, two bakers, a good wine shop, pharmacy, two craft galleries, a selection of cafes and a superb independent bookshop. Oh, and a warm welcome from everyone one meets. We will definitely be back.

We had forgotten some essential things for our trip, they helped us out with this, and also when we had a problem with a car. A lovely property and location.

The mattress in the master bedroom completely worn out and needs replacing. The mattress in the smaller bedroom not much better ,also needs replacing.it was a pleasant stay the marks would have been higher the mattresses let it down.

We are disappointed with the feedback that you published & a little surprised as we have had no negative comments regarding the beds. We pride ourselves in providing a special experience for all our guests. However we have taken your concerns seriously & taken remedial action Property Owner

  • "The cottage is supposed to be able to cater for 4 people, yet the downstairs accommodation is TINY and you would have to start moving the furniture around if 4 people wanted to sit at the table!"

We always go for extra space when booking a cottage (there were only 2 of us), yet even with just the two of us it felt very constrained downstairs - often we were squeezing past each other in the kitchen area. The cottage was VERY spidery - cobwebs everywhere and large harvestman spiders had to be regularly removed. If you had a fear of spiders (which I do) this would be a nightmare. A good regular vacuum using the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner would sort this out.

Thank you for your feedback. Spiders in historic houses can be a perpetual issue and we do endeavour to keep on top of it with our regular cleaning regime. We confirm that this has now been attended to and we will be more cautious in future. The cottage is compact, as mentioned on the website, yet over the last 13 years we have had positive feedback from guests, be it two or more, who have enjoyed their stay at the cottage. The cottage is nestled on the edge of the high moor, with great walks right on your doorstep. The walk through the fields and down the lane to the pub, with a sky full of stars was a highlight. Beautiful spot, wonderful cottage and very friendly and helpful owner. It helped that the weather was as good as it was, and returning from our walks to light the log burner, making hot chocolate and snuggling down and watching the night draw in was simply perfect.

  • "Beautiful cottage in amazing location off the beaten track."

    |Takes a long time to get anywhere!! Owners really friendly and helpful. We had a brilliant week despite decidedly changeable weather. The property is tiny - which we hadn't appreciated from the description. Despite that it's amazingly well equipped and the main bedroom upstairs is beautifully airy. Only real gripe was that it felt very dusty on arrival. We suffer with allergies and always go for a non pet friendly property so were a bit dismayed to be sneezing. However a good hoover of the sofas sorted that out.

It was well-equipped and was great to read about its history. The owners were very friendly and helpful and our son loved seeing the chickens being fed. The wildlife is amazing, and even on a rainy Devon day you could have coffee on the south-facing porch and stay dry and warm. We hope to be back.
