  • "Absolutely fantastic little cottage, location is wonderful and for 2 adults it’s perfect."

On that basis I have given it the highest rating. We had 2 dogs with us and wouldn’t recommend it as suitable for dogs in a wet October as the only door into the cottage is immediately off the road onto a light coloured carpet, it was stressful making sure the dogs were clean and dry enough to go back in each time they were taken out, which was every time they needed the toilet due to there being no garden. This is all in the information before you book but I think as it’s offered as suitable for dogs I didn’t really think it through. If we wanted to visit without the dogs I wouldn’t hesitate in choosing The Old Hatch as everything else about it is faultless.

  • "The property was spotless and clearly had been recently updated with a new kitchen and decorating."

Lovely linen and comfortable bed. Great position close to village and recreation field great for walking dog. Even able to park our small car outside. Only areas for improvement . TV reception pretty dire as hardly any signal, could only get a couple of channels and WiFi poor ( I know some rural areas have this issue) . Visitor information book scant . Would like to see more info and a bit friendlier for guest ( cooker instructions unhelpful as had to work it out myself. Just seemed unwelcoming and impersonal) Would have been nice to have had a few extra bits in kitchen eg bin bags, foil and a few more utensils ( all found in other Sykes cottages). Overall a lovely cottage just needs a more few welcoming touches. One final point a little mind your head sign on outside door area ( my husband who’s only 5’8” banged and cut his head several times)

  • "Amazing property, everthing you could want."

I would definately promote the showering facilties, they were fantastic compared to other properties we viewed online. Could do with a bigger fridge. The doors on the existing fridge could be hung on the opposite side for easier access. (10 minute job) A little fold away clothes airer would be useful. A larger sofa would have been nice and more comfortable. A few hooks under stairs might be an idea. The above are not criticisms, merely suggestions. Beautiful cottage set in idyllic surroundings. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay in this little cottage."

Very peaceful. Everything you might need in the kitchen. Could do with a step stool to reach the freezer maybe? The bed was very comfortable, the upstairs outdoor area was quirky unfortunately we weren't able to sit out because it rained but the location is ideal for dog owners just over the road from a beautiful recreation ground with its own dog field. We will definitely be returning.

  • "Great place to stay loved it!"

Sadly couldn’t complete the guest book as I didn’t have a pen with me, but would definitely return.

  • "Lovely stay in a fabulous location."

Would definitely stay again. Porlock is perfect and so much to do locally. Small points? The kitchen tap needs fixing down, the front door needs adjusting and the bedroom needs blackout curtains or the streetlight off at night. None of these would stop us returning though.

  • "Lovely little cottage in a picture postcard village."

Cottage is positioned in the centre of the village so brilliant for local shops and 3 pubs. Great position overlooking the recreation ground where we could walk our 2 dogs. Loved the roof terrace and listening to the small stream behind the cottage.

Could not get the “usual” TV programs Maybe a rubber strip on door frame from upstairs balcony as it is likely that you will bang your head as you come back into the shower room/we Parking is a very real problem Property generally very nice and peaceful

It’s clear during its recent renovation lots of attention has been paid to ensuring everything has been done to a high standard and is in place to make it a home from home feel. Will definitely consider rebooking when we want to stay in the area again

  • "It exceeded our wildest expectations in every respect from the moment we stepped in !"

Owners had spared no expense refurbishing it to the highest standards ! Exquisite furnishings, new sparkling kitchen appliances, cutlery, crockery, saucepans, frying pans, ultra modern induction hob, oven, toilet downstairs with wash hand basin, a very comfortable double bedroom upstairs with clean linen, towels etc., nice and cosy everywhere! From the bedroom upstairs, a most luxurious, spacious bathroom with a fantastic shower, separate wash hand basin, fitted electric toothbrush charger, if that is not enough, open another to door to a veranda protected by a secure railings to relax listening to sound of a clean, fast running stream! Very generous supply of toilet paper, paper towels, etc etc. Even clean towels for the two house trained pet dogs ! Step outside, a recreation ground with footpaths to walk the dogs. Owners Mr Alan and wife, Carolin McKay were easily contactable and helpful to answer any queries. Local people are very cultured, friendly and helpful and so are the motorists, never did anyone toot at me when I was hesitant wondering which way to turn to guide ourselves unlike the South East of England or where we live in Llandysul, Carmarthenshire ! I bet the Police have a relaxed time not having to worry about crime or accidents! I shared it with our Police Officer who would be envious! Local village centre is walking distance with a magnificent church, beautifully lit up with Christmas lights! Fancy a Chinese takeaway/restaurant ? Just 5 miles in Minehead at Golden House which we enjoyed thoroughly! We would stay at the Old Thatch again and again !

About the location

PORLOCK

Minehead 5.5 miles; Lynton 11 miles.

Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet. A fabulous village location with lots of outdoor pursuits to interest every visitor.
