  • "Penhaven worked really well for our family get together."

The house is well equipped and comfortable. The welcome basket was lovely. Supplies were made available and although we came well-stocked ourselves, we were grateful to find rice when I couldn't find ours at the 11th hour. We made good use of all the spaces including the garden. The bunk beds would only work for children, so 8 adults is about the max it can comfortably accommodate. Crackington Haven is a beautiful spot, the pub and bay is a 25 minute walk away, longer on the way back because it's uphill. There are lots of interesting places nearby, great if you have your own transport, and also much of it is on a bus route - although we didn't try this out. I would love to come back here.

Spacious and very comfortable, just as described. It was great having the family space downstairs and separate lounge upstairs with plenty of comfortable seating. The local shop next door is excellent, and was even open for a couple of hours on Christmas/boxing day. Crackington is a lovely, friendly place and people would say hello and chat when we walked our dogs. The walk to the beach took us about half an hour. It is a big hill, but not all the way! At the beach is a fabulous pub called Coombe Barton, we popped in several times for drinks and food, dog friendly too. There is a lovely looking cafe down there too, but we didn't get a chance to try that. A wonderful house, in a spectacular location, even in wet and very windy December!

So pleased you had a special Christmas down in Crackington, it’s such a special place, the local volunteer run shop, the Coombe Barton pub and the beach cafes, which I can confirm are both brilliant too …. Amazing hot chocolates ! N Neil Property Owner

All the beds were super comfy and the secure garden meant that our pooches couldn't escape. A very comfortable space with all the things from home you'd expect to find in the kitchen drawers! If it's on, we recommend the farmers/craft market next door at the Institue on a Sunday. We bought loads of tasty goodies here and also won a prize on the tombola. We kept the bird bath topped up all week and had so many birds taking advantage of the water. We briefly met Neil the owner, lovely guy too! Constructive criticism:- 1. The grass had been cut but the clippings had been left which meant that every time we walked outside during the morning, the dewy grass was walked in the house (obviously, the dogs never wipe their feet). 2. Some big old cobwebs in the skylight going up the stairs. Not a huge issue i know but some attention to detail is being missed here. 3. The back door (by the washing machine) was almost impossible to lock. Definitely needs some attention as when we arrived it looked locked but wasn't. Would i recommend Penhaven - absolutely! We had a fantastic holiday and having such a beautiful place to come back to made all the difference.

Thanks Adam, great you had a good time, sorry about the back door ….. lock has now been replaced. Hope to see you again …. Neil Property Owner

There's easy access to places like Boscastle and Tintagel. The great little community shop next door run by volunteers stocks most things you need including the contents of the great courtesy hamper that greeted us on arrival!! The Coombe Barton pub serves great food and local beers, it's better to book a table (table 7 has a sea view) as it's very popular. The walk back up to Penhaven is steep but achievable and there's also an occasional bus. The house itself has pretty much everything you expect, we made good use of the BBQ for some al fresco dining and we found no sign of peeling wallpaper or mould as a previous review mentioned. Thanks for a great week.

The kitchen dining area served as a useful gathering area with the upstairs lounge a nice retreat for evenings. The community shop and park were ideally located and we made use of both. Unfortunately, the weather was not ideal but on the days when it was dry for a while it was gave an insight into how comfortable it would be for inside/outside living. A neighbour was also doing some heavy demolition work starting each morning at 7:30, which was unfortunate but did not affect our overall view of the property.

On arrival a beautiful welcome hamper that was much appreciated. Staples in cupboards and jars that was simply brilliant too. Lounge area open and welcoming and the upstairs lounge has a TV and equally comfortable furniture. The fire log burner is a brilliant addition and makes it lovely and cosy. Lovely secluded garden that's safe for the dog to go out in. We arrived in the middle of Storm Eunice leading into storm Franklin and any previous damage was unseen and tidied away by the housekeeper. Sadly during our stay we came home to a powercut - no ones fault just one of those things. The owner of the property had already contacted us on arrival to make sure everything was fine and I let him know when the power went off. He was so brilliant and did everything he could, even though the power cut was out of his hands. Superb host - thank you so much Neil. We ate at the local Combe Barton Inn which had beautiful food and welcoming staff and is also dog friendly. The Cabin Cafe was also a delight and is highly recommended- they were also super lovely during the power cut and provided bacon rolls and hit drinks to the local community. There is a little beach down there too which is very pretty. Next door to the house is a crackington shop ..very small, staffed by locals but very well stocked for all essentials. If I had one criticism it would be the showers ..... they are electric and the intermittent hot and cold water and lack of water pressure can be amnoying ....but first world problems !! Didn't detract from the wonderful time we had but would be nice if they were upgraded to be 5* like the rest of the property. The house is situated in a beautiful village within walking distance if the beach, although its an EXTREMELY steep hill back up !! It is quite far off the beaten track so a good 15-20 minutes to the nearest town. Thank you Neil we gad a wonderful time and you were an amazing host. Would recommend to any large families wanting a laid back, comfortable break.

Thank you for your feedback and patience during the storm and for letting us know about the roof damage and power cut! I’m glad it didn’t detract too much from your stay, it really was a one in ten years storm ! Hope to see you again, with out the storm ! Neil Property Owner

The games room with floor beanbags proved a great hit with the five gamers in our party as did the good selection of boardgames. There was a separate TV room for anyone who didn’t want to join in. The house was set in a friendly village with a clear sense of community spirit including a produce stall on Sunday mornings. Plenty of picturesque quiet lanes to walk the dog. The walk down to the beautiful Crackington Haven bay was a hilly challenge but there are buses down and the cliff walks have fantastic scenery. The café and hotel near the beach provided good menu with the Cabin Cafe selling top drawer Cornish ice cream and a good vegan selection of light meals and cake. Thank you to the owners for the welcoming cream tea and Prosecco. We very much enjoyed our stay.

  • "Just return from a lovely week away with our family however the accommodation was disappointing."

It was definitely not a 5 star property would rate nearer a 3 star compared to the property we stayed in last year. It needed to be deep cleaned right through, the extra cleaning for Covid of wiping down door handles with bacterial spray is good but the whole place was dusty and hadn't been cleaned through for a while you could tell by cobwebs in areas and dirt under furniture. Some of the bathrooms were not cleaned to a normal standard with one of showers been dirty and a few of the toilets not fully cleaned. The blinds on the back door were covered in some kind of stain or dirt which looked awful. We had an issue with closing the back patio door so didn't use it after the 2nd day. The standard of the pans was below a 3 star and not what we expected. Lots of things needed updating and were showing signs of wear and tear not expected in a 5 star property. Some things mentioned in reviews 2 years ago not been touched like the garden furniture and the back decking area steps need fixing which could be dangerous. Someone commented on the handsets for the gamers not working which we managed to fix a couple so they could be used. The size of the property was good however not a big enough area to sit more people on sofas downstairs to relax whilst the kids were in the garden. Good location for the area and sightseeing and a good play park for the kids behind the house.

Thank you for your feedback, which has come as somewhat of a shock to us as in over 5 years of letting out Penhaven we have had almost entirely very positive feedback. We were happy to hear you had a lovely week and that the location and property were very nice. The property is deep cleaned every changeover and Covid cleaning guidelines are followed with attention to detail, I visit regularly myself to check too. The garden furniture, large table and chairs to seat ten, was replaced in April this year so is new. Following your feedback we have checked and replaced any worn oven trays and casserole pots, as they have had rather a lot of use this season. New batteries have also been put in all the tv remotes and games handsets, along with additional spares in the utility room. The issue with the back patio door was checked by my housekeeper and all four of the sets of back doors seem to be working correctly. We hope you will visit Penhaven again in the future. Very comfortable, very clean, peaceful and equppied to a very high standard. Most of the 5 star bedrooms are downstairs and one upstairs and are spread out across all corners of the house making them very private. There are also plenty of other areas to chill out away from others if you want but the massive family room incorporating the large and very well equipped kitchen, utility room, dining room and one of the sitting areas is perfect for all to enjoy together any time of the year. The garden is secluded and a great size. It was even safe enough for our little dog to play and explore unsupervised. Fabulous location for exploring the west coast including Bude, Boscastle, Tintagel, Port Isaac and Padstow and so many coastal walks. The only downside is that the walk to Crackington Haven beach is more than a mile and includes a very steep hill but Cornwall is full of hills so it's not a deal breaker and it was worth the walk. Highly recommended. Ms Hayter

The property is spacious, clean and was as described on the website. It is perfectly situated for exploring the north where Bude is, or to the south for Padstow, Boscastle, or Polzeath Beach. Crackington Haven beach was also lovely but a shame that it was a bit far, steep and a narrow road to walk to with younger children. We appreciated the warm welcome of freshly made scones and other goodies to keep us going. However, some more toilet roll wouldn't have gone a miss as we ran out after 3 days! Also when we went to use the torches they were corroded inside and not working which was a little disappointing. It was great to have a park so close at the back of the property for the kids and a good sized garden for hem to play in. The outside furniture and wooden planters could do with replacing though, to bring them up to the standard of the rest of the property. There was nothing which we needed that Penhaven didn’t have and it provided a wonderful base to explore Cornwall from. The beds in the property were the most comfortable of any property we’ve stayed in and the living spaces were open & brilliant for the whole family to be entertained. Contact with Neil, the owner, was superb as he got in touch to wish us a happy holiday and again at the end of the week to say he’d hoped we’d had a good time. We’ve never had this with any other property we’ve stayed in and it was a lovely touch.
