  • "Whilst, undoubtably, this is a lovely cottage in a fantastic setting there are a few things that prospective renters need to know."

Firstly, the fact that there is no dedicated parking is clearly stated on the listing and in late September we had no problem finding somewhere to park on the streets nearby, however I would anticipate that, the the height of summer, this would become very difficult. Secondly, whilst the kitchen is very well appointed and there are ample crockery, cutlery, glasses etc there is nowhere to store food except the smallish fridge, this means that one has to use the (limited) worktop space. Thirdly, prospective renters with any mild mobility difficulties will struggle to use the bath/shower. This is very deep and narrow necessitating a very high step to get in and out of the bath. Also the fitting of the shower screen, and the lip placed to stop any water dripping onto the floor also makes entry and exit of the bath very difficult.

  • "Much larger than expected."

Parking not a problem. Key safe OPEN button bit stiff, needs drop of oil. Fridge / freezer could do with de-frosting. Poor old "Henry" requires new hose. We found upper sofa lacks neck support. Low beam at bottom of stairs. We're not tall, but we still caught it a couple of times. Overall, pleasant stay, and would consider returning.

  • "When we arrived the keys were in the key safe as promise."

...but the key safe was hanging open. The property is a stunning chocolate box country cottage with many good features (well equipped kitchen, two good sized bedrooms (though without mattress protectors), 2 sitting areas, two toilets, virtually no creaking floorboards and only the staircase for a low beam. A powerful shower with plenty of hot water for 2 guests. A well enclosed garden much enjoyed by our two dogs with good walking in fields nearby. Our own home has no passing traffic and, whilst Church Lane is a quiet country road, it did suffer from abutting the lane and we heard every car that passed from 3am once and 5am onwards on many days! However I found the TV set up to be the most confusing item I have ever encountered on a holiday. I am not sure it is accurate to call it a "Smart TV" - it is a "Genius" as it defeated me every time! It seemed to work solely off the internet but the connection was not strong enough to support it so EVERY programme suffered from buffering - very frustrating! In summary a lovely place to stay but in need of some love and care.

Yard area bit slippery due to moss and we spent week removing spiders and their webs of variously sizes from rooms and walls , definitely nightmare material when spot a huge spider and web at side of bed when plugging charger, Wardrobe hanging space limited due to extra bed in small room wardrobe and black bags in second wardrobe in main room but as only 2 adults and dog not problem but could be if anymore guests staying however, we just used small room as dressing area hanging clothes outside of wardrobe , stairs little steep and daunting not suitable if walking difficulties due to spiral effect but that part of the cottage. Modern kitchen, lovely cool stone floor, plenty utensils for all eventualities, took while to figure oven out but got there in end. Wfi patchy at times but not problematic. Parking often issue till later on as work van and cars from neighbouring resident take up all available space near cottage we had park down end of street most days after returning then moved car when space outside cottage became available. Overall lovely relaxing holiday base to go off exploring gorgeous Dorset and surrounding countryside.

Everything anyone would need was available at the cottage. It was roomy, clean and comfortable. No daily papers were available local, or by foot, as far as we established. Tv very difficult to work if your not ap friendly, however we learnt how to navigate eventually. Nice reasonable size enclosed garden if you have dogs which was a big bonus. Lovely quiet road, Off main roads which was also a big bonus. Parking not to difficult, but was only March, so quiet. Possibly more difficult high season.?! We, give this cottage ten out of ten for our stay.

  • "You ok with this feedback."

..Lychgate Cottage is warm, comfortable and really lovely. Everything you need is provided for(especially the kitchen), it’s clean, the bed is very comfortable and the sofa is great for lounging on. Osmington is a pretty village and the neighbours are great. When arrived we stopped to pick up a few supplies at the newly opened village shop and discovered we had a puncture. The shop keeper was kind and friendly but what was super special was a local couple who took us to their home to try to sort out the tyre. The washing machine door refused to open after a cycle. Sykes Cottages responded extremely quickly and efficiently on the same day and maintained super friendly contact until the problem was resolved We mainly stayed local and can recommend a walk across two fields to The Smugglers Inn, Craig’s Dairy Tea Room and Ringstead Beach. Osmington is an old village not built for cars so parking is tricky but we always found a space. The one thing that would have made our stay even better is an open fire. There’s a beautiful hearth but no insurance paid for open flames but that would be the icing on the cake.

  • "Externally this cottage was very attractive."

However there were some 'comfort' challenges with a low backed sofa in the main sitting room and an inaccessible bath in the bathroom. The main bedroom was very spacious and the bed comfortable for sleep but needs some form of backrest to enable reading in bed( one of the joys of being on holiday). The stairs were a challenge as are stairs in many old cottages. Accessing the TV took some time to figure out, especially with no guidance!!! We won't be visiting again.

The garden was was lovely, the bed was very comfortable, the location was beautiful, the shower was very good and powerful. If the following points were improved, this cottage could be a "Dream Cottage". Unfortunately, for the price, it's not quite there. No easy access to TV viewing. You need relative accounts on your phone to access terrestrial TV. Only one toilet roll provided in each toilet (the very cheapest possible) and the tiniest packets of soap - antibacterial liquid soap should be provided. No condiments in kitchen - at least salt and pepper should be provided. The cups and mugs were very stained which were easily cleaned with the small amount of washing up liquid and 2 dishwasher tablets that were left for us (very mean). A notice was left asking us to remove all our bed linen on our last day. We are on holiday and don't expect to have to do this, the service charge should automatically include this.

Such a great quiet location to access all the walks and close enough to drive down into Weymouth. You can walk to two different pubs, taking in the beautiful sea views down to Smugglers Inn or across fields and under the White Horse to the Springhead. The garden is enclosed and big enough making it perfect for dogs and children. Fully equipped we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and memorable. Despite not having dedicated parking we never struggled for a space on the road outside the property. Such a relaxing and enjoyable stay, we hope to be back again soon.

the garden was very pretty, I wouldnt say it was completely escape proof depending on your dog/kids. but very pretty, the village was also really nice. my partner mentioned the bath was difficult to get in and out of, because of the fixed shower shield. We could't work the towel rails in the downstairs bathroom and upstairs bathroom. But really on the whole it was great. We did not have any problems parking but we did park at the church, eventhough it stated "church parking only" we figured that we would not park there when there was a service or activity at the church as the noticeboard stated when these were. We determined towards the end of the stay that it may not have been the church who put the notices on cars it is most likely the people that live opposite the church as they use the church parking for their own and were not very friendly at all. We could not park in the designated parking space as there was a large van there most of the time. I would say that parking is the main problem with the property but it did not cause us any issues

The space is fantastic, children could roam freely and enjoyed all the games and lego available. They felt safe and comfortable. Things are maybe a little aged, but everything was in working order. Apart from the washing machine - it didn't draw water at the first attempt and when you put it on spin it would draw water! We kind of gave up in the end. We had no problems with parking right next to the cottage's wall that is the side of the dining area or on the street, no one ever made us feel bad about it. Weymouth beach was the main highlight and everything was in driving proximity of 10 minutes. Brilliant holidays in a very nice accommodation!!

  • "The cottage was lovely and quaint but as to be expected with a property of this age there was a smell of damp, lots of cobwebs and no parking."

The listing stated that there was parking in the street but the lane is very narrow, a lot of residents had no drive and more than 1 vehicle. The residents that did have drives had no parking signs opposite their drives as they would not be able to access them if there was a vehicle was parked. On our first night a resident told us to move our car as there were tractor and trailers up and down the lane and our car would get damaged. We parked where he suggested and in the morning we had a note from the parish council on the car asking us not to park there. This cause us some upset!

This two bedroomed chocolate box cottage has so much charm and character.

Admire the beamed ceiling and exposed stonework in the sitting room as you unwind on the corner sofa.

Enjoy the peace of seclusion of the lawned garden at the front of the cottage or on the patio area on warm summer’s evening.

Leading onto a patio garden there is a lower sitting room with another TV and Wii console for games.

Grey stone thatched cottages in this beautiful location are bordered by winding village lanes.

The village is well served with Craig's Farm Dairy where you can buy fresh cow’s milk and their speciality ice-cream - arguably the best in the county!

Adjacent to Lychgate Cottage is St Osmund's Church, sections of which date back to 1200, a must visit location to marvel at local history.

Keen ramblers and walkers alike are spoilt with the choice of discovering the surrounding coast at Ringstead and Osmington Mills.

In the height of the summer the pebbly beach at Ringstead is often quiet.

The Smugglers at Osmington Mills is a famous hostelry serving good food.

About the location

OSMINGTON

Osmington village, sits on the Jurassic coastline of Dorset, just 6 miles from Weymouth with it’s infamous beach and historic harbour and just 11 miles from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Home to the famous Chalk hillside carving of George III on horseback, cut into the hillside to commemorate the Royal visits to Weymouth, this landmark can be seen from miles away. It is also the place that John Constable spent his honeymoon in 1816 and where he completed his painting of Weymouth Bay that now hangs in the National Gallery. The South West Coastal path runs through Osmington Mills, a tiny hamlet on the edge of Osmington. Here many walkers start their coast path walks at the Smugglers inn, where reputedly there are historic connections to smuggling. Be sure to visit to find out all the stories. A short drive will see you reach a local convenience store at Preston. Weymouth offers a larger variety of shopping, eating and entertainment choices.

Please note; the path leading to the cottage is rocky and uneven. The property has a typical narrow staircase. Both of these will need to be considered when booking this property especially for those with mobility issues.
Note: Please note gardener will attend property every two weeks between March - Oct and access will be required to garden.
