  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Vine Cottage, The cottage was a good space to chill out and relax - a peaceful environment."

Dunster is an excellent base for exploring Exmoor. The village has a good choice of restaurants - we recommend The Luttrell Arms for dinner and the Castle Coffee Shop for coffee and delicious home-made cakes etc. We hope to have a further stay at Vine Cottage. Thank you.

  • "A lovely homely cottage with everything you need for a few days away."

Well equipped kitchen, comfy beds, and good sized rooms for a cottage. Well located with a short walk into the village, castle and mill, and easy drives to Minehead, the beautiful National Trust village of Selworthy and beyond. Good communication with Sandra and Steve with helpful advice about parking - it is best to drive up St George's Street past the cottage, turn round at Hangars Lane and park close to the wall just above St George's Close. We had no problem at all with finding a parking space. A lovely break was had by all.

  • "This was a short carers break, the cottage was perfect with everything required, peace and quiet and private, in a beautiful area with easy street parking and many assorted walks on the doorstep in a friendly village setting, plus being away from the main traffic."

One could happily live in this cottage, so I would recommend both Vine Cottage and the area to anyone seeking a break from the daily round of life. The Harvest of the vine will remain within me. Many Thanks. Robin. Cornwall

Cottage is always clean and fresh on arrival. Anne and myself would recommend this cottage to anyone who is looking for a quiet peaceful holiday. Dunster is a lovely old historic town . Not sure if we would go again due to our age , both in our late eighties but we have happy memories of Vine Cottage.

  • "A lovely cottage, it had a Beatrix Potter feel about it from the beginning."

All facilities were good, the rooms were charmingly decorated and the gardens completed the overall cottage feel. We definitely recommend the cottage for a quiet, comfortable stay. Nice pubs in Dunster, too. The Luttrell Arms is a great restaurant / pub, with lovely gardens. A short stagger back to the cottage! The location, close to Dunster high Street and two National Trust properties - the water mill and Dunster Castle - were a short stroll away. Dunster village itself has a nice friendly feel to it and there are many historic places a short drive or bus trip away. At the time of writing, a single bus fare to Lynmouth was £2!

  • "Being 6’5” the doorways were terrible for me and as we are both in our 70’s a downstairs loo would have been very welcome."

Parking was a nightmare and far more difficult than the information highlighted. We were confused about rubbish / recycling as there was no blue bag and the ‘blue’ bag in the kitchen was black! In the end, we brought it all home with us!

Dear Howard, Thanks for your feedback. As a grade II listed cottage dating from 1833, Vine Cottage cannot be adapted to include a downstairs toilet, nor raise the doorways. We are sorry that you found parking difficult. As a mainly medieval village, Dunster wasn’t designed for parking by the front door. But in the three years we have owned Vine Cottage, we have usually been able to park within a minute’s walk of the cottage. On the rare occasions we can’t do that, we can always find parking three or four minutes away. Also, being on a quiet street near the Church, it is always possible to drop off luggage. Thank you for the comment about the recycling: we covered the blue bin with a floral pattern and are sorry this has led to confusion. We will clarify this for future guests. Property Owner

  • "Th only complaint we have is that the lovely cottage is advertised as being for 4 adults, but in fact the second bedroom not only has a smaller bed but the room itself is very small."

We were only alerted to this after we had booked, paid and were almost about to go. We managed, and enjoyed our visit but we feel this should be made clearer at the outset. Apart from that the cottage and situation in the lovely village are idyllic.

Dear Elizabeth, thanks for your kind feedback. Our details now clearly state upfront (as opposed to further down the listing) that the cottage sleeps 2 adults and 2 children or only 3 adults) Property Owner

Only dropped a mark because of the sofa wasn’t very comfortable. Enjoyed exploring the local area with walks to Minehead, Blue Anchor and Bats Castle. Dunster Castle is definitely worth a visit and the village has some lovely restaurants and shops.

Dear Lee, thanks for your feedback. The sofa cushions are feather and had flattened. We have re-padded the sofa cushions and this has made them more comfortable. Hope to see you again. Property Owner

  • "This was our second visit to Vine Cottage , last one was 2021."

The property was as before very clean and tidy and situated in a lovely area of Somerset. Parking can be a bit awkward but because we stayed towards the end of the holiday season we weren’t affected too much and managed to park without too much of a problem . I cannot really fault the cottage at all but may I make just one comment, l think the settees and armchair in the lounge are looking a bit tired and perhaps could do with a bit of a lift . A really good holiday and would highly recommend Vine Cottage to anyone Gordon Hill

However, these criticisms aside it was ultra clean, beautifully decorated and stunning location, one more thing clean towels for 2nd week would have been welcome

Dear guest, sorry that you found the sofas low for you. There is another armchair available in the living room (out of view but closer to the TV) that you might have found more suitable. We are in the process of upgrading the fridge containers and thanks for the reminder! Property Owner

  • "The property & location are great as is the village of Dunster."

However ,with no designated parking space, parking can be a nightmare!

Hi - we are glad that you enjoyed Dunster and Vine Cottage! Sorry that you found parking a challenge — being only a few minutes’ walk from Dunster’s medieval centre, there isn’t much reserved parking. Despite this, we generally find it easy to park close to Vine Cottage and we are working to improve our instructions to guests to explain how we achieve this! Property Owner

  • "Love at first sight."

This is a beautiful, cosy cottage. A great deal of love and care has gone into the furnishings and decor and it was immaculately clean and well equipped. We could not fault it. It felt like coming home at the end of each day. There is so much to see in Dunster alone, including many walks from the front door but this is also a great base to explore all that Exmoor has to offer. We had no problems parking and there was usually a space by the church or below the school. We loved the church bells- especially the carillon every four hours but we closed the bedroom window at night and had no trouble sleeping. Our host, Sandra was so kind and helpful when I locked the keys inside the cottage. We will definitely be back.

  • "We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay ."

Very picturesque cottage in the heart of Dunster. Despite having no allocated parking we had no problems parking at any time - just a few steps away from the cottage. The cottage was very clean and comfortable for 3 of us and the kitchen had everything in it we needed. The cottage is quite old fashioned which is fine and quite charming but is looking tired - needs redecorating throughout. The bathroom could also do with updating (inc. replacing carpet with hard floor in bathroom). Dunster is very pretty. Definitely recommend going on the steam railway too.

  • "The best, cosy cottage imaginable."

The atmosphere was warm and inviting and every room had something interesting in it. We both remarked on the pictures by artist H.Rimmer and were excited to research him online to find out who he was - a Dunster resident. All the facilities of a modern home were provided, all with a 1950's twist with the floral decor throughout. We felt very well catered for and once we'd worked out the remote thermostat were snug and warm all day. With a nod to Little Owl Cleaning everything was spick and span. The instructions for looking after the cottage were clear as was the information on the wood burner - even though we didn't get round to lighting it. Thank you so much for an idyllic holiday !

About the location

DUNSTER

Minehead 3 miles.

Dunster is a popular tourist village near the North Somerset coast and is a largely unspoiled spot: the centre of the town retains many old buildings which hug the winding cobbled streets. The whole village is dominated by the castle on its hill but the focal point of the High Street is the picturesque Yarn Market, a covered area built in 1609 particularly to accommodate the wool traders and other cloth merchants. Inside Dunster castle there are fine plasterwork ceilings and the extensive terraced and landscaped gardens contain many rare shrubs and trees, and offer marvelous views out to sea, and towards the Quantocks. For those who enjoy exploring the countryside, Dunster is within the Exmoor National Park and there are plenty of footpaths leading onto the surrounding hills of Grabbist and walks into Dunster’s Deer Park at the foot of the castle. Dunster is well served with traditional inns, individual shops and interesting places to explore including the working 18th century watermill. West Somerset’s premier resort of Minehead is less than three miles away and has golden sandy beaches, seaside attractions for the visitor, and plenty of cafes, shops and bistros.

There is a Good Housekeeping Bond of £50 for this property.
