  • "This is my second stay at 12 Burgh Island and, as before, it cannot be faulted."

The apartment is spotlessly clean, incredibly well equipped and extremely comfortable. To rate it as 5* would be an understatement. Then, of course, there is the spectacular view! The milk and bottle of Prosecco were a lovely surprise. On this visit we had quite a lot of contact with the owner and he was delightful - so thoughtful and kind. I'm very sad our week is over!

  • "The Burgh Island cause way is spectacular Our only comments are : Numbered Car parking spaces bear no relation to the apartment location - so instructions explaining this would have been very helpful."

We understood from the cafe staff car park spaces have been changed many times and nothing perfect has been achieved. It was fine once we knew. Noise from apartments does travel if guests are not mindful .. that said we only had a lot of noise from above on out last day Thank you

  • "We had a lovely time at this spectacular apartment."

The location and views from the balcony blew us away and the owners clearly care about the holiday experience of their guests; the apartment was well stocked and felt very homely. I would highly recommend the apartment to anyone looking for a memorable holiday in Devon.

  • "We had a lovely stay this year at Burgh Island."

We stayed in another apartment last year and we rated this one much higher, hence booking again. The Dyson fans to keep us cool were much appreciated. All the kitchen equipment was very new. We just couldn’t fault it. The sauna was working this year which was great and the pool temp was more pleasant for the little ones. Thank you and see you next year

  • "What a great apartment!"

Wonderful view and everything you could need for a great holiday from the youngest family member to the oldest. The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need and then more. The whole apartment has a home from home feel, comfy beds too. Took a bit of a search to find the apartment info book (in one of the drawers) but it covered most things you would need to know, It would of been helpful to advise that there was no key for the patio doors, we were afraid to really push the handle down in case it was locked and we broke it, however they do not lock it and it is a hard push to open. We had a lovely stay and would love to come back.

So glad that you enjoyed the apartment. The info book is usually out on the sideboard, apologies if someone tidied it away. There are instructions on the patio door regarding opening it, but we can add a note that no key is needed. Its never come up before, but we always try to respond to comments. Property Owner

The views are incredible. The apartment is well equipped with everything you need and there’s a good pool and cafe downstairs serving good food.

We are so pleased that you obviously enjoyed your visit, Bigbury on Sea is a special place. We always are blown away by stepping into the lounge with its almost unbelievable fairy tale view. We have just finished restoring the sauna after it was closed through covid. We look forward to welcoming you again. Property Owner

  • "Apartment superb."

Quality of furnishings brilliant. Views amazing. Only negative in the apartment was the patio door. Very, very stiff and heavy to open. Not sure if this can be sorted. Nothing to do with the apartment but the noise from outside doors banging disturbed us during the evenings and through the night. Can these doors be made to soft close?

So glad that you enjoyed it. We are sorry that you found the patio door heavy, they are quite heavy because at some times of year they take a considerable beating by the elements. Also sand blown up from the beach only about 30ft away also gets in the tracks and we do our best to get it out frequently. The rear doors to the building are hopefully having a total makeover this winter/next spring. Property Owner

Had great weather so made use of balcony and beach. Appt very comfortable and loved listening to the sea. only drawback not much within walking distance and because out of season (June) several restaurants not open Mon/Tue.

We are pleased that you enjoyed yourselves. Out of season we drive over to Kingsbridge and Salcome. All pub/restaurants struggle with getting and keeping staff currently so reducing opening at times that they know are quiet helps them. Property Owner

  • "Fantastic Apartment, had everything we needed and more and such good quality, which we appreciated."

It felt like we were staying in a home not a rental property. Excellent heating system, comfy beds and really appreciated the bottle of Prossecco. The Dishwasher and Washer/Dryer were a great addition, and we enjoyed the selection of DVD's and games provided. It was all the extra little touches that made the difference, an owner that truly cares about their guests. The only suggestion I have is that maybe some corner protectors for the edge of the double bed frame, as we got caught out a couple of times. Bathrooms were fresh and modern, walk in shower was a bonus for my elderly parents. The views are fantastic and having our meals looking out to the island was a treat. The one thing I am glad I did above all else was to have an online shopping order delivered on our arrival. I hadn't realised just how isolated we were, and although we did use the village shop a couple of miles away, the narrow road that leads in and out of Bigbury on sea is about five miles from the main road and then probably another seven miles to the nearest supermarket. We enjoyed the facilities at the Club next door, the pool was a little cool but ok once you got moving. The Sauna was not available during our stay, but the Gym was well equipped. The Cafe was small but clean and bright with a good menu, but closed at 5pm for most of our stay except the weekends. We had a very good meal there and it was freshly cooked and delicious and we enjoyed the ambience. All the staff we came across around the apartments were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a walk across to the island and a visit to the The Pilchard Inn, but that was very weather dependent and being the end of March, we did have rather a mix. All in all, we couldn't fault this apartment in any way and it rates as the very best place we have stayed in on a self catering basis.

Thank you for your kind words, we love the apartment and enjoy sharing it. We were there the week before you! We are always entranced by the view as you first enter and can sit and watch all day! It's a very special place. The plan is to re-open the sauna but 2 years off in lockdown has taken its toll, so it needs work. We are not alone in this and Devon-time starts to operate. The Club is currently having a makeover and a new menu started on the 1st April. Property Owner

  • "A lively apartment with great facilities."

Just a bit dusty and not as clean as could be but didn't stop our enjoying the holiday. Because of our age it was difficult for us sitting on the settees as no proper armchairs . Other than this we loved it.

The apartment is deep cleaned at every changeover - ie the previous 4 weekends. We've never had this comment before and our housekeeping team are horrified. It's difficult to comment re armchairs, the apartment designs lend them to sofa/settees. The majority of BIC apartments have some form of these, we can only suggest looking at the photos of apartments to check furnishings before booking. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay, the Bigbury on Sea view is absolutely magical. Property Owner

  • "Fantastic flat in great location We stayed at number 12."

Although expensive, the location is on the beach, overlooking Burgh island and is fantastic. The positives Lovely flat, with all amenities. Owner leaves a little bottle of milk and a bottle of bubbly. Dishwasher Washing machine 2 bathrooms 2 showers Secure in a gated development Owner easily contactable and very helpful The phone is available on a honesty scheme Both showers are strong, hot and really good Very nice beds, tastefully decorated Lovely beaches on your doorstep Lots of historic pubs nearby Outside shower in the complex to wash off after the beach Negatives The road to Bigbury is super narrow and can get very busy The biggest negative is the guy who works in the cafe. Roger maybe. Even though the person who'd book the swimming pool for the evening, as they only wanted to use the jacuzzi, said my sons could use the pool, but oh no, Roger kicked us out, quite rudely, clearly forgetting that we were guests, paying £2 grand a week and were on holiday!! The Internet and phone around the immediate area is virtually non existent. The Internet did go down in the flat for 2 days but this was down to a storm The flat has a leak meter, so at the time of our visit, it kept switching the water off every time we used the washing machine. Not a big issue as you can simply press a button to restart it All in all I would highly recommend this property. I think we will arrange a return visit. Just a shame about Mr. Miserable job's worth

But patio door very stiff and 2 cracked mugs one leaked left in cupboard upside down and told cleaner about them. Sorry accidentally picked up plastic door stop will return when we go to number 2 next year. Could not wait to book another holiday which we have now done.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the property. Due to the location of the apartment the patio doors are thicker and heavier than standard patio doors. The doors are cleaned regularly to remove any sand from the runners and every 3 months the doors are dismantled to give them a complete clean. The cracked mugs have been replaced. The location is amazing and we hope that you have a lovely holiday when you return next year. Property Owner

Beds comfortable, very Well equipped , clean apartment. Decent size parking space great. Loved the swimming pool, Liz was so nice very helpful. Just a couple of ‘issues’ the carpets in both bedrooms had many many marks on them as did the dining room chair seats. Plus the carpet into the double room had come out of the gripper and was fraying out. Disappointing when the apartment is expensive. Minor moan the dining room chairs are sooooo heavy. Hopefully the carpets will be cleaned during the Winter

We are very glad that you enjoyed your stay. Liz and Howard have now taken a pub so a new team had to come in. Thanks for raising the issues, we were aware but its not easy to get carpets and fabrics cleaned/changed whilst the apartment is fully booked. Both were dealt with promptly as soon as we could get a 'gap'. the new fabric in the chairs is great, and a colour match for the futons. Property Owner

Thank you for providing your valuable feedback which we discussed with the owner of 12 Burgh Island who reports that the uplighter works fine, it is operated by a foot switch, the towel rails are permanently set at a good warm level with controls at the bottom had you desired them to be warmer. It is the first time in this apartment , and we certainly enjoyed it , however the only big negative issue was on arrival we could not get into the property , there were no front door keys left in the key safe . There is no signal for the mobile phone in Bigbury so struggled to contact owner , eventually contacted the caretaker from the cafe , who came out promptly to provide the keys . Burgh Island View Apartments

Just 20 yards from Bigbury-on-Sea's big and splendid sandy beach, looking to Burgh Island Causeway, are 29 stunning, high quality apartments, of which we let a number. Within the same building are excellent leisure facilities and a restaurant. The views over the sea to the south and west, and at low tide of a vast expanse of smooth washed yellow sand reaching to Burgh Island, are outstanding. The island's jolly pub, The Pilchard, is fun to visit (long-legged sea tractor at high tide). All the apartments, which are privately owned and individually furnished, have those sensational views, and are wonderfully light, with large, airy open-plan living/dining/kitchens and glazed doors to balconies or terraces. The smallish bedrooms, at the back (without views), have good quality en suite bath or shower-rooms. The apartment building is three-storey. Most apartments have easy access (short walk from parking and between 5 and 9 steps down to the lift). The ground floor (still high above the beach) apartments have big terraces, the first and top floor apartments have very good-sized balconies. The leisure facilities, which are free for guests to use and open from 10am every day (except Christmas Day), include a fine indoor swimming pool (40' x 20' x 4'6"), spa pool, well-equipped gym (treadmill, steps, cycles, Concept II Rower and other instruments of torture) and sauna (no children under 14 in gym or sauna). There are changing rooms, a shower and disabled loo. The Club restaurant/smart bar, is open 10am to 9pm during the High Season, reservations recommended (for all other times of the year, please contact the Leisure Centre for opening times), serves excellent food throughout the day, with a popular dinner menu which varies daily and themed evenings. You can also order meals to take to your apartment. The comfy lounging area has sofas and WiFi, and the sunny outdoor terrace faces the sea.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

BIGBURY-ON-SEA

Modbury 6 miles; Plymouth 12 miles.

Bigbury-on-Sea is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you’ve got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury-on-Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there’s plenty of entertainment for budding marine biologists. There’s also a wide and varied selection of watersports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. Windsurfing and kite-surfing are popular here, with hire facilities located right on the beach. To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury-on-Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. You can even take the dog onto the beach, although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer. Bigbury’s most famous landmark is Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However, when the tide is in you can still reach the island by hitching a ride on the popular and unique ‘sea tractor’. Burgh Island boasts an award-winning hotel, elegant and rather genteel, it’s an ideal romantic retreat for couples. Explore the South Devon coast with its fabulous sandy beaches and its breathtakingly beautiful coastal path or simply take time to visit some of the charming estuary towns and villages dotted throughout the area, such as Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. The city of Plymouth and the wild open spaces of Dartmoor are also both close at hand.
