  • "Excellent property for large family or friends get together."

Well equipped kitchen and dining room for entertaining. Good facilities to keep everyone occupied and entertained (stunning natural pool).Cosy and warm in colder season despite age and size of property. Fabulous bathrooms but some other rooms were a bit tired and could do with some TLC. Overall the house felt very homely and comfortable.Dogs were welcome, which was a real bonus. Interesting history of the house and area with plenty of accessible places to visit.

Only thing that niggled us was the amount of dust in places, which should not be if cleaned fully mainly in bedrooms this is nothing major but a no to one of our party who is a domestic cleaner. Overall nice house and grounds and house you feel at home in.

  • "Lovely grounds but everything about the house needs work."

There are no comfortable seats for people as all the sofas have no springs left. Same for most of the chairs. The room of the couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary had no working shower. The games room needs modernising especially the equipment.

Thank you so much for letting us know. I'll investigate the shower (which absolutely should be working) and sofas immediately. EDIT: Thank you again for flagging this. The shower was in fact brand new that week and there had clearly been and issue with installation which is now fixed; and there are now 3 new sofas in the sitting room Property Owner

  • "A generously sized House in a great position and generally well presented: only the games room was messy and poorly squared off; there is too much games kit available so that made it seem over equipped and untidy : the exact opposite was the pool area/facility which was v well presented, and despite our weather could be better advertised as a real asset: the spacious garden was good, as was the tennis court."

Internally the house looked worn but well loved and welcoming; beds were comfortable; the kitchen, lounge, and dining rooms were very adequate for our group of 16 ; the pianos were well tuned and were well used by our group. The information books for visitors are badly in need of some attention. All together our time at Wootton House will be fondly remembered.

  • "What a fabulous house!"

! Super homely with all the facilities we needed. Bedrooms are all spacious and bright, bathrooms are well appointed with great showers in most of them. (A slightly less powerful shower in the red room en-suite but still ok). Lovely clean white towels and bedding throughout and comfy beds. The younger people in our party loved the four posters! Downstairs we only used one of the sitting rooms but it was large with plenty of seating for all of us. The sofas have seen better days but were still comfortable. The pianos got used by several of us! When we were at the house we spent the majority of our time outside or in the amazing kitchen. The kitchen was definitely our favourite room, warm, cosy and comfortable. The games room was a big hit in the evenings and when it rained whilst the wonderful wild swimming pond was used by most of us with some of our party using this almost daily. Some lovely sunny days allowed us to make full use of the huge and beautiful garden and tennis courts. We had a couple of minor issues with a panel in the red bedroom wardrobe falling off on arrival, the tv speaker playing up in the morning room and the dishwasher breaking down but overall we had a brilliant family holiday and absolutely loved the house to the point that we’ve already booked again for next year. We would recommend Wootton House for its character, space and comfort and for its location, being quite central for lots of surrounding attractions.

Really beautiful house and gardens. There's loads of games in the games room including things for younger kids (We'd brought toys and books for my toddler but wouldn't have needed either as the house had plenty from rocking horses to train sets to picture books). We also spent a warm afternoon having a wonderful time being rubbish at croquet! The house is decorated in a way that suits its age but the bathrooms all seemed fairly modern (nice baths and showers with plenty of hot water for a large group of people and good water pressure). The kitchen is huge and well equipped and the pianos were tuned in preparation for our visit. The caretaker was really nice and quick to respond to messages when we had questions. It was a really good weekend!

  • "Wootton House was reminiscent of a bygone era and a bit tired, yet it remains proud and comfortably wraps you up in its large size and tangible family history."

The house facilities were perfectly adequate for a large group and the expansive gardens greatly appreciated. The object of a Grade II listing is to curb unwarranted change; that is true of it's character too. Sure, have an information pack somewhere, sort out the roof leak in the toyroom, the broken shower control handles and clear the tennis court of beech nuts, and maybe even a judicious lick of paint, but whatever you do, don't destroy this quintessential English country house by modernising it.

Thank you for all of those comments. I'll put out a search for the Visitors Book - it should be there! And the shower handles and leaks have already been dealt with. The Painting remains a Forth Bridge task, particularly as it has to be slipped in between visitors, but please be assured that we are on it, and it will be done absolutely in keeping with the historic feel of the house. Plenty of inside space and well equipped kitchen & utility. Bathrooms excellent with plenty of hot water. Reception room sofas and chairs adequate but very tired. Decor and carpets also tired but clean. A large amount of family history in the shape of pictures and mementos in every room on all horizontal surfaces and walls which leant to an overall interesting appearance but susceptible to accidental damage. The house is huge and generally well appointed with a well equipped kitchen. The grounds are lovely and we would have made more use of them had it been drier. We appreciated the way the upstairs bathrooms have been updated and these were clean and well appointed. However the downstairs bath was not usable as it did not drain properly. We made good use of the dining room which was a nice place to eat. The larger sitting room was very comfortable. The musicians in the party made use of the pianos but would recommend that they are tuned. We enjoyed the collection of interesting books, pictures etc. The location of the property is beautiful. The property is slightly lacking in terms of cleanliness-for example there were dog hairs on some of the downstairs carpets and it was a little dusty and cobwebby in places. We would recommend more cleaning materials are provided-broom, dustpan and brush, dusters, mop and bucket, cordless vacuum cleaner, cleaning products etc. We would have been happy to do more cleaning before departure if we had had the means. Some of our party found some of the beds uncomfortable as has been commented before.Overall there were lots of good things about this lovely house and we think the few downsides could be easily addressed to make for a more comfortable stay for visitors.

The house is comfortable, elegant, and well loved.

You enter through a large front hall with wood floors and oak panelling which leads to the equally impressive back hall with twin pianos; a handsome Steinway grand and an upright.

The house has two reception rooms; a sitting room with a marble fireplace and fine paintings and a lovely drawing room with damask wallpaper, an open fire and French windows to the front garden.

Overlooking the rear garden is a large formal dining room where the long oak dining table sits before an enormous Jacobean-style ornamental fireplace - perfect for dinner parties or that special occasion.

The kitchen is huge and very well equipped - there's everything you'll need here to cater for your group, including a 4-door Aga and pantry, and for something a bit special, professional catering can be arranged.

The Abbot’s Room, an enormous games room with table tennis, children's snooker table, darts, TV and PlayStation 2 will ensure that there's always plenty to do, even on those not so sunny days.

On the first floor is a library area with window seats and eight bedrooms, four double rooms, one with an en suite bathroom, and two four poster beds, and four twin rooms, one with an en suite shower room.

Outside is a large mature garden where you can play croquet on the lawn, a hard tennis court and climbing frames, slides and swings for the children.

Accessed through a converted potting shed, you will find a changing room with benches, a shower room, a loo and a drinks fridge.Walk through into a glasshouse with comfy seating and a bar area, from here you can access the natural swim pool.

Famous for its annual music festival and tor, the nearby town of Glastonbury has all the amenities you could need, and is well worth a visit.

The beautiful cathedral city of Wells, Wookey Hole Caves and historic Bath, are also within easy reach.

With so much to see and do, Wootton House is sure to be a real hit with all the family.

Further afield, the Regency City of Bath, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge are all an easy drive away. Overall, an outstandingly beautiful and easily accessible area with much to do and see.
