  • "Met by Terry who secured parking."

Went up several flights of stairs to the apartment with Terry apologising for the smell of rotten fish which was stronger in the flat. He had used air freshen to help. Terry had put an air fan on as the storage heaters were off so the place was chilly. Terry took us through how the flat worked and agreed it was very dated in decor. Once in the kitchen I asked how the oven worked as it was very old and we had an Xmas dinner to cook. After playing with the buttons he called the owner who took him through instructions and it worked. I kept the oven on and decided to cook our Xmas Dinner early as wasn't sure it would work the next day. Terry said the TV worked but didn't know how. Terry set up the storage heater to come on overnight. We left windows open to air the flat as the fish smell remained. There was an opened carton of milk which was half used in the fridge? Good points.....bathroom did have a fresher decor than the rest of the flat. Bed was large and very firm mattress and had electric underblanket which we did use the 1st night to take the chill off the bed. We had one pillow each so had to hunt for second clean ish pillows and wrapped them in spare bedding. Had to be careful to not hit the head on the jutting out cupboard on the wall. View from bedroom was very good. Lounge has dated sofa and chairs. TV was old and the programmes kept dropping out, no signal often. Liked the chair by the window, a lamp behind would have made it a good reading spot. Electric fire came in handy. Kitchen dated and tired but well enough equipped with cooker (once it worked) microwave and kettle (very badly chalked inside though). Plenty of crockery and cutlery available and complimentary detergent/dishcloth/teatowels. Fridge was ok (apart from the half used milk in situ). Bathroom was good, good shower, loo roll and soap dispenser. No WiFi. Use your own data. TV reception intermittent. Did enjoy the sea views, distance to the beach, swimming, walks around, quirky shops and general feel of Swanage. Would return to Swanage but sadly not to this flat. For well over £400 for 3 nights I would have expected it more updated decor and furnishings, better facilities like the cooker, cleaner, not smelly and warm on arrival. I do understand its owned by someone who may not visit often and its their loved holiday home over many years Have used sykes several times in the past and usually very high standard. I feel this flat does need a total upgrade for it to stay on the holiday rental market and achieve a fair rent. If it was updated it would definitely be worth revisiting and would be fabulous. Wish I could have written a glowing review like I usually do. Sorry

I was sorry to read these comments regarding Bay View, 7 The Parade, Swanage. I think the position of my flat (2nd Floor) and the layout and furnishings inside should have been clear to you, as it is well documented with photos on the Sykes Website. I am well aware that it is not a modern flat; the rental cost reflects this as Sykes have advised that you paid £360 to stay over Christmas. It is the desirable location that is its major attraction. It is clean, comfortable and well equipped. My caretaker Terry welcomes guests and makes sure that all is well on arrival. I think that there was a misunderstanding with Sykes over the heating so that Terry did not know to advance this for you. I do apologise for the milk accidently left in fridge by myself when I left a few days before you arrived. I am sure that Terry would have happily removed it for you. Regarding the fish smell – we have never experienced this and we have been down to check subsequently and there was no smell. Also we have never had any problems with TV; all main stations and every Freeview channel including radio were working when I left. Maybe you mean that TV reception is intermittent when using phone data,?... it is not intermittent on the television. With regards to the bedding, there are 6 clean pillows (flat sleeps 2 people) with pillow protectors, and 6 pillowcases should have been supplied, I will check with Terry that this is the case in future. Although the cooker is old, it is in full working order and only did not work because a previous occupant had accidentally set the timer. We will be looking to upgrade the cooker during the next season. Property Owner

  • "The apartment is on the second floor of a lovely Victorian villa with other apartments on the ground and first floor."

. Climbing the stairs could be a bit difficult for some older persons. Parking could also be difficult during the peak holiday season. The apartment is comfortable with great views from both lounge and bedroom across Swanage bay. The centre of the town is around the corner with all amenities. Terry the caretaker was very helpful and even carried some of our luggage up to the apartment. An enjoyable and comfortable stay in mid October..

Otherwise good, bathroom had clearly been modernised. Warm, storage radiators work well. Excellent view from front windows of sea and bay.

  • "Had a lovely week in Swanage staying at Bay View."

Always wanted to stay on The Parade and this property did not disappoint, amazing views with the added benefit of a telescope to see even further! Plenty of space, good size rooms, comfortable beds with plenty of pillows and spare bedding. Bathroom recently updated, kitchen could do with a makeover but totally adequate in terms of facilities. Will be booking this property again for next year!

  • "This property was absolutely awful!"

There was a repulsive smell of urine/ammonia in the which got worse during our stay. Our opinion is a pest control expert needs to visit the property. We had planned to eat in most nights but due to the smell that wasn’t possible. We tried to spend as little time in the property as possible! Also on arrival there was rust in the drinking water which cleared but the residue was in the kettle! We had to buy our own water and a new kettle. We only received £50 compensation and didn’t feel supported by Sykes during our stay either during this awful situation. Our holiday became a depressing experience. We will never use Sykes again.

I was sorry to read Mrs Gunnion's comments about my flat, especially as I had only left it about three hours before she was due to arrive for her holiday. When we left it was spotless and smell-free. As a goodwill gesture I agreed to compensate her for the cost of bottled water. As this is the second year running Mrs Gunnion has stayed in our flat (last year hired through a different agent) and she has complained both times I trust that she will not be holidaying with us again Property Owner

  • "This apartment is very clean and tidy, the bed being comfortable and is in a wonderful location close to beach and all pubs restaurants takeaways and shops, peaceful at night."

Unfortunately it is in need of a little TLC, the kitchen is very dated and not really conducive to self catering. (Cooker is very old). Terry the caretaker is most helpful and goes out of his way to assist you with any problem. Overall a very pleasant stay. Would use again if visiting this area.

Would stay again , Caretaker was a lovely man even helped us get our laugage in . Nothing was to much trouble, we saw him in the town and asked us if everything was ok . A very enjoyable stay, lots to do , and see, even went on a steam train . Great value for money x from Lorraine and Philip Wain x

  • "This property exceeded our expectations."

It was warm, cosy and ideally situated to enjoy great views and explore the surrounding area. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. This property suited us very well and we had a great holiday. However, please be mindful that it is on the second floor (so quite a few steps), their is no WiFi and parking was very tricky.

Parking was included so we didn't need to use our car the whole weekend! The apartment was as described so we were prepared for it to be basic, but it was very nice. Small but had everything you needed for a brilliant break. WiFi would have been an asset but we managed without. The apartment was very clean and adequately equipped. Altogether a great break.

About the location

SWANAGE

Wareham 9.7 miles; Poole 20 miles.

The small, family-friendly seaside resort of Swanage is situated at the eastern end of Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast, on the celebrated Isle of Purbeck and is probably best known for its wonderful, gently shelving golden sands. The little town offers visitors plenty of shops, good pubs and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, and is also well known for its annual jazz festival, which takes place each July. The attractive, Victorian wooden pier offers a great place for a stroll or try fishing, and often used a departure point for divers, it’s a wonderful place to watch the world pass by. The historic Swanage Railway has its terminus in the town and regular nostalgic steam engine trips take tourists for a picturesque 6-mile journey, chugging through lovely countryside to stop just beyond the romantic ruin of Corfe Castle. Nearby Durlston Country Park offers a lovely day out with spectacular coastal walks, dolphin spotting and wildlife watching, together with comfortable viewing points and a well-stocked cafe for a treat after all the fresh air. Take the short drive to Studland, which has one of the finest beaches in the country, surrounded by heathland, together with the regular chain ferry, which crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour to Sandbanks. This truly is a delightful holiday destination at any time of the year.
