  • "A good quality conversion of an old forge."

Well furnished and equipped in a great Central Dorset location. Perfect to explore all that Dorset has to offer from within Hardy's Wessex. We had a great time and would recommend this as a delightful holiday stay. Gates have been added since the website photos.

Different nice attraction within 30 minutes like Durdle Door or the Cerne Giant. The pub is Piddlehinton is excellent. In sum, we had a very good stay in Way's forge

  • "Disappointed with downstairs feeling like it needed a good airing."

Upstairs nice, except foliage at back quite encroaching. Disappointed with outside space being so overgrown and no shepherd hut as in the advertised picture. Thought it was a nice feature, but it wasn’t there. Nowhere tidy to sit outside in the warm weather. Road is quite busy. Great location for visits we wanted to make, but felt a bit let down by a lack of TLC for outside area of the building. Whilst appreciating the age of the building it lacked freshness and cared for appearance expected.

Thank you very much Lorna for your feedback. As you say the little shepherd's hut is away, on a couple of adventures for a few months. It has now been taken out of the photos and details, apologies for the disappointment. We are working away at the outside space whenever possible. The rainy summer does seem to have set off everything growing faster than ever. This Autumn and Winter, once the disturbance to the birds is at a minimum, Richard and I will be coppicing the hazel on the bank for the first time since it was planted. On the most recent changeover day I have cut down the very fast growing willows and some of the hazel outside the main bedroom window so letting more light in. We love our little cottage and are always refreshing things. Thanks again for your feedback Property Owner

  • "We mainly enjoyed our stay at ways forge."

it was quirky and the property had been nicely restored in a rustic way. The cottage seemed smaller than the photos showed but was big enough for three people and a dog. The parking outside was perfectly suitable so not sure what previous reviewers were complaining about. Always reverse in makes it easier to drive out. There was no traffic noise at night, so earplugs are not needed. There is traffic during the day but its a village and so people need to go about their business. it was not an issue. The beds were lovely and comfortable, as were the pillows but the double bed kept making a loud cracking noise when you sat on it or moved. We think the bed slats might need looking at. The shower over the bath worked really well, always plenty of hot water from the immersion heater for three people. There were no wardrobes in the bedrooms but there were two small rails fitted in the double room with some hangers. Our main issue with the property is the outside space. It shows in the outdated photos the area is well maintained with a shepherds hut. The hut has been removed and we understand from a previous review that the owners are establishing a wildlife garden, which we have ourselves. It appears overgrown and unkempt which would make sitting at the table and chairs provided a little difficult. The downstairs had an issue with beetles around the front door and having to remove them each morning but we think this was due to the wildflowers growing outside. We think the photos of the outside should reflect the changes to give people an informed decision when booking. Overall, ways forge is still lovely and a good base for visting. we went to lulworth, weymouth, lyme regis, cerne abbas, poole, bournemouth and dorchester. It was only a shame the weather was not better. The thimble inn is one of the nicest pubs we have been in, for drinks and food and the staff are lovely. very busy at weekends but ok during the week but phone for a table. We enjoyed our stay in spite of these minor issues and would go back.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. The small wildlife garden did get a bit too wild earlier this summer. We have been working on it, getting things under control. The shepherd's hut is away for the rest of the year so the photos will be taken off until its return. As you say the cottage makes a very good base for visiting many beautiful and interesting places in Dorset. Please do come and stay again. Property Owner

  • "Overall we enjoyed our stay at Way's Forge."

However the B3143 through which the property passes was much noisier than we had expected (heavy tractors, farm machinery, lorries etc) so in order to get a proper night's sleep we even had to buy ear plugs in Dorchester. Also, with the forge not having a rear view, we did find it a bit gloomy but this is something which we should have taken into account when booking. The cottage was imaginatively and thoughtfully decorated with a quality HD tv downstairs.

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at our quirky historic cottage . Thank you for your feedback. The road through the village in this rural part of Dorset is used by local farmers so can be a little noisy at certain times of the year. The main room downstairs in our charming little cottage backs onto a bank so has no windows on one end and sidewall but there are windows on the other two walls. We love our cottage and have put a great deal of time into restoring it, trying to keep and add to its character, so we are always pleased to hear that our guests appreciate it too. Really appreciated all of the information provided by the owners regarding local amenities, recommendations and things to do. The cottage was very cosy and had everything we needed to make our stay so memorable. Not that we needed to contact the owners but it was reassuring to know that had there been any issues they were a couple of miles down the road. Reading previous reviews about the parking and how busy the road we were expecting the worse but have to say neither was an issue. The road isn’t that busy and reversing onto the drive made it easy to pull out. We would happily return to Ways Forge if we return to Dorset, its central location meant we could visit all of the places on our list. Many thanks to the owners for making our stay such a special one … even the weather was amazing too.

  • "Whilst the inside accommodation was clean and well presented the beds weren't particularly comfortable."

The king size bed banged everytime we moved or got in and out which woke the other person. The pillows were so hard I had to purchase new pillows the day after we arrived. Also, the underfloor heating didn't work under the living room area and the electric fire didn't have the power to heat the space. Finally, really disappointed with the outside space. It was so overgrown and covered in weeds that it was embarrassing. We were unable to use the outside table or chairs due to how overgrown it was. The trees and hedges need cutting back on the blind bend or at least a mirror installed so you can see if anything is coming before you risk pulling out of driveway. I specifically booked as it said it had a garden/patio and it had neither. I feel the advert needs updating to reflect the lack of outside useable space. This could be a great property if it was kept up together.

Thank you for your feedback and we acknowledge your points, although surprised to see such unfamiliar topics. The mattresses and pillows are all high quality and all new just six months ago. The thermostats are set between 18-21 degrees so as it is mild the underfloor heating won't kick in until the cold weather starts. We are allowing the wildflowers to seed, always a scruffy time but it looks beautiful in Spring and early Summer and the butterflies and bees agree. We will trim the neighbour's hedge back when we cut and rake the outside area next changeover day. We do hope you had a lovely time in the pretty Piddle Valley in beautiful Dorset Property Owner

It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. We had a problem with the heating during our stay, but this was dealt with quickly and resolved. The pub is literally round the corner and so nice, the cottage is in good distance of getting to the coast and attractions available. The only thing i found a little difficult was walking around the village with a pushchair as there are no pavements and some people driving through the village are going very fast. Parking had been mentioned in previous comments, its not your standard parking space granted, but we managed to park and manoevre a vauxhall vivaro van on it with no issues, so in a car it would be easy. My only advice would be is take some shopping with you or make a stop in Dorchester tesco one of the first things you do as the small village shops dont hold much and can be expensive.

Thank you for coming to stay and for your feedback. Locals and visitors alike would all love pavements. We are glad you enjoyed your stay Property Owner

And great area to explore. We enjoyed the full week. Cottage is warm and cozy. Would rate Cottage and our stay as 7/10 Would have been 9 however this review comes with a warning ⚠️ you will not get 2 cars in the parking area. I could just to say get my car in. And had to perform a 5 point turn to get it back out. The warning is beware of pulling out onto the High Street. As the entrance is yards away from a blind bend. Although the speed limit is 30 mph. Many cars drive around the blind bend at closer to 50mph. You realy have to guess if anything is coming. It caused us to have 3 very near misses during the week. Alan

Full of character and very charming with an interesting history . Although on the main road through the village we found this not to be too busy and enjoyed sitting outside in the evening watching the world go by with a beer. In my opinion the cottage is great value for money compared to similar properties in Dorset . Phone signal isn't great but ok in the main bedroom or outside, however we found the WiFi connection to be spot on. The old forge has been renovated very well and love the folder containing the renovation from start to finish. Road is busy outside however that didn't bother us at all. The Thimble in is 5 mins walk excellent home cooked food well worth a visit. The main bedroom is great so large and welcoming, bathroom facilities were great as well. To be honest I have stayed in a few private properties and this is well up there for our liking. If I was going to comment it would be on two things, the waste bin in the bedroom was still full from previous occupants, tissues etc with present conditions I would have liked to see that empty, also not a game changer however if you needed to work on a laptop the internet connection is only a dongle vial a router I could have done with a fibre connection however no way a game changer. I also love the little notes left around the property giving instructions or information, hand writing not typed out(brilliant touch) For me a great little place lovely location I will defiantly return if the owners would have us.

  • "We were disappointed, there was no garden at all, this wasn’t made clear but it should be made absolutely clear that the cottage is situated on a very busy road, with at least 6 vehicles every minute, many lorries van cars etc, the house is right on the road so no sound barrier at all."

We would never have booked it had we known. Many items missing from the inventory, stain on duvet cover, no kitchen roll, no dishcloths no loo roll in downstairs loo, no napkins, no rubber gloves no umbrella, bathroom sink plug full of hairs. I hope that this helps to improve but the major problem was the noise and that should be made clear.

Thank you for your valuable feedback and making the owner aware of the issues during your stay, she did apologise in person for the oversights which rarely happens and replaced items missing items from the inventory. There is now an umbrella and napkins and a variety of sizes of rubber gloves. On our website we do show both garden and road shots and there is a marker the property page for a Google maps which also shows the position of the cottage. We do also provide a red note that the property is located on the main road that runs through the village. It is extremely important to the owner that her guests have an enjoyable stay and is pursuing the council to review the speed limit through the village. • "Your description of this rental was not honest."

The cottage itself wsa superbly equipped and comfortable. What was dishonest was the way you advertised what was outside. You stated there was a garden and a patio, there was not unless you are referring to the 20 square metre lump of rough pasture 3 metres from the road. A road which at times is used as a 'rat ran' to avoid Dorchester which meant that cars sped past the house a few feet away; to suggest that anyone would want to sit ouside to put up with the noise is a joke. As for a patio, I guess you are describing the rough ground next to the 'garden' covered with stones, if you are it is a less realistic as a place to sit and relax as the 'secret garden! Your clever photography, of course, avoided showing how close any thing was to the road. Before arrival I was under the impression that the garden was behind the cottage, another previous guest had also made this assumption , if only it was! Your rating of 5 stars surely implies that there is somewhere outside where people can sit and relax and where traffic noise inside the cottage is not intrusive. The owners are aware of these problems as they have sought to fit triple glazing and erect gates to avoid any future guest being run over! I have previously complained about misleading description of a rental to Sykes ( I think you are one of the same? )They ammended their advertising of that property and you should also modify this one as I believe you are not in accordance with the Trades Description Act. I do not complain about anything unless I am sure there is justification. I expect you to reply to this email soon before I contact my local Fair Trading Agency and the English Tourist Board. Thank you for your valuable feedback and that you felt Way’s Forge was superbly equipped and comfortable. Reviewing the property details, we see our photography shows both garden shots and road. We do have a marker the property page for a Google maps which also shows the position of the cottage. However, we will update the description to inform guests of the road so that we show in both words and photos along with a map position. The road through the village does have a 30mph speed limit. Way's Forge is independently rated as 4 star. The owner takes great pride and effort to make sure her guests have an enjoyable stay and she is going to approach the council in to review the speed limit through the village. • "The cottage itself was beautiful and the conversion had been completed to a high specification."

We left feedback for the owner relating to domestic arrangements eg a very small fridge which was a problem a) in terms of keeping fresh food and b) it’s accessibility. The exterior of the cottage let it down because it was not tidied and also was not secure in terms of our dogs. The property is on a main road and we could not let the dogs into the garden unattended because there is no gate. If the garden was sorted and a gate put in place it would make such a difference. Having said that the garden would still not keep in a determined dog who can jump.

Thank you for your feedback. There is now a full size fridge freezer at the property and a new gate is being installed this week. The owners are looking into more ways of making the garden more secure for dogs. Dogs are very welcome at Way’s Forge and the Piddle Valley area has some wonderful walks. There is now a lovely little shepherds hut in the garden for the use of the cottage residents and the owners are working on the garden. Property Owner

Some elements downstairs could be updated but overall fine. The towels provided were poor - all were very old and only one that was a bath towel (even then not a very generous one) and three small hand towels. Not ideal for 2 guests and I think more is expected these days. Wonderful to be able to walk to the local pub which was lovely, friendly and great food!

  • "Rustic, cosy cottage in a central location for touring the Jurassic Coast and countryside."

Bedrooms and bathroom upstairs had good facilities and enough cupboards and drawers for storage. Under floor heating was comfortable with ability to control thermostats. There is no dishwasher which is fine but the property could do with some more crockery.... eg bowls, pasta bowls, small plates. The fridge is far too small and at a low level. The kitchen could accommodate a larger, upright fridge and this will improve the comfort of buying in food and drink to last a few days, especially when weather is bad and you wish to enjoy the property. I read through some of the previous comments from guests and one person, some time ago, recommended a hairdryer as she had forgotten hers. I still didn’t see one in the property. Garden.... although it states clearly that the garden isn’t enclosed, it wasn’t clear to us that the garden is on the side (rather than the back) of the property and facing the very busy road. The traffic noise at peak times in the mornings and evenings was annoying.... could the windows at the front be triple glazed?? On arrival, we found rubbish in the bins inside the property and the outside bins were overflowing as they had not been put out on the Thursday night by previous guests. We arrived on the Saturday. The bins were attracting flies. Also, we were not impressed with the cleanliness of the property for our arrival. We found dust and coins, paper clips on the bureau and cobwebs everywhere and when our puppy lost her ball under the cupboards and drawer units in the lounge and bedroom, the dirt, mess and hair found on the floor was disgusting.

Thank you for your feedback and it’s great that you found Way’s Forge to be a cosy rustic cottage with good facilities and storage, along with comfortable underfloor heating. With so many excellent reviews we are sorry that the cleaning was not perfect on this occasion, which is an isolated case, however, the owner would have been keen to arrange a revisit immediately from the cleaning team had we been made aware, using the details we provide. I am sorry that you did not locate the hairdryer which is kept in a drawer in the main bedroom and unfortunately due to being a very old building dating back to 1830s, triple glazing is not a possibility. We do hope that both our description and photos do show the property and its gardens as clearly as possible. We look forward to welcoming you to another Dream Cottages holiday soon. Property Owner

The property

Set in the charming village of Piddlehinton, Way’s Forge is a beautifully renovated old blacksmith’s workshop. The property dates back to the 1830’s and was a working forge run by five generations of the Way family.

Way’s Forge offers plenty of original character and is perfect for those looking to stay somewhere full of charm and history. The cottage suits a couple or a small family as it sleeps up to three people.

The stout beams, stone walls and electric log burner create a great atmosphere and the thoughtful and creative use of bygones, such as the tin trunk coffee table, add to the warm personality of the cottage.

The first floor offers two bedrooms, with very comfortable beds, and a bathroom, whilst the large open plan living area with underfloor heating on the ground floor has all you need for a relaxing holiday. Way’s Forge sits in the wonderful Piddle Valley, a great base from which to explore the Dorset countryside and you can start with walks right from the village itself.

The Millennium Green, a playground and picnic area by the river, is a short stroll down a path opposite the cottage.

There are many tracks on the hills around the village where you can walk your dogs. Typical of many village blacksmiths Way’s Forge lies in the heart of Piddlehinton on the main street, a two minute walk from the award winning Thimble Inn.

This thatched 18th century pub and restaurant with a riverside garden serves great food. The pretty village of Cerne Abbas is in the next valley with the intriguing chalk hillside figure of the Cerne Giant.

Thomas Hardy’s cottage, Thorncombe Woods and Puddletown Forest are nearby.

There are, of course, many other lovely places to explore in Dorset. A short drive away is the county town of Dorchester, with shopping, restaurants, cinemas, museums and other places of interest.

Brewery Square and Poundbury are interesting and exciting local developments. The seaside town of Weymouth with its sandy beach and entertainment for everyone is just 14 miles away.

Lulworth Cove, the arch of Durdle Door and the rest of the stunning Jurassic Coast are close-by.

Way's Forge is located next to the main road that runs through the village and does not have an enclosed garden.
