  • "Negative:- Apartment smells of damp, especially 2nd bedroom and after rain."

Had to open doors and windows on arrival for an hour to air. Noise from apartment above. Sacks of smelly rubbish left in and on top of bin outside back door. Contacted local Sykes office for this to be removed, but still there when we left at the end of the week. Surprised and disappointed that no waste separation or recycling bins provided, especially as neighbouring properties had them in abundance. No guest comments book provided. . Positive:- Good location. Well equipped kitchen (excepf for no microwave utensils) Spacious

  • "We mostly loved our stay at Keel Row."

The apartment was very well equipped and the views just fabulous. However, there were some negative points. It was advertised as being a short stroll from the centre of town which we thought was perfect for us. It was a very short stroll but the walk back was very hard work. My husband and I are in our sixties. Serious gym goers as well as golf and tennis players. Even the teenagers we were with struggled. We would defo not have booked this accommodation if we had known this. We spent an extra £60 on parking whilst we were there. There is a serious issue with soundproofing at the apartment. We could her people talking, moving around, what television programme they were watching. We even heard them in the loo ! ( and worst but best not go into that other than our teenagers found it embarrassing) We also have a holiday home ourself that we rent out, we have always thought that a good nights sleep is paramount and pride ourselves that we have never had any complaints . The pillows at the apartment were just dreadfull, hard and bulky. I did complain and asked for them to be replaced. We got just the one pillow. Not good enough.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback We are thrilled you had a lovely time at The Keel Row. We can only apologise that you felt misinformed regarding the location of the property, due to the nature of the town being situated on an estuary a lot of the town is elevated, however this is usually accompanied by fantastic views which The Keel Row has in abundances. We are truly sorry you were only delivered one pillow, that was a miscommunication on our part, we have past your comments onto the owner who will look to address. We do hope you enjoyed all Salcombe has to offer and look forward to welcoming you back to the area soon. Property Owner

  • "The property was in a stunning location with fabulous views across the estuary."

It was clean, comfortable, very well equipped with plenty more than the 4 of everything that we have encountered in other properties. There was plenty of seating both inside and out. We loved the charm of the slightly dated family house, with many original features. It had real character. It hasn`t had the holiday home makeover that so many places have had. We could have spent most of the week just looking at the view! There was occasionally a slight smell from the en-suite which we had read about in a previous review. As those people did, we just used the bathroom and informed the office on leaving. The occupants in the flat above need to be advised that sound carries down. Putting simple felt discs on the kitchen chairs would help a great deal to cushion the sound of them as they are moved across the floor.

Thank you for your positive revue. We have worked hard to create a holiday home with real character, so it is rewarding for us to see this remarked on. The slight smell from the en-suite has now been rectified, so thank you for bringing this to our attention. Property Owner

  • "Keel Row is wonderful."

We stayed for 5 nights and didnt want to leave. The flat is a real home from home with all you need provided. The view from the terrace and sun room is to die for. I had read a previous review regarding the shower hot water and also a sewrage smell in the bathroom but still booked to stay and i have to say that there were no issues with these at all. I understand that should any issues arise, sykes come in to deal with them straight away. Please note though that if you have mobility problems, the flat has several steep steps to it and also the walk back from the town is up a steep incline too. We will definitely be back again and highly reccommend it.

On the plus side fantastic views. Needs to be mentioned that its not easy to walk to the beach, as its a fair way and steep hills, especially with beach gear.

  • "The online photos flattered the property as presented to us."

The ratings above whilst harsh, we feel are justified in this instance. The main issue we had was intermittent 'pulses' of foul smelling sewerage in the main bathroom. We reported this to Coast and Country Cottages but they were unable to trace the cause on their one daytime visit. We weren't surprised as we'd been keeping all external doors and windows open for ventilation. As mentioned, the smell was intermittent but did seem to occur mostly (but not exclusively) early evenings. We tried to isolate the possible cause by association with what we'd just done but that didn't help. The en suite macerator has warnings about placing inappropriate articles down it. Quite understood. As we don't like this type of toilet and there being only two of us, we restricted our toilet use to the conventional system in the bathroom. By mid week, we were so fed up with this sewerage problem, we minded to cut short the holiday. However, Wednesday (bizarrely) was OK smell-wise, so we didn't leave. On Thursday we had a particularly strong 'pulse' which confirmed our leaving decision. On Friday morning we popped down to Coast and Country to let the know we were leaving prematurely and why. We'd left shortly after midday. From what we could see, the property has not been let this week; this time should really be used to determine what's causing the problem. Overall, a disappointing experience which didn't reflect well on Sykes Cottages or Coast and Country Cottages in terms of monitoring the state of properties they advertise and maintain. It is the first time we have booked with these companies. Clearly, we now have reservations about using them again. To end on a positive note, the Coast and Country staff were very polite and understanding.

Many thanks for taking the time to send through your thorough feedback, I can only apologise that the property was not satisfactorily presented on arrival. When you initially reported the smell we attended that same day and at this time we attended there was no smell present, therefore we used some drain unblocker and hoped that the problem had been rectified. Unfortunately we now know that the smell is intermittent and will be sending a plumber to do a thorough investigation. We are disappointed to read that you have reservations about using us again, we pride ourselves on Customer Service and we have clearly fallen short on this occasion. We do hope you had a lovely holiday despite the matters raised and enjoyed all that Salcombe has to offer. Property Owner

  • "Keel Row is a great property, with stunning views and close to the main attractions in Salcombe."

Yes, it is up a big hill, but this means there are some great views of the whole estuary, with plenty of light coming into the house whilst still very quiet. The house itself had everything we needed for a week's stay for our family of four, with all the amenities needed. It is also very helpful to have easy access off-street parking.

  • "Keel Row is an exceptional property with fantastic views of the estuary and sea from the conservatory and balcony."

It is at the top of a very steep hill so going into Salcombe is easy but walking back up is not for the faint hearted, although the bus service does stop right outside the property. It has all the equipment that you would want for your stay and we were more than happy with our two weeks holiday.

  • "The apartment was very well kept, comfortable and had very good facilities."

Despite some previous reviewers complaining about cleanliness we found it fine. We had an issue with the pump in the en-suite bathroom which got worse over the week. We rang on the Friday morning and a plumber arrived Friday afternoon and sorted it. We should have rung earler! Appears a previous 'tenant' had put something they shouldn't down the loo, despite the clear warnings not to do so. The reason we only gave 3 out of 4 for the Accuracy of the Listing was that, although the notes did mention the steps up to the front door, we were surprised at how steep they were. Quite scary carrying heavy suitcases back down, although there is a handrail. Also the property was up very steep hills from the town (we did not know Salcombe), so by the time we got back in to the apartment we were exhausted! We are fit and healthy early 70's used to walking, but anyone who was not would really struggle with this property I think. Certainly would not be suitable for young children or for less agile people.

  • "The property is a great size for a family of four and the views from the terrace and sun room are second to none."

There is a smell of damp in the hallway and twin room of the property and whilst I realise that the property is old and built into the hillside, I can’t help thinking that perhaps more could be done to help alleviate the problem, thus reducing the smell. Otherwise it was a lovely property and we would stay again if only they would accept pets. Because of this, we have booked a different property for our next stay.

  • "The property can do with a deep clean, which i was suprised this was not carried out through the lockdown, we entered the property and we found that it had not been cleaned properly after the last guest, the cooker top was covered in fat, table cloth had not been wiped over ,the dining table in the garden room was covered in crumbs, floor had not been swept or moped, the list can go on."

....., the water pressure to the showers was awfull, and to finish it off we had to contend with the tenants upstairs walking around on hard flooring which was like a herd of elephants, and there friends had arrived for a couple of days and i felt that i was in the room with them, laughing, chatting and the dog barking, the cost of the property was not cheap and i would have expected a better standard of cleaning.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay. We were so sorry to hear that the cleanliness fell short of our usual standards and please be assured all your comments have been passed to the cleaning team to address. We can confirm that following your stay, a plumber was arranged and has rectified the water pressure concern. Thank you again for your comments and we hope that we can welcome you back to the area soon. Property Owner

  • "Excellent location, fantastic views from the terrace and conservatory across the estuary."

Will definitely come back! Only drawback was the showers often ran too hot or too cold and the neighbours in the flat above had a dog pounding around that was very intrusive, also the conservatory roof leaked like a sieve in heavy rain

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback, we are thrilled you enjoyed your stay at The Keel Row. We are very grateful for your comments and have passed them onto the owners who will look in the points you have raised. The owner has informed us that the flat upstairs has just had new flooring which we believe will eradicate any noise. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope that we can welcome you back to the area again soon. Property Owner
