  • "We have been staying at Sea King House since 2013."

It has the most amazing views, good facilities, a lovely cafe just opposite which does open at 9am, but is so quiet you wouldn’t know. The facilities are good everything in the kitchen you would want, decent size fridge freezer, microwave lots of storage. Bathroom/shower (all in one) could be better as there is limited space and is quite difficult to get in and out, sofa although looks fab isn’t the most comfy but those are the only semi- criticisms.

  • "Negatives: Bathroom door lock not working - reading reviews this was reported over 2 years ago!"

! Please fix it. Cafe opens everyday at 8am so no lay ins! Needs a deep clean, i swept floor and bought wipes to clean them. Lots of cobwebs esp in main bedroom. Alot of cutlery/crockery etc was not clean. I think alot of the cleaning is left to the guests who are checking out and minimal cleaning done after by the rental company. Shower is difficult to get in/out of due to fixed curved glass shower screen and position of toilet. Access to garden is through 3 doors - through garage and utility room on the ground floor away from living area, which is worth bearing in mind if you are bringing dogs. Washing machine was filthy and i had to clean it before we could use it. Mattresses not good and really need replacing esp 1 of the single beds in twin room. Bedside lamp cant be used as no plug near by in twin room. No cutlery basket in dishwasher and plates are too tall so they have to be stacked at an angle otherwise it wont wash properly. Sofa v un-comfy as were the dining chairs. Anti-social behaviour in park opposite with large group of youths playing loud music, singing, shouting, swearing. This went on for hours and i did actually report to police. The road is v busy and noisy and so disturbed sleep every night even with windows shut which is not ideal in August! Attached to neighbours both sides and sound proofing is non existent. Positives: Views are stunning and were a huge reason we booked this place. Off street parking for 2 cars (1 car in garage) also meant storage for kayak. Allowed pets and had a half decent garden. Proximity to a stunning little beach. Pretty gardens over the rd and cafe for ice creams/coffee/snacks! Rodwell trail almost on doorstep. Could be amazing if a few changes were made!!

  • "A fantastic property in a perfect location - the view from the balcony is superb."

When we arrived, there was a dreadful smell in the kitchen - although the bin had been emptied, there was what looked like to be vomit on the inside of the lid and bin which had not been cleaned. Although we wiped this clean with disinfectant we decided to relocate the bin to the utility room as it still smelled. The kitchen floor needed a clean as this also smelled nasty. We did raise this with the agent and suggest that a deep clean should be carried out. The property itself is lovely and has good facilities, however I would recommend the following: Bathroom - access to the shower is very difficult, even for an abled bodied person. I recommend that handles are installed to assist getting in and out the bath. Stairs - these are very steep and there is no rail at the top of either set of stairs. As a Health and Safety issue there should be rails installed. Despite the above, we really enjoyed our stay and would be looking to return in the future.

Looking out the windows it has a wonderful wow factor. Everything we needed was there: kitchen utensils etc. fridge and freezer a good size. Utility room and washer/dryer amazing. The cafe opposite was open everyday so we had lots of fresh coffee. . Cleaning could have been a little better. Only thing that would really improve would be a grab handle as you get out the bath/shower as it’s a very high sided bath and there’s nothing to steady yourself when you get out and there is limited space, and a shower door that can be pushed back against the wall so you don’t have to climb in the bath to push the plug in.

After numerous calls to Sykes cottages requesting to change our deposit over to another property, because we read more recent reviews about how difficult it was to get in & out of the shower in the bath. Firstly, customer services denied any such reviews, but after talking to another person, the reviews were noted!!! As my husband is 83 & myself 79 (with arthritis I did foresee problems, which there duly was! After 2 days we couldn’t go any longer not having a shower!. The week was a celebration of 60 yrs of marriage, so thought it VERY unkind of Sykes Cottages not to allow us to change over our deposit over to another property of yours. I had given plenty of time before we were due to arrive. Soooo disappointed, although we did find another ‘very nice’ property to stay at BUT it has cost us a lot of money & being pensioners you can imagine how difficult that is! If it hadn’t been our special anniversary we would have come home. As you can understand we won’t be using Sykes Cottages again & will put a review on TrustPilot when I have time. Mrs Linda Dunn

Great base for exploring the area. Two lovely small beaches 5 min walk to left or right of property. Little touches like tea/coffee/milk and biscuits were appreciated. Some negatives, a creaky floor in the kitchen, the curtains in the main bedroom could do with replacing as they are worn. The property is by a park cafe and noise from the cafe woke us up every morning as we had to keep the windows open every night due to the hot weather. Maybe a fan could be provided in the room to avoid having to open windows. No BBQ in the garden so we brought our own, the garden is small but nice and shady in the evening for sitting out. Overall, we really enjoyed staying at this property.

On the whole was in good condition the presentation of the house on first arrival was stunning. The pet gate was really useful, our Border Collie loved to sit and watch the world from the balcony, we would definitely come back. A few small areas for cleaning nothing worth writing about. The bath/shower was the trickiest a really small space to get in and out, trying to push the plug down to run a bath provided a few smiles. None of the above would prevent us returning.

It is a 20 minute walk in to the town centre and there are plenty of things to do in the area. We know this area from years of visiting Weymouth so we were very comfortable staying here. Views from the property are amazing with a very well kept public park directly in front if the property. A super cafe attracts locals, passing walkers and cyclists so great for people watching as well as the views. 2 small beaches 100 m away and a 20 minute stroll into Weymouth. Well positioned for walking as it sits right on the Rodwell trail. We would stay here again.

Its spaceous and has great views. We loved the balcony, the location and little touches like a water bowl left ready for our dog as well as tea towel/washing up liquid/coffee/milk. It has some annoying things like the bathroom door lock not working, a creaky floor in the kitchen and the main bedroom door did not shut fully. Also lots of cob webs in the balcony and rusty garden furniture in the garden. The property is by a park cafe and noise from the cafe woke us up in the morning. At night it was very quiet with poor street lighting. Overall, we really enjoyed staying there because inside it was beautiful and there was plenty of space, including a small garden for the dog. However, the antisocial behaviour in the park across the road late at night and during the early hours of the morning was terrible. • "Sea King has positive and negative points."

Positive being, a good location, comfortable surroundings, lovely views, the balcony is great and gets the sun for most of the day, bed comfortable and clean (for us), modern bathroom and good heating when required. It was a pleasure to arrive at a nicely decorated accommodation and new furniture, not as per photos on the website. Unfortunately there are a few negatives but these can be addressed easily, the main one being the overall cleanliness. The house needs a full / deep spring clean including utility. Back garden, table / chairs are so uncomfortable and rusty, so uninviting to sit late afternoon when you lose the sun from the front balcony, the garden area itself needs a clean and tidying up. Front balcony would benefit from comfortable chairs and a small secure table, difficult in the space given but this can be done. The windows inside and out had not been cleaned for along time, given the wonderful view I would have thought this would be looked at each week. We would consider staying again and felt the few negative points lets the house down but this should not distract anyone from staying here.

I have no idea how you managed to get it up the stairs! The house is in a great position for walking into Weymouth. We found at least four different routes, including one along the beach. Only complaint is that, while stylish, the sofas were very hard. The garden was useful for drying wet beach clothes and the balcony was great for breakfast - it almost felt like we were on a Mediterranean break! The beautiful gardens opposite were just lovely and a hive of activity throughout the day. We used the Rodwell trail just behind the house a quick 15 minutes into weymouth one way and to chenille beach the other. Perfect location opposite Sandsfoot Castle, with a sea view and only a few minutes walk to a sandy beach. Rodwell trail was behind the house - flat walk/cycle into Weymouth or towards the bridge over to Portland. Loved the balcony - sun trap and lovely place to relax and watch the world go by (well other holidaymakers!). House was clean - we had been concerned given other reviews. Furniture on the balcony looked new and was ideal. Good to have parking. Our only negative feedback was that the second and third bedrooms had flimsy curtains which let in light in the mornings (teenager not impressed with early wake-ups!).

  • "The holiday home has amazing views looking over to Portland and it would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the cleanliness of the house."

It was very clear that dogs had been staying because there were dog hairs under beds and in corners which could have quite easily been cleaned. Our dog doesn’t shred so we were not used to this. The sofas were a bit grubby but bedding and towels were all perfectly clean and so was the bathroom and toilet. We couldn’t get the gas hob to work and never got a call back about this so we made do. The balcony which I thought was a definite selling point in this property could have had more comfortable seating outside but they were adequate. Same with the garden furniture which we didn’t use as they were a bit old and needed updating. Nearby there is a little beach and it’s a perfect location to go exploring. Also across the road is the castle ruin and beautiful garden which can be a good place to take the dog out quickly. The cafe across the road was also lovely to crab a coffee first thing in the morning although they can be a bit noisy setting up. Just a few finishing touches and cleanliness could make this house perfect!

  • "The location and views are great."

Reasonable walk/quick drive into Weymouth (plenty of parking there but make sure you download the Just Park app or carry lots of change). The attractive park opposite is larger than it appears in the photos. Path to a sandy beach (new steps) only a few minutes' walk. Well-equipped kitchen. Possibly the most comfortable beds I have ever had in a holiday property. Excellent shower pressure. On the downside, as some others have noted, the property does need a bit of updating. The surfaces of the kitchen cupboard doors were badly cracked; the microwave had scratches inside that made me hesitate to use it; minutes after we arrived, the plumber arrived to prop up the wall-hung toilet which was coming away from the wall, damaging the tiles; the leather sofas were cracked (but comfortable). Various lightbulbs needed to be replaced, the pull cord for the bathroom light was broken. The single bedroom was cosy but tiny. The twin room had a lamp but no socket near the beds. Access to the second toilet is via the entrance hall, through the integral garage and then through the utility room - not very practical when you have small children. The driveway is very short and so you have to park partly under the balcony, in the entranceway to the garage, which is extremely narrow. Something to bear in mind if you have a wide car. Despite these issues, we would still recommend this property based on comfort, views and location.

The integrated garage is a bonus and can easily fit a large car. The master bedroom was a good size and the bed was very comfortable. There are some negatives though. The house was not cleaned very well. There was a lot of dust and hair and the floors had sticky dirt patches and there were several pieces of plastic, one piece my dog nearly ate which could have had serious consequences! The kitchen utensils etc all needed a good clean also. As well as cleanliness, the sofas are a bit shabby, not very comfortable and one side of the reclining sofa was broken. A decent set of balcony chairs and table is needed also. In all, a good house but needs a bit of a spuce up and a good clean.

Another issue (and this is purely personal so may not bother others) is the leather furniture in the lounge isn't very comfortable/cosy, finally the master bathroom needs a deep clean). About the location

CASTLE COVE

Weymouth 2.1 miles; Dorchester 8.8 miles; Lyme Regis 28.5 miles.

Castle Cove is a firm favourite with locals, sitting alongside the Rodwell trail area, Castle Cove Beach is usually uncrowded, and offers safe bathing from its gently sloping shoreline. There are two main beach areas, Castle Cove, new steps to the beach opened early in 2019, and Sandsfoot beach, both with soft golden sand and the vibe of the best kept secret. Sandsfoot castle is just two minutes’ walk from the beach where you will find castle ruins, pretty, award-winning gardens and a small café, offering snacks, drinks and ice-creams. Accessed off Old Castle Road in Weymouth, this area is a real treat for those who want to be away from the buzz and bright lights of the traditional Weymouth Seafront, and yet close enough to venture there when they choose. When you are on the beach you could be forgiven for thinking you are miles from town, and yet you are only within easy reach of the old Harbour and access to Weymouth town centre. If you want to know where the locals would recommend you spend your beach days, then Castle Cove and Sandsfoot beaches are it.
