  • "The information we received from Sykes we found to be incorrect."

The Apple Barn was well equipped and had far more than what was stated in the information from Sykes. We found Sykes information quite off putting to be honest. The check in time was 5pm, which we found was far too late especially if you were arriving in winter time and had to find the Barn. Check out time was stated as 9 but the information received in Apple Barn was 10 am, which is far better. Again we found 9am would have been too early. Katherine was there to welcome us when we arrived. Beds were comfy and Apple Barn was very warm and we did not need to use the wood burner.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay, the Apple Barn was cosy and comfortable lending itself to using only the ground floor as there were only two of us plus doggies it worked really well."

It was well appointed with everything we needed and the decking outside was perfect for relaxing. The car parking was well sorted with plenty of space to safely park our car. The owners, Katherine and John were very pleasant and approachable and of course their lovely dog Fizz was nice and friendly.

  • "Pleasant converted barn in beautiful surroundings."

A couple of negatives however. Although the barn has a ground floor bedroom with ensuite, it is not really suitable for guests with mobility issues. I had to purchase a half step in order to safely use the shower cubicle. The only real access to the barn is via a flight of wooden steps with no handrail. I feel the property description should be clearer on these It is correct that the barn is not compliant with Part M of the building regulations in force at the time this listed barn was converted. The necessary modifications to the listed building and setting would not have allowed for this, and in addition to the fact that this is a farm, with sloping gravel surfaces, it was not feasible to set out to be “disabled compliant”. Thank you for highlighting this to other potential bookers with serious mobility issues. We would of course hope that it is evident from the photographs that there are steps to the property. In fact, there are three external doors to the barn, two of which have steps and no grab rails. There is however a small glazed door to the rear of one of the sofas, with a key for guest use. The threshold of this door is virtually flush with the exterior gravelled surface. We also gave you a key to the glazed doors directly out of the ground floor bedroom, which have a standard height threshold. We have had an access statement since opening the cottage and will double check with our marketing agent that this is available to prospective bookers. The shower in the ground floor bedroom is a 900mm quadrant shower with a standard low rise shower tray. We do not propose to fit grab rails, for several reasons but partly as the shower door handles provide for some stability, along with rubberised matting, which we do supply. We understand that access detail is important to anyone with serious mobility issues, and understand that the ground floor room, whilst generally making for a great and spacious bedroom, may not meet everyone’s specific needs. issues. I did speak to the owner, by phone, prior to our visit, to ask if there was a grab rail in the ground floor shower. The owner said this wasn't possible, but a temporary one could have been added easily. I would suggest that an access statement should be undertaken and the property details amended. We enjoyed our visit to the area.

  • "We had a problem with first no water and then no drinking or cooking water for 5 ..."

We had a problem with first no water and then no drinking or cooking water for 5 days the owner of the cottage was on holiday and made it clear they didn't care about customers or want their relaxing break disturbing and told us to purchase bottled water they had an appalling attitude

It is important to us that issues (which with the best will in the world will arise) are dealt with swiftly and fairly. Atypically for a self-catering cottage, we do live on site, and as you correctly point out were on half term holiday with our family. On the odd occasion this occurs, we have help at hand, and so it was on this occasion. We are always contactable by telephone, and the agency through whom you booked were also at hand. We received no advice from you that there was a problem. Rather, guests in our other cottage text on the morning of the 4th day of your 7 day-stay to say that the water pressure was low. Our domestic and farm help were on site within an hour, at which point they advised that no guests were “home”. Through their actions, full water supply was restored the following (Tuesday) morning. The water engineer also attended on Tuesday. At that point, you had experienced a water outage for one evening of your stay. Post-resolution, the water would have been heavily discoloured and we advised you to run the water for a length of time necessary to clear the sediment. We appreciate that this may have taken quite some time and advised that you should drink bottled water meanwhile. We contacted you several times to keep you informed and advised that we would arrange for compensation (for both the inconvenience and the cost of the bottled water) once home. This has now been done and you accepted our offer, which we believe to be fair. We are of course sorry that this issue affected your stay. Our response to this incident could not have been any quicker and would not have been any different had we been at home. I spent considerable time in communication with our helpers and water engineer over the affected period from afar, and am struggling to see how you came to the conclusion that we didn’t care, didn’t want our break disturbing or had an “appalling attitude”. Our litmus test is that our other guests (to whom we have offered the same compensation, despite them asking for nothing) were understanding, appreciative and moderate in their reaction to both the incident and our response. The lovely owners were very helpful and informative, with excellent directions to the property. Beautiful views and gorgeous sunsets from the seated outside terrace. Location was good with easy access to main roads east and west, for visiting coastal resorts, towns and Jurassic coast. Just a very minor point, we felt we could have done with more than one towel per person as they took a long time to dry after a shower but we had a wonderful stay and would thoroughly recommend the Apple Barn.

Linda, Thank you for your helpful feedback. We do only supply one towel (as standard), and do have drying racks and a tumble drier, as the heated towel rails only come on with the heating (Winter). To help further and picking up on your request, we have now put a spare basket of towels in the broom cupboard for guest use. All best wishes, Kathryn Property Owner

  • "Although we understand the pressures of ‘turn around day’, we still felt that 9 am is just too early to expect guests to leave."

To try to shower, pack, breakfast, strip the bed, clear the kitchen and rubbish (and we clean the bathroom and kitchen as well), and load the car, means you have to be up pre-dawn on what is essentially still a holiday day. Our lovely owner offered to change it to 10 am, which is reasonable, but by that time we had decided to leave the previous afternoon. A real shame. But we loved our stay at Apple Barn. We thought it is reasonable to take 2.5 hours to clean the cottage, and there is still plenty of airing time before next guests arrive, so surely out by 10, and next guests by 4 is more reasonable?

Thank you for your feedback, we are really sorry to hear you were unhappy with the check out time for the property. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we have been allowing extra time for cleaners to carry out the change over. Hopefully we will be able to review this soon, Property Owner

The owners were really friendly and approachable. The cottage was very comfortable and one of the nicest places we have stayed in. It was a heat wave so we were really appreciative of the fans provided. The location was wonderful, it was peaceful but within easy reach of busy Lyme Regis. If you like pulled pork baps, then I don't think you can find finer than from The Whole Hog. We also enjoyed take out lunch from Red Panda. There is not much light pollution where the property is situated so it's just about possible to see The Milky Way from the terrace. We highly recommend a visit to Sculpture by the Lakes (about an hour away in Dorchester, although no children under 14 or dogs allowed) and The Tunnel Tree Tops (about 15 minutes away in Charmouth). The cliff walk from Seaton Beach to Beer was also lovely. All in all, it was a wonderful and much appreciated break.

The standard of the property was top spec, and was very comfortable in every way. The owners were very helpful and very hospitable. My only constructive comment would be, it would be useful to have somewhere to wash your dog off outside, especially as it rained a lot when we were there. There was an outside tap, surrounded by pot plants, and would have been great if there has been a small hosepipe attachment on it. This would save carrying the dog inside to wash off, especially if your dog is a bit large, and all the carpets are cream!! I was just trying to avoid making a muddy mess! Thank you for a very long awaited enjoyable relaxing stay.
