  • "We have stayed at this property before and wanted to book again as was a lovely first time."

However, we were extremely disappointed this time round. When arriving, I went in to find sand and dog hair on the sofa, I know dogs are allowed but you would expect this to be cleaned before next guests arrive. The carpets were dirty upstairs they had been hovered but dirt is well stuck in them the could do with a wash as socks were just turning black everyday. Had to go buy slippers to wear around house to stop from feeling dirty on feet all the time. Upstairs main bed wasn't sturdy and was broke on one side we think this could be resolved by putting new screws in but still should have been checked as now wasn't safe to sleep in so we had to use the 2 beds in other room. However this worked out better as main room has damp coming through and we have a 2 month old who the damp made her poorly along with my partner this was not ideal and nothing was even done until last day on Friday even when reported on the Monday and this only was the housekeeper coming around to find out what we meant by being dirty and the broken bed. We ended up leaving early due to them two being so poorly from the house we couldn't stay another night and definitely didn't want to. It was great to leave the property. This property could do with alot of refurbishment as it could make a great lovely little cottage again.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at the cottage. Unfortunately the headboard had come loose on the double bed. The bed was not found to be unsafe and the headboard has now been fixed. Apologies for not responding earlier in the week but we not made aware of the problem until Friday at which point we asked the housekeeper to go round. I am sorry about the damp patch on the wall in the bedroom. It may have arisen due to the atrocious weather conditions in the last few weeks. It will be investigated and any remedial work carried out. I am sorry that you became ill during your stay, however I do not agree that it was caused by the cottage because the central heating works well and the cottage is very warm. Best regards, Helen. • "Location and price are key."

This was our second stay at Clements Cottage. Location is superb, with free and ample parking on the doorstep, but still right on the harbour and only a short walk to either Goodrington beach or Paignton seafront and pier. Cleanliness and overall condition are still below average of what you’d expect from a Sykes property. On top: be prepared to bring your own toilet paper, washing up liquids, etc. But, we knew this in advance from experience, so weren’t disappointed. Clements cottage is good value for money, we enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback, it is very useful for us to hear what our guests think of the cottage. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and found the location superb. We try to give good value for money, however we are a self catering establishment and provide an initial welcome pack containing a few essentials which includes a toilet roll. Best regards, Helen. Thanks for providing the dog blanket for the sofa, great idea! Might be worth checking the toilet, it seemed to leak into the bowl sometimes and then refill constantly for a while, then stop. No problem to us, just thinking of your water bill. Thanks again for your great arrangements, everything went very smoothly.

Thank you for your feedback, it is much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. Best regards, Helen. Property Owner

Has everything you could need. Perfect decor, ideal. A proper little holiday home gem. Please don't change anything. Lovely little courtyard, kitchen well equipped, with more than you.would expect. It's the little touches like the dog towel that make the cottage and holiday perfect. Only 1 problem, I only had it for a week, so will definitely book again. And sykes cottages are so helpful and could answer all questions asked. Many thanks

  • "The location of the cottage is amazing, so close to the harbour, beach, cafes, pubs and restaurants."

The cottage sufficed but it was damp and all our clothes smell of damp, the walls were thin so we could hear the nextdoor neighbours tv which played through the whole of the night on 2 occasions. The laminate flooring isn't sealed so when I spilt a drink it ran down between the boards and as we walked on them the liquid was squishing up through. The wallpaper is bubbling and peeling off in lots of places presumably because of the damp and the sofas and chair have definitely seen better days. The bedrooms were much nicer than downstairs but the double bed mattress was very uncomfortable. I don't usually moan and if you hadnt asked I wouldn't have told you. It was our first time using sykes and I was worried our 2nd week in Warwickshire would be similar but Wigrams is exceptional. We would return to the location again as I have family in torbay but we won't be going back to clements cottage.

We are sorry that the cottage did not meet expectations. The cottage has since been decorated and a small damp patch found on an external wall treated. The other issues mentioned have been addressed , the mattress on the double bed is now much more comfortable the sofas in the lounge replaced with new modern furniture. Photographs will be updated on the website. Property Owner

  • "The location of the property was perfect and we had a wonderful time in Paignton and can’t wait to return."

The cottage however wasn’t as expected, the pictures do not replicate the decor as it is now. These need updating. The bathroom needs a complete plumbing overhaul with the toilet over flushing, the sink taps not turning off correctly and the bath taps/fittings very lose. There is also an issue with the drainage pipes in the garden as all the shower water was overflowing from the drain into the garden. The plugs didn’t fit bath or sink either, both unable to retain water. Our biggest issue was the cleanliness, unfortunately the living room, kitchen and bathroom were very dirty. The floor were very dirty (our socks were black within 10 mins of arrival) and the hoover smelt really bad as did the sofa. We had to clean before we could use anything. Upstairs wasn’t too bad. We would stay here again but only if the above issues were addressed/fixed and the cleaning team overhauled/replaced. It’s a shame the owners have been let down by this.

We are sorry that the guest was disappointed with the cottage. We thank them for bringing these problems to our attention. The problems have been addressed and the smelly vacuum cleaner replaced. Property Owner

We had a problem with heating in the beginning and made contact with a person through a phone number ( temperature was to cold ) was sorted the same day. Also we found the cooker a challenge to work but got there in the end. The sink plug in the bathroom lets water escape ( to small for the hole ) and also the toilet seat is becoming loose. There were a few things left there for us to make use of a nice thought.Would not book again because of the busy road .

The heating is set automatically at 19C for guest arrivals. The central heating controller is located on the wall in the lounge and can be easily adjusted by guests. Instructions for use of the cooker and central heating are available in the guest information folder provided. Thank you for the information about the sink plug and toilet seat, these will be rectified. Property Owner

I expected much better standard for a premium priced high holiday season let.

Thank you for your feedback. The bathroom has 2 doors according to the building regulations in operation when it was fitted. We are looking at updating it when the cottage is vacant during the winter. The cleaners do not clean the outside yard but will speak to them about anything that was missed inside. We have had no other complaints about the bedroom furniture sticking but will look at it when we are able to gain access. The only issue may be the lack of parking but we bought an eight day permit from the torbay council website which covers all of the car parks in the area including the harbour car park two minutes walk away. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, we felt the living room seating could have done with an update but was still comfortable. A couple of tips from us, buy a car park pass and park in the harbour car park, use the ferries from the harbour to visit Torquay and Brixham, use the steam train from paignton to visit Dartmouth, and have a meal at the harbour inn or curious crab both only 2 minutes walk away and both have great views from their outside terraces

  • "This property is shabby and run down."

Downstairs smelt very fusty especially the old settees. The light above the wash basin did not work. To shut the door to use the wash basin you have to go into the toilet/bathroom to shut it. The toilet seat was loose and the bathroom smelt damp. The toilet just about fits in between the bath and the wall and you have to manoeuvre round the positioning of the toilet roll holder to sit on the loo! There are no radiators in this area so I presume in cold weather you would have to leave the bath/toilet and wash basin doors open to get some heat in from the kitchen. One of the light bulbs in the kitchen did not work. The outside yard needs weeding and generally looks uninviting. There are 3 stairs in the living room before you turn to go upstairs. There is a door above the 3 stairs that can be shut with a connection on the doorframe. This connection was loose and hanging off and my husband caught and ripped his canvas jacket on it and had he not been wearing a jacket he probably would have needed stitches in his arm. We were visiting relatives and had we not of been celebrating a family birthday on the Friday we would have left on the Monday when we arrived. I honestly cannot believe that you can charge £522 to stay in this property for 5 nights. I would not stay in it if you paid me. On a brighter note I have now finished washing every article of clothing we took with us hence getting rid of the fusty smell they were infused with.

We wanted for nothing. Everything was there at hand ie; cooking ,laundry facilities etc. The comfort and feel of the place was really good. The location was perfect. Parking could have been an issue but we managed to work round that without costing us to much. One issue that we did find was trying to work out what rubbish went into what bin and what rubbish was classed as one type and what was another, so apologies to the owner for that because when we arrived there was already a square plastic bin with mixed rubbish in it. Don't let this cloud any judgement on the actual cottage, the premises are absolutely brilliant throughout 10/10. Couldn't be any better.

It is in a perfect location and had everything we needed. The bathroom downstairs is a bit annoying but only really in the night. There was no cupboard space for groceries in the actual kitchen but there is space in the bathroom, which sort of acts as a utility room. Parking was no problem as we parked in the public car park 2 mins away and I paid for a Torbay weekly parking permit in advance for £35. There are restaurants, bars and cafe really near by and the local shop is a stones throw. If you are taking the family dog you couldn’t find a more perfect spot. Roundham Head is just around the corner and brilliant for letting your dog have a good run. Goodrington also has a brilliant park for dogs and people alike and is a 10 minute walk. We would definitely consider staying again.

However I did contact Sykes customer service just before going, to ask 2 questions 1) the previous reviewer highlighted a mould problem in the bathroom, and I wanted it dealt with before I arrived - it was, but no one from Sykes phoned or emailed me before I got there to discover it for myself, even though I emailed again several times. I do not think Sykes customer service met expectations. And 2) an email from Sykes warned at the last minute that although the ad said free parking, that was no longer possible May to September - So I wanted to know how much it would be. I was told that the owner when asked by you had said they never had any trouble finding free parking nearby, but there was a car park charging 2.50 per day very close, anyway. Well as it turned out the owner was wrong about that, or had never visited during a heat wave weekend, because we had to park a long way away, making unloading the car a problem. And the fee at the carpark was £10 per day, so anyone booking the cottage needs to be warned to factor in that extra cost to their holiday budget.
