Fantastic property exactly as described Road in and out was quite tight which could’ve been mentioned in the listing as this may be a consideration for some - we were fine with it though
-
"Beautiful property, great location, well equipped kitchen with helpful supply of herbs and spices and cleaning supplies."
Great selection of books and games, kids all loved the pool table, although not flat and true!! Overall a really lovely stay, thank you, would definitely recommend
-
"A unique country home with an unusually rare large garden which is very secure for canine friends."
School house is very spacious, and with the large game room even on a rainy day, there is ample room for all the family members. A very peaceful, secluded and relaxing place to spend a holiday
-
"(June 24) We had an amazing 2 weeks at the school house, loved the property and facilities there especially the games room for evening table tennis and garden for barbecues- we had some lovely sunny evenings!"
The area is remote but just what we wanted, peaceful and away from it all and it’s a 10 minute drive into Ivybridge (down a country lane). Great place and hope to repeat next year (if not before).
-
"Our 3rd stay (in a row) as we absolutely love the house and the location, it's so peaceful and relaxing and right on the moor."
Always very clean and a real home from home.
-
"School House is lovely, full of character and much larger than expected."
Tastefully decorated throughout. Very clean and well maintained. Very well equipped kitchen. Very comfortable beds. Huge games room which is wonderful for children, they would never get bored. Beautiful location, just inside Dartmoor National Park with access to the moor virtually on doorstep but only couple of miles from Ivybridge which has everything. So peaceful too, only sounds are the babbling streams and birdsong. Highly recommend this place, one of the nicest we’ve stayed in.

"Lovely house in a beautiful area."
Gail was very sweet and left a bottle of wine and some fresh milk for us in the fridge. The house is equipped with everything you need. We found the kitchen very well stocked and loved the attention to detail. We were there in very cold weather, but the rooms were stocked with wood for the fire, blankets, and hot water bottles. The game room was great for days spent indoors, playing pool, Scrabble, air hockey, ping pong, or any of the other dozens of board games. The library has loads of books to choose from, too. In the evenings, the sitting room was so comfortable once we lit the fire. The garden was the best thing for our cocker spaniel and even though it's not fully fenced, it's big enough that Ruby never tried to get out. She had plenty of running space there. Plus, it was peppered with snowdrops, which was just beautiful. Really recommend this, and we will probably book it again, but do bear in mind that in winter, the house is quite cold. Plus, there's no phone signal in the house or the immediate area (though we didn't miss it, and the WiFi worked great), and the nearest shops are in Ivybridge, a 10-minute drive away.

"A stunning cottage that was lovely and warm in mid November!"
The snug that is mentioned on the website, but is not in the pictures, is very cosy, and the shower is epic! Turn left out of the gate and the moors are just up the (quite steep) road. Our Border Collie had the week of her life, which is the best recommendation I can give!

Lovely warm, cosy and spotlessly clean Nice to arrive to milk and flowers spacious, well equipped and nice place to stay
-
"We particularly enjoyed the relaxing environment, the wonderful garden and the spacious accommodation."
The interesting range of books in the library and the historical details showing it was once a small village school. It was very clean and well equipped.. the surroundings are beautiful and it is great for dog walking. There is some confusion about the signage for road closure and this might need clarification as it confused us and we took longer to arrive than we anticipated.
-
"Lovely house, very well equipped, very comfortable."
Kitchen needs an extractor...fire alarm went off with cooking sausages! Another saucepan would be useful. Also useful to state which day to put out bins for refuse collection.
-
"The house was great!"
It catered for all our needs with a young family - a big, interesting garden to explore, games, indoor space, books, well equipped kitchen. Thank you for letting us stay! Recommended to our friends and family already!
-
"We loved our stay at this gorgeous property."
The weather has been perfect for enjoying the beautiful garden. We particularly loved the diversity and arrangement of the plants. We might borrow some ideas for our own garden. Thank you so much for this wonderful stay, we wouldn't have had a better time. Rachel

"Lovely, spacious and very clean accommodation."
Garden is huge and although not secure for dogs the house is in a very quiet area so not a problem for us. It had some some stunning plants but was a little wild and little overgrown in places. It was absolutely ideal for my husband and I and 2 small dogs. Would easily accommodate 4 adults. Thank you for a fantastic stay - would definitely recommend to friends.
-
"A delightful house, thoughtfully updated and well equipped."
The large garden was much used and appreciated, so colourful at this time of year (mid May). The quiet location is just perfect, surrounded by pasture and woods with the open moor a short walk up the lane. Would thoroughly recommend.
-
"We absolutely love The School House, perfect for us and the dogs, 30 minutes away from 3 beautiful beaches and right on the doorstep of Dartmoor."
Everything has been thought of with this property and the owners are very helpful indeed. We have been here 2 years on the trot and have already booked for next year. Amazing, thank you.
-
"This beautiful cottage surpasses all its photos, we had everything and more than expected, the garden was sheer pleasure and perfect for the dog, the games room was fab as the weather was rather iffy!"
One of the most comfortable cottages we have ever stayed in. Location perfect for the moors and all we could hear in the garden were the birds singing. will be back hopefully next year as still have plenty to see and do locally. lovely extra little touches too.
-
"The Schoolhouse is a beautiful Victorian house in a quiet location on the edge of Dartmoor."
Perfect for our family holiday - children especially loved the old school room with so much space to play. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, lovely dining space in the hall, such a comfy and cosy sitting room. We absolutely loved staying at the School House and were very sorry to leave!
-
"Lovely cottage up close to amazing walking country."
Very impressed.
-
"We found it very well equipped."
We much appreciated the welcome wine biscuits and tea when we arrived and the friendly welcome from the two ladies as we arrived a little early after a long journey. We had an excellent meal at the First and Last bistro which is only a short car journey away.We think this could be mentioned in the general information.
-
"We had a fantastic week at School House - it’s even more spacious and welcoming than the photos suggest."
Our children loved the huge garden with lots of different areas to explore and we enjoyed wandering up the short (safe) road to Dartmoor to see the ponies. The house was so clean and had everything we needed and was a great base for lots of places we wanted to visit. We would definitely stay again! Thank you
-
"We had a great week at the Old School House."
It catered for all our needs and was an ideal base for exploring the local countryside and beaches.
-
"We had a wonderful stay at School House."
The house itself is lovely and very well equipped, and the garden is stunning. Harford was very peaceful and tranquil, but not too far to drive to places that we wanted to visit. We also really appreciated the Saturday changeover day, as travelling on a Saturday is so much better! Thank you for an amazing holiday, we would love to return one day!
-
"Absolutely amazing property; this is our favourite so far and will definitely return."
Everything has been well thought out and every utensil possible is there. The games room is great especially for rainy days and the real bonus is the garden for the dogs. We felt right at home the moment we arrived. A fantastic location for the moors and also 3 beautiful dog friendly beaches- Mothercombe, Whitsand Bay and Bigbury on Sea. We can’t wait to return - Very highly recommended.
-
"Beautifully decorated and comfortable house with a lot of character."
The kitchen was superbly equipped for cooking. We and our dogs especially loved the beautiful garden. The dogs had space to roar around and chase balls and we loved relaxing amongst the spring flowers and looking across the valley and at the pretty church next door. The owners went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. We used the house as a base for walking a week of the 2 Moors Way as Dartmoor is a 20 minute walk up the lane. Highly recommend this, we hope to return.

"We loved the School House and really enjoyed our stay."
We'd love to come back again - which we rarely say about holiday cottages. The main part of the house was comfortable and very well presented and easy to keep clean with a dog that loved being in the wonderful garden! The bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen suited us very well. We also really enjoyed the games room, especially our 14-year old son learning the art of pool, which held his interest longer than the air hockey - although that was fun as well! The School House is an all-round super place to stay. Our only disappointment didn't relate to the property but instead the restrictions on dogs on Dartmoor (a short lead at all times). All very reasonable but we were perhaps a little naive about the springtime presence of ground-nesting birds. So just a word of warning to other owners of energetic dogs!
-
"Really lovely house, very comfortable, clean and well equipped Although in a rural situation it doesn't take long to get to Ivybridge and the main roads."
There are some lovely walks on the doorstep with the moors just up the hill and river walks nearby .
-
"This is our third stay at The School House - and it never disappoints."
It is a lovely place to gather our small family and friends when we visit from North Wales, drink wine and remember happy times. The property is immaculate and well cared for. It is a special place
-
"School House is fabulous."
Spotlessly clean, well equipped and really comfortable. The garden is beautiful and surrounding area stunning. The owners couldn't be more helpful and its such a delight to stay somewhere with such history and a strong connection to the owners family. Highly recommended and we would return in a flash! Thank you so much Gail and Adrienne.
-
"Don't bother to take a book with you; this cottage has by far and away the best "library" I have ever come across in holiday accommodation."
The games room can get rather damp in wet weather. There is a dehumidifier which helps a lot if you leave it running most of the time.
-
"The bathroom was rather small, which somewhat spoilt an otherwise very good house."
As has been said in other reviews, the road to the house from Ivybridge was very narrow in places and required some careful driving. The large garden was great, but could have been better tended as could the courtyard area adjacent to the kitchen door
-
"Great location, Great House, everything you need for nice holiday."
-
"A beautiful cottage in a beautiful location."
Just what we needed to recharge the batteries.
-
"A very well presented fully equipped house, situated in an beautiful rural location but ideal for visiting towns, countryside, houses and gardens."
Dartmouth, Torquay, Paignton and Plymouth are all popular seaside towns but countryside lovers the choices are also endless. The School House owners were very helpful, available nearby if needed. We can highly recommended this property.

-
"This house was spacious, peaceful and fitted out to a high standard."
I heartily recommend this property unless you don’t enjoy driving down single track lanes!
-
"Most relaxing stay."
-
"Everything was all very clean and tidy and as described."
The only disappointment was that the piano was in too poor condition to be played.
-
"This is a lovely and spacious Victorian former village schoolhouse."
The house was impeccably clean, well equipped with everything we needed for a family of 4 (there would have been loads of room for more). Thoughtful welcoming touches- flowers and biscuits... The children loved the huge garden and playroom. Dartmoor is on the doorstep for lovely walks and it's not a long drive to the fantastic beaches of the South Hams. Highly recommended.

"We absolutely loved the School House in Ivybridge, set in a beautiful location with stunning countryside views ."
The house boasts great family space & facilities, inc. washer dryer, dishwasher, iron & ironing board , & even a barbeque for guests use (we’d brought our barbeque with us not expecting one to be there.) The owner/s really had thought of everything that guests could possibly need whilst on holiday, a real home from home. The standard of cleanliness for a rented accomodation was A++. Comfortable beds. The property also boasts a very beautiful large garden which is also great for children & dogs -if the weather is good. Log burners for those chilly evenings. Can’t really say enough good things about this property! Our party hugely enjoyed this fantastic holiday accomodation.

"Beautiful cottage."
Absolutely excellent. Stunning. One proud owner there. We'll be back .

"We had a lovely stay at the School House."
It was just what we were hoping for with it being secluded and being surrounded by beautiful countryside. The cottage was so well equipped and a real home from home. Everything we needed and more. Even down to dog bowls and treats for our fur baby. The cottage was spotless and we felt reassured considering the current pandemic. We would definitely consider returning to the School House in the future.

About the location
IVYBRIDGE
Plymouth 12 miles.
Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to South Dartmoor’, Ivybridge is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Devon and provides the perfect base from which to explore the county’s glorious coast and countryside. The town’s namesake, the Ivy Bridge, is a 13th century construction originally designed for packhorses and widened during the age of coach travel. Nowadays, it is a popular landmark on the town’s Heritage Trail, which also takes in other noteworthy historical buildings, such as a paper mill which remains Ivybridge’s major industrial employer. Some of the most architecturally pleasing sights in the town are the aqueduct, now a listed site, and the much photographed remains of a viaduct built by Brunel. This riverside town offers a great local shopping experience, with a variety of independent shops in the compact town centre making browsing a pleasure. When it’s time for a break, take your pick from the many cafés, tearooms and bakeries in the covered arcade serving delicious food and treats to help you recharge your batteries! Just on the brink of Dartmoor National Park, Ivybridge is ideally located to explore the 368 square miles of rolling hills, rugged granite outcrops and fresh, clean air. With over 450 miles of public rights of way, you’ll find enough walks to keep you busy for a year, let alone a week! If you’d like to mix it up a bit, cycling, horse-riding, climbing and kayaking opportunities abound. Nearby Wembury is the starting point for the Two Moors Way, a 201 mile coast to coast walking route which passes through Ivybridge and continues on through high moorland and deep wooded valleys, taking in some of Devon’s most unspoilt rural scenery. At 17 miles long, the Erme-Plym Trail is slightly shorter and leads in the opposite direction through some pleasant countryside, passing the pretty Hooe Lake en route. The area surrounding Ivybridge offers a fabulous variety of attractions and days out, from the stunning beaches of the South Devon coast, to the bustling city of Plymouth.
Note: WiFi is available at the property but there is no mobile phone signal
Note: Due to the recent and sustained inclement Dartmoor weather, there are signs of moisture/staining on some interior walls. This is kept on top of each week by the owners and there is no mould present. A dehumidifier is available for you to use if you choose and the situation will improve as we move forward into Spring and drier weather.
