The Bus Stops nearby are not used by the Frequent No.1 Bus and you have to walk up to Easton Square. Otherwise a lovely quiet cottage with everything you need.

  • "This is a very comfortable & spotless cottage, well located for various walks and short drives."

Portland is more interesting than I expected and we were helped by a glorious week of sunshine. The owners were very generous, leaving plenty of necessities that other places we’ve been to don’t provide & there’s pubs/small supermarket/excellent fish and chip shop within walking distance. Our only quibble would be the master bedroom which had a double sized bed, although there was ample room for a king size one. We have a super king size at home, so struggled on the first night to get comfortable in the double. If the window is open (we sleep with open window at home), the room gets very noisy from early morning traffic. We just decamped into the back room & its single beds, which was fine for two of us but you couldn’t do that obviously if there were more than 2 occupants. The shower was great & the courtyard was pleasant to sit & eat lunch in. All in all, we had a lovely week there.

The comfort of this clean and well cared for cottage is wonderful. I can find no problem or issue - everything was carefully thought about and is at hand. A few details- Denby tableware; summerhouse for outdoor eating in shade; white cotton sheets; wood floors. Portland is friendly and relaxed. We explored the quarries, cliff walks and it’s very interesting museum. Weymouth has a wide sandy beach as well as the old harbour which I found appealing.

It is lovely to have your feedback, thank you so much. We always hope people will like the cottage and it is very nice to hear that you have enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Hallo! We really enjoyed staying at your cottage!"

Since there were no pictures of the kitchen and the bathroom, we were scared those could be bad, but they weren't at all! The neighbours were really nice and helpful. On the left side is also a holiday cottage and in the two weeks staying there we heard them sometimes when we wanted to sleep. But mostly it helped to close the windows. Finding a parking place was easy. And for those who come with kids, there is a playground and huge football field near by. It is called the Groove. Thanks for everything!

The cottage had everything we needed and was presented in a high standard of cleanliness. The extra outside toilet was a bonus! The location is great for exploring Portland and Dorset coast. The only downside was the traffic and neighbour noise at night and in early hours due to the roadside location and need to have windows open.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback, we really do like people to enjoy the cottage. I am sorry about the noise - especially when the windows were open. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was pristine clean when we arrived - bathroom, kitchen etc all spotless."

It is very well equipped - the owners have thought of almost everything. The only thing we would have liked was a bath mat. There was a plastic mat to put in the bath, but we couldn't find one to put on the floor so had to use a towel. The bathroom is small, but we didn't find that a problem. The living room was very comfortable and although the cottage is on a main road it is still very quiet at night. Being on a bus route was a big plus for us as we were able to go into Weymouth without having to worry about car parking. There is no off-street parking at the cottage, but we never had any problems finding a space close by. There was a very good selection of pots and pans in the kitchen, which you don't always find in a holiday property, and the appliances all worked very well. The main bedroom is huge, very welcoming and has plenty of storage space with lots of hangers to use. We loved the summer house, which gets the afternoon sun. It was great to return after a half-day out and relax inside it with a cup of tea. Many thanks to Dream Cottages for their prompt response when, on arrival, we found that the key to the summer house had sheared and we were unable to unlock it. A member of staff came round the next day to sort it out. Great service. There was a lot of information provided by the owners about restaurants, pubs and places to visit which we found very useful. This cottage was much more like home than many holiday cottages we have stayed in. The décor was very tasteful, the property felt very cosy and we didn't want to leave. It was one of the best cottages we have stayed in and we would like to come back.

It was a signal problem, for some reason there was no signal at all. We reported this but then the reception came back briefly on Sunday morning so we cancelled the call. On Sunday evening we had no reception again. I contacted Dream Cottages again on Monday morning and they said they would send someone out. We were out for the day but received a call from a very polite gentleman called Dave who said he would call in and see if he could fix the problem. When we arrived back Monday afternoon, the TV was working and worked for the rest of our stay. Even though Dave said he could not detect a problem and the TV was working when he arrived, he said that if we had any other issues with it, to call straight back.

  • "We enjoyed our holiday on Portland very much, and the cottage was ideally placed for regular (car) trips to Portland Bill, and a very short (but steep) walk brings you to the beautiful Church Ope cove and the old “pirates” tombs, complete with skull & crossbones!"

We had virtually no noise to endure, so it was very peaceful. Parking wasn’t as easy as we’d expected, but we always found a spot within 50 yards, occasionally being able to park right outside. The cottage itself was beautiful, it had everything we needed. Our only problem was the O2 signal didn’t work in some rooms, but I did overhear two local birdwatchers saying that their O2 signals had become quite poor recently, so probably a temporary local issue and nothing to do with the cottage at all. Portland is nicely positioned for trips out both East toward Poole and the Isle of Purbeck, and West toward Lyme Regis and Devon. We enjoyed a trip to Brownsea Island in Poole harbour - a lovely place. Also enjoyed seeing the Little Terns at Ferrybridge. To sum up the holiday and the cottage in a few words - “we loved it so much we booked for next year as soon as we arrived home!”

It exceeded our expectations. The actual accommodation is much better than the photo's imply. The decor was charming; the cottage was very clean and tidy and the equipment and facilities provided were entirely adequate. It really felt to us like 'home from home' We were particularly impressed by the comfy beds and bedlinen; the excellent shower - the water pressure is so good it was like a power shower. One word of warning though - the height in the shower is limited so a tall person may struggle. Likewise, the bath is limited in length so a tall person may struggle. Outside is the garden room with table and chairs - delightful on a warm evening. Parking outside the cottage was never a problem. The location was perfect as it was not too near to the busier areas of the island but at the quieter end. Nevertheless, the shops were close enough to walk to for supplies. We used the bus several times and the service is very frequent and takes you in to the heart of Weymouth. We couldn't fault a single thing. Stayed June 2018

The property

Positioned on the rugged and stunning Isle of Portland, Bowman's is a character, terraced Dorset holiday cottage located on the wide avenue which is Wakeham.

The owners have affectionately updated the interior decor in a modern style, whilst retaining the original and striking features of the cottage, including the exposed Portland stone walls, quarry tiled flooring and fireplaces (not in use) in the sitting room.

The galley style kitchen, complete with separate dining room, is the perfect setting to prepare your meals.

The two bedrooms and bathroom can be found upstairs via the Cottage style stairs.

Weymouth and Portland hosted the 2012 Olympic sailing events and still attracts many visitors looking for their ideal water sports holiday, including sailing, wind surfing and kite surfing.

Other visitors love the bird watching, fishing, walking and climbing that is on the doorstep in Portland; walks can encompass the iconic 'Portland Bill' lighthouse and quarries.

The stunning 'Church Ope Cove' is just a short walk from the cottage, where you will find the Portland museum and a walkway leading directly to the secluded Cove.

The walkway passes under an imposing stone arch and a little further along are the ruins of Rufus Castle with panoramic views along the Jurassic Coast.

A few minutes down steep steps (150) takes you to Church Ope Cove.

Nearby Easton has good amenities, including two supermarkets, cafes and independent local shops.

A relatively short drive or bus journey away is the main resort of Weymouth, with its award winning long, beautiful, sandy beach, traditional entertainments and good shopping.

Providing an ideal base, this Portland Stone cottage, is perfectly located for exploring the Jurassic coast at any time of the year.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

WAKEHAM, PORTLAND

Portland 2.3 miles; Weymouth 6.8 miles; Dorchester 14.4 miles.

Wakeham is a small hamlet situated in a conservation area on the eastern side of the rugged ‘Isle’ of Portland above the beach at Church Ope Cove. The wide road running through the centre was constructed to accommodate the transport of Portland Stone by horse drawn carts from the numerous local quarries. You can learn all about the stone quarrying at a fascinating exhibition within the local Portland Museum, and then explore the nearby coastal path, a steep walk down to the cove, passing the ruins of the Grade I listed Rufus Castle and St Andrew’s Church along the way. Sheltered Church Ope Cove offers a popular base for diving as there are numerous wrecks to discover off the shore, whilst there are also plenty of opportunities locally for fishing, climbing, sailing and bird watching. Alternatively take the drive down to the very tip at Portland Bill, which juts out into the channel and watch the boats brave their way through the rough waves. Whilst the nearby family friendly, seaside resort of Weymouth offers visitors plenty of family friendly attractions. A most attractive and unique holiday destination at any time of the year.

Notes: Bathroom, slightly smaller than average bath with shower over, hand basin and toilet. Please note there is restricted headroom (6'4'' minimum).
