  • "It was a lovely cottage to stay in and the hosts were very accommodating and responsed swiftly to any problems we had."

The neighbours are friendly and quiet. A very charming and peaceful place to stay. The only issues we had was there were lots of spider in the property upon I arrival that we had to remove and the bathroom lock was broken.

Obviously was not checked before we arrived. Toilet did not flush properly stains in the toilet cobwebs everywhere while I am aware that you cannot help spiders these were old black cobwebs, not what you expect, if it was cleaned prior to us arriving there was milk, scones and cream left which is very nice but really I’d rather have had it in clean I will not be booking with sykescottages again as this is not the first time, one of their, let’s has not been acceptable and they did nothing to correct this complaint in 2020 about property in Wales, and it was still being advertised in the same state we were offered no compensation or discount, and I know it will be the same this time

  • "Nice little place with everything you need."

Couple of issues though. Floors weren't very clean at all. Dead insects everywhere amd debris on the floor. Whilst I'm aware that I booked very last minute the floors just hadn't been cleaned properly at all from the previous let. I bought some floor wipes and no matter how much I cleaned the floor it was still quite dirty. Grass was very very long. You get quite a bit of noise from the adjoining house. Its sounds like their washing machine is in the property. Lots of general noise and banging from next door which isn't their fault they live there but the sound proofing just isn't there. Double bed desperately needs replacing. Mattress is knackered and bed is very creaky. The owner was very kind when I met her though. Neighbours are lovely.

It had everything we needed. The mattress on the double bed desperately needs replacing though it's worn out. Cleaning also needs more attention in general.

  • "The property was lovely and in a lovely location."

The welcome pack was also fab. The door lock on the bathroom which had been previously mentioned by others came out and my daughter got locked in so that really needs to be rectified as it really scared her. The bathroom is very damp and it wasn’t as clean as it could be around the seals. The double bed mattress definitely changing, it was so uncomfortable. If these problems were rectified then we would definitely stay again as the location and decor in the living area was lovely and everything was provided to have a lovely stay with our puppy. Even the enclosed garden area.

  • "Well equipped and comfortable."

Glad we have a car with good ground clearance as the lanes around the property were quite rough and bumpy. No mobile signal - though a short drive to a higher point soon found a signal, but of course there's the option to set the mobile to use the broasdband signal. However we found the broadband was affected by neighbours, and failed a few times.

Nice surprise to receive a welcome pack from owners or milk, scones, jam and clotted cream. Nice start to holiday, no phone mobile signal and limited internet due to remoteness, only had to drive half a mile to get phone signal though.

  • "The cottage was comfortable, the only downside was that we only managed to connect to the internet once and that was at around 10."

30 at night and connection was gone again by morning. Being so isolated, it would have been advantageous to have phone signal and internet connection

  • "The cottage was as advertised, and was very cosy."

However, there was a real issue with rubbish and recycling - this had been left in the garden prior to our stay and there was A LOT of it. We returned home from the beach one day to find it strewn all over the back garden. Not the most relaxing of sights on a holiday. There were a lot of cobwebs and flies - but being near a farm this was not unexpected. The cottage itself was nice, the bedding and towels were spotless and comfortable. The neighbours (we believe are permanent residents) kept themselves to themselves, occasional noise, but I expect they heard us too!

  • "The stay was lovely."

The place is a quaint coriander in a remote location, which was what we wanted. All facilities we as expected although I don’t think the property should be listed as having WiFi as it was very intermittent. There was more times of not having it than having it, which was problematic when looking for things to do or places to go or even checking the weather on that day. Forced us to have proper family time, which is good but we would have just liked to have planned things on the day when the weather was grim.

  • "The property is in a beautiful location and has the essential facilities for our stay."

We felt the property was over priced for the size of the property as the open planned living kitchen area is small. The property lacked ventilation as on returning from days out you needed to open all windows on warm days. Limited space to prepare meals and limited utensils with small cooking facilities. If your creative enough you can work around these limitations. On a whole we had a lovely time.

  • "Just came home after a weeks holiday at skiber goth cottage, although the cottage didn’t ruin our holiday it definitely let us down!"

On arrival the host were no where to be seen and didn’t answer any of the contact details given to us. We sat and waited outside the property after check in time, ended up letting ourselves in. No welcome. Finally managed to get hold of the host to let her know we had let ourselves in as we felt rude doing it. She just made it feel as if we were bothering her. The signal at the cottage is terrible, which I understand because of its location. The wifi which is provided is useless, it only seemed to work slowly on the day of arrival. After that it just didn’t work! The cottage itself was dirty when we arrived, the floors didn’t look vacuumed, the cutlery and cups in the cupboard were dirty (even though there is a dishwasher) the bathroom and kitchen we had to deep clean when we got there. Overall let down with the cleanliness, especially after the pandemic! The cottage is also overrun with flies!! As the other reviews say. The welcome pack was also useless, the hosts seem to care very little about their guests! Clearly there just to make money. Have stayed in many cottages across Cornwall, this by far was the worst, they are definitely doing something wrong. We wouldn’t be back.

Skiber Goth more than lived up to the photos. The sofa area was great to relax in. We had no problems with the WiFi and enjoyed being able to use the smart tv. The welcome basket was delicious. The location was quiet. Great for access to Looe, would highly recommend rock pooling at Hannafore beach, west Looe. We also fitted a trip to Golitha Falls before heading home. There was a nice homely feel, we would really like to visit again.

  • "Lovely cottage in a very quiet area."

Very out of the way with very friendly neighbours. Most of the coastal areas were well within an hours drive which is well accessible for us. The back garden was a nice small area that the kids enjoyed playing in and was well away from the road. Having a washer dryer and a dishwasher was very handy for us. One issue we had was the large amount of flies which I know is one of the issues with living rurally. Another was the lack of phone signal and slow WiFi (I know, first world problems, but having no sense of distraction I struggled to plan routes on the sat nav, book days out or ring anyone for any help)

There are three downsides though the pillows are very poor i would advise people to take their own. And the very narrow lanes leading to the cottage and the surrounding area that are not mentioned on your website. Also no mobile phone signal at the cottage other than that it was a pleasant stay. You will also get a visit from Boris the friendly golden labrador

  • "Really very dirty when we arrived."

Cobwebs on and behind every door, in most corners of all rooms. I had to remove over 30 spiders in total. Floors were dirty, I had to re-wash all plates, glasses and cutlery almost all were dirty. The state of the dishwasher was disgusting, I had to run it on a empty cycle with a tablet just to get it clean enough to use. The single beds had dirt on the duvets which was puzzling. The tiles over the bath/shower were covered in soap scum which wad hard to miss and just proved it had not been cleaned. The general cleanliness was a huge issue in itself before you even consider COVID. When we then thought about COVID it really made us quite anxious. Not an enjoyable stay at all.

Little bit to remote for us and the garden in the description was non existent we booked the barn as we thought there was an enclosed garden for the dog to play in and in the very hot weather a place for us to seat.

  • "On arrival, we found Skiber Goth had an appalling smell inside throughout the property."

There was no phone signal or wifi to contact the owners and no phone number for Sykes on the documentation sent to us on booking through them. Having traveled miles of winding lanes was unsure of how far back to go to get a signal and after traveling 6 hours to get there decided to unpack. The property had no wardrobes/cupboards to hang clothes. The furniture consists of two child-size bucket chairs 12 inches off the floor and an older two seater settee. The property is lagged so well with small windows in the bedrooms that the heat at night with no air circulation is horrendous as others have also remarked on in the guest book. Even with the windows open and mosquitoes coming in, the heat was such along with the smell it made me physically vomit. After being awake all night we started to pack up at 6 in the morning. We had booked for a week but only been in the property hours. My husband drove some distance away to get a phone signal. There was no reply to the owners land or mobile phone, so he left a message. The owner turned up and admitted he had workmen the week before in the property working on an inside tank and spillage had occurred and that was the cause of the foul rancid smell. Despite knowing this he had let the property to us in this condition. Although the guest book had many complaints about the heat in the bedrooms, and other issues mentioned, his answer was "well open the windows". Offhand and abrupt and told us to go and leave the keys on the table. At this moment in time, Sykes" although having had other complaints about this property, still let it to us. They are refusing to give us a full refund, going from an offer of refunding their commission in vouchers, to then stating the owner is only offering way less than half our money back even though we were only in the property a matter of hours. We had to find other accommodation at short notice and great cost due to their duplicity: IE The owners knowing there was at the very least a problem with the smell, and Sykes, having had other complaints, knew the property was not up to standard and continued to advertise it and take money to let it when it was not as described. The stress and hours I have spent on the phone trying to resolve this to no avail bring me to recommend you do not use this firm and avoid at all costs! I will be taking the matter further.
