Great communication from the owner. Property has everything you could need, very comfortable and is in a picturesque location. Sitting on the patio in the sunshine with a glass of wine was perfect! Would definitely recommend.

Parking right by the property, quite rare in South Hams. A few doors away from The Pickwick Inn, open all day for drinks and pub food at lunchtime and eve. 100 yards to the local stores/delicatessen. 2 miles to Bigbury Golf Club. 3 miles to Bigbury on Sea. Great location. Cosy modern cottage.

  • "We were really disappointed with this property , in the 25 years we have been renting ,this is the worst."

Our first impression of the property was of weeds growing on the patio , no attention or care to the outside . paint peeling near the key safe , ancient patio furniture if you even wanted to sit out next to a pub car park , empty plant pots.No care has been given to the upkeep of this property, inside or out The tiny shower overflowed even with the shortest of showers.Totally misrepresented on your website .This needs sorting. Will not recommend SYKES.

This review has made us very sad and we cannot apologise enough that Mrs. B. feels the property did not meet the required standards. Our reviews to date have been glowing, which is self-evident on this site. I had not been able to attend during May due to illness unfortunately but we were aware that the recent wet weather has indeed caused weeds to grow everywhere very quickly so had planned to arrange for general maintenance w/c 24th June. This is only possible, I am sure you will appreciate, when guests are not staying and we were, up until then, booked up week on week. I have also arranged for some painting repairs to be carried out around the key safe, week commencing July 12th. In our defence, if we may, we have tried to create a mix of old with new and the patio set is a very expensive wrought-iron style, untainted in any way, which to date everyone has been happy with. An umbrella has been put in place due to the arrival of warmer weather. The cottage has a private drainage system thus it is the nature of the shower to release water slowly: I took with me a notice to inform guests of this. If I may please mention, last year every item placed in the cottage was brand new, all contents being of the highest standard, and the cottage was painted both inside and out. It is a shame the paint has been damaged around the key safe. We are disappointed however that Mrs. B. did not balance their review with compliments of the interior, which is beautifully decorated and adorned with the highest quality furniture and accessories. We do offer three points of contact for our guests, to avoid disappointment or concern: our own personal mobiles x 2, our housekeeper’s mobile and Sykes. If at any point any issue needs addressing we always attend immediately to rectify. It is a shame they did not choose to contact us and we would have sent our gardener/handyman around to the property straight away. We will be happy to issue some level of reimbursement to Mrs. B. to alleviate their disappointment, should they make contact. This is the first review we have ever received of this kind, and we too are sad our guests feel this way about our much-loved cottage. We believe it looks perfect both inside and out, with these small points amended, and you have our word on this. Property Owner

Vert well equipped and had everything we needed. The village shop is only a couple of minutes walk away, as is the pub. We enjoyed walks from the cottage with our dog including getting to the coast path, plus short drive to Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Hope Cove. Lots to do in the area.

  • "Overall a lovely week away and comfortable cottage."

Some areas need a bit of tlc - painting or cleaning (blinds, velux window, various cobwebs). Rear patio - quite a few weeds, we poured some boiling water on them. Patio furniture needs a good cleaning, however weather was wet so had little opportunity to sit out. Oven only had 1 shelf so made cooking quite difficult. Baking trays need replacing as non-stick was coming off them. Yummy cake and useful to have pint of milk thank you

  • "Absolutely wonderful cottage."

Clean, modern. Loved the cake and Prosecco-plus a local paper - which was a lovely touch, and made us feelvery welcome. The cottage was in a little hamlet with a well stocked shop - although the pub I wouldn’t recommend. However we were so cosy in the evenings, we hardly moved! Loved the beach at Bigbury on Sea. Absolutely 5 star.

  • "We had a lovely stay at Oyster cottage, despite the utterly dreadful weather."

We were a little surprised when we first arrived because we had the idea that the cottage was an old property when it is, in fact, a fairly new build. There was still plenty of character, though, and we were lovely and warm at all times (the heavy rain meant that we were indoors for much of the week) with a generous starter pack provided for the log burner in case we were chilly during the few hours that the heating wasn’t on. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen had all the bits and bobs required for cooking away from home. We did have a problem with the shower not really working but Lynne, the owner, arranged a plumber to come out first thing the following morning and, as he had to go away and order a new part, she kept in touch and let us know what was happening and when the plumber would return to fix it. Once it was fixed it was a fabulous power shower! We’d like to give 5 stars to the plumber, too! The only complaint I have is absolutely nothing to do with the property - it is about the roads. Some of them are no more than 6 ft wide, with high hedges either side and multiple potholes. I presume, however, that this is a problem that neither Lynne nor Sykes can resolve!!! I would recommend Oyster Cottage to anyone wanting to stay in this part of Devon. Karen & Clive

  • "We were a little disappointed that during a week of sea mists and constant rain ..."

We were a little disappointed that during a week of sea mists and constant rain we could only enjoy the central heating first thing in the morning and in the evening Because we had to spend longer periods in the cottage we had to buy several bags of logs to keep warm during the day In our 80s we like to be warm The cake awaiting us was very much appreciated it was delicious The beds rooms were very comfortable and warm The oven was quite dirty and no oven glove was provided to remove hot dishes We found the seating in the living room comfortable and our dog enjoyed sitting in front of the fire Despite the constant rain we enjoyed our stay visiting new places Pippi enjoyed her daily walk on the beach whatever the weather threw at us

Hi. We are so sorry you felt cold during the day at the cottage. Normally, I send a text to guests asking if we can do anything, sadly on this occasion I was away myself! We do provide a telephone number for anyone to call us with any concern. I will contact you direct and we will gladly reimburse the cost of the logs. I know that often the housekeeper places the oven gloves in a bottom drawer, I am sorry it was not apparent. We will ensure that the oven is deep cleaned this week. Thank you so much for your feedback and we are glad that on the whole the cottage was pleasing to you. If you come again, please contact me beforehand and I will place the heating on full time for you and make sure all is fully prepared prior to your arrival. • "The cottage was in a perfect location for exploring South Devon."

It was relatively clean but a few things could be improved. The windows frames need cleaning, the main bedroom was particularly bad. The blinds, especially the kitchen need a good wipe. Skirting in the bathroom needs a proper clean, there were hairs that didn't belong to us. The double bed, although not uncomfortable, was creaky. Beds in the second room were not comfortable. The sofa looked nice but was not very comfy. Despite all of of this, we had a lovely week and on improvement, I would still revisit Oyster Cottage.

Dear Mrs. ......... I was so sorry to read your grievances about the cottage. We have since placed an order for two new single beds, the double bed is brand new and we were surprised it creaky! It may be the wooden frame settling. We have now instructed our house keeper to clean all windows, frames, blinds and skirtings thoroughly. This will be revisited regularly and be pristine when you come again, to be sure. PS I did leave a voicemail for you on arrival, as I always do, out of courtesy, to see if your needs were suitably met. Next time, please do contact me and I will ensure anything you need will be available at Holywell Stores with no cost to yourselves. 07856 276581 Property Owner

Everything we needed was provided. Small things that could be improved: Bedroom drawers were dirty so didn't use to put clothes in; maybe provide a few dishwasher tablets ( we had to buy some from the local shop); We had assumed we were nearer to the beach but that wasn't an issue. Thank you Oyster Cottage!

Hi Simon, Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I am so sorry the dishwasher tablets were overlooked. I now double -check myself that nothing has been overlooked when guests are due to arrive and also - we have replaced the existing dressing table with a more substantial chest of drawers and have lined the drawers so that they remain clean. • "This is a particularly delightful South Devon cottage furnished to a very high standard."

The location is very convenient as it is approx 2 miles from Bigbury on Sea in one direction and 2 miles from the A379 in the other direction and is close to many lovely beaches. The parking is very safe.it is around 1 miles from the Journeys End gastro pub and 1.5 miles from the Oyster Shack gastro cafe near the Avon Estuary both of which are walkable with care and torches down the country lanes. There is most convenient shop just across the lane for basic supplies inc milk, there is a pleasant Co-op store in small town of Modbury (around 5 miles from the cottage) and for larger food needs the Tesco in nearby Kingsbridge is a good place to stop en route to the cottage. The cottage is only around a 35 minute drive to Saltram House (National Trust) near Plymouth which we particularly loved and is good rainy day location. Our highlights were Beesands near Start Bay, Bigbury on Sea and Kingsbridge. You can tell the owners of this cottage really care about giving visitors a wonderful stay in their cottage.

The property

Oyster Cottage is a delightful, two-bedroom, white-washed property situated in the quaint village of St Ann's Chapel.

A stone’s throw away from village stores and The Pickwick Inn pub, and a short distance from the coastline, Oyster Cottage offers a homely base for a family break within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The designated parking space is located just outside the private, dog-and child-friendly walled garden.

As you step inside the front door, you will be greeted by a handy utility/cloakroom and drying room, as well as a wall-mounted map of the County in the hallway.

Be welcomed by a stylish, open-plan living space, complete with an elegant, fully-equipped kitchen, dining table for four, and a plush, teal sofa that faces a tasteful woodburning stove – an idyllic place to gather to watch a film on the Netflix-enabled TV or play a board game.

On brighter days, dine alfresco in the evening whilst watching the sunset in the west-facing garden, where you can light the barbecue and savour your food and drink around the large patio table.

When you’re ready, return indoors to relax in a charming double with accompanying en-suite shower room or a lovely twin, with adjoining family bathroom.

When you're ready to explore, start with a scenic walk right from your front door, or even take the kids to the nearby playground to provide them with a fun start to the day.

Make the short trip to the iconic Bigbury Bay, with a walk across at low tide to Burgh Island a must during your visit, whilst you can also spend time at the remote location of Ayrmer Cove.

Slightly further afield is Bantham Bay with its infamous Gastrobus, or head to South Milton with its seafood cafe.

On your return to your lodgings, grab essentials from the impressively-equipped village store, which is brimming with local produce, or dine out at one of the many surrounding eateries, including The 12C Journeys End Inn or The Oyster Shack.

Bigbury Golf Club is also nearby, offering breath-taking sea views, or visit Dartmoor National Park, which is easily reached by car.

Plymouth marina lies a little further away and is truly a sight to behold Here you can also find two stunning National Trust properties: Saltram and Buckland Abbey.

A trip to Kingsbridge for a tour of the Cookworthy Museum is recommended, or you can even take a ferry across the estuary to Dartmouth Harbour.

Round off your break by touring the beautiful Salcombe estuary, with its lovely North Sands Beach, the National Trust grounds of Overbeck's Garden, or embark on a hike up to the East Soar vantage point, before returning home to enjoy another stunning sunset back at the wonderful Oyster Cottage.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.

About the location

BIGBURY-ON-SEA

Modbury 6 miles; Plymouth 12 miles.

Bigbury-on-Sea is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you’ve got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury-on-Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there’s plenty of entertainment for budding marine biologists. There’s also a wide and varied selection of watersports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. Windsurfing and kite-surfing are popular here, with hire facilities located right on the beach. To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury-on-Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. You can even take the dog onto the beach, although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer. Bigbury’s most famous landmark is Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However, when the tide is in you can still reach the island by hitching a ride on the popular and unique ‘sea tractor’. Burgh Island boasts an award-winning hotel, elegant and rather genteel, it’s an ideal romantic retreat for couples. Explore the South Devon coast with its fabulous sandy beaches and its breathtakingly beautiful coastal path or simply take time to visit some of the charming estuary towns and villages dotted throughout the area, such as Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. The city of Plymouth and the wild open spaces of Dartmoor are also both close at hand.
