  • "We have given top ratings in our review even though we had two "floods" due to a blocked drain which had obviously been building up for some time."

The first flood we dealt with even though we couldn't work out the reason but the second time we called Paul ad he came over very quickly. We did have to use all towels to mop up and didn't leave the house until Paul came. It did mean a lot later start to our last day of our holiday but that couldn't be helped. Aside from this we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and certainly exercised our legs on the coastal walks to Hope Cove and Bantham!

Paul and I were so sorry this happened while you were there. Thank you for being so understanding and it was good to hear that Paul Lane came out so quickly to get it sorted. So pleased you enjoyed your stay despite this unfortunate event. Property Owner

  • "Overall the property was great."

All of the bedrooms are of a great size with brilliant views over the countryside to the sea. The furnishings are tasteful and the chairs and sofas all lovely and comfortable. The snug is a bonus which the kids appreciated as they could watch their programmes without disturbing the adults. If a door could be fitted to keep the noise of the very large TV contained that would be even better. The well equipped kitchen was appreciated as so often a utensil is missing or of poor quality, but not at Two Hoots. As a minor niggle it would be good to know exactly is provided in terms of dishwasher tablets , washing up liquid, salt pepper etc. We ordered cooking oil in our holiday delivery but this was not needed and conversely there was no washing up liquid provided and we assumed there would be based on other holiday rentals we have used over the years.

So glad you enjoyed your stay. When we have been to stay at Two Hoots I usually leave loads of dishwasher tablets,a bottle of washing up liquid, replacement salt and pepper but once they are gone I won’t be able to replace them until we next stay. Sorry for any inconvenience. Kind regards Ally & Paul Property Owner

If the sun shines, the balcony is the perfect place for a gin and tonic with ice from the excellent fridge.

Paul also loves enjoying a gin and tonic on the balcony. Property Owner

  • "We all loved our stay at Two Hoots!"

We have visited Thurlestone every year for the last 13 years and have stayed in several of the holiday cottages, but this one is the best! It's a little further out, but the pub is still walkable for sure, and the parking was a bonus. The house was spotless and well appointed. Very comfortable beds, and lovely bedlinen. Great showers. Plenty of fridge & freezer space. We made the most of the fab views with drinks on the balcony when the sun was shining, and we home cooked several times. It was a treat to watch the England match on the big screen in the snug. The only issue was the bin situation, which has been mentioned before. The lovely neighbour came round (again!) to explain that we didn't need to put the bins out. I made a note in the house handbook to hopefully spare him future visits. We have already booked again for next year. Thank you so much for a great stay!

So pleased you enjoyed your stay. We have changed the information about the bins on the email you get sent before you arrive explaining more about it. We changed to a private company as we were having problems with the council collections and some visitors didn’t put the bins out which caused lots of problems as they only collect every 2wks. Paul and I try our best to to cater for everything and delighted you have booked again for next year. Ally Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful stay at two hoots for the first time."

Beautiful home, well equipped and organised with everything you could need. A few things we wanted to mention for future customers/owners attention (where possible). There were a few kitchen items which are ready for replacement which we left a note of in the maintenance book (great idea to keep on top of things!) and the frying pans are definitely ready to be replaced, our attempts to make a fried egg and actually get it out of the pan again were comical at best. The narrow lanes to and from the property were definitely a challenge as the locals are super confident and you don’t see them until they are right upon you which is scary when your not used to those single vehicle lanes, especially when you don’t know where your going initially. The cleaning was adequate although could do with more care and attention particularly on furniture (dog hair) and the outdoor glass, cobwebs in corners, bird poop etc. The beds were large and comfortable. The bin collection instructions were confusing, everything in one bin outside but 3 separate bins within property, suggesting recycling initially. We are still unclear if the bags are sorted or not once collected, maybe could do with more clarity around this for future guests. The neighbour kindly informed that they collect the bin on a Friday and it does NOT need to be put on the street, however the info email says bin collections are Tuesdays so again confusing. The birds were noisy and leave lots of mess so we appreciate that it is sometimes out of your control but we got used to the noise by a few days in. The plumbing was noisy, particularly in the bathrooms upstairs and can be heard from main living space downstairs so we knew who was up and when based on their bathroom movements. The activities are far apart and places to visit are a decent drive away depending on what you want to do but we had a lovely Sunday lunch in the village inn which we walked to although hilly, it was lovely and people were friendly. The house was equipped with games, books, jigsaws as well as access to tv streaming but unable to watch movies over 15etc until 8pm when the passcode is not required. We had 3 teenagers with us and they made good use of the snug to watch tv but it was a struggle when both tv’s were in use as they interrupted each other and we were constantly telling each other to turn down or having to turn up to hear past the other. It is not possible, but another door between snug and living space would be good to manage the sound better. Overall we had a lovely stay and none of the above would prevent us from booking again in the future. Beautiful views and beautiful house. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Thank you for your feedback and you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for letting us know about the kitchen items that needed replacing which we have ordered. Living by the coast has its positives and negatives one of these being the seagulls but in our view the positive s outweigh the negatives. Property Owner

  • "Absolutely fabulous house thank you!"

So comfortable and well equipped. This is not a criticism at all but if any future guests enquire as to whether the garden is dog proof it isn’t! I know you don’t make that claim but if someone asks our two small(ish) dogs escaped through the hedge in seconds! Also it would be helpful to be told somewhere that ALL the rubbish goes out in the blue bin and there’s no recycling. Many thanks, we loved the house.

So glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry to hear your dogs got out we also have 2 small dogs but they have never got out so thank you for letting us know so if anyone were to ask. The rubbish collection was our only choice as the local council collection isn’t great and we had lots of guests who didn’t put the bins out which caused big problems as they only collect every 2wks. We thought the notice on the bin cupboard provided by the the bin company explained it all but we will recheck when we are next down. Thank you for your feedback. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our first visit to Two Hoots."

The owners have clearly invested a lot of care into proving all the detail needed for a family stay. We fully appreciated the space in the lounge dining area. Bedrooms were also spacious. We did have concern with the noise from plumbing and heating systems in one upstairs room at night. But this is part of the chalet house style. Having made several calls to Sykes prior to the date of our holiday, to ensure stair gates were provided and fitted, to protect our young family members, it was very disturbing to arrive with no gates in place. Our aim was to protect our holiday from stressful calls. The caretaker came on Sunday and fitted the gates. The caretaker told me they had received no contact from Sykes requesting the stairgates. We did attempt to put them up ourselves but they were not easy to fit. Without them helping us we would have had to return home. There is a very steep staircase from the lounge down to the snug area. This is highly dangerous for very young children. It would be great if the Owners could install a permanent gate with childproof lock to avoid a serious accident. We would be happy to return if a gate is in place.

So sorry that Sykes didn’t pass on your message to our care takers. We have since you stayed have some handmade stairs made which are much easier to put on and take off with secure locks. Regards Ally & Paul Property Owner

  • "Two Hoots is a lovely property and was just as shown in the listing."

It suited our party of 7 very well and would have been even better if we could have used the outdoor seating areas more often (high winds and persistent rain apart from one day !! ). Still very relaxing. A couple of small points :- one bedroom on the top floor was quite dusty. The previous occupiers had not washed some of the pots & pans adequately. We couldn't find the cutlery on the first night (we were very tired) but did find it the next morning ! Cleverly concealed in one of the bigger cupboards :-) ... maybe a small note in the welcome book for dozy people like us would be helpful ! Overall a very enjoyable week, thank you !

We don’t have dogs ourselves but understand it’s a pet friendly property, but yet again the number of dog hairs still remaining on the furniture and lounge carpet from the previous guests pets was disappointing. It wouldn’t put us of returning but would prefer a doh hair free environment for our stay.

So sorry to hear this we stayed the week before and my husband used a lint roller on the sofas and they get hoovered by the cleaners so we definitely try our best. We are a dog friendly house. Regards Ally & Paul Property Owner

  • "A very nice property which we enjoyed staying at BUT."

.. Due to unforeseen circumstances (our dog snapped his ACL) we ended up having to take 3 dogs instead of 2. We were contacted after a couple of days by Sykes to ask for payment for the 3rd dog (which is only right) However the only way they could discover this was if they were monitoring the CCTV. (video and sound?) The thought of this spoiled the holiday for all of us as we didn't like the idea of being spied on. For this reason alone, we would not return.

All cameras are turned off when the house is occupied. Sometimes on a Friday we check the doorbell camera to make sure the cleaners have been and gone and that the rubbish has been collected. As failed rubbish collections had caused issues for guests in the past. Sorry you feel you were being spied on as that is not the case. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous property, very well appointed and fitted out."

Poor cleanliness due to superficial cleaning only which had followed a stay where 2 dogs had stayed in the week before . Hair on all soft furnishings including bedrooms. Outside balcony had a lot of hair in corners and crevices We did contact you following an allergic reaction to dog hair for one of the party. Following this additional cleaning was provided. Disappointing that given you knew pets had begun present a higher level of cleaning had not been provided. We spent time cleaning the property ourselves only to discover the vacuum cleaners were totally bunged up! That was another job that we did in our holiday time. The other issue we had was a stair gate not fitted properly again resolved but how did the person who fitted it not know that it was not connected properly? We did not let this spoil our holiday but it could all have been avoided. Puzzled as to why you charge extra for pets then not deep clean the property?? Or charge the owners fir leaving the mess behind ?? My daughter has never had a reaction to pet hair before she can have a reaction to dust, so luckily had creams with her and antihistamines otherwise we would’ve had to seek to medical help. Photographs of her skin were sent to you to show the severe reaction as you will have seen that would’ve been very uncomfortable for her. Happy to speak to you about our experience.

We are so sorry for your experience. We have spoken to our property manager. They have advised that they immediately visited on Saturday to adjust the stair gate, and at that point there was no mention of dog hair. When you messaged on Sunday, they came out on Monday and hoovered, polished and cleaned all the main areas. You then texted to say how pleased you were with their prompt and considerate response. They clearly did everything they could to help you enjoy your holiday. We welcome pets and do try our very best to clean up after them, Property Owner

We also loved the location being within 5 min drive of Batham, Thurlestone and South Milton beaches. The balcony of the kitchen and its view is fabulous. To be more versatile for families, it would work even better if the downstairs double bedroom was a zip link bed as this would create option of 2 twin rooms when needed. This didn’t detract from holiday though, and would be happy to return!

So glad you enjoyed your stay at Two Hoots . We feel the views are very special and love to hear they have also been enjoyed by others. Hope you will visit again soon. Property Owner

We’ll definitely be booking to go back. The one criticism we all had was the cameras at the property, 2 at the front and one at the back, if this becomes common, i’d like to see these being mentioned in the property descriptions, no one likes to feel like they are being watched. I’d still give the property 10 out of 10 though. Sykes emails and service was excellent, all ran smoothly.

Thank you so much for letting us know that you enjoyed your stay at Two Hoots.
