  • "The house and location was ideal for our group."

The house was clean and tidy. Only issues were with the two bathrooms shared by the 3 bedrooms. The one with the shower had a faulty lock which came apart, the one with the bath had no lock on it. Apart from this we had a very enjoyable break

  • "A lovely big house, plenty of room for all of us (5 adults, 4 children)."

Beds are comfortable, lots of space for clothes. Kitchen has a nice pantry to store your food and has a small additional fridge which we used for drinks. Garden is great, the kids played football and games everyday outside. Location is perfect, beach is 15min away! WiFi is very patchy, but the owners do warn you of that! The farm shop at the end of the road is amazing, worth a visit!

  • "We had a really lovely stay at Culverfield."

We found it had plenty of space for our party, was reasonably well-equipped and is in a beautiful location. It was really good value for money but, as we expected, that meant some of the decor and furniture isn't super up to date. But it served us really well for a group holiday over New Year. Our main complaint would be that the fridge is a both a both a bit small for a big group and didn't seem to be working very well. We had to really cram all or food in there and it wasn't really being kept cold. Again this was OK since we were only on a short break over winter but probably need to be looked at before the spring. Thanks for a lovely stay. We would definitely come back to Culverfield.

Thank you for your feedback. I will take a look at the fridge/freezer as it was purchased new last year. I am glad you had a lovely stay and look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

We all had a great time, the house was well equipped, comfortable and flexible for a big group. The large garden was great for the children to run off steam. The one minor issue we had was dealt with promptly by the owner. Getting lucky with the weather helped !

  • "We are an extended family of 8."

Overall we had a lovely time at the house. The views from the front rooms were great. And the location was good. The house is well set up for two families with 2 beds/2 baths on one side of the house and 3 beds/2 baths on the other. The kitchen is well stocked with pans and serving dishes, crockery and utensils etc. The house is well maintained inside. The house was clean. However, some of the furniture needs to be replaced and upgraded. Two of the mattresses were particularly soft and provided no support. There was a need for a chair in some of the bedrooms. The sofas in the smaller living room are no longer supportive and you sink back into them and cannot get up. They are also oversized for the space. Also there are no tables (side or coffee) in the other living room. Both TVs need to be replaced soon as both have shadows or color tuning issues. One shower had very poor water pressure - everyone ended up using the other. The sink in the shower room is too small - the cabinet sticks out too far and you cannot brush your teeth. There is nowhere to hang towels to dry, either in the bathroom or bedroom. Outside, the house could do with sprucing up and the garden furniture improved. The flower beds and grass need attention. (There is work being done on the adjacent outbuilding but this didn't bother us at all.) We all agreed, with a few upgrades, and maybe a rethink of the use of a room or two, this could be a truly wonderful house. But, as is, we would not rent again, mainly due to the sofas and beds.

Many thanks for the feedback. I have new mattresses on order for next season and I will take a look at the TV's and the sofas in the smaller living room. I am glad you had a good time overall. Property Owner

Pauline was so lovely and we knew she was at the end of the phone should anything go wrong and the whole week was amazing. My sister was with us frim Australia and she had a wonderful time, we made some fantastic memories, so thank you Pauline for that. Would highly recommend that you book this house if you have a special event or a large family holiday as the place is ideal.

Very tasteful and well equipped house. Pauline very welcoming, nothing too much trouble and very generous with facilities. Not a criticism at all but just in case Pauline wasn’t aware the oven is not working properly it’s not heating up properly wasn’t an issue for us as didn’t do proper cooking much. As a family of 10 we really had real quality family time with lots of space. Would definitely re-book!

Our dog loved racing around the garden and paddock. The Tytherleigh Arms is an amazing dining experience and the little Farm Shop is a great discovery. Our only recommendation would be a second fridge, especially for bottles and cans. There’s no local pub, but the garden is perfect for sitting in with a cool glass of wine or beer.

Ideal for a large family group of 10. Plenty of parking, fields and large garden big enough for a game of cricket, rounders with the kids and for the dogs to run around. Set in beautiful countryside. Close to Chard and Axminster with Lyme Regis about 9 miles away. Lovely farmhouse, full of character and plenty of room. Could do with more water pressure for the shower in the annex, other then that it was perfect for us- hopefully we’ll be back one day. Thank you Pauline!

We really enjoyed our stay at Culverfield. The views from the house are beautiful and the grounds are great for children to play in. The house was very comfortable and well-equipped, with plenty of space, and the location suited us very well. We particularly liked visiting Lyme Regis, riding on the open top of the Colyton - Seaton tram and also visiting the Sub-Tropical Gardens at Abbotsbury. We would happily stay there again.

The house has everything you need. The kids loved playing hide and seek in all the rooms and we loved the log burner in the evenings. The beds were really comfy and we slept well. The only negative to mention was the frustration of not being able to open any windows at the front of the house due to the cluster flies that would then come in. But I believe they are looking for hibernation at the time we stayed so other times of year might be okay. There are 2 bedrooms each with ensuite accessible from one set of stairs and 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms accessible from the other stairs. It worked perfectly for us and we had a great holiday. Its a lovely quiet location and a brilliant large garden for the kids to run about.

  • "Culverfield is quite a quirky property - original house plus large extension with 2 kitchens / 2 dining rooms and 2 lounges."

This meant the 5 children aged between 7-13 had a great time their own wing BUT there is no access between bedrooms on first floor. The outdoor grassed area is vast and was greatly enjoyed by the children. The mention of ‘horses’ in the property description needs to be deleted as 2 young girls were disappointed that the stables were empty! The friendly owner / caretaker gave us lots of tips for where to go / what to see. The farm shop, 3 minutes walk away was very handy / the Tesco’s in Axminster was well stocked. 2 negatives - the local historic George Inn has closed and the local lanes are hazardous for walkers and joggers - fast traffic / no footpaths.

Plenty of outdoor space for our little one to run around in, and some bonus horses too. Owner really helpful and friendly. So much room inside. Really cosy, good electric showers and beautiful bath. Great view from the house; you can technically see the sea, but the Ax valley is the real show here. WiFi not really strong enough, but actual internet connection and 4g great are fine. There’s a little cottage a few doors down selling local honey and it’s delicious. We didn’t try the local pub, the local shop is well stocked but expensive and has no booze :-(. Check out the antiques place, huge variety and reasonable prices.

About the location

TYTHERLEIGH

Chardstock 1 mile; Axminster 4.5 miles; Chard 3 miles; Lyme Regis 8.5 miles.

Tytherleigh is a small village in Devon, on the Fosse Way Roman Road, very close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset, which it actually belonged to until the late 1800s. The village name was first recorded in the mid-12th century and is derived from an Old English phrase meaning ‘thin’ or ‘tender woodland’. Tytherleigh is now an excellent base for walkers, cyclists and horse riders exploring the West Country, with an excellent, dog-friendly pub serving delicious food. It is a short walk from a village shop and pub in Chardstock, and an easy drive to the popular towns of Axminster and Chard. Each have their own museum and Heritage Centres, interesting shops and wonderful inns serving good food and scrumptious local cider. If you ever doubted the beauty and majesty of this wonderful corner of England, please note that The Blackdown Hills, East Devon, and Dorset AONBs are all just stone’s throw away! You can be sure of picturesque picnic spots and mesmerising country vistas in every direction you look. The impressive Jurassic Coast is also a short drive away to the south, where you can scour the shoreline for fossils at Lyme Regis. An excellent base for friends and families holidaying in Devon.
