  • "Had a lovely stay at Penlaurel."

Very comfy and plenty of space to relax, cook, or enjoy the lounges in. Also a nice welcome of bubbly & chocs. The garden was large but due to some wet weather I found some flagstones very slippery underfoot. I kept my dog on his stretchy lead as parts of the garden seemed less secure for my dog and animals were entering overnight and toileting. However the garden is so big, my dog still had plenty of space to play in. The hot tub was large and welcome after a day of walking and exploring Cornwall. The hot tub is set back in amongst trees and shrubs, which was nice and private. But as the light fades in autumn we found there was not enough garden light to clearly see the entrance to the hot tub and tripped against steps partially hidden by an overgrown bush on the first night. Defo grab a torch from the property or use the one on your phone if going into the hot tub during the evenings. A garden broom would be useful so visitors can sweep away fern leaves etc away from the hot tub as we tracked some back into the house. On the last morning I found the neighbours gardener in our garden using an electric saw at height chopping down tree branches, with our side gate open. Thankfully my dog was on his lead, or he would’ve run straight out of the gate. The bloke didn’t seem remotely concerned with his behaviour and I had to quite firmly tell him to leave and shut the gate. He hadn’t even knocked at the property to ask if it was ok to come into the garden. I was fuming. I would recommend a lock for the gate to prevent another near miss. Overall we had a fantastic time, in this beautiful property. It is well located for visits to Tintagel, Bude, Padstow, Bodwin moors to name a few. I would recommend.

Thank you for your feedback which is greatly appreciated - Penlaurel is a fabulous property and so we are so glad that you enjoyed its location and the lovely comfy lounges, local facilities and surrounding areas. The flagstones do get slippery from time to time especially after prolonged rainfall and so after checking we have had a good Jet wash all round to make this a bit better. A garden broom has now been added to the property - the trees around the hot tub are a constant headache but they do create a lovely secluded spot and so its bitter sweet. I had a word with the gardener who is very apologetic as he was under the impression that there were no guests in that week but should have checked. Property Owner

  • "The actual house itself is lovely apart from the cellar door underneath the front living room under the rug."

There were several issues that we were extremely disappointed in that really took the shine off our trip given the amount we paid for the week. The kids were very excited about the hottub but it was surrounded by large bushes preventing any natural light getting through, our kids were too scared to stay in after 10 minutes. The garden had an extremely rusty bench that only had 3 legs that was both dangerous (giving we have young children) as well as being an eye sore. The bbq was tiny and filthy so not fit for use. The garden was full of sharp leaf holly bushes that injured both our kids and dogs on a daily basis. There were several weeds/nettles across the garden which was generally unkept. Another dangerous point is that the angle of the driveway was about 45oC from the road facing downhill, we had several near misses when reversing out into a very busy road linking local towns. I also attempted to walk our dogs on a daily basis prior to going out for the day but the country roads by the house are very narrow with no pavements with cars often driving at 60mph. Unless you’re willing to drive there are no places within a reasonable and safe walking distance. Overall, whilst the house was nice, we do feel we overpaid considerably for our trip on reflection, which is a first for us having used Sykes for years… I had pictures to back up all of our claims including the hot tub and bench but there doesn’t appear to be an upload option.

Just to try and put this review in perspective for any readers - In the 7 years of running Penlaurel as a holiday let business we have NEVER had the need to charge against the good housekeeping bond however due to the unprecedented level of damage to the property both internally and externally after this visit we had no option but to attempt to at least recoup some of the cost to us. This of course had the effect of costing more for the holiday than originally planned. We are very proud of Penlaurel and all of the positive reviews we receive as the house and gardens are beautiful and are enjoyed by many families. With regards to the cellar door underneath the carpet in the front room - we have owned the property now for over 15 years and personally lived there for 8 and we are not aware of any cellar door under the rug in the front room - there is however a cellar door under the stairs (which is generally locked) The Hot Tub has purposely been placed in an area which is secluded and many guests love the fact that they cannot be looked upon by neighbours and so it is unlikely we will amend this feature. Unfortunately the lovely ornate ANTIQUE metal garden bench was damaged and was removed AFTER this stay which was a great shame as it was a lovely feature of the garden. The BBQ was sold to us as suitable for a family of 6 people (which should be suitable for the house) and is cleaned every week as part of our regular cleaning duties - we will however look in to this to ensure it meets our usual high standards and will amend if necessary. The Garden is a very mature cottage garden that does have a number of specimen plants some of which are holly bushes which are regularly trimmed. The garden generally has a large tidy every 6 weeks which is usually suitable however due to the unprecedented level of warm and wet weather this year this has had the effect of the garden growing a little quicker than usual and as we can only maintain the garden on a Friday we do our best to stay on top of this. With regards to the road it is easily possible to turn around in the driveway or alternatively reverse in to the property and so there should NEVER be a need to reverse on to the road (which has a 30mph village speed limit in place). Penlaurel does sit on a reasonably quiet B road which runs from Liskeard to Launceston and like many country lanes it does not have the benefit of footpaths and can be a little busier at rush hour times. Fantastic facilities and a huge hot tub. Garden was secure for our cocker spaniel who loved exploring the garden. The house is on a road without a path so it was tricky to take the dog for a walk from the house. The garden was a little overgrown and was in need of a tidy up but this wasn't a problem for us. We also couldn't find any recycling boxes which was a shame. Would definitely visit again.

We spent a week at the property in May 2024, great location for shops / supermarkets and exploring Cornwall. The garden is secure, our dogs loved it as much as we did. We had mixed weather but the covered Hot tub was a lovely way to spend a rainy evening! We enjoyed it so much - we have already booked to return this July!

We couldn’t fault the property, it was very luxurious. Plenty of room for 6 adults, 1 toddler and 2 dogs. We spent a lot of time in the spacious garden. The bears were a very nice unique touch. There was plenty of room for 3 cars on the gated drive. We would definitely recommend staying here. Most attractions are a 30 minute plus drive away.

Penlaurel was beautifully furnished and spacious, and we were delighted that we were able to take our three spaniels on holiday with us. The garden was lovely too, we only wish we could have spent more time in it but being October we knew this was unlikely to happen, however we had a thoroughly relaxing time in the hot tub and roll top bath. Thank you for the bottle of prosecco and Lindt choccies (my favourite!) which was a lovely welcome gift. (my only small suggestion would be to add a pop of colour here and there to break up the grey!)

We did find empty crisp bags in a draw which we thought was bad, more towels as we used them for hot tub also or more washing tablets , hot tub instructions and test strips to check water safety , The main thing for me and my mom and daughters were there are no chairs for dressing tables we found this odd and pointless to have the tables and no chairs ,Also a tv in all rooms in living area would be a good extra , overal we enjoyed our stay it was a lovely house these things would just make it a lot better

Thank you for your feedback. We will advise the cleaners to be a little more diligent in the future - Penalurel has been incredibly busy this year and unfortunately the empty bag of crisps was missed. Unfortunately the chairs for the dressing tables were broken by previous guest as they were quite fragile and so we have had to remove them and haven't yet got round to replacing them as yet as it is difficult to match with the furniture. The property does have 3 televisions and only 2 bedrooms don't have them. We feel this is sufficient. We have now increased the number of towels left per stay to accommodate the hot tub also. We do take your notes about the hot tub and we will be sure to leave clear instructions about the safe use of the tub. Property Owner

Great location with lots of places...both North and South Cornwall within a 30 minute drive and many interesting places closer to hand. Some fabulous farm shops nearby (Strawberry Fields and Tre Pol Pen) and a must visit butcher (Philip Warren...who supplies many top end restaurants) at nearby Pennygillam. Also great places to eat and can thoroughly recomment Coombeshead Farm, The Cornish Arms Tavistock and St Kew Inn. We particularly liked having various downstairs areas we could each use in the evening, with separate TVs, spaces to read etc, and the large dining table was welcome. Things to note: The road was noisier than expected - this seems to be a significant route used to get in and out of Launceston from the south, so there was constant traffic throughout the day and evening/night (did ease up as you would expect) - but the house is right on the road. We had a gardener turn up one morning without any warning, this was eventually dealt with as we wanted privacy, but felt like a lack of communication. The gardening did desperately need doing, the front was a bit small for 3 cars, but should be planned ahead of peak season.

  • "We booked Penlaurel because we wanted plenty of space even though there was just the two of us."

The house delivered all the aspects we were looking for. Good to have plenty of parking. The owner kindly agreed to us leaving the gates open during our stay which really helped when exiting and entering the property, otherwise we would have personally found it tricky (i'm not very agile) The secure gates are obviously there for the safety of anyone with dogs. A couple of small things that I would have found useful were...a soap dish on the wall of the large shower and a hook or small rail for the hand towel beside the wash basin in the en-suite. The property offers a choice of softer or firmer beds and this was helpful for us. Although the main lounge is very stylish and well presented, again, for the comfort of a softer sofa (with my creaky joints) we preferred to use the seating area in the extension off the kitchen. This is a lovely light area with a big television. And equally good for just relaxing and reading a book. We feel we made the right choice in booking Penlaurel and would stay there again. Thank you to the owners for the box of chocolates and bottle of wine that was a nice touch.

  • "The property was beautifully decorated to a very high standard however we found it a little formal and lacking in comfort."

In the main bedroom the bed was far too soft for our liking and led to uncomfortable nights sleep. The location was not good for dog walking and need to use the car daily. The garden was excellent for the dog and we thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub.

Thank you for your feedback which is greatly appreciated - we do accept that there are a few rooms in Penlaurel that have a more formal feel but we also have our snug areas which are less formal meaning that you can tailor your evening depending on the activity you would like to do. The Bed in the main bedroom is one of the highlights of many peoples breaks and so I'm really sorry that it didn't meet your personal requirement. The two other beds in the other rooms are slightly harder and so there are options within the property. Penlaurel is located in a very Rural area and so it is advisable that a car is needed to reach some wonderful dog walks within a very short distance away, we also have a large wooded area which is les than a 5 minute walk from the property at the bottom of the hill. We very much welcome your feedback Regards Will and Charlie Property Owner

Inside the cottage, my favourite room is the front room, the decor, very much to my taste and the ambiance is just so relaxing!!! The kitchen and utility room, again, very well catered for and very much to my taste! Out of all the places I have stayed, I have never felt so at home and I really mean that. There is a cosy little hideaway, which lets in lots of sun or perfect for listening to the rain too!!! It also has a PS4 for any of those gamers out there....... There are three very large bedrooms, all with I think, king size beds. One bedroom has ensuite and there is a family bathroom for the other two bedrooms, the bath is to die for! Again, all rooms decorated and furnished with such style. The bear theme around the house really does make this cottage and the bear at the top of the stairs is simply beautiful.
