"We stay in cottage’s all the time and I must say this is one of the best we’ve stayed in."
Definitely worth staying. We’ll be back. Thank you.
-
"A lovely cottage with everything we needed in a perfect peaceful location."
The cottage was so cosy and lovely and exactly what we needed as a family of 5. The bird feeder gave the children such lovely birds to watch and we cannot wait to plan our next stay.
-
"The metal gate on the patio isnt small dog secure as our small terrier could get her head through & so I had to make a barricade."
Everything else was extremely good & we had a lovely week
-
"Charming property and wonderful grounds, with fabulous views over the fields and moors."
Easy access for exploring the moors and surrounding towns and villages. Everything one needs to enjoy a self catering holiday. Very comfortable and easy feel at home.
-
"Lovely cottage, comfortable in every way."
Fireplace, cosy and enough space. Love the way the farm is decorated with paintings, personal notes and care. Thanks for the delicious cake.
-
"Very clean and comfortable cottage."
We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it.
-
"The cottage was all we could have wished for."
It was rather like a friend going away and handing over their home to us for a week. Everything was there.
-
"Fantastic well equipped property with a real home from home feel."
Superb, quiet location with very little through traffic where the only sound was from birdsong and sheep - lovely to watch the birds on the bird feeder from the conservatory. Very little light pollution so the stars were amazing. The house itself was very clean, spacious and extremely cosy with the log burner in the lounge - and the welcome cake and flowers were a real treat! This was a wonderful place to stay, very relaxing and we were extremely lucky with some glorious weather in which to enjoy all that the moors had to offer. We will definitely return

"Chilvery is a lovely cottage and very comfortable."
It has a beautiful walk to the lake and it's very peaceful. They welcome dogs but with restrictions, which is not made clear when booking. My dogs always sleep with us and they got very stressed and didn't settle because of this. I understand the reasons for this, and not being allowed on the furniture but it does impact on the restfulness of the holiday. I would highly recommend the cottage unless you have spoilt dogs.
-
"A real home from home, every thing you need for a comfortable stay."
The kitchen is particularly well equipped. The cake and flowers were a lovely touch.
-
"An extremely comfortable cottage with everything we could want ."
Loved the history of the cottage and the attention to details concerning the craftsmanship. The feeling of a loving home was palpable. The cottage had gorgeous views and was perfect for relaxing, but was still close to lots of places to visit, with a good road system. The bonuses were the pond, and watching the various birds feeding just outside the conservatory. A larger TV would be my only advice.....(especially for people who's eyesight isn't perfect) for the size of the room. I wouldn't hesitate to return to this cottage.I would have been quite happy staying there forever.
-
"The location was superb for anyone who enjoys the countryside, walking and dark skies."
The cottage is extremely well equipped, we even enjoyed the games and jigsaws, lots of kitchen equipment. The open living area is gorgeous, particularly as a holiday home, the master bedroom is spacious and there is room is the second bedroom for a cot. The only significant issue was that the radiators in the bedrooms badly needed bleeding as it was quite cold, which I took the liberty of sorting on the Monday, they were then pleasantly warm. We would happily visit again.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Chilvery Farm Cottage. We really do hope that you would consider staying again! I particularly would like to thank you for bleeding the radiators. Much appreciated. Property Owner

"Chilvery is a beautiful, peaceful and well maintained cottage."
It is a perfect combination of a loved family home and a professional holiday cottage. It would be good if Sykes could provide more individual information on a cottage, once booked. The owners are incredibly helpful and would have told me anything I asked, I didn't think to ask about "No dogs upstairs" this was fine, but we could have known before hand. The kitchen was amazingly stocked and I brought things I didn't need to, that would have been helpful to know in advance too.
-
"It was a real home from home."
Cosy and well appointed…although could do with some more wine glasses! We loved our short time here and would definitely return.
-
"Our original choice cancelled."
But Chilvery didn’t disappoint. A charming characterful home ,comfortable and very clean. Very well equipped everything was thought of, even had a airer but no line . As described a small garden at the back with table & chairs with views, which we didn’t use really apart from feeding birds re weather. Our dog could jump over fence if left but we never do in countryside (Rusty Houdini). Walks we enjoyed down to the lake. Easy to find cottage and good access to other areas around. Cake on arrival was delicious. Thank you we will be back again to enjoy this home from home.
-
"Lovely cottage, had everything we needed."
Enjoyed the conservatory watching the birds feeding and the view. Neighbours were friendly
-
"It was a lovely homely cottage."
Plenty of space and really well equipped. Plenty of parking. Loved being able to walk the dog on the farmland. I would definitely stay again. Would recommend you getting a new Chromecast. It’s not working. I happened to bring mine and it worked fine. Suggest you replace.
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We will have a look a the Chromecast. Property Owner

"A charming, fully equipped, cottage spotlessly clean."
The lake nearby by was a joy. Everything so well maintained. Would highly recommend for walks and sites to visit.
-
"Beautiful converted barn , very clean and well equipped."
Nice touch of fresh flowers in cottage on arrival and delicious homemade cake. Would definitely stay again.
-
"The cottage was delightful, the pond and surroundings offered idyllic outdoor walks."
The welcoming gestures such as the logs and homemade cake added a nice touch, thank you. Would thoroughly recommend to all.
-
"Spacious but cosy, very well equipped , beautiful private meadow and pond nearby."
A wonderful cottage.
-
"Very clean."
Very well equipped. Lovely atmosphere and warm. Good location. Private Lake is delightful. Nice views from sun room. Garden/ sitting out area small. Shower would not suit a larger person. Would definitely stay here again.
-
"We really love Chilverey Farm Cottage and this was our 4th stay."
The cottage is warm and comfortable and very quiet. With the fire going it actually gets almost too hot, and this is February! The walk to the lake is always the highlight, especially with a dog and it's perfect to stretch the legs first thing in the morning before going out for the day. We tried to use Chromecast but couldn't work it out. Maybe some clearer instructions would be helpful. I had the app on my phone but it wasn't picking it up. We'll definitely be back!
-
"Very well equipped kitchen making Christmas Dinner easy to prepare."
Lovely cosy cottage and the wood burner was very welcome. Plenty of space for 5 adults and 2 dogs
-
"We really loved Chilvery Farm."
The location was lovely and quiet. Garden was enclosed and the little walk down to the lake was fantastic to take the dog first thing in the morning. The little extra touches to the place like box of tissues by the bed, liquid hand soap by the sinks, salt and pepper mills, tea towels etc made life so much easier. Cottage was lovely and cosy and warm. Will definitely return.

"A really nice atmosphere about this property."
Soon as you walk in the cleanliness is very noticeable and it feels homely. The kitchen is very well equipped indeed. The information booklet has lots of information in but probably need to re-type lots of written information as well. If you didn’t read the information pack you would not. Have known not to use your display china Which we didn’t use because we read the pack. Oh very nice touch with the brownies Yum Yum. Apart from the walk-in shower in the large bedroom which is very tight for a larger person I can see no way to improve this property as it is perfect.
-
"Absolutely perfect holiday cottage."
The photos didnt do it justice. We loved the decor all the art works and the cakes and flowers on arrival. The pond/lake made the holiday for our dog, we spent a few good walks down there and enjoyed the peace.
-
"We had a lovely week at Chilvery Farm Cottage."
Description was entirely accurate. Accommodation and facilities were a high standard and comfortable. Note the comments about the main en-suite being shower and sink only, so lacking a WC was a minor negative, although the upstairs family bathroom has one, and there is a further one downstairs. The Cottage is around 1 mile down a single track lane and the nearest pub the Post Inn was ok, but my family didn't feel comfortable walking down this lane so we drove instead. But North and South Coast easily accessible and we had a great week, thanks!
-
"If the garden for the Linhay was devided in two allowing chilvery a much bigger garden for people & dogs to sit out in the evening."
Sun apart from that we really enjoyed our stay thank you ☺️
-
"Lovey property enjoyed holiday and reading history of building and family."
Found shower in main bedroom very small so could have done with shower in bathroom we hope to have a return visit. P S thank you for the lovey cakes.
-
"We really loved the cottage."
It was warm. well equipped, clean, and homely. The countryside around there is stunning, the lake beautiful, and we loved the peacefulness of the area. The view from the main bedroom was great too. Our only minor criticisms were that the beds were a little too soft ( for us) especially the single room which was also a bit lumpy, and that the single armchair downstairs was also not too comfy. a third sofa would be better. but all in all, a wonderful place to stay.
-
"Wonderful cottage a d location."
-
"This is our second time at Chilvery Farm in the past 6 months and on this visit we came with my Sister and Brother-in-Law who stayed at The Linhay."
The cottage is a delight, very comfortable and extremely well equipped. Our only recommendation would be for a set of sharp knives but everything else is excellent. The walk down to the lake is so tranquil and especially suitable for my Sister's old Labrador Harry!
-
"The cottage was fantastic with everything you need."
Spacious but cosy living area and good size bedrooms. The beds were extremely comfortable. Would definitely go again. Richard and Susanna
-
"We love Chilvery Farm and the surrounding area which is why we have been there and The Linhay (just across the drive) quite a few times now."
The best things are the walk to the lake and the views from the back of Chilvery. The only small negatives are the very small patio garden at the back and the fact that our dog (Labrador) can and has, jumped over the wall into next door's drive which means I can't let him out there unless on a lead. This of course is nobody's fault so not a criticism. The only other thing is the small TV. It would be nice to have a smart TV so we could get other channels with On Demand and Catch Up and Netflix. The main bedroom is a good size and the bed is very comfy. The house is very warm and we have found that we haven't needed the heating on, especially when we had a log fire. This was in January/February! We will be going back soon.
Thank you for your kind comments we are pleased that you have continued to visit both of our properties and love the area. Our garden although fenced, it is not completely enclosed. We do offer Chromecast, which streams content to the TV from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play and Spotify, as well as the Chrome browser via the Google Cast extension. We are hoping this is something that you will make use of on your next visit, as we look forward to seeing you back soon. Property Owner

"Beautiful location, very peaceful."
From the moment we arrived it felt very cosy and welcoming. Very well equipped, and furnished . Would highly recommend this property . Personally we would also recommend Skye cottages descriptions are always accurate
-
"A lovely cottage, beautifully furnished, excellent location and the walk to the lake is truly special."
Please replace the bed in the main bedroom it creaks and is very uncomfortable!
Thank you for your feedback. The bed frame is being fixed to stop the creaking and make it more comfortable overall. Thanks again and we are delighted to hear of your positive comments. Property Owner

"First of all I would not have booked this cottage at all had I realised that there was no en suite toilet in the master bedroom."
I did point this out to Sykes and you did indeed change the details to show this on your website which is admirable, but it was too late for us. Because of this we did not invite other guests to share out cottage so ended up paying for a cottage for 2 that could have slept 4/5. The downstairs of the cottage is beautiful, well laid out and had pretty much everything we needed except champagne/prosecco glasses. So on arrival we pretty much went straight out again to Chagford to source a couple of glasses. None were to be had but luckily a lovely lady in Jaded Palates wine shop lent us glasses for the week which we duly returned. A holiday is a celebration in itself but on many occasions cottages are booked in celebration of a birthday/anniversary so I think Sykes should ensure that these glasses are provided. I have my own holiday let which is tiny but I still provide champagne glasses and the holiday cottage company which I use has now recommended that all cottages stock them for guests. Our other gripe was the master bed. It claims to be king size but we found it on the small side. The wooden bed frame creaked every time one of us turned over and the mattress/underbedding was lumpy. The room is huge so would easily take a super-king or zip and link. My first choice of cottage would always be one with a king size bed and assuming other people are the same, then it must be in owners' interests to provide as big a bed/s as posssible. You can see why my favourite Sykes cottage so far is Galena Cottage in Wardlow, Derbyshire.......3 super king rooms with a bathroom each (2 en suite). Cottage was also missing small knives which would have been useful along with some medium sized spoons and proper kitchen scissors. Previous guests had mentioned cobwebs and yes, they were still there but don't bother us. All in all this was a great cottage but could easily be made perfect with a few tweaks.
Thank you for your feedback. I have contacted the owner about your comments and was notified that there are champagne glasses in the property along with a range of knives, cutlery and utensils. The glasses are not with the usual glassware which is probably where the confusion was. However, the owner will measure the bed on the next maintenance visit. Cobwebs are unfortunately very common in older cottages, but these will take priority when cleaning. Property Owner

"We had expected a large garden"
-
"A very lovely cottage."
Very well equipped - everything we needed in the kitchen. Great to have spare loo rolls, bin bags, cleaning equip, etc. The cake and milk for a cuppa waiting on arrival was much appreciated after a long drive. Very comfortable - including decent beds which you don’t always get in holiday rentals. Lots of character and lovely personal touches. Kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms were spotlessly clean. Good parking space. Beautiful pond area nearby. Sittingroom wasn’t quite so clean as the rest of house - recommend you lift seat & back cushions on the sofas to clean properly and maybe air the rug more often outside. Great location. We book again.
Thank you for your feedback and kind words. We do take cleanliness seriously and welcome your comments. They have been passed on to our caretaker. Property Owner
-
"We have previously stayed at the Linhay so knew how great this would be for the dog."
The cottage was comfortable and we enjoyed the sun-room, particularly on the wet days. Would book this cottage again.
-
"There is a lot of recycling and various waste bins, which require different sizes of liner."
It would have been helpful for spares to have been provided for all bins.
-
"The cottage was beautiful and very well equipped."
The only thing I could criticise is the cleanliness. Some of the bedding and table cloths were clean but very stained and washed out. There were also a lot of dust and cobwebs around the whole of the cottage. Overall it is a lovely place and I would recommend it.
Thank you for your feedback on matters concerning cleanliness of Chilvery Farm Cottage. We take each comment seriously and will check whether more can be done regarding, dust, cobwebs and linen. We have replaced the tablecloth with a cover that is less prone to staining. Property Owner

"Very enjoyable stay."
Cottage generally maintained to high standard with lots of character - loved the woodburner and inglenook fireplace. Stayed during winter and very warm and snug. Conservatory with views of the moors, underfloor heating and view of courtyard bird feeder - where we saw nut hatches and woodpeckers - was a great addition. Lovely views from most windows, looking out onto the moors from the back of the house - felt very private. Only negative was the beds not the most comfortable. Kitchen had good quality pans etc and generally everything had been thought of. Nice quiet location with lots of beautiful places to visit and walks in the area. Would happily stay again.
-
"Very well presented cottage."
Everything worked very well - heating was good as we were staying at the end of September. Very good walk for the dog adjacent to the cottage. Would certainly consider staying again in the future.

"Well I did contact the ‘caretaker’ but she didn’t reply."
This was a special holiday to celebrate my birthday with family members. The cottage itself is lovely though situated right on a road which was normally quiet. But there were times when heavy farm/ army(?) vehicles came past in the middle of the night waking us with the noise and headlights. The living accommodation was spacious and comfortable. It was lovely to sit in the conservatory. The views were beautiful. The bedrooms were good. Please note the en-suite in the main bedroom has NO toilet. Shower only. And a tiny useless sink. The kitchen was fairly well equipped. But straightaway I saw mouse droppings in all the lower cupboards. This was disgusting. Especially in these times of Covid one might expect the cottage to be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom. Unacceptable. Helpful Holidays did not reply in any satisfactory way to my email on the subject. On a previous holiday, they did nothing when I complained about no heating. I had to work out myself that the fuse box was not switched on! We love Dartmoor but HH does not properly inspect the cottages so beware. Don’t expect any compensation or admissions of fault either. They used to be helpful but not any more. Disappointing.
Thank you so much for your feedback. It is always appreciated, even when something needs to be addressed. The issues you raised that are within our powers are are now being dealt with. Regarding the night-time farm vehicles, it is very rare that they have to move at night, but at harvest time it can be essential if they are to get the crops in and ensure food reaches our tables - which is of course especially important in these challenging times. "We had a fantastic week in this homely cottage."
The position was perfect to walk straight out onto Dartmoor. We loved staying in this family home and the attention to detail to inform guests all about the history of the barn was much appreciated. All the touches in wood from the owl to the handmade table were enjoyed by us all. The barn is very comfortable upstairs and down, with generous bedrooms and garden room with splendid views. And the walk to the pond every morning with our dog was so beautiful. We would highly recommend. Our only suggestions would be that the property would benefit from a selection of dvds and at least six large matching wine glasses (essential for any holiday!). We will be back!
-
"A lovely cottage, very homely and well equipped."
The added bonus of an idyllic lake to walk to through the adjacent field made a nice walk at the beginning and end of the day for us and the dog. Lots to do in the area a local pub would have been perfect!! We all really enjoyed ourselves and would return.
-
"We were a little wary about how we would feel going away so soon after the easing of lockdown."
I am a cleaner myself at Center Parcs so went ready to clean if necessary but really didn't need to. The barn was spotless, with plenty of sanitiser, handwash and antibac spray. We felt safe using it. Well done Cleaner and thank you! Ideal location for dog walking around the moors and enjoying a pub meal or two.
-
"This is a really lovely place to stay."
It is so remote, quiet and pretty, and while staying at the cottage you have access to an enchanting lakeside walk through a couple of fields. Our dogs loved it, and so did we. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the large table is perfect for family meals. The conservatory is a bonus, as it gives you an extra downstairs room to read a book. We had a different walk every day - you can reach the moor just a few minutes down the road.
-
"This was our second stay at Chilvery Farm Cottage and it was as good as we hoped."
The cottage is so lovely that I could honestly live there forever! The bedroom is a good size with a nice ensuite shower, the bath is lovely and long and the two other bedrooms look lovely although as there were only 2 of us we did not use them. The house is very warm and we slept with the window open. We had the log fire going most evenings and it was perfect. The views from upstairs are great with the moors in the distance and the setting is very quiet and peaceful. The piece de resistance is the walk down across the field and to the lake every morning with our dog, and sometimes at the end of the day. It is beautifully maintaned and so wonderful to be able to take the dog out straight after his breakfast before we planned our day. We will definitely be back. Thank you!
-
"Really lovely well equipped cottage."
,We will definitely return

"We had a lovely holiday at Chilvery Farm and it was perfect."
The house is so nice I could live there forever and the access to the field and lake were a huge bonus, especially with a dog. I took him down there every morning for a run around before we went off for the day. The bedroom was great with lovely views across the fields and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was good with a lovely long bath so being quite short I could practically lie down in it! The kitchen was perfect, and I even sat in the conservatory for a few hours in spite of it being November! The pictures were lovely too, especially the horses on the landing. I love the idea of having the photobook depicting every stage of the transformation from barn to comfortable cottage, it made the place feel very sepcial seeing how it has been so lovingly renovated. On the slightly negative side there were a lot of cobwebs under furniture and in all the nooks and crannies in the living room and downstairs loo. I understand that it is an old cottage but I noticed that some previous occupants had said the same but the cobwebs are still there. The only other thing was that we did not get any logs which I have just read should have been included in the rent. We did manage to buy our own so it wasn't a problem but worth mentioning. We would definitely go back as the positives far outweigh the very small negatives.
-
"The cottage was lovely and in an excellent location."
-
"We very much enjoyed our stay at Chilvery Farm."
We especially loved the walk down to the pond and the pond itself was a beautiful spot, it was very well kept. The house feels spacious and comfortable, with good facilities. The views are wonderful, it is a very peaceful area with lots of wildlife.
-
"A lovely comfortable cottage with lots of space and lovely views from the patio garden and bedrooms."
A nice touch with welcome gifts and the wildlife trail and lake is fabulous and great for dogs. Ideally located for East and West Devon, Dartmoor and Cornwall as well. Chagford village outstanding.
-
"Lovely cottage in wonderful location with magnificent views over the countryside with the bonus of the lovely walk down to the pond which we enjoyed most days."
The cottage could benefit from a ‘spring clean’ though - although appreciate the Cottage is old, there were cobwebs everywhere you looked. Also a clearer explanation of which part of the garden can be used would be helpful - in the book it tells you to go through the gate marked private but this clearly belongs to the Cottage opposite- the Linhay. The conservatory was such an asset - we spent most of our time in their just enjoying the views and watching the birds - utter peace and tranquility. Would love to return.
-
"Beautiful setting typical Dartmoor."
Beware narrow lanes but that's just Devon. Great location for touring Tors and easy access to beaches to being located only a few miles off the A30.
-
"Lovely cottage with particularly nice open plan kitchen-living area."
Kitchen very well equipped. Bathroom and shower room of modest proportions but adequate. Would certainly stay again.
-
"The cottage was generally clean and tidy, bedding and towels very good but there were cobwebs in every room, under the kitchen table and from ceilings and windows."
This did not affect our stay but a little more attention to the cleaning detail would have resulted in 10/10
-
"This was a real gem of a place."
Comfortable and relaxing, with everything you could need, right at your fingertips. We all had a really lovely weekend and could quite easily have stayed longer. Just over an hour to the Eden Project and virtually on the door step of the Dartmoor National Park, it was an idea base to travel from....but, could quite have easily just enjoyed this place without travelling anywhere else. Wish could have stayed longer.

"The week I spent at Chilvery Farm was fabulous."
Incredible cottage, grounds and location. The main room was great with just every comfort . Fantastic kitchen area with a wonderful farmhouse table and dresser. Living area has a wood burner in a large open fireplace, every evening was so relaxing. I spent periods of time in the conservatory, watched fantastic sunrises and a wonderful view across the valley. Extremely useful lobby for boots and coats. Beautiful carved bannister and other family touches in the cottage which makes the cottage a real home. There is only a very small patio garden attached to the house ,however, it is so pretty, sunny and private. Just a few steps out around a corner is a major ,pretty path down to a magnificent, large field with wonderful oak trees and pond, beautifully kept . I loved this walk every morning and evening,so peaceful and even places to sit , great for picnics. A wonderful cottage for dogs and walking gear as useful lobby ,conservatory and patio area. Parking is on drive outside the cottage off the road,I can recommend backing into the drive . Chilvery Farm is so peaceful, great location for accessing Dartmoor, where I walked most days. There isn't a shop or a pub within walking distance, however, Northmore Arms at Wonsom is 5 mins drive and a truly unspoilt ,magnificent old cider house, just loved this place with friendly residents, dog friendly. Shops at Chagford again very friendly and most places accepting of dogs. Wonderful Post Office and shop at South Zeal. I would love to return to this cottage and location.

"Lovely well equiped cottage."
Comfortable and homely. Good location for many things to see and do in Devon.
-
"Lovely cottage with a well equipped kitchen."
All the rooms were spacious yet cozy. The outside courtyard was perfect for breakfast and birdwatching. A welcoming place to come back to after a day on the stunning north coast and walking on the moors. Lots of interesting villages nearby. unfortunately no pubs or shop within walking distance. Not a lot of outside space for a larger dog but would work well for a smaller dog. We really enjoyed our holiday. Thankyou.:)
