Manningtree is a charming town resting in the River Stour estuary on the Essex/Suffolk border, and is part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. The town is best known for being recognised as the smallest town by area in England and according to the 2011 census of 900 people reside in this quaint town. Despite its small size there are shops to help ease self-catered stays as well as a few pubs including The Crown and The Red Lion; there is even a fabulous Wine and Tapas Bar called Estuary and Lucca an excellent Italian; meaning there are plenty of options for evenings out. From April to September the town plays host to a charming, monthly vintage market showcasing antiques and vintage collectables; and on colder days the town has its own cooking school and nearby pottery school. Guests can partake in a variety of watersports on the estuary or can head to Alton Water where they can take to the reservoir with kayaks, paddle boards and canoes. Explore the coast at Frinton-on-Sea, where you can while the days away upon its golden sands, splash around in the refreshing sea and even hire a beach hut. Alternatively head into Colchester to traverse its 11th century castle and the Natural History Museum, or visit either of the town's golf clubs before ambling through Castle Park or Highwoods Country Park. Explore all of Essex with Manningtree as your base.
