  • "This cottage is very well situated in the middle of Watchet."

Access into (and out of) the courtyard is through gates with a keypad. This worked well once we became familiar with the number entry. Having the car park available next door to the property with a permit was an advantage. The shops and pubs are literally only a few minutes walk away. It was good to have a gas hob and an excellent frying pan. As usual there was only a clothes hanger drier which given wet weather was more difficult. The TV gave a good picture and generally a good signal once I had reconnected the aerial cable to the booster.

  • "In general a good cottage in an excellent central location, very handy for the main pubs, shops and cafe."

Only a short stroll from the marina, but also benefits from being located in a quiet gated courtyard. The cottage could just do with a bit of an update and a really good clean to turn it from good to great. The sofa had seen better days, probably one of the risks of being ‘pet friendly’. Laminate floor needs a good clean and the carpet on the stairs and landing needs replacing. The non slip mat in the bath needs replacing too, as it’s not in very nice condition and would be relatively cheap to renew. So overall good, just needs a bit of work to bring it back to the high standards we have come to expect of Sykes.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We are sorry to hear of these concerns which we will immediately raise with our housekeeper. We do our best to reinvest and keep on top of Maintenance and of course cleanliness so we are disappointed to hear that this was not up to your expectation and hope it won’t put you off returning we will address this immediately many thanks. • "A delightful little place near the heart of Watchet, a beautiful little harbour town."

Parking on the public car park was not a problem even on busy days there was a space . Even though it backs onto the car park it wasn’t noisy or busy . Shops and restaurants and the harbour all within short walking distance. Local residents were very friendly and helpful and there was a lovely sense of community. Cottage inside was very clean and tidy , adequate kitchen essentials for cooking , also a washing machine and fridge freezer. Bed linen and towels were bright , fresh clean and spotless . The only thing I would say wasn’t so great was the maintenance of the outside of the property to the front and rear , the front door looked very tired and weary as did the patio furniture and rear court yard where it needed weeding and a lick of paint and general maintenance on the patio doors . The lining of the patio curtains was ripped in several places and the sofa looked a bit tired in places , general wear and tear. I have only marked it lower for maintenance as the facilities were great . Non of these things spoiled my stay or made me uncomfortable I would like the owners to be aware as it really is a great little place and a wonderful place to explore Watchet and the surrounding areas, these things would only improve and enhance its overall appeal. Also the little guide book could potentially include a lot more information about places to visit and events at the local harbour. Whilst I was there there was a lovely little market by the harbour and events at the Quay that I found by chance. Dunster Beach is beautiful and great for walking dogs only a short drive away , the Memorial Park a short walk from the cottage with a nice space to walk dogs . Also there’s a lovely walk along the old steam route at Dunster beach which is flat and paved with beautiful views of the sea and the fields and castle . Watchet is a lovely little gem with all needed for a lovely stay and there are plenty of things to do and explore.

Excellent location for the town and amenities and not too inconvenient having to use the adjacent public car park. Minor grumbles: some lightbulbs not working; needed to send reminder to owner to get parking set-up; heating (Hive-controlled) a bit erratic; gate combination lock difficult to see in the dark, but overall a very pleasant stay and would return.

It did feel a a bit tired and the cleanliness wasn't that good, we had to wash up the cooking pots before we could use them and it just felt a bit unloved. The slats on the single bed came away very easily, it would only takes someone to go round with a screwdriver and fix them in position to sort them out. The pressure on the shower is very weak. It was an enjoyable stay, but could do with a bit of a re-furb.

The hot water is really hot very quickly, and the bed is super comfortable. We appreciate the car parking and the fact that the accommodation is very quietly situated but so central to everything you might need in the town. We were a little disappointed that the glasses needed washing before we could use them, and we had no cupboard to store our food. However the fridge and freezer were very useful. Thank you.

  • "Location couldn't have been better."

The system for pre arranging parking and collecting the keys - couldn't fault. On arrival the cottage looked clean, a few scuff marks here and there but nothing major. We noticed a slight problem after the first night and bought it to the owner's attention, this was sorted promptly and we were happy. We found the mattress on the bed way too soft for our liking. Our main issue was the cleanliness of the saucepans and some of the kitchen utensils which we only noticed after a few days. The saucepans all had food residue in them which we had to clean out and most of the knives and forks had grease on them. We found that unacceptable and shoukd have been picked up by the cleaning staff before we arrived. Apart from that issue we had a good stay.

Cottage matched the description. All lovely and clean, plenty of spare bedding and good kitchen facilities. Comfortable beds, good Wi-Fi and TV (once we figures out that it all needed switching on). Always parking available in the car park. My only negative point was that the shower screen leaked substantially. I had to direct the shower head with the least impact of hitting the screen or the side of the bath to reduce leakage which made for a less enjoyable shower.

No shower gel, or soap bars were provided and the liquid soap dispensers in the bathroom and toilet had approx 1 cm of soap at the bottom; there was hardly any washing up liquid left in the kitchen, no scourer pad to help clean dirty crockery and the frying pan, the cleaning spray for work surfaces was empty and finally there were no spare toilet rolls provided. These may seem minor problems to some people, but to us it took the edge off our experience. The last thing we expected was to have to go out as soon as we had arrived to purchase the basic essentials.

A nice little place, which can sleep up to 4 but is most comfortable for 2/3 due to the small living space and lack of preparation area in the kitchen (all the more reason to experience some of the nice eating establishments in town - as if there were not enough excuses already). Ideally situated by the main amenities in Watchet and the water, it's the location which is the major attraction for the Malthouse. The owners were very friendly and helpful, which is another big plus point considering similar properties we've used in the past. At the time we stayed there were a lot of weeds in the outdoors area that might need attending to now and again, though our children enjoyed pulling some out :)

  • "The cottage is perfectly situated in the centre of Watchet, 60 seconds walk from the Co-op which is open til 10."

Watchet is an absolutely lovely little place where you can easily spend time just pottering about, in and out of the shops, pubs and cafes, on the beaches, people watching, having a drink or an ice-cream etc. There is plenty to see and do around the surrounding areas too and if you have a car then a drive to the Quantocks, and Blue Anchor are a must. Dunster is also a lovely village to visit. I communicated with John about the cottage and he was prompt and friendly in his replies. The cottage itself is lovely inside. Quite modern, and with traditional doors that really give it a quirky style. On arrival I found a bottle of wine had been left for me, and also tea, coffee and sachets of milk, which was a nice touch. The place is small and I was fine, as I was travelling solo but the listing says it sleeps 4 which I would think would be difficult. The small bedroom is very small. The sofa is a corner sofa with 5 ‘seats’ but you would struggle to get 4 adults on it without everyone’s knees touching. I thought it was perfect for 1, or a couple, and the second room would be fine for a small child, definitely not another couple. I found it strange that there were no cooking basics - eg oil, but there was, at least, salt and pepper. I was disappointed in the cleanliness. On first arrival I was desperate for the bathroom and went into the downstairs loo. There was a brown mark on the seat which I assumed was discolouration but I was able to remove it with toilet paper, so it was clearly something else. I cannot believe a cleaner could kiss something so obvious. It definitely put me off immediately. I also found plates that were not properly clean and the hob wasn’t clean either. The slats in the blinds of the bedroom window were dusty. The owners really need to have a word with the cleaning company. The outside area was frequently shaded which was a blessing in the heatwave and I enjoyed being out there early mornings and evenings. Unfortunately it looked a bit shabby - with weeds growing, plants in pots dead or dying, a dirty table and a mop and bucket out there for some reason! 10 minutes of attention would fix the backyard and it is a shame it hasn’t been done as it lets the property down.

The owners have clearly listened to criticism and acted accordingly. We arrived to find the cottage clean, fresh and bright. Everything worked properly, the welcome pack was indeed welcome, and the level of equipment was fine. In fact, it's rather better than the description and photos suggest, as the old larder fridge has been replaced by a much-needed washing machine (although we couldn't find a drying rack) and a full-size fridge-freezer added. There a nice little private outside space that catches the sun in the afternoon. We enjoyed fossil-hunting in nearby Helwell Bay and a steam train trip to Minehead, with its sandy beach. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's cottage is a short car ride to the east and the splendours of Dunster Castle are nearby to the west. The caravan park at Blue Anchor has a nice indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room that's very reasonably priced and available to non-residents at off-peak times. As for the town itself, the shops are handy (the Co-op is two minutes away) and enough for everyday needs (there are out-of-town supermarkets at Minehead). I can recommend Sam's Deli where I bought one of the best scotch eggs I've ever tasted. The museums are small and welcoming and the Esplanade (lots of benches and shelters) gives a great view of the harbour.
