  • "On the whole we had a wonderful stay at The Stables."

The accommodation was great, the location amazing, and so we would recommend to friend, with a couple of reservations. The first issue for us was that whilst there was underfloor heating, there was absolutely no ability for us to control this ourselves and the heat was extremely patchy. This is a first for us in any property we have ever stayed in. The weather was initially snow and ice and then the temperature jumped up over 10 degrees on the 3rd day. Whilst we completely accept that no one controls the weather, to not be able to adjust the heating according to our needs was extremely frustrating. We did phone the maintenance number a few times to ask them to adjust things but this was not ideal and certainly never communicated that we couldn't regulate the temperature of the property ourselves. Clearly in the summer this is unlikely to be an issue but in the winter we all felt it was important and certainly impacted our comfort. The facilities chap who did come to the property and bought extra radiators was prompt and helpful. Our second main point is that despite steep stone steps down to the front door and no handrail for support, there is no grit or salt box available to be able to minimise the slip hazard. We would have thought that particularly bearing in mind the logistics of entering the property and the snow and ice something would have been done about it. It was so dangerous. Again we contacted the maintenance team to ask for some salt or grit and someone did come but this was only after we had requested it. A salt box would be so easy to provide and would allow guests to ensure their own safety in such weather. Other more minor points which we all felt would have been helpful were; 1. A wall mirror in the twin bedroom (plenty of wall space for hanging one) 2. A second large frying pan. The property accommodates 8 people and one small pan is not sufficient. 3. Bigger bath towels, ones provided were very small. 4. Proper chairs rather than benches at the dining table. We should have picked up on this when we booked but benches are so uncomfortable for any period of time and we did spend a long time sitting at the table playing games. All points mentioned could be rectified with minimal cost impact. I would be happy to discuss any of our feedback further.

Thank you for the feedback we are pleased you had a wonderful stay and that you would recommend it. We always look into ways to improve our guests experience and appreciate your comments, We now have a handrail fitted next to the outside steps. The heating is on timers and in zones, being newly converted the property is very well insulated. We can turn this up or down if requested but it is a warm property especially being south and west facing. Unfortunately we have locked the system as we have had issues in the past with guests altering the temperatures and timers which means we have to carry out a manual reset, The towels and bedding are all provided by Lyme Bay holidays. We have put up in a mirror in bed 4 and placed an additional large frying pan in the property. We hope you can come and stay with us again. Property Owner

  • "This barn conversion was lovely."

So much space. As soon as you walk through the door we loved it. It could do with some towel holders near the wash basins. The drive could do with some attention. We had a 4x4 which was fine. Our friends had a Mercedes sport which is low, they had to leave it at the top of the drive after getting stuck at the bottom. The finish is not very good. Too much gravel in places. Just a minor point. I know waterproof mattress protectors are needed, but they are very uncomfortable to sleep on. We went and bought a topper for the bed which improved sleeping mo end. We really enjoyed our stay apart from the above.

Thank you for the great review we are pleased you loved the property as much as we do. Thanks for the feedback. Property Owner

We loved it as soon as we arrived and settled in instantly. A nice, thoughtful welcome pack. Friendly hosts - John and Jacky. All we had to do was get on with enjoying ourselves. Good location for Charmouth beach, Beer (town), Seaton (Tramway) and, of course Lyme Regis. We all enjoyed a proper holiday.

The house is beautiful and very spacious and well equipped, we have no hesitation in booking again. The walk down into Lyme Regis is beautiful along the River Lym and an easy walk down. Lyme Regis is a lovely seaside town and the whole coastline is beautiful. We loved it and highly recommend.

A small handrail leading down the steps to the bedrooms would be good and also a handrail leading down the main steps to the property which are really a little hazardous for older people and children (looking back on previous comments I can see this has been highlighted before and that it was being addressed) so apart from those problems everything was great Would definitely book again

  • "We were very pleased with the property."

It was well equipped, spacious and well located. The countryside and coast are beautiful. We have two major concerns. Firstly, noisy pointing was being carried out on an external wall during our stay. This was intrusive and started early in the morning and on one occasion before 8am! We should have been forewarned of this. The owner has been very cavalier and does not take responsibility and has made no attempt to compensate for this. Secondly, after our stay, the owner, fully backed by Sykes, accused us of breaking a bar stool and damaging a coffee table. This was simply untrue. While we accept these were slightly damaged, they were in that state when we arrived. To our dismay Sykes, on behalf of the owner, have charged a good housekeeping bond of £250. We feel this is most unjust. Any attempts by us to reach a mutually acceptable outcome have been rejected by Sykes Cottages and the owner. This experience has left a very bitter taste on what would have otherwise been an enjoyable holiday. Unless we get recompense, we shall never use or recommend Lime Bay Holidays or Sykes Cottages (same company)

Thank you for the review, house keeping during the checkout reported damage direct to Lyme Bay holidays. Lyme bay advised us that coffee table needed replacing. This was replaced no charge was made for the bar stools. Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely property but slightly let down, for the price, with several niggling areas."

The quality of the housekeeping wasn't very high, with dirty towells (2), dirty crockery in cupboard, and slightly stained cushion/seat cover. The stairs to the property need a handrail, there is a very loose paving slab at entrance and the light at top of the stairs was broken. We loved the views from the large doors, but not the bench seating which was very uncomfortable. Would also suggest to fix the bar stool and replace the circular sofa with at least 2 more bar stools so that people can sit and chat whilst someone cooks. There were no dishwasher tablets, just an empty box and no salt in the shaker. We don't usually bring salt! I think with a little more care and quality, this could be a super place to stay.

We are sorry to hear the property didn't quite meet our normal high standards of housekeeping. The property should supply basic consumables such as dishwasher tablets and clean towels should be left out for guests. We will forward your other comments for improvement to the owner for consideration. The Lyme Bay Team Thank you for the feedback we have placed some additional bar stools in the property, the outside lights at the top of the stairs have been replaced. We now have hand rail fitted. Just a few points Parking 4 cars would be very hard and we found it hard with all the gravel The steps down to front door would be nice if there was some kind of rail The bedroom with the en suite, the lights by bed don’t work and bedroom door was catching on curtains, we had to push the curtains out of the way to open or close the door as we did not want to damage them One of the handles in the jack and Jill bathroom needs to be looked at and we found the lock very stif to turn Found that the soak aways in the showers was not very clean I one of the ovens trays had grease in it But on the hole we loved the house and would go back again

Our issue is with the mattress in the larger double bedroom with the jack and Jill on-suite. The springs are completely gone and it’s really not as it should be for the cost of the rental. Also as others have said to strip all of the bed linen is not a usual process and seems lazy on your behalf given the cost iof the rental. Without these isssues it would be 5 star not 4 !

  • "The Stables was a great place for a group of 8 of us to stay for a long weekend and celebrate a birthday."

Extremely well finished and well furnished, great kitchen and bathrooms. Our only comments were that we needed more than 1 stool, to be able to sit around the breakfast bar, and maybe two more chairs for the dining table. It was a squeeze to sit 4 adults on each bench. Also some kind of covered area on the decking would be great. The mat by the glass door was not very secure, it kept riding up and became a trip hazard. We were also surprised to see we were asked to strip all the beds before we left too. (OK after lockdown, but a but cheeky now) Other than these minor points, we had a fantastic stay and would recommend. Thank you.

Thank you for the great feedback, we are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for recommending our property. We have replaced the mat by the door and there are chairs in the property if you prefer not to sit on the benches. Property Owner Property Owner

Great location for exploring East Devon/Dorset. We stayed with 2 under 4s and it was safe and spacious for them to run around with the added bonus of the highchair. The decking area was fab and we were lucky enough to sit out and enjoy the view. Very well equipped kitchen and it was great to have a utility to do some of our washing whilst we were away. The bathrooms were clean and spacious, as were the bedrooms We would have liked bathsheets as the towels were quite small, a small handrail to go down the stairs to the bedrooms would have helped and we found the mattress were too soft but overall it was a wonderful holiday and we really enjoyed the stay and we would definitely recommend. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could need. The welcome pack on arrival was an unexpected treat. We were lucky enough to have good April weather and were able to sit out on the decking and appreciate the gorgeous view.
