  • "Wagtail Cottage is very well maintained and amongst the cleanest places we've stayed in."

The garden is great, with a nice covered area for eating and space and toys for children to play. We don't stay in many 4 or 5 star hotels, but we do stay in a lot of self-catering cottages around the UK and we would happily stay here again. The hosts are really friendly and were there to provide a warm welcome and help out with anything we needed, whilst not feeling like they were on top of us. The cottage has everything you need - from a well provisioned, compact, kitchen to books and garden games. The only slight downsides were the shower which, although really good, is too high for children to use on their own and the description needs updating as there is no longer a communal play area (but the enclosed private garden was ample anyway).

Thank you so very much for taking the time to review Wagtail Cottage, we very much appreciate it. We have tried to provide extra toys and games for both adults and children to enjoy in the absence of the play area. It was reported on several occasions and requests made to have the play area removed from the cottage details, but unfortunately it wasn’t done. I hope it wasn’t too much of a disappointment for you, but I am glad to say it has now been removed from the cottage description. With reference to the height of the shower controls, as I explained at the time, this was a deliberate decision for health and safely reasons. We felt that for young children using a shower unattended could result in scalds. The controls are at a height comfortable for most adults. Thank you again for your very kind comments. • "We visit Cornwall on a regular basis and prefer to stay in 4 or 5 star accommodation."

This is by far the worst accommodation we have stayed in. The furnishings were tired, the bedding was washed out, and the array of plastic flowers and foliage were dust traps. The whole place would benefit from a deep clean. We found it so depressing that we cut our stay short by three days.

For anyone reading this review, please take the time to read our many previous reviews, as these will give a far more accurate, constant and honest account of our cottage and how we run it. Our soft furnishings were replaced in the lounge in June of this year, and the bedding is certainly not washed out or worn. There are no plastic flowers in the cottage, but quality silk displays from Scots of Stow and are kept free of dust. Both bedding and floral displays could have been changed or removed on request, and in ten years of welcoming guests to the cottage we have never had a cleanliness issue. The guests, were asked during their stay if we could do anything for them, and they assured us everything was fine, therefore we were not given the opportunity to address any issues. We are always available to to guests throughout their stay and are more than happy to help in any way we can. To say the cottage was so depressing they had to leave is grossly unfair, perhaps the very bad weather experienced that week had a part to play in their decision to return home. We will continue to give our guests a very warm welcome and provide a wonderful base in which to enjoy this beautiful part of Cornwall. Property Owner

  • "Our holiday in Cornwall to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary was absolutely wonderful but it was made extra special because of where we stayed."

Wagtail Cottage was totally delightful in every way. A beautiful spotlessly clean and very well equipped cottage with everything you could possibly need. The cottage is set in a truly peaceful and tranquil setting which is exactly what we needed. The views were amazing. The locality was perfect for being able to visit all the places we had on our list and we covered many! At the end of our busy and fun day we would return to this gem where we stayed and it felt like our home. This is just what you need when you go on holiday. Our family visited from Redruth and there were toys and puzzles etc. The lovely garden to sit in and the fields across the way to go and look at the horses. So thank you to lovely Sheila and Peter for your warm welcome and information on things to do and places to go. For being on hand if we had any questions. For the bottle of wine and card not to mention the delicious jar of grape jam from your very own vines! We really hope to return to Cornwall one day and revist Wagtail Cottage. I can hear it calling our names! With best wishes from Michele and Rod Jones from Whitstable Kent.

Thank you for your wonderful review, we appreciate it very much. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than to hear that guests have enjoyed their time with us. We were so pleased to be able to help make your anniversary special and we were glad you enjoyed your day. Looking forward to seeing you on your next visit. Sheila & Peter. Property Owner

  • "On arrival we were greeted by Sheila, who couldn't wait to show us comprehensively around Wagtail Cottage."

It has everything you could need and crucially, there is a freezer - perfect for ice packs to take delightful local produce on a lengthy journey hone in what is laughingly called the British Summer. Many holiday cottages don't even have an ice box which is just unnecessarily too basic. Wagtail Cottage is rural, no road traffic sounds and only nature all around. Feeding the birds is a must and bird seed is kindly supplied - top marks - and the little feathered friends hang around in the bushes, pretty much waiting for you to put more out! A small, covered outside space allows relaxing and winding down after a day of sightseeing. Ah, yes, on to the beds, often a cause for disappointment. Not here. I can confidently say the bed was the best I've had in a Sykes Cottage and we've used Sykes for many years. Sheila almost apologised for it being higher than normal off the floor. I would have happily used a stepladder to sleep on this one! The beds and comprehensive fittings are standard across all their cottages on the complex, mind you, you can't hear anyone else. The owners were on hand most of our week and even sought us out her and there, Sheila especially eager to know if we were comfortable and all was good and was quite lovely to talk with. That level of friendly customer service is often absent elsewhere - other holiday cottage owners should seriously take note. Granted, there are good 'uns out there and I've dealt with a fair few. But you feel the absence of others after accidentally stumbling upon them on arrival, then never seeing them again. If basic things are broken or missing and need replenishing, phoning up is fine, but can feel anonymous, rather like complaining in your normal life. For the money holiday cottages cost (which is currently increasing quickly), patrons deserve better. I could go on longer, so I say if this is available, just book it - you won't be disappointed.

Chairs in living room were not the most comfortable, no foot rest. No black out curtains. The bed was nice and comfortable that gave us a good night sleep. Shower was good and powerful. Nice well kept garden.

We pride ourselves on providing a huge amount of kitchen equipment at the cottage, including a juice extractor, I'm sorry that you missed it. I could even have provided an electric one if you had asked me. There are two frying pans, the larger one is stainless steel, but either could have been changed on request. The suite is a good quality leather, but of course everyone's taste is different. We don't provide recliners because of health & safety reasons, if children are staying at the cottage little fingers can get trapped. We could have provided you with footstools if required, but we have never been asked for them before. Blackout curtains again, is something we have never had a comment about. I think you will agree, I did ask you at intervals during your stay, if you had everything you needed as I would have been more than happy to provide anything you wanted. In addition, I make all my guests aware i am available at any time to deal with queries and requests. I was happy to hear you found the beds comfortable and the shower good. Property Owner

We are so sorry to hear that you didn't feel the photographs of the property were a true representation, this is not something that has been brought to our attention before. When it comes to comfort we understand that it is a very personal thing and won't be everyone's comfort preference, however, the sofa is 2 years old and many guests have praised us on how comfortable they have found the property. It’s also superbly positioned for both the North and South Cornish coasts. Peter and Sheila were excellent hosts with a genuine desire to make the guest experience the best possible. The cottage itself has everything (and more!) that you could possibly need for your stay and, should you think up something additional, I have no doubt that Sheila and Peter would do all they could to sort it for you. They were wonderful hosts, making us feel completely at home from the outset. The property

This character cottage forms part of the south wing of a beautifully converted courtyard of ancient farm buildings known as Higher Penhole Farm Cottages, believed to have once formed part of the Lanhydrock Estate.

In a very private location, the cottage is approached from the brick paved parking area, across a private extensive lawn to the inner garden.

Here you will be greeted by a wealth of flowers and shrubs with a further lawned area.

A covered patio area also awaits you with a prolific grape vine growing over it, perfect for an afternoon tea, an evening tipple or an alfresco meal at any time.

From the moment you step out of your car you will notice the peace and quiet of the Cornish countryside, interrupted only by the sounds of the wild birds that live in the surrounding trees.

From the garden gate you can enjoy views south over the surrounding farmland and down the wooded valley to the ancient deer park.

At night you will be amazed by the sight of millions of stars and planets, if you have clear skies, as light pollution is minimal.

The quality furnishings in the cottage include a leather suite in the lounge as well as a king size bed in the main bedroom, that can be split into two single beds on request.

A further double bed can be found in the second bedroom.

The contemporary tiled bathroom includes a walk-in shower and a heated towel rail, to keep your towels, warm and dry.

Please note that there is one small step into the bathroom from the hall.

Heating is provided by an oil filled electric radiator in the lounge, which is thermostat controlled, and electric, thermostat controlled, heaters in the hallway and both bedrooms.

In addition, there is also a good sized log and coal burner in the lounge which can provide very cosy nights in, even in the depth of winter.

Please note that that logs and coal will be provided for your first night at the cottage from October to March inclusive.

An exceptionally well-equipped kitchen provides a full-sized fridge freezer, an oven with ceramic hob, as well as a microwave oven, a dishwasher and a washer /drier (a washing line and pegs are to hand), and a wealth of other kitchen equipment you may need for your holiday.

In the lounge there is a large flat screen TV with a Humax Freeview box and a DVD player as well as a music centre with CD player and a selection of DVD's and CDs for your use when you want to wind down after a busy day on the beach or exploring the delights of Cornwall.

There are also TV's and DVD players in each of the bedrooms and, a selection of books and games for you to use.

Wagtail Cottage lies only nine miles from each of the ancient fishing villages of Polperro and Looe and at Looe there is also a fine beach which all the family can enjoy, whilst still having access to the shops and pubs, cafes and restaurants that are throughout the town.

You can also enjoy boat trips from the centre of the town, including fishing trips and tours of Looe Island which now comprises a famous wildlife haven.

As well as being close to Looe and Polperro and, only a few miles further on to the sailing village of Fowey, famous for its connections with Daphne du Maurier , Wagtail Cottage is only seven miles from the village of Lostwithiel, the former ancient capital of Cornwall and where the Black Knight once resided at Restormel Castle, which you can visit.

It is an interesting village with individual shops, including antique shops, and cafes and restaurants, as well as several pubs.

Sitting on the banks of the River Fowey you can enjoy beautiful walks from there along the riverside.

To the north you can visit the famous Jamaica Inn, only twelve miles away in the centre of Bodmin Moor.

Other interesting places nearby include Bodmin, famous for its steam railway and its infamous jail, both of which you can visit, and Charlestown Harbour famous for its tall ships, which has been featured in many films and TV series including the latest tv version of Poldark.

You can also visit The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Carnglaze Caverns, all within just a few miles.

There is just so much to do in this beautiful part of Cornwall which is just a short drive from the city of Plymouth in Devon.
