  • "The estate and remote location was lovely, however, Terrace Suite property is suffering!"

Tired furniture; e.g. sticky arms on seats and mattress very soft and lumpy. Cleaning could be improved; e.g. dirt in corners of rooms, under cushions, and across the headboard, hair in bedding and towels, there was even a half-eaten biscuit on the floor under one of the chairs, broken hour glass in kids toy bucket and some essential kitchen utensils are past their best. Hot water tap in the kitchen has very low pressure and wasn't really usable - thankfully the kettle worked! Worth noting that both swimming pools were below expectation and clearly not regularly maintained - indoor pool had a dust film across the top and thicker layer of powder like dirt in the bottom and the outdoor pool had 2 dead frogs, a newt, slugs and leaves in it. DVD selection was thoughtful as network connection and TV signal was intermittent. It was helpful to have a large selection of local guide leaflets to review and sort through. Certainly advise any potential guests to look on google satellite view to find the exact location and review the surrounding roads, which are hilly, and some extremely narrow with limited passing places. If you want a quiet getaway surrounded by nature and away from technology, this is a lovely spot - you will see lots of birds including woodpecker, house martins, pheasant and buzzard, there are rabbits, squirrels and even potential to see deer. (Recommend either bringing supplies or getting a supermarket delivery booked on your first day to avoid the stress of navigating local roads unnecessarily).

Nicely furnished, good facilities. Only things missing were hot running water in the kitchen and some dishwashing tablets to start our holiday. Pity the charging stations weren’t functional yet. But the pool was great and the landscape spectacular. Enjoyed ourselves immensely

  • "We booked this holiday for us and our 3 children."

It was our son’s first birthday on the Thursday so we envisioned playing in the pool all day as he is a true water baby and our older children also love the pool. We arrived to find the indoor pool out of use as the heater had broken so it was freezing cold. We called coast and country who informed us it wasn’t due to be fixed until Feb! They told us the outdoor pool is fine to be used. We informed them it was filthy, green and full of slugs they told us that it was fine to go in and nobody would be coming to clean it. I wouldn’t allow the children in it due to the filth but my partner went in. He found a newt, lots of algae and came out covered in slugs. He came down with a bacterial infection the next day requiring antibiotics which completely ruined the holiday to be honest. The property is very very remote and is atleast a 40 minute drive to get to anything decent for the children to do. There is a beach close by but it is shingle and not sand and is not safe for the kids to paddle but is very picturesque. Paignton was a good beach for the kids but is a 40 minute drive away. There are no takeaways you can order and no nearby places to eat that we could find. The roads in and out are really not great to drive and we couldn’t safely walk on them with a pram so nearby walks were off the cards (we should’ve planned and brought a baby carrier so we could walk off-road) We thought from the listing that there would be more nearby however that is our fault for not researching thoroughly. The remoteness would’ve been fine had the pool been in order. The games room was also only for over 16s which we didn’t realise upon booking. Our eldest child did enjoy the tennis court though. The grounds are truly stunning and the property itself was well equipped with board games and books for the children. It was well maintained inside and the views couldn’t be faulted. The tv did not work and so we had to watch DVDs which wasn’t a problem as there were lots of them to choose from and the kids quite liked the novelty of this. There is no phone signal which we didn’t mind but could be a problem for others. The laundry room and sauna are all coin operated so bring coins should you wish to use these. I think this property would be great for a couple who could enjoy local walks and relaxing however, it was not right for our family due to the remoteness of the property and the very disappointing facilities. If you book do not book for the pool as we were so disappointed. We actually left one day early which was such a shame - we had all looked forward to this holiday for a long time and we left deflated.

  • "We very much enjoyed our week's holiday in Sheplegh Court and would highly recommend your apartment to everyone."

The extensive grounds are just stunning with wonderful country walks around parkland and woods. The peace and tranquility were the highlight of the week's stay. Although some of the walks are strenuous up quite steep hills, the variety of plants and trees are remarkable. There are many Oriental and foreign species that would be hard to equal in such a beautiful place.

We can just shut off from the daily stresses there. The beds were so comfy, the bunk bed has a new mattress which was so much better. Even though the weather was not great all the time we were still able to explore with walks around Start Point, Hope Cove, Dartmouth Castle, Dittisham and more. Would recommend the Wheelhouse in Dartmouth for fish and chips.

  • "A repeat booking is in itself a recommendation, and this year we were really happy to return to The Terrace Suite."

Sheplegh Court is historic, old, charming, unique, quirky and beautiful; hidden away down a quiet rural road. The stunning grounds include a heated outdoor pool and a tennis court as well as lots of bats flying around in the evening and owls hooting at night. The accommodation is lovely including a very comfortable master bedroom, 2 bathrooms, and living room patio doors opening directly onto the lovely gardens. It is tastefully decorated throughout. Super helpful owners. Lots of useful guidebooks. Ideal for a tranquil and quiet holiday (people live at Sheplegh so one needs to be a respectful visitor) and it’s a real gem that is like stepping back in time. This visit we enjoyed lovely food at The Church House Inn (Stokenham) and The Anchorstone Café (Dittisham), walks near Dartmouth, watched the Plymouth national fireworks championship and enjoyed a trip to the gardens of Coleton Fishacre. The only reason for marking the facilities and maintenance down a tiny bit was to ensure that it's clear that it is not a spotless new-build shiny hotel; but rather a genuine old country house with little quirks that give it lots of character. A lovely holiday.

  • "We had a fabulous time at Sheplegh Court - the definitive hidden gem!"

We loved the clean and comfortable accommodation - all as described in the pre-booking info. It was also great to find excellent children’s books and toys available, plus an extensive range of books, DVDS and useful items like maps etc available for all. We all loved the heated(!) outdoor pool, the tennis court and the beautiful grounds. We had a really wonderful time there and exploring beautiful south Devon. We would certainly recommend! Just a few points that would be great to address in future: - there were a few stubborn flies in the kitchen. We didn’t try to kill them but something that could be sorted - the indoor swimming pool was out of action which was a shame and wasn’t the case at the time of booking. No compensation was offered to us for this. - Netflix wasn’t available as the account holders hadn’t paid the bill (according to onscreen messaging). - there was a musty smell in the property upon arrival - tricky to address in old buildings.

  • "It was difficult finding location as satnav took us to farmstead before premises so had to ask directions."

We knew the lanes were going to be narrow but wouldn't travel there again. The accommodation was clean and comfortable but we had several problems with electrics and TV. We mng'd to work the TV before the electrician came but he didn't arrive until we rang Sykes 3 times from Sunday 25/09/22 (spoke to 3 different customer service personnel and none bothered to phone back to see how we were or tell us an electrician would be visiting) as we had problems with switching the hob/oven on, the dishwasher wasn't working, the extractor fans in kitchen and bathrooms didn't switch off causing constant noise. The electrician arrived Tues 27/09 @ 4.45pm he managed to work the hob/oven from makers instruction booklet mostly in foreign languages (no instructions in Helpful Holidays folder). He couldn't get dishwasher working only to measure up for new one(we heard no more about replacement). The extractor fan constantly working the electrician took cover off which switched off and found a pull cord tucked away, he advised that owners must have set up not to be able to switch off therefore put cover back to start it again. As we're not electricians we couldn't stop the extractor fans. I also advised the electrician that the radiator in bedroom wasn't working although managed to check thermostat which seemed to start heat the radiator never got warm in main bedroom. We relied on towel rail but as drying damp towels wasn't much use to heat large bedroom. I also mentioned when speaking to last customer service person who was a man the outside patio area was neglected as weeds IE thistles growing on boarder about 2' tall & planter tubes not planted up so looked neglected. We decided to book here for peace and quiet but because of noise from extractor fans that wasn't possible we had to play music to mask the noise by playing music or switch TV on. The main grounds were well kept but unable to use outside swimming pool although weather beginning of week was lovely. Indoor swimming pool is more of a plunge pool. We found that the sauna only needs £1 not £2 as suggested. Overall not a good experience.

  • "A delightful return visit to this lovely apartment."

Set in the quiet countryside near Dartmouth, this old, historic hidden gem is secluded and off the beaten track. It's communal entrance hallway is reminiscent of a bygone age with old stained glass windows and a sweeping staircase. The apartment itself it has been thoroughly modernised but keeps all the beautiful period features such as wooden shutters and high ceilings. Comfy big bed. Well appointed kitchen. Good hot shower. Ground floor terrace leads directly out to the gorgeous grounds. A friendly courtesy phonecall half way through the holiday from coastandcountry. Fall asleep listening to the owl and watching bats. Bear in mind it's an old country house therefore it is quite quirky and unique, and sharing the property with the owner-occupiers means everyone treats the grounds with greatest of respect. Loved having the outdoor pool and the addition of the table tennis near the outdoor tennis court was a great idea. Thank you to our lovely and fabulous hosts, what a pleasure to rent their property! Tip to owners: would be handy if possible to be left a couple more cleaning products on site as we like to return it as neat as possible. Thanks, we had a smashing time!

  • "Apartment was much bigger than the photos suggested!"

Was ideal for our needs. Outdoor pool was fantastic as were the tennis courts. Indoor pool wasn’t very inviting- shame they had filled in the jacuzzi with plants. Didn’t feel very clean, nor did the pool room. Shame there wasn’t more information on the history of the building! We found out it played a massive role in the D Day landings planning. Also we didn’t realise how demanding the local roads were, we all got travel sick quite bad (and we’re used to driving in the alps) - there didn’t seem to be a simple route to the main road. I think that needs to be highlighted more so on booking as you have to drive to Dartmouth to get food supplies at least, and less confident drivers will find the narrow routes quite challenging. The local shop in Blackawton was well stocked and the local pub was lovely.

  • "In general the communal areas looked old, worn out and not very clean."

The photos had a better impression of the place than it actually is. The facilities, the outdoor and indoor swimming pools were good to have but they didn't look clean, especially the cheap plastic chairs out by the pool. We were looking forward to having breakfast/brunch on the patio of the flat enjoying the green grounds but unfortunately we didn't know that the hub was an induction hub requiring special frying pans/pots which wouldn't work with the pans that we brought (gas hub back at home). The only frying pan available was covered with rust and probably an health hazard which prevented us from having cooked breakfast at the flat. It was also unexpected not to have basics such as salt, pepper, sugar, tea bags and kitchen towels available in the flat; even the loo rolls were rationed at one in each bathroom for a whole week. We always take our own tea bags and ground coffee but never had a cottage holiday with these not being provided as courtesy. The location was close to the some very nice beaches that we enjoyed spending time at but there were not many facilities e.g. takeaway available near by. The equipment provided not being up to cooking standards did not help either. In summary, it was an average experience with its pluses and minuses and if it wasn't due to Covid, we probably wouldn't have had a holiday here.

  • "Nice spacious apartment, comfortable lounge."

Photos don't show the fridge in the corner which is a spacious one. Good facilities, appreciated that some cleaning items had been left. Also other kitchen equipment is provided which is not stated in the description, very useful to have. Lovely grounds... quite picturesque and hilly for a good mini workout when walking! Friendly occupants in the other properties. Only 14 minutes drive to the lovely Blackpool Sands beach - lots of visitors there but really peaceful! People just relaxing in their own private way. We discovered Slapton Sands beach towards the end of our stay, a long stretch of beach and a nature reserve freshwater lake area called Slapton Leys. This South Hams region is definitely an area of beauty which is a great reflection of our Creator's blessings. Highly recommend Sheplegh Court, but the top bunk in the second bedroom probably needs a newer mattress.

Terrace Suite is part of a group of apartments created within the wondrous manor house of Sheplegh Court, resting within its own luscious grounds and providing guests with the luxuries of an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and private sections of patio too.

Come into your secluded spot and into the entrance hallway before finding your way to the living room/diner, a place of calm and relaxation for you to return to, enjoying views from the French doors of the sweeping communal lawns, with a light and bright interior to keep you refreshed as you sit on the armchairs or sofa.

Next door is the kitchen which holds an electric oven and hob, so you can readily rustle up some delicious dishes, and not worry about the washing up with the aid of a dishwasher; find a helpful communal laundry room, which is great for those longer stays.

High ceilings and original features like the charming window shutters remind you of the age of this vintage property, adding a characterful charm.

In the evening head to your bedroom of choice; choose from the master king-size which benefits from an en-suite shower room, along with a pretty and coordinated interior decor, or the bunk room, which can be great for children or friends.

Freshen up in the bathroom which holds a bath with a shower over, so you can have a speedy shower or a long soak, it's up to you!

Sit out in the evening and take in the last moments of a summer day from the comfort of your patio area just outside of the living room/diner, with views over the gardens and pond, and the rolling fields beyond, it offers a tranquil spot.

If you can tear yourself away from this South Hams haven and you have little ones, then make your first trip be to visit the exciting Woodlands Family Theme Park, where there are indoor and outdoor play areas, water rides, a zoo farm, and a falconry centre - plenty to keep everyone busy and entertained!

The wondrous Blue Flag awarded beach of Blackpool Sands is under 5-miles away by car, offering a picturesque shingle beach in a sheltered bay thanks to the evergreens and pines behind it, stay here all day and grab something to eat at the Venus Beach Cafe.

For a day of bustling atmosphere and scenic harbour and sea views, head to the town of Dartmouth, take walks along the River Dart, grab fish and chips by the harbour and explore the museums and galleries which tell the rich heritage of this picture-perfect setting.
