  • "Nicest hosts you could ever wish for ."

The cottage is fabulous , old and characterful and if you want total peace (except for the daily parade of sheep or cows past the gate ) and privacy then do book . You do need to be a confident and competent driver to get up the single lane track . The Tarka trail and walks are on the doorstep but not accessible with a dog due to livestock in field including a bull but so many places to Visit within a 30 minute drive . We had a lovely stay

  • "We knew the cottage was on a farm but did not realise you had to drive through a very mucky farmyard every time, and down a very long narrow lane, we met a feed lorry at the narrow bridge and had to back a long way up the narrow twisty lane as far as the farm."

The nearest shop is quite a way away and having to cook our own food daily due to my medical condition the small fridge and small icebox proved to be a bit of a problem ,also the lighting in the kitchen was just wall lights and not bright enough to see to cook properly especially with the very small windows .As a very old quaint cottage it was very warm, but needs better lighting all through.

  • "Not being a very confident driver, I found the long single track road to the cottage rather worrying, especially when meeting the dustcart!"

We found the bathroom rather cold - a heated towel rail would have been appreciated.

  • "Very nice & helpful owners."

Certainly 'away from it all'. Adjacent to a working hill farm. Lovely wrap-round garden offering sun & shade. Lane walking on the doorstep though v steep so really need to drive to footpaths ~ and there are many lovely walks relatively nearby in this area of North Devon. From our perspective not the best stay for a dog who is active and needs walks on the doorstep. A main North Devon trail is literally on that doorstep but the wild cattle are evident and a potential hazard.

  • "The cottage was comfortable and cosy, despite the chilly weather, and the cake and tea on arrival was a nice touch."

The location was very peaceful, it was some distance from the main road so it did take a while to get anywhere but it was good to be able to walk from the door. A few minor suggestions for improvements: although comfortable, the double bed was very creaky so we kept waking each other up, a larger washing up bowl would be good (the sink is quite large but the bowl was tiny), the dehumidifier is probably too small for the space as it needed emptying several times over the course of our 3 night stay (we have a Meaco 20l one which is very effective and doesn't leak) and the heater in the twin bedroom didn't seem to work (although we didn't actually need it in the end as the stove was very effective). Overall we had a relaxing stay and would recommend the cottage.

Now that the rain has stopped on Exmoor, after 5 months, we have been able to take the dehumidifier out of the Cottage. During the Winter months, a 17th century (or more) old Cottage needs to be kept heated and dry. We have oiled the joints of the King sized bed - happy thought!. It is true that the Cottage is out of the city and "some distance from the main road", but hearing nothing on any evening but the breeze, the stream, and sheep and cows is why we are here, and why we thought you might find being here as much of a pleasure as we do. Thank you for your suggestions for the Cottage; we would look forward to your visit again. Property Owner

The kitchen was very well equipped and easy to prepare meals in. The cottage was lovely and clean, warm and cosy. We had milk and home made cake waiting for us after our long journey, which was very much appreciated and also a call to make sure all was ok. Madeleine and Johnathan were perfect hosts. Local supermarkets within 30 minutes drive. Lots of walks, beaches, shops and activities to do within 30 minutes drive. Also walks just outside the cottage. The quietest place we have stayed, apart from the cows and cockerels which added to the country atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

What ca I say except thank you so much from Enid Blytons five from your cottage , but only one thing we ask you ,please if you would get the rolling brush working on your hoover, because we felt so guilty we coul not clean the carpet as was possible, but perhaps you don’t know Madeline, I should have said something. Would like to comment though that it is in my opinion excessively expensive to change the date of changeover from a Friday to a Saturday and I had not realised when booking that it was quite so much more. A case of buyer beware, seemed unfair as the cottage would still have been available for a short break in the following week. Not the fault of the owners but a Sykes cottage policy I think.

Jonathan and Madeleine were lovely but not at all intrusive. We found the cottage comfortable and clean, there was plenty of hot water and everything worked! It was nice that so many of the basic things needed were in the cottage (things like bin bags, cloths, washing up liquid etc.). The cottage is off the beaten track (which is what we love) but a great base for day trips in North Devon....just make sure you're satnav isn't sending you on long distance routes down single lane tracks! I soon realised the longest route often the best.

Good to have that local contact. We were greeted with a tea tray with cake and a welcome note which was much appreciated. If it were allowed by the farm owner, directions on the farm buildings pointing us onward towards our cottage would have been encouraging. It is important not to follow the postcode on Tom-Tom because it points 180° in the wrong direction at the final crossroads. Head towards Whitefields on your map and you will be fine. We really appreciated the rural location, far from the madding crowd. Yet close enough to visit local beauty spots. Spacious lawns behind the house in which to enjoy the sunset . Excellent walks and cycles in the area. (Bring your ebike unless you are super young and fit!)

WHITEFIELD COTTAGE REVIEW Highly reccomend this charming cottage and its friendly obliging hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and would definitely book it again if we return to North Devon. The cottage is located in a blissfully peaceful location reached along primrose-studded lanes. We stayed in April and it was just beautiful to awaken to the sound of birdsong and baby lambs. Located right on the edge of Exmoor we also found it an easy drive to coastal attractions eg 25 minutes to Heddon Valley, 35/40 mins to Braunton Burrows/ Saunton Sands. The cottage has lovely original features like the lime plaster, exposed beams and old inglenook fireplace complete with bakers oven on one side. The oil-fired log burner within, looked the part and kept the cottage nicely warm.Theres also a very effective storage heater in the kitchen and wall-mounted electric convector heaters upstairs ( though we didn't need to use these) The cottage was tastefully furnished with comfy beds & sofa and beautiful antique dark wood chairs in the living room It is clean, cosy, comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped with everything you need ( but not rammed with endless useless clutter as we have found elsewhere) . It was great to have coat hooks and plenty of space for shoes in the porch plus a handy hose outside for muddy boots and dogs.We also really appreciated the OS maps and Bradt guidebook. The hedged garden( with handy clothes line) felt really private and we could find a sunny spot at any time of day. The morning sun falls on the porch so we enjoyed having breakfast there on the warmer mornings. Hosts - Madeleine & Jonathan- were extremely thoughtfull and accommodating . It was so nice to arrive to find a homemade cake and posey of fresh flowers from the garden They also left us a good supply of everything we needed (including teabags, milk, sugar a fresh packet of ground coffee and even the oft- forgotten coffee filter papers) so we were, able to brew up and take full advantage of the cake straight away! We really enjoyed our stay in Whitefield.

It's a beautiful old cottage, very cosy and well appointed. We visited with our twins (aged 3.5) and the set-up was really good. The cottage is nicely secluded (next to a working farm) and it's so quiet, you feel like you are alone in the country. We were a bit limited by the age of the children, but apparently there are lots of good walks nearby - we saw several packs of ramblers (despite the rain). The property

The North Devon centre, the town of Barnstaple 9.2 miles.

Rural Market town & Pannier Market of South Molton 8.4 miles.

This picturesque 17th century stone cottage looking as though it’s straight out of a fairy tale lies surrounded by lush greenery within the Devon countryside within Exmoor National Park, providing a holiday home with a difference for you and your loved ones.

Whitefield Cottage, together with North Whitefield House and the farm buildings at South Whitefield, stand on the site of an ancient small Saxon village dated to at least 1200 years ago.

The village is described in the Domesday Book (1086 AD) as ‘Whitefell’, perhaps because of the pieces of quartz found above the Cottage on Whitefield Common.

For walkers, the Tarka Trail runs just past the wooden gate.

With a working cattle and sheep farm next door and a large garden to roam, you can’t get more rural than this, making it a perfect choice for a family retreat where lasting memories will be made.

At night all you will hear are the sounds of sheep and cattle calling to one another.

Come through the old wooden gate and park up outside the cottage, before taking coats and boots off in the lovely window-surrounded porch, with 2 chairs to sit in the morning sun with a cup of warm freshly brewed coffee, then head inside to this warm and homely property.

Straight away be greeted by the pleasant and bright kitchen, with cream units and wooden worktops, it is in-keeping with a classic cottage style and home to an excellent range of appliances.

The china is a delightful blue & white, and also provided are attractive sturdy outdoor plates & glasses.

Move into the sitting area where a low oak-beamed original ceiling awaits, creating a snug ambiance that you will immediately want to relax in on the beautiful deep seating with antique birch rocking chair and large elm armchair covered in a rich embroidered throw.

The dining area with lovely wooden table and Windsor-style chairs are perfectly placed by the bow window allowing the window seat to provide seating for one half of the table, so all can gather around to enjoy a tasty meal or a competitive board game.

Facing all of the furnishings is a grand and rustic fireplace with old bread oven, housing an oil-fired woodburning-effect stove; look forward to getting this fired up on a colder evening after a day of excitement in Devon!

When it’s time to turn in, go up the wooden stairs to the first floor to find the bedrooms: first a light and airy twin room with American patchwork quilts on each bed, a window looking to the luscious greenery outside, and with a small chest of drawers & closet storage for your personal items and good lighting by each bed for reading.

Walk through the upstairs hall – an inviting snug space where a bookcase holds a selection of books to pick from with a large ‘teddy bear’ covered sofa to settle down into and plush cushions to put your feet up and read or catch up on email, before coming into the master bedroom which has a lovely iron bed frame covered in another American patchwork quilt, and features exposed red-brick and a hand painted mural of an oak tree, with fitted wardrobes and drawers for plenty of storage.

Freshen up in the neat bathroom, all white save for a royal blue feature wall, contrasting well with the bathroom suite, which has a bath with a shower over.

Enjoy the rural position of the property by taking your afternoon tea out onto the lawn whilst your furry friend stretches their legs, or have a meal using the seating for 4 at a redwood table and chairs.

If you’re seeking a truly rural ramble, you’re ideally positioned for exploring the delights of Exmoor National Park, where you can watch wildlife, stargaze, participate in watersports, and many more outdoor activities to suit all ages and tastes.

The Tarka Trail runs just outside the front gate up through open grazing land to the top of Exmoor to Shoulsbury Castle, 3 miles away, perhaps the largest and best known of the ancient Iron Age earthworks in Greater Exmoor, and to its surrounding Bronze Age burial mounds.

The cottage is also within reach of the four-mile long beach at Saunton Sands, with its world class surfing and all the open sand you could ask for, for picnics, exercising your dogs, building sand-castles, sun bathing or watching the tide come in.

In addition, there is the Exmoor Zoo, the Combe Martin Dinosaur Park, numerous art galleries including the Burton Art Gallery in Bideford, and the Lyn Valley Art and Craft Gallery in Lynton which both feature many of the excellent local North Devon art and craft.

For garden lovers there is the lovely Marwood Gardens, and RHS Rosemoor within 30 minutes.

For walkers, the moorland Tarka Trail, the breathtaking Southwest Coast Path, the spectacular Valley of the Rocks and many, many delightful wooded paths by the streams throughout the area.

The Village of Brayford, 2 miles away, has the 900-year-old Church of All Saints High Bray set on the hill above the Bray Valley.

It hosts 6 ancient bells, two of which were cast in the 15th century and are amongst the oldest in the world, and four of which are Victorian - You can hear the bell ringers practising every Monday evening.

In addition, there is a Village Market held in the Village Hall every second Saturday of the month with between 15 and 25 tables selling a variety of local produce and crafts, in addition to having tea, coffee & cakes available at tables around the Hall.

The River Bray by the Village Ford makes for a delightful picnic area with picnic table by the river, and dam building across the stream for all ages!

In reach of both coastal and countryside delights, Whitefield Cottage makes a marvellous base for your holiday to Devon.
