  • "Wonderful view of Swanage from the rear of the property."

A little tired in places with some minor maintenance required - toilet flushes and blind in top bedroom mainly. Well equipped. All in all excellent value for money.

  • "We have really mixed opinions on the property."

Positives: very well equipped, spacious and lovely to have the outdoor space. The teens really appreciated the ping pong table and table football. The loft room was really lovely but we have some concerns with fire safety listed later. Negatives We have put in a complaint about an incident that occurred on Weds 21st but received no response yet. Workmen appeared on ladders outside the property, our teen daughter was alone and had just showered and it was highly alarming for her to have unplanned workmen outside her room looking in. Also inappropriate for this to have happened without notification. There did not appear to be a fire alarm on the top floor of the property. The doors to the property do not appear to be fire safe standard for a property split across 4 floors. This presents a fire risk for the owners and any residents staying at the property so we would urge this to be rectified immediately. We have regularly stayed in holiday lets and were very surprised at the amount of personal owner items left at the property. It was literally crammed full of things. The door handle to the loft room needs fixing as it was rattling through the night. The blind in the loft room close to the door does not work. The appliance instruction’s were not in the kitchen and we could not find them. The toilet flush (floor which has three bedrooms) was very temperamental and needs fixing or replacing soon. The internal sitting room door is split and needs replacing to meet fire safety standards. There was a lot of rubbish left in the garden but that could have just been left by previous residents and missed in the cleaning.

  • "This is a great house for a large group visiting Swanage."

The sitting room had plenty of space and, to be able to step out onto the balcony to sit and enjoy the wonderful view and watch the steam trains pass by, was bliss. There's an eclectic mix of furniture and loads of old books and artworks which made our stay interesting, the house had a lovely homely feel and we all (young and old) had a great holiday.

  • "We all enjoyed our stay at Bay View, very comfortable and in a great location, lovely views, convenient to the town and its beaches."

We found things generally clean and tidy but we do think the property would benefit from a deep clean, as we found a fair amount of cobwebs in many of the rooms and there was almost an infestation level of moths! Also it would be helpful if there were labels on the various bins, indicating what each should contain to avoid mixing recyclables. Overall, an excellent property which we would happily return to or recommend to others!

  • "1. I think it would be helpful to state the property is over 4 floors."

    2. Cleanliness....on arrival there were a lot of hairs in the plug of the loft room shower. Some cutlery was not clean....dishwasher's fault I guess! 3. I was surprised to find started packs of frozen food in the freezer, and lots of food in the tall drawer in the kitchen. It wasn't a problem....but a note to say whether the food was for our use or not would be helpful. 4. If possible..more room in the kitchen cupboards to put food would be helpful. 5. The mugs were a really nice selection. 6. It would be helpful to say where to find the recycling and rubbish bins....I thought it was one left on the street initially...then later discovered the right ones on the basement level patio. 7. We spent ages hunting for the hoover...more specific instructions on which cupboard to look in would be helpful. 8. Having a key safe is brilliant. 9. The location is excellent....10 to 15 mins to walk into town 10. The toilet seat in the 1st floor bathroom was quite wobbly. 11. The balcony table and chairs, with seat cushions hanging in the lounge, were great....amazing view. 12. Our children loved the TV and netflix 13. The folder with instructions for appliances was excellent. 14. The washing line was great 15. Overall we had a really nice stay. Thank you for sharing your property with us. We love Swanage and have visited many times. Would definitely consider staying in this property again.

  • "I'd have given the cottage a much higher rating if our concerns had been addressed properly while we were on holiday."

I'm used to cottages where the owner can be contacted directly while you're at the property and our past experiences of any issues have been very positive - with owners responding quickly and helpfully. This time was quite different. It's such a pity. as Bay View has the potential to be absolutely top class - it's in a fantastic position, has lots of space, and could have been amazing, if attention had been paid to the all-important details. First impressions were poor - dead plants in pots on the front doorstep, cigarette ends on the balcony, crumbs and something orange and runny in the bottom of the fridge, a very messy patio (with more dead plants, pots full of stagnant water, weeds growing between the paving stones and random items strewn around) and piles of animal faeces in the lower garden/orchard area. The inside of the house (apart from the fridge) was clean and well appointed. There were fresh towels and bedding on all the beds and the rest of the kitchen and the other rooms looked freshly dusted and hoovered. Lots of the cupboards had stuff in, and there were a significant number of items stored under the beds, which we're also not used to in a holiday let. Because of the mess on the patio, I contacted the number supplied on the booking confirmation (assuming this would be the owner) - this was answered by someone from Dream Cottages, who, despite being friendly and helpful, was apparently refused permission by the owner to tidy the patio and put stuff away! We were particularly disappointed, as we'd specifically chosen a property with a garden, the weather was lovely and it would have been nice to be able to use the patio and the orchard area for table tennis and ball games with the children- but for different reasons, both were unsuitable for us to be able to do this. And not because of the uneven terrain, which I seem to remember was mentioned in the property description. We booked with you because of very good experiences of Sykes in the past and thought we could trust that the whole property would be of a good standard. Sadly this wasn't the case.

  • "Really good location and property."

Plenty of space and storage. Just need to make visible how to get hot water in taps. Vacuum cleaner was full so need to be emptied. Fridge water dispenser is not safe for kids. It made a mess in the kitchen when our kids started pressing those pedals. tumble dryer was not turning on. Also loads of stuff under beds and cupboards. Remove them to make space and also looks nice and easy to maintain. Overall loved the place.

  • "Lovely property, but a little tired and felt a bit squished."

Also the front room, although nice, the sofa was hard and uncomfortable, so we struggled as a big group to feel relaxed.

Thank you for your comments and I hope you had a good time. I'm so sorry you found the sofa hard. It is very new. You can adjust the back of each section separately to make it recline to suit each person, and it also has a footstool, so we hope that it suits both recliners and those who prefer something more supportive. The house was completely freshly repainted in September, so I am sorry it looked tired to you. To us, it seems bright and clean. Of course, we welcome comments from our guests so that we can plan good improvements as necessary, and we will, of course, bear yours in mind." Property Owner

It was very relaxing. I don't think the owner needs to change anything....it's perfect.

  • "A fabulous home that exceeded expectations."

(The photos do not do this house justice!). A floorplan in the details would be really useful as we had 5 young children (7,5,3,3,3) any younger and having someone in the basement would not have worked. Without the tumble dryer it was impossible to wash and dry bedding (February) so had to hunt to find spare for the top room after a spillage. Leaving a spare set out would be helpful. Location is great - short downhill walk/scoot to the beach and the house is really well equipped. Swanage beach is amazing - bucket and spade hire, fish and chips and a great play park too. The only change I would make is to swap one of the doubles for a twin. It would have helped us but I also think would increase your rentals as would suit more people. A really great (far too short) break. Thank you

Thank you very much for your encouraging feedback. We are delighted that you had a lovely holiday and liked the house as much as we do. I'm so sorry you needed to hunt for sheets. We were advised that for clarity of laundry supply and billing, we should take spare sheets away, and that Dream Cottages are always happy to come and change linen for you as necessary mid-holiday. (But I'm very glad you found ours!) Perhaps it's a good idea to change a double bed for twin beds. We'll certainly bear it in mind. Do come again! Property Owner

About the location

SWANAGE

Wareham 9.7 miles; Poole 20 miles.

The small, family-friendly seaside resort of Swanage is situated at the eastern end of Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast, on the celebrated Isle of Purbeck and is probably best known for its wonderful, gently shelving golden sands. The little town offers visitors plenty of shops, good pubs and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, and is also well known for its annual jazz festival, which takes place each July. The attractive, Victorian wooden pier offers a great place for a stroll or try fishing, and often used a departure point for divers, it’s a wonderful place to watch the world pass by. The historic Swanage Railway has its terminus in the town and regular nostalgic steam engine trips take tourists for a picturesque 6-mile journey, chugging through lovely countryside to stop just beyond the romantic ruin of Corfe Castle. Nearby Durlston Country Park offers a lovely day out with spectacular coastal walks, dolphin spotting and wildlife watching, together with comfortable viewing points and a well-stocked cafe for a treat after all the fresh air. Take the short drive to Studland, which has one of the finest beaches in the country, surrounded by heathland, together with the regular chain ferry, which crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour to Sandbanks. This truly is a delightful holiday destination at any time of the year.
