  • "Appletree Cottage was outstanding in all areas."

The owners were in touch with us a couple of weeks before we were due, it was a very traditional thatched English cottage that was spotless inside on arrival, the kitchen was high spec with everything we would have in our own kitchen, the beds were comfortable and so we settled in very quickly. We appreciated the treats and the availability of enough logs and kindling to enjoy the wood-burner whilst we were there. It really did feel like being in someone's home (as opposed to a rental property), and being treated as appreciated guests. Thank you!

We're delighted you enjoyed your stay and thank you for taking the time to write this review. We try to make sure that guests are always made to feel welcome, and this starts from the moment they walk through the door. Since we also like to spend time in Apple Tree, we make sure that whatever we need is also available for our guests - including all the kitchen equipment we ourselves use when we cook. Thank you for taking such good care of Apple Tree and you'd be most welcome to come again. David and Hilary Property Owner

  • "Property is truly unique with loads of character."

The cottage and the yard are like being in a fairytale. Cottage is very well equipped and has everything you need. With proximity to Bovey Tracy and Newton Abbot you have access to all amenities. Finding the cottage and navigating the access driveway was a bit challenging.

Thank you for the lovely feedback and we're very pleased you enjoyed your stay. The cottage itself is a listed building, along with others in the terrace, and so has preserved its character over the years. It really is a 'chocolate box' cottage in the heart of the countryside. It's location in rural Devon does mean that lanes can be narrow - they were made for a horse and cart originally - and unfortunately we can't do much to change that. But it also means that it's beautifully quiet with very little traffic. Sometimes I think we get more horses than cars passing up and down the front of the cottage. Hopefully the peace and quiet more than made up for the challenge! David and Hilary Property Owner

The cottage is absolutely beautiful, all the furnishing are of the highest standard and very comfortable. We absolutely loved the garden and all its seating areas. We we very lucky with the weather and had most of our meals outside. We were sorry to leave such a wonderful cottage. We would definitely stay here again. Having all the information at hand including all the appliance instructions was most helpful. The owners (David and Hilary) contacted us to make sure we arrived okay and stayed in touch to make sure we had no problems. Thank you so much from Alan & Diane

Dear Alan and Diane, thank you so much for the lovely review of your recent stay in Appletree. We're always delighted to hear when guests have enjoyed their stay. Amanda and her team of gardeners have done a great job in the garden and each of the seating areas has its own special interest. They recently built a small fern garden at the back of the house using some old timber posts from a recent renovation. Cheryl, our housekeeper, also does a great job and we'll share your feedback with everyone who helps to make Appletree such a special place. You'd be most welcome to come again! Property Owner

  • "Beautiful, well equipped cottage with a lovely garden, quiet and peaceful, yet close to moors, coast, country pubs and towns."

We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit and managed to see the garden at a different time of the year. This year Amanda and her team of gardeners have created a new section in the back garden using old timbers from our front porch, which we had to have replaced, to create a small area of ferns and flowering plants. It's a work of garden art! We realise that we're stewards of a very lovely cottage, parts of which have been here for over 200 years. We try to improve it year on year, and get great pleasure when guests enjoy their stay as much as we do when we come to Appletree ourselves. We look forward to seeing you again in the future and thank you for taking the time to post a review. David and Hilary Property Owner

  • "Fabulous cottage and quality of kitchen equipment brilliant comfortable beds nice linen host are brilliant nothing to much trouble a bottle of prosecco was left for our arrival which was a lovely touch."

The gardens are beautiful with several seating areas. The only issue we had was no toilet upstairs which was a nuisance as going down the stairs in middle of night when not fully awake was not the best.

Thank you for the lovely feedback and we're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We try hard to make sure our guests have a wonderful time and are happy to be of help. When we stay in Appletree we do a lot of cooking - hence all the equipment! We'll pass on your kind comments to Town and Country, who take care of our laundry, to Cheryl, our wonderful housekeeper, and to Amanda and her great team of gardeners. We take care to ensure that the layout is accurately described in the description of the cottage, including the location of the bathroom and toilet on the ground floor. We recognise that this is not the most convenient layout! We are, in fact, working our way through the lengthy process of seeking planning permission to add a new toilet on the top floor but in a very characterful and historical listed cottage within a national park, this can take up to two years or more to achieve. Thank you so much for this lovely feedback. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay in Apple Tree Cottage and hope that you will come again. We also love the tranquility. The owners gave us a lovely welcome with a gift of wine, chocolates and flowers on the kitchen table, milk in the fridge and even a phone call on our first evening to make sure we had arrived safely and had everything we needed. • "What an absolute gem !"

All mullioned windows & exposed beams, nooks & crannies, very tastefully furnished, and with literally EVERYTHING required for a peaceful & relaxing holiday. Having stayed at many properties in the South- West, we can honestly say that this is THE most delightful cottage we have had the pleasure of booking ! Ideally situated for visiting the many places of interest in Devon, but if you are so inclined, you could easily spend a week here just chilling ! The gardens have several seating areas & if in season, the apple trees will provide you with a readily available crop of beautiful fruit ! It is really secluded & quiet, literally all you can hear is birdsong. Sitting in the window seat was delightful, especially early morning/ late evening. The cottage was exceedingly clean & tidy on arrival, & credit must be paid to the housekeeper. Also, the welcome wine & chocolates were greatly appreciated, & a nice gesture. As was the call from David ( the owner ) to check that everything was to our satisfaction on the first night of our arrival. We could find NOTHING to fault ( how many places could you say this about ? ) & we would thoroughly, & without hesitation, recommended this property. Be warned though - the lane in & out of the hamlet is VERY narrow & not for the faint-hearted, but easily negotiable IF you take it cautiously & with consideration for the locals ! In summary - 10/10 from us !

Thank you so much for this really lovely and thoughtful review. We try to make sure our guests enjoy themselves and have everything they could want from a Devon cottage. The birds are wonderful, even though they steal our thatch, and over the years we've learned where the sun falls in the garden during the day and made sure that there are plenty of places to just sit and relax. We don't know what kind of variety of apples we have but they are tasty and coming in late August or September has the benefit of being able to pick them straight off the tree. We hope you'll return again and will enjoy Appletree just as much as the first time. David and Hilary Property Owner

Fantastic view from the kitchen window of the field over the road with the cattle. Owners very attentive, it is by far, the the best equipped cottage we have stayed in. Bovey Tracy is just far enough to walk down into and enjoy the lovely cafes and park. Will stay here again.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay in Appletree and thank you for posting this feedback. It's lovely to see the fields, and also how they change over the seasons. We've improved the different seating areas in the garden in the past year so that you can get the morning sun in one place and the evening sun in another. You'd be very welcome to return at any time. The owners clearly want to ensure that their guests have the best holiday possible and were only too pleased to help in any way. The house really felt like a home, and it was spotless. The garden is beautiful and the location was perfect for us - we enjoyed trips into Dartmoor, to Paignton Zoo and spent an enjoyable rainy day exploring the World of Marbles and The Jolly Roger in Bovey Tracey. BOVEY TRACEY

Newton Abbott 6.5 miles; Teigmouth 10 miles; Exeter 15 miles

Nestled in the valley of the River Bovey is this stunning little town known as "The Gateway to the Moor". Bovey Tracey got its name from the meandering river that flows through it, with 'Tracey' representing the family that were the lords of the manor after the Norman Conquest. It has a great history with heavy involvement in the English Civil War which resulted in the name of the town's pub "The Cromwell Arms" which serves real ale and good food. The history of the town can be discovered in the Heritage Centre, with the Dartmoor National Park Authority also nearby. Bovey Tracey offers a selection of shops and cafés along with the stunning Mill Marsh Park and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery which offers guided tours. The town comes just outside of the Dartmoor National Park which provides seemingly endless walking and cycling paths along with incredible scenery. The market town of Newton Abbot sits nearby, offering a fantastic day out with charming buildings and a good range of amenities. The beautiful city of Exeter is also within driving distance, and if a day at the seaside is what you're after then take a trip to Teignmouth.
