  • "A really beautiful property and we had a nice stay."

However, I was with my toddler and older parents and the amount of steps both down and in the property was incredibly limiting and difficult to navigate. Also, considering the price of the property, things like the oven were in a disgusting state and had obviously not been cleaned or serviced in quite a long time. However the main downstairs area was lovely and we loved the balcony area. It seems like a wonderful house but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this for young families or elderly parents.

  • "We had the most wonderful weekend at Elphinstone - what a treat to stay in such a beautiful family home."

The house itself is built and decorated beautifully, and it was lovely to be somewhere where so much thought had gone into the furnishings and decoration. We loved eating our meals in the dining room in particular with that fabulous view. The children loved the nursery bedroom (which couldn’t have worked better) and the rest of us were very comfortable. I particularly enjoyed cooking listening to CDs on the wonderful sound system. This house exceeded all our expectations and we would love to come back to this special place and house.

Thank you for this lovely feedback. And delighted you enjoyed the CD collection! Property Owner

  • "Our weekend stay was so lovely, to celebrate a big birthday."

What an amazing house, with spectacular views! Everything you could need for a relaxing stay A few little things to point out.....the dishwasher didn't work...after we'd fully loaded it after a meal for 6. No water was coming into it. I phoned Pebbles the next day, and very promptly, a maintenance man came out. He was unable to fix it, as a specialist engineer was required. This was a shame, as having a working dishwasher would have been so beneficial. Pebbles did what they could, though. The heating didn't work in the very top bedroom, so the maintenance man left us 2 small oil filled radiators. The towel rail in that bathroom also didn't work. In the master bedroom there is a small wooden chair, by the window with the net curtain. One of the back support is snapped and quite sharp. This was in that condition when we arrived. Embarrassingly, the fire alarm was set off by cake candles (sorry!). No damage to property, just cake candles. We silenced the alarms. A rep from Pebbles rang to check we were ok, but unfortunately, about 5 minutes later, the fire brigade arrived. One of their team noted that this was his 5th visit to the house. It was thought, by the firemen, that Pebbles could in future, contact the fire alarm company and let them know if the fire brigade need to be called out or not, to save on resources. Great weather, and a very comfy home. Thank you

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy you had a nice stay and you had the chance to celebrate in the newly refurbished kitchen. The dishwasher should have been checked and run after being reconnected following completion of this refurbishment. This was an oversight for which we apologise. We are also sorry for the other issues that arose during your stay. We understand these were resolved quickly. Thank you for bringing these to our attention. Your comments are appreciated and help us ensure a good experience. Thank you also for being our first guests in 2024. Property Owner

  • "This is the 2nd time we have visited the Elphinstone property this year and cannot fault the place."

I did contact Sykes Cottages direct to report the kitchen tap, which was very, very loose, but they informed me that they knew about it and was ok to use. Otherwise, the place is a perfect place to stay and visit surrounding areas.

  • "Having stayed at Elphinstone pre Covid, we thought that it could do with a little tlc."

Nothing major just thought it was looking a little tired. Well equipped, Brilliant bbq. Stunning location There was a problem with the Fire Alarm, better instructions on the kitchen notice board would be an advantage took us about 20 mins to locate, in a cupboard marked electrics do not touch! It brought the neighbours in. Opinion of 7 people who stayed.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments, all feedback is welcome. We endeavour to maintain Elphinstone to a high standard, upgrades and improvements are continually carried out where appropriate. As you can see we usually receive excellent feedback, both on the website and in our own guestbook. We have improved the instructions for the fire alarm, which we hope will be helpful. We look forward to welcoming you again. Property Owner

Even though it looks incredible on the photos, it is even bigger and better in person. Totally magical. They were so many special touches for my little boy like the giant chalk board, playroom and toys. I just loved it and, as a family, we will always treasure the memories we made there. Thank you to the lovely owners.

So comfortable in every way, had a fabulous weekend with family ranging from 20 months to 90 years old! Nobody could believe how comfortable those beds are, mum (the 90 year old) said it was like lying in a cloud, with the windows open and the view to the river she was in heaven! 4 generations celebrating a 70th birthday, just perfect.

The house is beautifully and luxuriously furnished. The kitchen has everything for even the most serious cook. Plenty of comfortable sofas to sink in and enjoy the wonderful views to Newton Creek and the Yealm. The position of the house is exquisite with views from all the rooms and a wonderful veranda. Only, very minor thing, to be improved is the size and quality of bath towels provided which seem to be at odds with the luxurious comfort of everything else in that house!

The views of Newton Creek and the River Yealm are outstanding. The house was spotlessly clean and the welcome hamper, including scones and Devon clotted cream, was a lovely touch. Elphinstone is situated in a peaceful area and although we weren't blessed with the best weather the views from inside were spectacular and we managed to sit out on the terrace on some days. We also enjoyed some walks from the property into the surrounding countryside and we'd highly recommend the Ship Inn in Moss Mayo - fantastic food and customer service. A great holiday and we are planning a return!

The piece de resistance of the room however, would be the tri-fold doors that open out onto a decked area with panoramic views of the River Yealm.

The kitchen/diner is in the next room and also benefits from tri-fold doors opening out onto a seperate wisteria-clad verandah.

The dining area has a large dining table, perfect for a special occasion or family dinner, with the fully appointed kitchen offering an ideal place to cook up a delicious meal together.
