"We were sad to leave Sixpenny Cottage yesterday morning."
We found it comfortable and welcoming. Juliet and Chris
-
"Ideally situated between Dorchester and Weymouth, close enough to visit but a peaceful haven away from the crowds."
There are frequent buses that run through the village of Upwey between the two, but expect a mile walk to the stop or take the car and park it in the village. Within easy reach of many open houses and gardens, the Subtropical Gardens in Abbotsbury are a must, and the tea room and wishing well water gardens in Upwey are highly recommended. Sixpenny Cottage is a well maintained and comfortable home from home with all necessary self catering amenities. Although the kitchen is small it is well equipped for preparing home meals. The bed is very comfortable and the shower is adequate although runs slowly and takes several minutes to get hot - but becomes extremely hot! The patio gets the afternoon sun and on warm afternoons is a good place to relax or take meals. The parking space is ample for one car although the drive down to it is very steep.

"Very comfortable stay, thank you."

"A beautiful little cottage a couple of miles outside Weymouth so ideal to get to most places of interest."
The hosts are charming and always on hand to help. Our second stay , would recommend.

"Exceptional for location, comfort and facilities"
-
"A wonderful relaxed holiday."
Delightful quiet position. Everything you could need. The Upwey Wishing Well tearooms are too tempting for a weak willed person...but we battled through.

"We had a lovely time at Sixpenny Cottage and managed to do everything we had planned."
The weather was kind to us and the owners Mark and Jo made us feel very welcome and couldn’t do enough to help. It was lovely to be able to sit out on the patio area after a long day and read our books in the sunshine. My husband did find the sofa and chair uncomfortable on his back and tended to sit at the table to watch TV. On the plus side the bed was very comfortable. A very good location! We will be back.
-
"The cottage was beautifully situated."
The wishing well was a five minute walk from the bottom of the garden. Many walks from the front door. Costal trips and inland sites very easy to get to. The cottage itself was a delight, both Mark and Jo were very pleasant owners. The layout in the cottage is unusual but it adds to the charm of the place. Only down side was the shower was rather a trickel and the fridge could do with being on a counter top( lots of bending as very low). But a fab break
-
"Very clean and good location."
Kitchen was smaller than expected but it was well stocked. Hosts were lovely, very friendly and helpful.
-
"A fantastic place to stay The cottage was cosy, clean Mark and Jo were a lovely couple ."
Loved sitting in the beautiful garden Lots of lovely places to visit nearby Would definitely recommend

"We were so pleased with Sixpenny Cottage."
Beautifully clean and comfortable. Jo and Mark a lovely friendly couple. Gardens were amazing. We would definitely book again in the future. Thank you both. X

"Very comfortable and relaxing place."
Lovely cottage and loved the rooks in the high trees
-
"Sixpenny Cottage was exactly what we were looking for, a tranquil location, peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle with the opportunity to venture out if we wanted."
The cottage was very well equipped...I loved the bed! Jo,Mark and Rosie ( the dog ) made us very welcome. Definitely go back again.
-
"Very spacious, comfortable cottage with lovely, peaceful garden and terrace."
I loved the atmosphere, sitting on the terrace and seeing the beautiful, mature trees. The only fault in the kitchen for us was the size of the fridge and freezer. The total size was fine, but we would have liked their sizes to have been reversed. This was a very minor point. Altogether, probably the best cottage we have ever rented.

"A lovely break in a lovely cottage, really nice gardens, the cottage was a bit ..."
A lovely break in a lovely cottage, really nice gardens, the cottage was a bit dark in the lounge due to very high trees but was still really nice and comfortable and the whole cottage was lovely and spacious, we enjoyed our stay and holiday thank you
-
"A lovely peaceful place to stay with everything you need."
Drive very steep especially for low cars but did not detract from the wonderful holiday
-
"Beautiful cottage and very friendly owners."
We had a lovely break
-
"A lovely, comfortable and clean cottage perfectly located for coastal attractions and beach walks."
A wonderful night’s sleep in the very comfy bed and lots of hot water when needed. It was nice too, to be so near to the village and Upwey Wishing Well, which was a short wander using the lane through the gate. The kitchen was a little small for self-catering with limited worktop space and a small fridge, but this was just a minor detail. Thank you for a lovely stay!

"We had a wonderful stay at warm, cosy Sixpenny Cottage."
So many highlights - from Upwey Wishing Well Tearoom, walking back from The Old Ship Inn guided by our lanterns, and a circular walk to the Hardy Monument along the Dorset Ridgeways. Visits to Dorchester and Abbotsbury (Sub Tropical Gardens, St Catherine's Chapel and Chesil Beach) are highly recommended. Mark made us feel very welcome. One of our best breaks. Thank you.
-
"Minor points only."
Partner didn’t like the leather sofas (too slippery) and would have liked an outdoors clothesline.
-
"Excellent week at Sixpenny Cottage."
Everything we needed for the week was there.
-
"Welcomed by the owners."
No kitchen roll and only one bin liner but this was remedied when we asked for another liner.
-
"The cottage was far bigger than we expected and set in a massive garden."
Although attached to the owner's house, it felt very private. It is probably the best equipped holiday cottage that we have been in and certainly the cleanest. I would highly recommend it. Very useful folder with information on places to visit and how to use all the appliances which we found incredibly helpful. A brilliant base for local walks and for travelling to places of interest. Very pleasant sunny corner to sit in also and to have meals al fresco.
-
"Sixpenny cottage is set in beautiful garden it’s so peacefully we absolutely love it ."
The wishing well gardens and restaurant are only just down the road the food is amazing. We hope to come back again next year.
-
"A very enjoyable stay at Sixpenny Cottage in the lovely village of Upwey."
The cottage has everything you could need, and is set in beautiful grounds. Plenty to see and do in the local area, Weymouth is just down the road and lots of other places within easy reach. The Wishing Well cafe is an easy stroll from the cottage, and is a 'must visit' for brunch on a sunny day sitting in the water gardens ! Many thanks to Jo and Mark, we would certainly visit again.
-
"Lovely place, owners very nice and friendly, Had difficulty working out the cooker settings but that's probably us being a bit daft and not understanding it."
Lovely setting at the back for relaxing with a glass of something and a book.
-
"Sixpenny Cottage is full of character, and is a quiet, cosy retreat set in superb grounds full of interest and surrounded by attractive woodland."
The cottage is clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, and is a superb base for both inland and coastal visits and walks. Highly recommended.
-
"The property was all we wanted, warm, comfortable, well equipped cottage in a great location."
We'll be back.
-
"The cottage was spacious and inviting."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The views of the trees and hillside from the living areas are beautiful even on dreary days. There are excellent public footpaths on your door step with views all the way out to Portland. Thanks for a fantastic stay!
-
"This was a very well located cottage."
It was spotlessly clean and comfortable with some original features. My only issues which aren't major was the shower is a bit on the small side and the bedroom radiator stayed warm even though it was turned down to the minimum setting . Overall a lovely comfortable stay.
-
"We had a lovely week in Sixpenny Cottage felt like a real home from home."
Lovely walks of the countryside from the doorstep and the added bonus of The Wishing Well Tearoom at the end of the lane. It's a great base to explore this part of Dorset.
-
"The cottage was very clean and made you feel at home a beautiful place large ..."
The cottage was very clean and made you feel at home a beautiful place large gardens and very peaceful maybe there maybe a bit of a problem for disabled people as the property is down a steep drive
-
"Sixpenny Cottage is a lovely, pretty and very comfortable cottage."
It most certainly met our expectations, as had all the things we particularly look for in a holiday rental property; it has a big very comfortable bed, it's warm (heating was set for morning and evening and we also had the option to ask for more if needed, or use the plug in heaters provided - so absolutely spot on), there is a lovely patio/sitting out area with chairs and sun loungers - and cushions to put on them. There is plenty of crockery, cutlery and everything needed to make it feel like a comfortable home. The location for visiting much of Dorset is very good, with private parking immediately outside the cottage. The brochure description is accurate which we think is important. We enjoyed it.

"The photo of the kitchen was misleading."
The kitchen is extremely small ,in fact there is not enough space to put two plates side by side. The microwave was old rusty and the controls worn from age.On safety grounds alone h this should be replaced. The electric oven and hob were also old and slow to respond. The settings on the rusty hob were worn away and the owner had had used a black pen to indicate which controls referred to which hot plate. The shower was very weak and controlling the temperature was difficult from scalding hot ( dangerously so) to freezing cold. The sitting room and bedroom were spacious but the £950 cost was excessive considering the old facilities supplied. Finally wrapped in a tea towel were two dishwasher tablets - very helpful- that is until we discovered there was no dishwasher.
-
"The washer drier."
Washes fine, but does not dry - is it vented?? As clothes were just heated up. This did not detract from the holiday.
-
"The cottage was set in a lovely location and was supplied with everything needed for an excellent holiday."
-
"The cottage was very cosy and quiet yet, had plenty of space."
The stay was very enjoyable, also, being close to many places of interest that you could visit.
-
"This was a lovely comfortable cottage ,the bed was especially good !"
The cottage was warm, it had every thing we needed it was late Oct when we stayed ,so nice to have central heating .The owners had left a bottle of wine ,milk ,tea & biscuits to welcome us ,very nice . The one negative thing was the shower ,it took a bit of getting used to ,it took while to get hot ,when it did it was very hot & easy to knock the temperature control ,the water pressure was poor so rinsing shampoo ect took a long time ! But the comfort of the rest of the cottage made up for that ! We would definitely recommend this cottage & stay again .
-
"Lovely quaint cottage, set in beautiful surroundings."
The garden was absolutely georgeous. The cottage had everything we needed. Excellent and comfortable king size bed, Wi Fi, tv, fridge and washing machine. The living room was large and comfortable also. Modern bathroom and kitchen. We got a warm welcome from our host Mark, with a nice touch of Milk and biscuits on the table on our arrival. Would we use this cottage if in the area again. Yes. Would we recommend this cottage. Yes.Thanks for a lovely week.
-
"The holiday cottage was very well provided for, down to items like cling film and milk on arrival."
It was much appreciated. Many holiday cottages in our experience provide nothing or next to nothing - leading to a costly shop. So top marks to Sixpenny Cottage. It was both spacious and comfortable. We would certainly return here for another holiday in the Weymouth area.
-
"The owners were very welcoming."
We loved the garden -could almost have spent the whole holiday there. Just a very short walk down the lane to the church and the Wishing Well cafe.
-
"This is a beautiful cottage."
Everything we wanted . Cosey, Quiet, Wonderful outlook. The back of the cottage is a sun trap. You can walk out of the back of the cottage down country lanes to a wonderful tearoom and water garden. Would recommend to anyone wanting a laid back peaceful holiday.
-
"A lovely little cottage, in beautiful setting."
Ideally situated to Weymouth and other day destinations. Warm welcome from owners. We enjoyed a very relaxing holiday
-
"I would tell future clients0 that the stairs are steep and narrow especially for people with mobility problems."
-
"I had an excellent week's stay in the area and at Sixpenny Cottage, which was sublime."
It ticked all the boxes on what I was looking for on top of that list was somewhere to relax, unwind with peace and quiet and all I could hear was the Dorset countryside it was great. It was also well equipped, spacious and well laid out so I would like to say thank you for a great holiday. Many thanks- Stayed September 2017.
-
"Fantastic cottage, owners wonderful, left us Tea and Biscuits when we arrived, if we come to Weymouth again would look to book the cottage."

The property
Sixpenny Cottage is a pretty stone-built cottage located in the village of Upwey, in the seaside town of Weymouth. Designed with its own entrance, separate from the main family house, it has good privacy, internally the property is generous and charmingly decorated and leads into the spacious sitting/dining room you can unwind.
The cosy large bedroom has an aspect of the garden and nearby woodlands.
The comfortable kitchen is fully equipped to cover all your basic needs in which to prepare wonderful meals.
The shower room still retains some of the original stone work. Discovered in the fireplace of an old shepherd's cottage, that once stood on the site, Sixpenny Cottage takes its name from a Treasure Trove of James I Six Pence pieces.
Now, it is a holiday cottage that offers pretty and peaceful surroundings.
A leisurely stroll takes you to the Wishing Well where you can enjoy an extensive menu offering homemade cooking and a variety of delicious puddings and cakes.
Take a slow walk around the gardens, making a wish at the wishing well and you walk around.
Upwey village has two pubs to choose from where you can enjoy an evening out without having to head into town.
Perfect for guests with an artistic talent the village offers inspiration with its majestic Horse Chestnut trees and sparkling stream.
For the birder or twitcher alike the surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for walking and bird watching.
Thomas Hardy gained inspiration for some of his most famous books from this area.
With an aura of yester years, the numerous attractive stone cottages which front the village add to this truly English scene.
Sixpenny Cottage is a wonderful holiday home to enjoy a holiday.
About the location
UPWEY
Dorchester 4.5 miles; Weymouth 4 miles.
The picturesque village of Upwey lies just four miles north of Weymouth, nestling beneath the Dorset Ridgeway, and takes its name from the shallow chalk stream, the River Wey, which bubbles up here from an underground spring. Upwey is well-known for its Wishing Well, where George III once sought the benefits of the natural spring water. It is now a delightful tea room, serving lunches and traditional cream teas. There are a number of footpaths leading directly from the village to miles of unspoilt countryside, and close by is the market town of Dorchester, Thomas Hardy’s ’Casterbridge’. An easy drive or bus ride takes you to the popular seaside resort of Weymouth offering visitors glorious golden sandy beaches, excellent watersports facilities and a bustling harbour. An attractive village location and an ideal place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
