  • "We had a wonderful stay everything in the Boathouse was perfect."

Ty was extremely helpful. We did stay in the main house with our family a few years ago and had a wonderful time, love the house. Just cannot say enough really. Very happy.

  • "We stayed at the Boathouse for 1 week."

Light, clean, welcoming and idyllic is how I would describe it. The weather was beautiful and only added to charm of the place. The setting is just amazing along with the wild life. The local area is just as stunning and we enjoyed learning some history and visiting new places. Dartmouth is a lovely local town and great place for fresh fish and chips on a sunny day. Dartmoor national park is also on the doorstep and is another special place, well worth a visit. It's safe to say, we will be back again next year! Dean

  • "The boathouse is idyllic!"

We loved every moment of our stay - so much so that we've already booked our 2nd visit for next Summer! 'Extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean, with everything we needed. The location is breathtaking - total seclusion - we loved some days sitting on the balcony in the sunshine, just taking in the view. The walk through the fields and woods to get there was beautiful. Only a short walk to the wine tasting - highly recommend! Ty was fantastic - very friendly and helpful! Thank you, we can't wait to be back!

  • "This boathouse is an absolute gem."

If you are looking for a total escape from the madness of everyday life and some glorious views of the river, then this is the place for you. Every afternoon a seal popped up to say hello and we saw numerous water birds every day and even watched a crow one afternoon flying up in the air and dropping oysters from quite a height to smash the shells so he could eat them. Very clever. We couldn't fault this place in any way.

We had never returned anywhere before, but are now looking to book our 3rd visit. It's a delightful 'get away from it all' dream cottage where you can watch the boats go by with a large glass of something.

  • "Beautiful boathouse in a stunning location."

We have returned many times now and intend visiting again as soon as possible. The recent upgrades are fab, especially the WiFi for the Smart tv, although you’ll be too busy simply watching the river to care. Just be aware that it’s a short walk from the car to the boathouse ( Luggage is transferred) but its well worth the minor inconvenience. I’d also suggest taking some groceries with you, at least for your first evening.

30% price hike!? That is crazy

  • "It needs to be clearer on the instructions that you park at the farm and walk though a field, through the woodland and then down 71 steps."

It takes approx. 13 minutes to get from the car to the house. We loved that, but many others may not be aware and might not be quite so enthusiastic! The kettle was very temperamental and probably needs replacing. Aside from that the house was absolutely perfect.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are pleased to hear your enjoyed your stay. The access to the property is detailed in the property description - maybe you missed this when you made the booking. Property Owner

  • "A real home from home, and more."

'The pre-booked' Sunday morning sailing regatta was great entertainment!. Really appreciated the extra mile our hosts went to. From the entrance via the vineyard, to the tame hello from the beautiful cattle, the visit from the seal, and impeccable weather. A real pick me up after having to defer our visit from May. (Thanks to Ty for his discreet yet readily available help too). We went home significantly fitter than we arrived due to the (stunning) daily walk to and from the car. We never book to return to a property, we have now. Fantastic property, superb location, excellent surroundings. (Just don't tell anyone, as it's our secret !).

Ty, was very helpful in taking our trailer and canoes to and from the boathouse. We strongly recommend this holiday let, even with the 75 steps, because of the peace and quiet, wildlife and views including our daily visit from the seal.

  • "Incredibly relaxing, superb location."

It really is as nice as the pictures, if not nicer ! With hindsight it was probably worth considering hiring a boat and it would be useful if that kind of information was more readily available. Given the fact 2020 is a strange year with Covid-19 we were impressed with the thought given to preparing the property and the kind and helpful advice/service by given Ty.

  • "Although the boathouse is secluded there is always something happening, from the various species of wildlife to the boats and canoes on the river."

Our children aged 12 & 13 were never bored and always found something to occupy their time, we took laptops etc but didn't use them ( the wifi isn't the best ). At low tide we would go off exploring and enjoyed some lovely walks , high tide could never come soon enough for the kids, they loved crabbing off the mooring. Everything we needed from supermarkets to days out was within a 15 minute drive, Brixham harbour was a lovely place to visit. My husband chose to drive down to the steps instead of parking at the designated spot, he had no problems doing this in decent conditions and if we had got stuck Charlie would have been on hand to tow us out. The boathouse is a hidden gem! We were blown away and have rebooked for next year.

  • "Fabulous location with excellent accommodation."

Clarification needs to be made regarding accessibility as holiday makers need to understand that it is not a case of being able to park near the boathouse there is a hilly walk involved and luggage needs to be brought down by the farm manager.

  • "If you like peace, quiet and tranquility, watching the changes in the river and the wild life, jumping salmon, trout and the eating frenzy when the little fish are forced to the surface, this is the place for you."

The boathouse is well appointed, clean. Walks around the estate (working farm) including a vine yard and oyster farm (low tide) added to the experience. Charlie and Becky were excellent hosts, thank you.

  • "The holiday was fantastic, lovely views, starry skies."

Wonderful location. The only comments we have is that the hobb is not very user friendly, lots of grumbling and puffing to try and get it to work. Suggestion would be to have a simpler hobb that is idiot proof. Would be a nice idea to have a astrological telescope as the night skies were amazing. We have already booked again for next year.

The property

About 1¼ miles from Stoke Gabriel, on the Sandridge Barton estate, this perfect little boathouse was built in 1760 as a bathing house.

It sits in one of the most secluded, private and romantic settings in south Devon where the Dart meanders between Stoke Gabriel and Dittisham.

A haven from almost everything, the Boathouse is accessed by walking 600 yards through a gentle valley and woods.

You and your luggage will be transferred by Landrover to the top of the 71 steps leading down to the house.

Inside is extremely beautiful and comfortable, water reflects gently on the ceiling of the lovely, large, oak-floored living space.

Floor-to-ceiling French windows stretching the width of the boathouse fold back on themselves, opening the room to the balcony and river scene beyond.

Up on the first floor are two bedrooms, both with beams and lofty ceilings to the apex - one with a super king size double bed, en suite bathroom and French windows to a small balcony; and a pretty twin.

Right on the water's edge, The Boathouse is surrounded by a wide, covered balcony with a table and chairs - this might be the best place in Devon for al fresco dining, with thick woods behind.

If you can bear to leave, there is lots to see and do nearby; the village of Stoke Gabriel is well situated, with three pubs, shops and a restaurant, and slopes down to a little quay - good for crabbing!

There are sandy beaches at Torbay, and the quirky town of Totnes is just four miles away, or you can take a ferry to Dartmouth, or visit the National Trust's Greenway and Coleton Fishacre.

No matter what you decide, you're assured of an unforgettable holiday at this unique and magical place.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £350.
