  • "Meadow Bank Cottage is a lovely cosy cottage with a small pretty garden which has a brook and a nice summerhouse in which to relax."

The property is conveniently situated for two nearby National Trust houses; Greenway and Coleton Fishacre. The village of Stoke Gabriel is a 15 minute walk away and has a lot to offer. The only downside was finding the cottage with the postcode sending you to a nearby kennels! The signage needs to be improved. But don't be put you off, it's well worth a visit.

  • "Great holiday in this lovely well equipped cottage with great garden next to a stream, the cottage is in a quiet location but Stoke Gabriel is only a short walk away, this is our second visit to the cottage and we would highly recommend this cottage especially if you have a dog."

  • "Double bed too small."

Mattress hard, pillows flat. Shower cubicle filthy Cobwebs in kitchen Some light fittings not working Sofa's very tired and cushions flat. Beautiful setting with great gardens. Steps to cottage very steep and accessibility would be very difficult for less mobile customers

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. The double bed is a standard size (4’6”). We’re sorry and a bit surprised to hear that things weren’t quite right for you. It's a shame that concerns were not raised when our caretaker visited (as we might have been able to rectify them during your stay). We were reassured by your comment in the visitor book that you had “a fantastic week in this beautiful cottage Property Owner

  • "We loved it!"

Especially the Brook and the different terraces. It is idyllic. The only mention is if someone isn't good on their feet ... it is a steep climb up and down steps to get to and from the car parking space; to carry things to the house eg shopping, babies and luggage.

The photos don’t do it justice. The garden is lovely, come rain or shine there is always somewhere to sit. A lovely gentle walk in Stoke Gabriel and do much to do in the area.

  • "Cottage is traditional and comfortable with a lovely garden."

It is peacefully situated and an ideal place if you appreciate beautiful countryside. It is a fifteen minute walk into Stoke Gabriel via a surfaced footpath where there is a shop, two pubs and a cafe. The parking area has a fairly narrow entrance but is perfectly manageable in a normal sized car. Devon lanes are narrow though and care is needed in driving in this area when off the main roads.

  • "The garden is beautiful !"

! The fact that it is on several levels is most attractive. We also loved the little stream with the mother duck and 3 ducklings. Also the inquisitive cows ! It was a very good centre from which to visit many places. We had an extremely lovely week.

  • "The pictures of this cottage in the advert, particularly the outdoor living space, do not do it justice!"

The outside space is fantastic and not reflected in the pictures. I just want to say first of all, we had a wonderful family holiday in Devon, and thoroughly enjoyed staying at Meadow Brook. Wonderful cottage, with excellent outdoor space, which we made full use of. We would definitely come back. In terms of comfort, I Haven’t scored full marks because I found the main bed to be really uncomfortable and rigid. This affected my sleep which obviously isn’t great when on holiday. I would swap that out straight away. Cleanliness - Generally good. ok, its a dog friendly place but I felt downstairs could have been cleaner on arrival, there were quite a few dog hairs around. There was also unwashed dishes in the cupboard including a cafetière which is no fault of the owners. Facilities - we enjoyed all the outdoor settings, the bbq area, the summer house, the patio and stream. The off road parking is a bonus too. We were really pleased with the whole cottage and grounds.

We’re so pleased that you enjoyed Meadowbrook Cottage and all that it offers. Thanks for letting us know that the cleaning wasn’t up to our usual high standards. We’re really sorry about that. We've shared your comment with our cleaner, who has already addressed the timing issues that led to this. We hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future. Property Owner

  • "What a fabulous cottage and place to stay."

Welcome bottle of wine on arrival, everything lovely and clean. Beautiful setting next to the stream, it is terraced and so do need to be able to manage steps each day. Lots of great places to visit nearby, enjoyed visiting the beaches, sea fishing , and gardens at local national trust houses. Back to the cottage in an evening to watch the wildlife and say hello to the cows who come down to the stream for a drink. Would definitely visit again .

  • "We were unable to use the cooker as the outer panel of oven door was falling off."

A flan dish would be useful Very peaceful and a great place to stay if you can manage all the steps. ***Owner Response*** We're delighted that our guests found Meadow brook a great place to stay, but sorry that the oven broke unexpectedly. It has since been replaced. We were pleased to hear from our caretaker (who came out to see what could be done) that the lack of oven was not a problem for them.

It was a lovely clean and tidy house with everything that we needed. It is in a perfect location, you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, where it is quiet and peaceful but it’s under 10minutes to places with big supermarkets, beaches etc. We loved it- thank you!

  • "Delightful place, spotlessly clean, very well-equipped, and the background sound of the stream running past the property made for a very relaxing atmosphere and lulled me to sleep every night."

The cottage is definitely for the able-bodied, due to the fairly steep steps down from the parking-area, and responsible dog-owners and/or parents need to keep an eye on their charges as there is direct access to the stream down 3 steps just opposite the door. Our dogs loved it!

The property

This 18th century attached cottage is set alongside a brook beside a hedgerow lane one mile from Stoke Gabriel.

In a peaceful location and with country character, this is charming accommodation for small families and couples.

Head down the steps to the front door and into the well equipped kitchen with its flagstone floor and old fashioned pantry attached.

You can prepare meals from scrumptious Devon produce to enjoy at the table in the sitting room, a snug and cosy room with a wood burning stove, comfy seating and a window seat.

At the end of the day, climb the stairs to the two bedrooms which both have tranquil views over the brook with its wild ducks and kingfishers to spot.

You can hang your clothes in the little dressing room which also doubles as a handy room for a cot.

Outside is your pretty garden rambling over several levels, with raised lawns (steps up, care needed) a terrace for eating al fresco beside the brook, a seating area within a wall for sheltered barbecues and seats in a small summer house on one of the lawns, so you have plenty of choice of sunny places to sit quietly with a coffee or a good book.

If you feel like a wander, head to Stoke Gabriel on the ¾ mile of footpath which wends beside the stream and takes you to the village pubs, shops and restaurant.

Here in the village you can catch crabs from the quay or go boating on the creek.

For beaches, Torbay has a wide choice, including fun nostalgic seaside amusements.

For exploring interesting old towns, catch the car ferry to Dartmouth or go to Totnes beside the River Dart.

History buffs will love Coleton Fishacre and Agatha Christies old home at Greenway, both now managed by the National Trust.

Meadow Brook Cottage is in an ideal location for discovering the delights of the South Hams.
