  • "We did find that the radiators downstairs didn't come on despite the rooms feeling cold, and the heating coming on upstairs."

As there are no controls in this property it is difficult to manage. We found we did need to use the free standing fan heater to warm up downstairs

  • "The cottage was very clean with comfortable beds and good showers."

Excellent location with good food at the Castle Inn less than 5 mins away and the superb Limestone Hotel Restaurant across the road. Beach and Coast Path very close. The main inaccuracy is with the outdoor seating area - the photos on the website do not show that it is next to the Calor Gas tank or that the adjoining cottage can park their car right next to it ( luckily the couple staying at Forge Cottage kindly parked in next space. It was also not warm enough to eat outside in the evening). The addition of bedside lamps in the upstairs bedroom and modern LED lightbulbs that give out a decent level of light would also be useful.

  • "We had a thoroughly enjoyable week in Little Forge."

I was very concerned by a recent review regarding cleanliness. However, despite it being initially difficult to contact Sykes Cottages via the website, after speaking to the lovely Kelsey I was reassured. The cottage was very clean and very well presented. But the beds were very hard as previously reported. The location is excellent. An ideal central point for exploring the area. I can recommend the bus service, it's really useful. Overall our stay was really positive. Many thanks.

Thank you for your feedback and I am glad you had a lovely stay. Based on recent feedback we have ordered new mattresses for the two double beds in the cottage. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is pretty and set in a beautiful village."

On first inspection, things appeared to be quite good, but as the week progressed a number of things took the edge off our stay. The beds were quite uncomfortable, poor mattresses and could have done with a king size bed. During the week, the smell of drains and damp in the bathroom and ensuite got worse and worse. Cleaning was only superficial and basic around the house. The bathrooms and kitchen had been cleaned, vacuuming and floors okay, but there were cobwebs everywhere and dirt and dust on the skirting board and behind cupboards. The whole house needed a proper clean! The other big issue was our neighbours in the house next door who lost their power. It turned out that their electricity supply came from the distribution board in our house. They told us what the situation was, the power tripped on a number of occasions, so my husband and I had to keep an eye on their power, to make sure that we could switch it back on if needed. Definitely not ideal! When the power goes off in the neighbouring cottage, then Little Forge loses it's wi-fi. Also, we had no control over the central heating system as the boiler was sited in the other property, so that needs to be taken into consideration. Given all of the above, we wouldn't stay there again, or recommend it to others.

Thank you for providing your feedback which we take very seriously. We will investigate and rectify. Property Owner

  • "Very nice property."

Very comfortable and ideally situated near to coast and several places of interest. Two things that would have been nice. The outdoor seating was in a car park next to a gas tank and we were not allowed in the garden. Also it was very hot when we were there, especially in the upstairs bedroom and a fan would have been appreciated.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately this cottage does not have use of the garden but there is a seating area provided. As soon as we were notified about the fan we purchased one and so this is now at the cottage for future guests. Property Owner

The cottage is in a good location, comfortable and generally warm although the heating does not come on until 5pm and you have no control over the boiler - we needed to light the stove on returning home at 4pm as little chilly The downstairs bedroom although spacious and comfortable is overlooked as it is the thoroughfare for the cottage you are attached to - the windows are casement- only one opens -a bit of a security risk if you do open it and has no stay on it and is constantly being blown wide open by the wind The dining area is just a small round table in corner of lounge and a bit cramped Parking bit difficult due to depth of gravel and position of spaces It would be nice to have been provided with a dishcloth - there is a brush but no cloths for wiping surfaces

It was in a brilliant location - away from the crowds but easily to walk to Lulworth Cove. Just a couple of things to feed back: There were only two bowls (cereal type). This was not a problem for us, but would be for a family. (We did leave a note for the housekeeper) The bathroom downstairs had a strange smell to it! It might have been a damp smell, but it was quite strong when we had been out for the day and the windows had been closed. The fan did not seem particularly effective. The other slight disappointment was the patio area, which we had assumed was out the back. It felt as if we were sitting in the car parking area and we were in full view of the people staying in the other property. We therefore didn’t really use it. Apart from that, we had a wonderful holiday and would use the property again.

It was clean, and generally well equipped. We were fortunate with the weather so didn’t get to try out the log burner. • "Little Forge is in a great position, being within walking distance of Lulworth Cove and Durdledoor."

When travelling out by car numerous places of interest are within reach, particularly if you are a National Trust member (which we are). Locally, we ate out at the Limestone Hotel and the Castle Inn, lovely venues serving excellent food. The beds were a little firm for our tastes and my husband, being 6' 2", found them a little short, particularly since they had tailboards. A zip and link bed in one of the bedrooms would be a great asset. The outdoor seating area for Little Forge is adjacent to the parking area. The property adjoining us had sole use of the large garden. If the garden area could be reconfigured to allow access to Little Forge it would add to the appeal of the cottage. One final point - the parking area for the neighbouring cottage is outside the living area window which reduces the light and detracts from the view. This review may seem overly negative but we had a lovely week in the cottage and would happily recommend it.

Thank you for your feedback and I am glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. I was dismayed to hear the comment about the parking, where the other cottage had parked in front of the lounge window. This is not the designated parking area for that cottage and that area in front of Little Forge lounge is supposed to be kept clear. We will see if we can make the parking clearer. Property Owner

A good location with 2 pubs in walking distance a local shop and lots to do in the local area. One main gripe would be the TV in the lounge, it didn’t work at all whilst we were then and that was disappointing, at £800 a week a good working TV should be supplied. Other than that it was brilliant and would highly recommend. Another minor point would be maybe supplying a couple of bin bags as we had to go and buy some

Thank you for your feedback and I am very sorry the TV was not working, I wish you had made us aware on arrival as we could have had this fixed straight away. A subsequent guest has made us aware and we immediately got an engineer out and bought a new TV and so it is now all working. We will also take note of the comment around bin bags. Property Owner

It’s controlled by a thermostat next door so if they got warm they would turn the heating down, first few days heating was hit and miss until engineer came, the housekeeper was very obliging to get it sorted as quickly as possible so don’t have complaints there as I was informed as to situation. The wood stove kept the room warm lovely. But first thing on a morning it was cold till heating got sorted. The heating system could do with an upgrade and separate thermostat for each property. Besides that the stay was an enjoyable one and always looked forward to getting back to the property on an evening.

Reported on the Friday night and earliest somone could attend was Monday 3-4pm. Think it might have been dead mouse somewhere. The kitchen had very litte ventilation - we were able to clear smell by opening kitchen door and outside door. Once fire was lit hid smell. Cleaner tried drain cleaner on the Tuesday. Seemed to help but smell was back Thursday. Cleaner was very helpful and the owner did say they could move us but that was halfway through the week. Felt that Dream Cottages should have been in contact also.

We are very sorry that the smell in the kitchen affected your stay, we did try and get someone out to take a look but were advised on the Sunday that the smell had gone. On the Friday we had a deep clean and found that it was a blockage in the kitchen sink drain and not a dead mouse. This has now been fully cleaned and cleared and the smell has gone. Property Owner

We were disappointed to find the oven was not very clean and the tray had not been washed after use. There is a very musty smell as you walk into the cottage, it was fine for us as the weather was warm and we were able to keep the windows and door open in the evenings, but if it was wet it would not be pleasant (is there a damp problem) It should be explained that the sitting area is in the space for car parking, but it does get the afternoon sun. We had a lovely time, the village is pretty and close to the Cove with plenty of choice for eating out (book before you go as very busy) there is a useful little Londis shop very close by. We discovered Cook ready meals were sold in the Spar in Wool, excellent quality. There are great coastal walks, obviously!

Thank you for your valuable feedback, I was sorry to hear the oven was not very clean, we have raised this with the housekeeper. We have not had any other feedback about a musty smell and I don't believe the cottage has a damp problem. Property Owner

  • "We found broken and dirty glasses on arrival."

We expected to have an umbrella as one was shown in the literature. Both of these were rectified after several telephone calls and 48 hours later. Some areas of the property were very dusty and full of spiders webs. We were asked to leave the accommodation clean and tidy, even to the point we were told where the vacuum cleaner was kept and to put bedding in bags provided. Although there was plenty of cleaning products there were no cleaning cloths or any kind of refuse or laundry bags. We consider being asked to clean the cottage an imposition bearing in mind that we could not get into the property until 5pm, we were required to leave at 10am which indicates that the property cleaning service was given plenty of time to complete the work. We also consider the price we paid would cover the cost of cleaning.

Thank you for your feedback, we apologise that there was no garden umbrella, after a call to the housekeeper this was provided immediately. She also replaced the glasses you pointed out. We do not ask guests to the clean the cottage, only to leave it in a tidy state. We also do not require guests to strip the bedding, I believe this was a hang over of the Covid rules imposed last year but we will make sure that reference to this is removed. Property Owner

Lovely location. Just let down by little things like dishes and glasses not being particularly clean but back in the cupboard, I suppose hard for the cleaners to check everything so more down to other guests but some things not even looking like they've been through the dishwasher. Cobwebs everywhere, of course that's nothing to ruin the holiday just suggestive of a bit more care needing to be taken. Stained toilets - look like they just needed a good scrub so couldn't understand why it hasn't been done. Fridge ice dispenser not working, oven taking a lifetime to heat up etc etc, just a build up of small things. Lots of hand soap and cleaning products everywhere which was handy with the pandemic. Strange that all the books, games, DVDs, flyers etc etc were all there given the pre arrival email that suggested we should be cautious enough to bring our own pillows etc and that extra bits would be removed from the house. We did have a wonderful holiday and were perfectly comfortable. Just seemed like a bit more care could be taken over the house because it has the potential to be totally stunning rather than 'alright'.

and there is plenty to do and see in the surrounding area to meet all tastes. Unfortunately there are detracting issues with the cottage, for example the heating is controlled from the cottage next door, we visited in one of the hottest weeks of the year but the heating was on and off for hours at a time and at odd times - I did try to turn off all the valves at the radiators as suggested but two were seized and couldn't be moved. The two cottages are divided at one point internally by a single wooden door - unfortunately this does nothing to insulate the noise from the other cottage, fortunately that was only occupied for a long weekend while we were there. The cottage is rated as 5 star and in our opinion 3 perhaps 4 would be more appropriate.

Lulworth Cove has many little café’s and beachside shacks serving local seafood, ice cream and other delights, as well as several restaurants and pubs from which to choose. There is an Lulworth estate information centre which offers an insight into how the cove and Durdle door were formed and Jurassic history of the region. If you tire of Cove and cliff top walks then Lulworth Castle is a short drive away and offers another glimpse at some more recent history, along with Tyneham Village, and Corfe Castle.
