  • "Dear Sir, With reference to above booking for 6th – 10th AUGUST at CAMILLIAS, LAKELAND, MAMLAND, DAWLISH, EX6 8HG, DEVON."

Arriving TUESDAY 6th late afternoon and went to collect the keys from the Owners property. We were told the cottage was open and the keys inside. On entry to the cottage it smelt extremely fausty, as if it had not been used for some time. The locks to the main door and conservatory did not lock!!!! As it was now late we decided to solve these issues the following day Wednesday. Wednesday we couldn’t the Owner and spent the day out returning late. Thursday 8th morning on our way out, we came across a group of Men in the driveway who waved me down to stop. One approach the car and ask if we were going out, l asked why, and he explained that they were representatives of a company of Joint Receiver’s, Moorfields Advisory Limited, 8251 St John Street, London, EClM 4JN 020 7186 1158 serving papers on the Owner of all Holiday Lets and Out Buildings on the land. They were changing all the locks and taking an audit of the contents of the buildings. Can you imagine how we felt ? finding ourselves in this fractious situation, between both parties. There were a number of Security Men with them and they remain all day and night, for the continuation of our designated stay and were there when we left. This heighten my Partners anxiety even more, on top of not being able to lock the property, we now have complete strangers patrolling the grounds, day and night. This was a complete spoiler on our holiday brake as we had chose this place because of its advertised isolation, which was now not the case. We were now living in serial circumstances that we did not expect. We are seeking recompense for this most unsatisfactory experience we endured, through no fault of our making. I have received an email from Sykes asking me to complete on the findings of our stay, and as yet not completed, because of the detrimental effect it could have on your companies reputation. I would appreciate a urgent and satisfactory outcome to out spoilt holiday experience Your sincerely, Stephen Fleet

  • "Diane was very pleasant and helpful."

It is a difficult place to find but a little patience is required particularly on the single lane roads which for some reason have a speed limit of 60mph when 30mph would be more appr opriate. Perhaps a warning sign or mirror at the end of the drive would help too and for the Council a Give Way sign at the crossroads! The accomodation was excellent thank you although more natural light or stronger bulbs would help and it was a joy to see the deer! The rooms were clean although a few cobwebs had appeared following two days of non occupancy. The literature was a little out of date but we were warned and there is the internet which was good! Perhaps a little more trimming of the foliage would help too but we were warned of this too. Remote but enjoyable thank you

Hello, Thank you for choosing Camellias Cottage for your Devon holiday. We can't comment on the National road signage but our Devon lanes are a speciality! Thank you for your lovely comments regarding Camellias Cottage itself, surrounded by blossoming camellias and flowering shrubs it does offer a secluded holiday retreat. Holiday literature has not quite recovered since the COVID closure this is why we leave the older Tourist information to help you find your way around. We are pleased to hear you had a lovely time. Kind regards from Diane Property Owner

  • "Only problems we found were the drive from the road to the property was overgrown, the property was surrounded by trees and bushes, this prevented light getting into the property and we had to have lights on during the day,the conservatory had a damp problem and we were unable to use it because of the damp smell, also none of the locks to the rear of the property worked, however the property was well furnished and very clean."

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. I am pleased you found the cottage well furnished and so important that you were pleased with our level of housekeeping. Thank you. The picture of the cottage does show and we do say it is on the edge of a copse of camellias and other flowering shrubery and trees. We are, as you know in the heart of the Devon countryside and recent rains have indeed encouraged garden growth. We have not found there to be any damp in the log house at all, but some fresh air through an open window, even in the conservatory, would give you more of our lovely Devon air to enjoy. We have checked and all the modern locks are in good working order. As you know we are on hand at all times to assist our Guests with any queries or special requirements. Property Owner

  • "What a gorgeous place to stay!"

We had a herd of deer grazing right outside the window. My dog loved her woodland walkies as did I. The cottage had everything we needed and was very warm and comfortable. The only slight gripe was that the bathroom could get quite chilly at night. Thank you, we really enjoyed our stay.

  • "Wonderful setting although cottage felt very cold dark and unwelcoming a few more heaters and brighter lighting."

Also a sign at front gate indicating that magnolia lake cottages are there would have been useful.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. As it is pictured, Camellias is located at the edge of a wooded area, the ideal place for a Log Cabin. I am sure when you turned on the heaters, in every room, and switched on the lights, wall lights, chandelier and spot lights, the cottage would have given you a very warm and cosy feeling. Nowadays with Google Maps, What3Words and navigators additional signs are no longer encouraged. Property Owner

  • "Diane was a good host and the cottage had everything we needed for our stay."

We understood before we stayed that the cottage was in the woods and it is a lovely setting. Not easy to find, especially at night, as signage to the property is non-existent but ok when we got used to it! As previous travelers have mentioned the cottage is dark. This is very true! Much better quality and brighter lighting should be installed to make the cottage more comfortable. Heating is by small plug-in electric heaters - 3 in total and they are not enough to ward off the late September chills.

Although a little dark as it is nestled among the trees, the lights were adequate so it didn't affect our stay. We had a lovely time in that part of Devon. Lots to see and do even with crazy weather and good food around as well. Always important!

Cottage had a musty smell, very dark inside need to have lights on all the time ,needs branches cut off trees to let sunlight in ,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Camellias is located on the edge of a wooded area as depicted on the website listing. This is a rural area and the trees are well maintained. I understand it was quite quite stormy and rainy during your stay so unfortunately was the weather unseasonably gloomy for your June holiday. There is a conservatory at Camellias that is light and airy and the light levels in the log cabin are quite good. As with all properties, it is always best to keep ventilated especially during a two week booking. Property Owner

  • "It was wonderful to experience Devon in Las Magnolias."

It was exactly as expected, the place was clean and we had everything we needed. It is the perfect place to go and disconnect from the world, as there is barely no internet, which invites you to explore the surroundings or just enjoy the company of each other. There are plenty of things to explore, just ask Diane or her son for some recommendations. I would repeat again!
