  • "Another fabulous stay at Swallows Loft."

We love this property - extremely clean and well maintained with a lovely garden which is safe for the dogs too! A short drive to the beach at Bigbury and a few miles to the nearby town of Kingsbury which has supermarkets and shops! The only reason we didn’t give 5 stars this visit was purely due to the work going on behind the property at Orchard Cottage - with the workmen elevated, if you had the back patio curtains open, they could see straight in which was a shame to keep these closed in the week. But otherwise, a perfect stay again - thank you Swallows Loft!

Love the area with plenty of walks. Pub and village store easily walkable. Very quiet with plenty of bird life on your doorstep. House very well equiped and parking so useful to have.

  • "The property was perfect, great location and all what you need for a comfortable stay."

Location is quiet and great for surrounding areas. The mezzanine bedroom was fun for the kids too. We arrived late in the rain to a warm and cozy atmosphere. We would recommend this place and will certainly be booking again.

  • "Swallows Loft is a great cottage in a handy location for exploring the South Hams."

It was easy to find and a nice generous parking space made arrival easy. The garden is perfect for dogs; contained and safe. Our children loved exploring the cottage’s quirks and especially the loft bedroom which was great fun for the week - as others have noted it is snug up there and the stairs are not for the feint hearted but this only added to the experience. It is super cosy - we turned the heating off completely (in October) as it was quite warm enough without it. Two loos in a cottage that size is a plus and the downstairs bathroom was lovely. A couple of suggestions for visitors would be arrive with some staples as there isn’t a welcome pack and bring some more towels (or wash them mid stay, as we did).

  • "We loved Swallows Loft, and had a great week with the added benefit of wonderful weather!"

The property is a delight, beautifully decorated and furnished, equipped with absolutely everything we needed during the week. It was a bit of a downer to have not even a pint of milk to make a drink on arrival? The concreted coffee in the storage jar did not help! The provision of towels was minimal for a week. Just felt these things didn’t create a caring feeling from the owners?

Our landlord was lovely and helpful. Highly recommended . The loft bedroon was as described I loved it but not suitable for anyone over 5' ! Possible best suited to young fok I am an active 75 year old and it was a bit taxing All in all a wonderful stay.

  • "A peaceful haven of nature, wildlife and peace tucked down country lanes!"

We loved our stay at Swallows Loft and are already planning the next visit! The surrounding area is beautiful. A 5 minute drive to the lovely beach down single track country lanes. A shop and a pub in walking distance. The home itself is beautiful- on 3 levels, ground floor with a big double bedroom, dressing room and bathroom. First floor with a lovely open plan kitchen with everything you could ask for and a sofa area with a small paved patio. Upstairs is a cosy 2 single bed sleeping area with Velux windows. The little garden area is a haven for birds and a sun trap too! 2 little blackbirds will visit you on the window sill for their daily feed of currants! Table and chairs with cushions and an umbrella are available. There is also a clothes line for drying the wetsuits! We cooked in the kitchen and ate out too whilst visiting the nearby villages of Modbury, Bigbury and Salcombe. A little gem. Thank you Bruce for letting us stay in your gorgeous Swallows Loft…

Thankyou for choosing my home as your holiday destination I’m so pleased that you enjoyed staying at Swallows Loft and the weather was nice for you. Property Owner

  • "The Swallows loft was a great place to stay as a base for exploring beaches and Dartmoor."

The loft space was ideal and a real novelty for our two teenagers. Even though they are Used to their own double beds at home it was enjoyed by both. I think it would suit a young adult or two if they were up for it - made them feel like they had their own space whilst giving us adults privacy and room on the ground floor. I crawled up there to tidy before leaving and it was more roomy than I expected from other reviews - so much storage space to unpack. TVs in every bedroom too a very well thought out and designed space. We enjoyed being there and looked forward to returning from days out. We enjoyed coming home and stretching out on the sofas to watch tv and play games at the breakfast bar. When we cooked it was easy with everything needed. The walk-in wardrobes were great too if you wanted to stay longer there is ample room to unpack. The only downside was that with the heating on when we got there we had to turn it off permanently as it made sleeping uncomfortable especially in the loft space. (We are outdoorsy types so find central heating too stuffy generally so if you like being warm this is a plus) but meant we did struggle to get or keep our coats, shoes, towels, wetsuits dry in Oct - but there was plenty of airers for outside in summer. Plenty of windows and balcony French windows to let air in! The bottom of the stairs by front door became a tight derobe/coat and towel dry dog spot as weather was autumnal as expected for Britain.

15 mins drive to the beach, supermarket delivers but you don't need that as the store in the village is cavernous and has everything you need. two showers, one bath ensures everyone has the room to bathe after a day at the beach. It is so quiet, and the garden wildlife is Amazing - pheasants, foxes, a couple of Ospreys circling above, swallows, crows - the list goes on!

  • "As regular visitors to friends in Bigbury on Sea we were aware of the sort of place it would be and were not disappointed."

In fact it was better than we expected and we were impressed by everything included, some of which are not mentioned in the details. Although stated, the loft bedroom was very small and with such a low ceiling it was extremely hot for sleeping. Maybe better suited to a couple of children as opposed to adults. Suggestions to make it even better, we would suggest new outside patio sets, these are very old plus change the shower curtain in the downstairs en-suite. We also ran out of loo roll very quickly and would have expected replacements available in the property. Loved our stay and would definitely book again if required.

  • "A great week spent at the cottage, lovely cottage , very clean and well maintained and very well stocked."

Only comment would be the setee uncomfortable, would be nice to have some cushions or support. For anyone staying and wanting to eat out, do book tables and don’t wait until last minute as we found most places were fully booked even in early June. Take cash to Bigbury on Sea to park as wifi terrible and really hard to pay online down there.

  • "This was a great place to stay."

Very quiet although in a small development of a country house divided into about 4 separate homes. Country views, comfortable and cozy, and very good for our dog as well. Really near, by car, to a great restaurant called the oyster shack; not posh not cheap but fantastic seafood. We had a minor problem with the hot water on the first morning but once we worked out how long the boiler took to reheat the water (about half an hour) there were no problems at all. I hope to revisit soon.

Top quality utensils/cutlery/etc The only negative would be the lack of headroom in the upstairs bedroom, very restricted and quite difficult to either make the bed or use the bedside drawers, otherwise just perfect.

Thank you for your feedback. We do make all our guests aware via the property description that the ceiling in the second bedroom does slope and there is restricted head room in that bedroom. Property Owner

Although the cottage was smaller than expected it is well equipped and well designed . The loft bedroom was very small however and this caused a problem for a taller member of the party . However what a beautiful piece of heaven it is . The garden is well Maintained and very lush will flowers, birds, butterflies and insects with the occasional visiting pheasant !! The cottage is well equipped and was clean and tidy tucked away and very peaceful. Bigbury on sea was a short drive away and was a joy to behold at all times of the day . Be sure to check tide times as it changes week to week . Lots to Do in South Devon shopping, steam railways days out for children in adventure parks ,ambling, swimming such a great place to visit .

From the accommodation perspective we were very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The local pub however was far to expensive but the Chinese takeaway from Modbury was excellent. It was hard to find places to walk the dog and driving in places was rather precarious.

We had such a lovely time and so did our two dogs. The cottage was extremely clean and had everything we needed and more. The beds were comfy, the bathrooms were clean and spacious and having a private harden for the dogs made the stay much easier and safer for them. We would definately book again in the future. The location is perfect to access the surrounding beaches in just a short drive.

  • "Lovely cottage in very peaceful surroundings."

The only thing that spoilt the holiday - nothing to do with you - is the extortionate prices of drinks in the local pub (Pickwick Inn) and also the Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island. I know this has probably all been put down to 'COVID' as their excuse and places like these want to recoup some of their lost income but all it is going to do is keep the tourists away from the West Country. This is not just OUR opinion but we spoke to many people during our holiday and the concensus of opinion was exactly the same! These pub owners should realise that GREED will never pay and people will just walk away! Sorry about all of that - I've finished now - but just to reiterate Swallows Loft was absolutely lovely and we would definately recommend it to our friends.

Immaculately clean and kitted out to a high specification. It is in a lovely area close to great beaches and walks and we had a great week blessed with unbroken sunshine. The front garden is a great sun trap and there is a small seating area off the lounge which got the morning sun. Recommend Bolberry Down,Bigbury and Bantham beaches ( expensive parking) Sadly we won’t be returning as the steps to the house and garden were too much for our aged collie dog. There were public footpaths close to the cottage for short dog walks but unfortunately access to some of these were not dog friendly for our old girl as she couldn’t get under or over the stiles. Also the narrow rutted lane turning left out of the cottage was not fit the faint hearted or those with low slung cars. In conclusion a perfect getaway if you are fit and agile.....to be fair the steps are mentioned in the description but I hadn’t fully appreciated the difficulty for the dog.
