  • "Loved the cottage and front garden."

Rear garden is a little tricky to access from back door halfway up stairs. Sofa and chair are ok for a short period, but do become uncomfortable if spending a few hours on them. Overall we were very pleased with it.

  • "Lovely cottage that has been tastefully updated and very comfortable to stay in."

Beautiful front garden that sits over the lake and a lovely place to sit and have a few drinks. There’s a back garden that’s secluded accessible by a small door (watch your head - I still have the bumps!) which is ideal for your morning coffee. The spiral staircase is fine but if you have any mobility issues, you may want to take particular care. Property was spotlessly clean upon arrival and a few essentials left for us were gratefully received. Location is fine and there’s a few shops nearby and a pretty decent pub stumbling distance away. Plymouth itself with all that offers is only a 20 minute drive away. Able to park car right next to property and everyone we bumped into was very friendly. Overall, a lovely place to stay. Just wish we had better weather :(

  • "The cottage is situated in a quiet suburb of Hooe."

On arrival it soon bacome obvious that there wasn't a wardrobe to hang our clothes nor chest of drawers. On closer inspection the cupboard featured in one of the photos has removable shelves which then allowed my partner to hang her dresses and my shirts, we lived out of our suitcases for all our other clothing. The settee is a bed-settee and not necessarily designed for comfort. The cottage is tidy with all the mod-cons as you would expect but most flat surfaces are covered in plastic flowery things, way too many when space is at a premium in a small cottage. There's a disticnct smell of damp in the confinded areas, but with DIY air vents situated around the place to help air circulation. The stairs are akin to a ladder although I managed OK (67 years old). The gardens, front and rear are fabulous and well maintained. The Royal Oak down the street is a bit of a dive, can't say anything regarding food as we left after one drink. There are much better pubs for food and drink a modest walk away. We took a ferry from Mount Batten overf to Plymouth which was great, and also discovered Mount Edgcombe on another great day out. A tad expensive when compared to similar in Port Issac but ok as a base to work from.

So sad to read your review, especially given all the great reviews we have received over the last couple of years. Most people have loved that we have dressed our cottage so it feels like a home as apposed to a typical bare holiday let. There is a wardrobe in the bedroom that can either be used as hanging space or shelving, there are also baskets under the bed, which we generally use as drawers for folded clothes, 2 bed side cabinets with drawers in them as well as a suitcase stand if need be. It is a grade İİ listed stone cottage, so full of character, the vents help the cottage breath and were put in when the cottage was renovated, as they weren’t built in those days to have efficient gas central heating to keep them warm, cosy and air tight. We do explain in the description that the stairs are steep and winding and not suitable for anyone with mobility issues and there is a photo of them. I’m sorry if you hadn’t noticed those details. Pleased to hear that you found our front and back gardens fabulous, the view is amazing and we love that it is ever changing with the weather and tide. Clover is in a an ideal location to explore the area on foot, being close to many other pubs that offer great food, other than the local and on the South West Coast Path and with the Mount Batten ferry only a stroll away which takes you straight over into Plymouth. You didn’t comment on the bed, so hoping that means you agreed with everyone else’s thoughts on how comfy it is, we get lots of questions about the mattress / bedding used so guests can replicate its comfort at home Michaela Property Owner

The front garden was beautiful and would be perfect in warmer weather. Property is full character and well equipped. We loved being able to walk from the cottage to the south coastal path and explore the nearby area. Jenni cliffe cafe and beach nearby, bovisand , mount batten and many more. We enjoyed meals at Bovingdon Arms and the Clovellly Inn at Turnchapel. Both recommended. We loved our mini break and would recommend to others.

Thank you for your lovely review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Clover, as do we when we have time to stay there ourselves. • "We had a lovely stay at Clover Cottage, great views and a special bonus of 2 gardens that were enclosed for our little dog."

I agree the stairs are steep but we managed (both in our 60’s). The settee and chair could have been more comfortable, but the bed was a delight. Great kitchen with everything you could need. Easy parking and a pub around the corner. We travelled to Wembury Beach, Bigbury-on-sea, Looe, and Bovisand Beach with its great little cafe on the cliff top. Walking around the area is mostly on the south west coast path and as such is not level (for less able people). Overall, we’d love to come back again!

Loved watching the tide changes and enjoyed the gardens. The bedroom floor slopes quite a bit - so need to take care when stepping out of bed on the door side :). Wood and kindling were supplied for wood burner, which we loved and added to the cosiness. The kitchen is very well stocked with plates, crockery etc which does not leave any room for storage. As this cottage is rented for 2 people, the amount of kitchen stuff could be reduced to give some storage space. This is just a tip, we had a great time here and hope to return some day!

The cottage was extremely well-equipped with every facility one could hope for. It should be noted that the spiral stairs are quite steep and there is no upstairs bathroom so toilet visits in the night need to be done with care.

Well equipped and well maintained property. However, limited kitchen storage for any groceries you may take. It would have been useful to have a list of local supermarkets e.g. there is a local shopping centre called Broadway which we happened upon. Easy to access the ferry to cross to the Hoe, Barbican and Plymouth city. This is the first cottage we have stayed in (and we have stayed in a lot) where they do not offer recycling and was advised to dispose of this ourselves. Also advised that we may be charged for more than one bag of rubbish!

Great location with plenty of pubs and good restaurants within walking distance. Everything about this quaint cottage was extremely well equipped and presented, very comfortable and immaculately clean! As young at heart couple, unfortunately our older creaky bones found the small spiral staircase a tad challenging in the mornings. We also chose not to use the back garden for this reason too, opting to spend our time in the front garden instead, which had the most amazing views anyway! All in all, a very enjoyable stay and we would definitely recommend!

We are really pleased you had an enjoyable stay in our holiday cottage despite finding the stairs a bit of a challenge in the mornings. It is a very old Grade II listed cottage with steep winding stairs and we do have a warning on the cottage details that they aren't suitable for anyone with mobility issues, apologies if you missed that, we will speak to Sykes to see if we can make the warning any more prominent. Now that the renovation works to our neighbouring cottage have been completed, all our guests are loving the front garden and the amazing views, not to mention the newly installed pontoon with direct access onto the lake (when the tide is in) Thank you. Fixtures and fittings done to a high standard, modern yet in keeping with a 300yr old cottage. Garden is a wonderful place to sit and watch the changing tide. House next door is being renovated but this seems to be on a low key basis, only ever saw the same 2 older guys in and out, both very pleasant - didn't find this intrusive in any way. • "Unfortunately we were not told about any building works near the cottage when we booked so when we arrived we were shocked to see a major build with scaffolding to the left of the house."

The garden to other side of the cottage was also being used for the builder's portaloo and portakabin which which when in use the door overlooked our garden. The workmen started at 7.30am and started the cement mixer and were constantly wheelbarrowing buiding materials pass the cottage. We did call Sykes as we wanted to leave that morning but were told if we did we would not qualify for a refund so after spending most of Monday speaking to Sykes they confirmed the owner would either reduce the weekly charge by 20% (not an option) or refund the nights we did not stay, we ageed to the latter so we could just get out of this situation. We did finally manage to get a refund for the 3 nights we did not stay (although it was due to Sykes we had to stay and pay for an extra night!) but the owner refused to consider this. In retrospect we should have asked for a full refund! The photos on the website are not a true reflection of the area at the moment so these photos and information need to be updated. If we had been told of the excessive build we would not have chosen this cottage. The cleanliness was also an issue, chip in oven, bbq dirty, t-shirt found behind microwave (?) and worse was the filthy smelly rugs in the sitting room. The back garden was also overgrown as noted in a preious review July 2021. Sykes do not check the cottages as far I understand they rely on the owner and paying guests to update them which totally unacceptable. You will most certainly be aware of the problems as noted above as it took nearly all week to speak with your company to get any conclusion when it should have been a week or relaxation.

We are so sorry that our next door neighbours had the portacabin delivered into another garden on the Friday of your arrival, we weren’t aware of this. It has now been screened off and all future guests are being made aware of the renovation works. Regarding the renovations next door, this has been ongoing all year, mostly internal and in the main hasn’t impacted a stay at the cottage, which you can see from all the other reviews on Sykes website and that is certainly our intentions for any future bookings. Unfortunately, your negotiations, which we felt were handled really well by Sykes, were very protracted, with you first agreeing a discount for the whole stay to then wanting more money and then even more, threatening further action if you didn’t receive a refund. I have always found Sykes customer service impeccable especially given the number of guests / owners they have to co-ordinate with on a daily basis. Property Owner

It might not work for 6ft plus people as it truly has low ceilings but I guess that’s part of its charm. A good local pub and also dog walks and places to eat further afield.

So pleased you had a lovely stay at Clover. My husband is 6ft 2" and finds the ceilings remarkably high given the age of the property, he only has to mind his head when he goes through some of the doors, which at that height he is very used to anyhow. The front yard was excellent to enjoy breakfast in and the bed was one of the most comfortable we’ve ever experienced. The cottage interior was very clean and well laid out. The welcome card, cookies and bubbles are such a lovely touch. Only slight negative about the property is the back lawn was a overgrown and bin at back still had rubbish from previous guests stay. Location is great, beautiful setting. A few minor suggestions. The sitting room could do with some comfy chairs to flop into by the fire. The bathroom would benefit from a proper shower. The mixer is hard to use and the water temperature is very high. Booking Friday to Friday is unusual. The rubbish arrangements were unsatisfactory. We felt we needed a bin outside. We had to leave our rubbish in the kitchen bin for the whole week which was not hygienic and smelly. There were instructions to take recycling to the nearest recycling point but it would have been useful to know where this was. We would certainly recommend the cottage. One of the best we have used over the years.

'Really pleased you had a lovely time and that Clover was one of the best holiday homes you have stayed in. The lounge is very cosy but the sofa is on the hard side, we have had a new handmade sofa on order for a few months now (Covid delays) but it is finally due to arrive the week before Christmas. Regarding the shower, we haven’t had any problems ourselves so will need to get this checked out, although you do need to set the temperature before changing it over to the shower head, but it is powerful and there is a plentiful on demand supply of hot water for either a bath or shower. We understand the rubbish arrangements weren’t ideal so have ordered an additional overflow bin which we will locate in the back garden. Thank you for the feedback, we hope to tempt you back again soon, you would then be able to also enjoy the improvements we have made to the waterside garden too!' Property Owner
