The accommodation is well appointed and very comfortable and we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the welcome pack. We had 2 well-behaved dogs with us and the pretty enclosed garden was a real bonus for them - and us! Being so close to Wimbleball Lake was a real advantage for walking and we explored the area a little with visits to Tarr Steps and Dunster Castle. We found there was no mobile signal at the cottage but it had Wi-Fi and the owners were on hand for emergencies.

It is well positioned for visiting the area, our favourite being Tarr Steps. The only thing we were slightly disappointed about was that the walk to the lake wasn’t easy, so we only got to it by driving to a car park about half an hour’s journey away.

The stay at Rainsbury House was comfy, safe and enjoyable. Surrounding has beautiful views and Wimbleball lake is in a short drive, Most of the key attractions/places were within 30 to 40mins drive. Valerie and Graham were a good host and provide all assistance/information needed before and during the stay. Couple of freshly baked cakes, wine bottles and locally made jams were left at the Barn as welcome gifts/compliments. Nice gesture. They stay next to the accommodation but no interference and your privacy guaranteed. I would definitely recommend Rainsbury House.

The welcome basket, or as we called it a welcome table, filled with cakes, scones and even snacks for the dog was amazing, right down to the 2 easter eggs for the grandchildren. Very comfy beds and pillows. Having 2 lounges was ideal for us, as my 20 yr old autistic grandson had a quiet lounge he could retreat to with his laptop. • "We took Rainsbury House for a short family gathering at the end of November to celebrate a cluster of birthdays."

We were a group of 8 adults and 5 children. The accommodation was more than adequate for a group of this size and was warm and comfortable despite the prevailing weather. It consisted of two converted barns which linked together internally to function as a single entity. Both kitchens were well provided with fan ovens and induction hobs and the cooking facilities were sufficient to successfully assemble and cook lasagne for all 13 people one night and a full roast on the other. The bedrooms were warm and the beds were comfortable. There was more than sufficient off-road parking for our 4 cars and, finally, there was a heated games room in an adjacent building equipped with table tennis, table football, etc, which was a fantastic bonus absorbing the attention and energy of 5 children on a wet and cold afternoon. The owners live in adjacent farm house and are readily available in the event of uncertainty or problems, but they did not intrude on our space unless asked. They maintained a supply of wood for the wood-burner heating without prompting. Their welcome pack was generous to say the least, including of two bottles of wine, cakes and all the ingredients for a west country cream tea set out for our arrival. We would be happy to return.

All the rooms were clean, tidy with fresh sheets and duvet covers. Bath and hand towels were on the beds with small bags of Roses chocolates which was a nice touch. In the main kitchen upstairs used as our main base we found a wicker hamper basket full of local craft jams, chutney and biscuits. There were also two homemade cakes, (one chocolate and one coffee and walnut) plus two bottles of wine. There were also scones on the table with butter, clotted cream and milk in the fridge. Even more of a surprise the owners had left a bag of treats for our dog. Most welcoming. The wood burner in the upstairs lounge attached to the kitchen was used most evenings and the owners filled a container of free wood anytime it was required. The games room which situated across the farm yard was used on numerous occasions by both adults and 2 young children in our party aged 4 and 7 years. The 4 year old loved the wooden train set and the table tennis competition caused a laugh between the "grannies" in the party. . The local area is very picturesque with visits to Dulverton village and walks at the nearby Wimbleball Lake and Dam. All in all a great time was spent by all and would without doubt recommend Rainsbury House.

The owners were very friendly and they had provided complimentary cakes, scones, jam and cream, chutneys and wine, which were lovely to find. There are plenty of bathrooms to serve the 7 bedrooms and it was ideal for a four generation party such as ours - ranging from 20 months to 81 years. There are lovely walks nearby and the weather was beautiful which made it even better. It was nice to have a games room and we all enjoyed that. There was a good range of utensils and crockery etc provided and there was nothing that we felt was missing. The garden was ideal and we sat out enjoying the sun. The house suited our party of 13 perfectly, ages ranged from 2 - 90years. It has a beautiful, peaceful location and was very warm and cosy in December. The beds were extremely comfortable. The owners had gone to a lot of trouble to beautifully decorate the house for Christmas. It was all very festive and looked magical. We were also given a huge Christmas hamper with all sorts of delicious goodies and the children each had selection boxes which they loved. It is this attention to detail and thoughtfulness which will make our Christmas at Rainsbury House memorable. In terms of evaluation your feedback form conflates 2 things, Sykes agency service and the actual holiday experience. In my opinion this is inappropriate and they should be evaluated separately. Your question ‘How far did Sykes go in exceeding expectations?’ was impossible for me to answer. Am I evaluating the agency service or the holiday experience? Agency service would be ‘met expectations’, holiday experience would be ‘exceeded expectations’. One thing I did not like about the agency service was being bombarded with emails. I couldn’t block them because some might have had important holiday information.

The property

The Barn and Barn Owl Cottage are let as one large unit, sleeping up to thirteen people, with an interlinking door between the two properties so it is ideal for two families if privacy is required.

The Barn sleeps up to eight, while the Barn Owl Cottage sleeps up to five, however most guests choose to use the two cottages as one, whilst making full use of the two fully-equipped kitchens and lounge areas.

The accommodation is located six miles from two delightful Somerset market towns, Wiveliscombe and Dulverton, and only one mile from the Devon border.

This rural idyll, set in 16 acres adjoining the stunning Wimbleball Lake, offers a wealth of facilities and opportunities to make the most of the surrounding area, making it a perfect stay for friends and family.

The accommodation retains many original features, including exposed stonewalls throughout, which create a real sense of charm.

All of the bedrooms are immaculately finished, beautifully combining antique furnishings with modern lamps and other thoughtful touches that will make you feel right at home.

The kitchen is well-equipped and the living areas are super comfortable.

You will also find a dining table in each kitchen for smaller, more relaxed dining opportunities.

About the location

DULVERTON

Minehead 17 miles.

Dulverton is the southern gateway to the Exmoor National Park, a small town standing between the rivers Barle and Exe, which meet further down the valley. Dulverton has some quaint narrow streets weaving between fine Victorian buildings and a three arched bridge crossing the river leading to riverside walks. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs in Dulverton and in the square is the Exmoor National Park visitor centre and art gallery, offering plenty of inspiration for exploring the vast expanse of the moor on foot, on horseback or from behind the wheel. Why not try an off road safari around Exmoor to see red deer, wild ponies and rare birds? Exmoor has been designated as a Dark Sky Reserve, where the light pollution is low and plenty of stargazing can be done. Near to Dulverton is the majestic lake at Wimblewall Country Park, the first Dark Skies Discovery Centre on Exmoor. Wimblewall is also a premier trout fishing location, and provides tuition in numerous water sports, including sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Further afield the North Somerset coastline has sandy beaches at Minehead, picturesque harbours and plenty of wild walking around Porlock Weir. A fabulous holiday destination for all those enjoying outdoor activities, dramatic landscapes and wildlife.

Note: Due to local livestock in the area, fireworks are not permitted.
