  • "Gorgeous cosy quiet place."

Beaches 10 min walk away were sandy and a doggy heaven. Owner was helpful and left lovely treats for us. Plenty of maps and books on the area and islands nearby. Bed was warm and comfortable with good quality linen. We were lucky with the weather for the end of October as it was sunny and warm apart from last 2 days of high winds.Even though it was a long journey from Sussex it was well worth a visit..

  • "Smiddy Cottage was wonderful, we left a little piece of our hearts there."

We cannot fault it at all, it was beautifully presented, spotlessly clean, quiet, sunsets to die for and perfectly positioned to visit nearby Eriskay and Barra, to add to it all Neil was the perfect host. If anyone is considering booking this cottage, they should not hesitate. Thank you Neil for the perfect stay in your beautiful Smiddy Cottage and sharing your family history with us which made the stay even more special, and for the welcome gifts of Salmon, Oatcakes and Pancakes. Best regards, Gwen and Chris.

Thank Neal for his welcome gifts, the smoked salmon was lovely. The only improvement we can think is to get a smart TV for the lounge when the old TV is done.We saw otters, owls, seals but not the eagles! A lovely cottage ,we would recommend it to anyone

  • "On my first entry into the house I banged my head on a low hung stone which keeps the thatch in place."

I reckon it could be hung on the netting a few inches higher. The hot tap of the sink in the bathroom turns the wrong way for a Brit! Consequently the tap fitting has become loose and the nut underneath just needs to be tightened. The cooker hood didn't work but this was not an issue really, neither was the fact that the remote for the TV didn't work. We didn't go on holiday to watch TV but kept the program on a News channel alone. There was also a Radio which was good The most important thing is that the house is in a lovely situation, surrounded by a great variety of bird life including a short eared owl and a barn owl, and, of course it is close to a beach suitable for the hardy to swim from. Our stay was so enjoyable we regret not booking for longer. The house is very comfortable and well appointed. There is a lot one can do within walking distance of the front door!

  • "We had a fabulous time at the Smiddy on South Uist."

Neil was a great host, he was attentive at fixing the wifi and left the most generous welcome package. He also let us stay an extra night when our ferry was cancelled. We were also impressed at how spotless and clean the cottage was, it was extremely comfortable and snug, and in a very convenient location for exploring the islands. We hope to return again one day!

It has amazing modern kitchen appliances for preparing special meals from the superb local salmon and seafood. Neil our host was extremely kind even offering to accommodate us should our ferry not have sailed and he bakes fabulous pancakes, absolutely worthy of a 5 star review.

  • "A real gem of a place."

The cottage is beautiful and well equipped in a real home from home way. It’s surprisingly bigger than expected, very comfortable and a pleasure to come ‘home’ following a day of island hopping. When we arrived, there was warmth and light and the small thoughtful touches provided a ‘wow’ moment. The lovely owner, Neil left a generous welcome package, which was much appreciated. The cottage is located in an ideal place to tour the Uist. It’s is surrounded by machair and a short walk to white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Getting about is easily accessible by car. Everyone on the island is friendly. We couldn’t be happier with the cottage and Neil as a host. We intend to return and would highly recommend.

  • "A warm welcome from Neil , the owner set us up for a fantastic week in South Uist."

We have rented many cottages over the years but Smiddy Cottage was by far the best . Cosy , comfortable and deceptively large inside this well appointed cottage is the perfect base for exploring The Uists and beyond. Our dogs loved the enclosed garden and the beautiful beach just 5 minutes walk from the cottage. We can’t wait to go back. Smiddy Cottage is a real gem !

  • "We really enjoyed our stay in Smiddy Cottage."

There are a couple of suggestions for improvement: a) The large lamp on the table served no purpose and got in the way of trying to watch the tv (would suggest it is not needed). The position of the two armchairs does not allow to watch the tv (we had to move one to watch the tv when there) b) In the shed where the bins were there was a lot of bird droppings on the floor and over the vaccum cleaner - suggest this is cleaned.

  • "This is a beautiful holiday cottage, thoughtfully equipped and a pleasure to stay in."

We were grateful too for the welcome gifts. We love South Uist, Eriskay and Benbecula and found the maps and walking information so useful in exploring out of the way places we otherwise may have overlooked. So much wildlife to see including short eared owls up the road, hen harrier ad one evening, a whale passing through the bay. A truly peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable week.

  • "First time we saw The Smiddy we couldn't believe how beautiful it was."

Tiny outside but spacious, comfortable and well equipped to a high standard. The area is outstanding - we have seen lots of wildlife including whales! But the otters have been very elusive. Thanks for making us so welcome. The place is a little piece of heaven and the people so friendly. The weather has been amazing, fabulous all round.

  • "After all sorts of wild Hebridean weather it was great to return to your lovely, warm and comfortable cottage."

Thanks for the welcome pack. We had a great day out with Steve Duffield, (01876 580619) seeing otter families playing and viewing a huge variety of birds and flora amid beautiful countryside. Nice walk to Polochar Inn for supper and enjoyed the museum cafe. Also, bought local fish at the factory on Barra - delicious scallops and watched the gannets diving at the ferry terminal on Eriskay. Very good food at the Politician pub inn Eriskay. We enjoued the free 'fishing trail' in Grimsay and walks to loch Eylort and Toby Beag.

  • "Having spent the last 40 years on holiday on Arran we decided it was time for a change."

We loved the Smiddy Cottage in South Uist, and loved exploring, North Uist, Barra, Eriskay, Bernaray and Benbecula. The cottage and surrounding scenery is fabulous and Alfie our dog loved the 5 minute walk to the beach, where he would chase sticks all day. We walked to the Kildonan tea room and sat out side with Alfie as we also did at the Pollochar Inn as unfortunately they do not allow dogs even in their public bar . Loved our South Uist experience, wonderful scenery and wonderful comfortable cottage, looking forward to returning. Thank you for a wonderful experience x
