Superb, quiet location with very little through traffic where the only sound was from birdsong and sheep - lovely to watch the birds on the bird feeder from the conservatory. Very little light pollution so the stars were amazing. The house itself was very clean, spacious and extremely cosy with the log burner in the lounge - and the welcome cake and flowers were a real treat! This was a wonderful place to stay, very relaxing and we were extremely lucky with some glorious weather in which to enjoy all that the moors had to offer. We will definitely return

It has a beautiful walk to the lake and it's very peaceful. They welcome dogs but with restrictions, which is not made clear when booking. My dogs always sleep with us and they got very stressed and didn't settle because of this. I understand the reasons for this, and not being allowed on the furniture but it does impact on the restfulness of the holiday. I would highly recommend the cottage unless you have spoilt dogs.

Loved the history of the cottage and the attention to details concerning the craftsmanship. The feeling of a loving home was palpable. The cottage had gorgeous views and was perfect for relaxing, but was still close to lots of places to visit, with a good road system. The bonuses were the pond, and watching the various birds feeding just outside the conservatory. A larger TV would be my only advice.....(especially for people who's eyesight isn't perfect) for the size of the room. I wouldn't hesitate to return to this cottage.I would have been quite happy staying there forever.

The cottage is extremely well equipped, we even enjoyed the games and jigsaws, lots of kitchen equipment. The open living area is gorgeous, particularly as a holiday home, the master bedroom is spacious and there is room is the second bedroom for a cot. The only significant issue was that the radiators in the bedrooms badly needed bleeding as it was quite cold, which I took the liberty of sorting on the Monday, they were then pleasantly warm. We would happily visit again.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Chilvery Farm Cottage. We really do hope that you would consider staying again! I particularly would like to thank you for bleeding the radiators. Much appreciated. Property Owner

It is a perfect combination of a loved family home and a professional holiday cottage. It would be good if Sykes could provide more individual information on a cottage, once booked. The owners are incredibly helpful and would have told me anything I asked, I didn't think to ask about "No dogs upstairs" this was fine, but we could have known before hand. The kitchen was amazingly stocked and I brought things I didn't need to, that would have been helpful to know in advance too.

Description was entirely accurate. Accommodation and facilities were a high standard and comfortable. Note the comments about the main en-suite being shower and sink only, so lacking a WC was a minor negative, although the upstairs family bathroom has one, and there is a further one downstairs. The Cottage is around 1 mile down a single track lane and the nearest pub the Post Inn was ok, but my family didn't feel comfortable walking down this lane so we drove instead. But North and South Coast easily accessible and we had a great week, thanks!

  • "We love Chilvery Farm and the surrounding area which is why we have been there and The Linhay (just across the drive) quite a few times now."

The best things are the walk to the lake and the views from the back of Chilvery. The only small negatives are the very small patio garden at the back and the fact that our dog (Labrador) can and has, jumped over the wall into next door's drive which means I can't let him out there unless on a lead. This of course is nobody's fault so not a criticism. The only other thing is the small TV. It would be nice to have a smart TV so we could get other channels with On Demand and Catch Up and Netflix. The main bedroom is a good size and the bed is very comfy. The house is very warm and we have found that we haven't needed the heating on, especially when we had a log fire. This was in January/February! We will be going back soon.

Thank you for your kind comments we are pleased that you have continued to visit both of our properties and love the area. Our garden although fenced, it is not completely enclosed. We do offer Chromecast, which streams content to the TV from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play and Spotify, as well as the Chrome browser via the Google Cast extension. We are hoping this is something that you will make use of on your next visit, as we look forward to seeing you back soon. Property Owner

  • "First of all I would not have booked this cottage at all had I realised that there was no en suite toilet in the master bedroom."

I did point this out to Sykes and you did indeed change the details to show this on your website which is admirable, but it was too late for us. Because of this we did not invite other guests to share out cottage so ended up paying for a cottage for 2 that could have slept 4/5. The downstairs of the cottage is beautiful, well laid out and had pretty much everything we needed except champagne/prosecco glasses. So on arrival we pretty much went straight out again to Chagford to source a couple of glasses. None were to be had but luckily a lovely lady in Jaded Palates wine shop lent us glasses for the week which we duly returned. A holiday is a celebration in itself but on many occasions cottages are booked in celebration of a birthday/anniversary so I think Sykes should ensure that these glasses are provided. I have my own holiday let which is tiny but I still provide champagne glasses and the holiday cottage company which I use has now recommended that all cottages stock them for guests. Our other gripe was the master bed. It claims to be king size but we found it on the small side. The wooden bed frame creaked every time one of us turned over and the mattress/underbedding was lumpy. The room is huge so would easily take a super-king or zip and link. My first choice of cottage would always be one with a king size bed and assuming other people are the same, then it must be in owners' interests to provide as big a bed/s as posssible. You can see why my favourite Sykes cottage so far is Galena Cottage in Wardlow, Derbyshire.......3 super king rooms with a bathroom each (2 en suite). Cottage was also missing small knives which would have been useful along with some medium sized spoons and proper kitchen scissors. Previous guests had mentioned cobwebs and yes, they were still there but don't bother us. All in all this was a great cottage but could easily be made perfect with a few tweaks.

Thank you for your feedback. I have contacted the owner about your comments and was notified that there are champagne glasses in the property along with a range of knives, cutlery and utensils. The glasses are not with the usual glassware which is probably where the confusion was. However, the owner will measure the bed on the next maintenance visit. Cobwebs are unfortunately very common in older cottages, but these will take priority when cleaning. Property Owner

Great to have spare loo rolls, bin bags, cleaning equip, etc. The cake and milk for a cuppa waiting on arrival was much appreciated after a long drive. Very comfortable - including decent beds which you don’t always get in holiday rentals. Lots of character and lovely personal touches. Kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms were spotlessly clean. Good parking space. Beautiful pond area nearby. This was a special holiday to celebrate my birthday with family members. The cottage itself is lovely though situated right on a road which was normally quiet. But there were times when heavy farm/ army(?) vehicles came past in the middle of the night waking us with the noise and headlights. The living accommodation was spacious and comfortable. It was lovely to sit in the conservatory. The views were beautiful. The bedrooms were good. Please note the en-suite in the main bedroom has NO toilet. Shower only. And a tiny useless sink. The kitchen was fairly well equipped. But straightaway I saw mouse droppings in all the lower cupboards. This was disgusting. Especially in these times of Covid one might expect the cottage to be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom. Unacceptable. Helpful Holidays did not reply in any satisfactory way to my email on the subject. On a previous holiday, they did nothing when I complained about no heating. I had to work out myself that the fuse box was not switched on! We love Dartmoor but HH does not properly inspect the cottages so beware. Don’t expect any compensation or admissions of fault either. They used to be helpful but not any more. Disappointing.

Thank you so much for your feedback. It is always appreciated, even when something needs to be addressed. The issues you raised that are within our powers are are now being dealt with. Regarding the night-time farm vehicles, it is very rare that they have to move at night, but at harvest time it can be essential if they are to get the crops in and ensure food reaches our tables - which is of course especially important in these challenging times. The house is so nice I could live there forever and the access to the field and lake were a huge bonus, especially with a dog. I took him down there every morning for a run around before we went off for the day. The bedroom was great with lovely views across the fields and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was good with a lovely long bath so being quite short I could practically lie down in it! The kitchen was perfect, and I even sat in the conservatory for a few hours in spite of it being November! The pictures were lovely too, especially the horses on the landing. I love the idea of having the photobook depicting every stage of the transformation from barn to comfortable cottage, it made the place feel very sepcial seeing how it has been so lovingly renovated. On the slightly negative side there were a lot of cobwebs under furniture and in all the nooks and crannies in the living room and downstairs loo. I understand that it is an old cottage but I noticed that some previous occupants had said the same but the cobwebs are still there. The only other thing was that we did not get any logs which I have just read should have been included in the rent. We did manage to buy our own so it wasn't a problem but worth mentioning. We would definitely go back as the positives far outweigh the very small negatives.
