  • "Hi The problem with the TV not working was resolved on the Tuesday 29th, not really acceptable as we arrived at 4."

30pm on Friday 25th we went without TV and Radio all that time, not something I would expect from Sykes or the cottage handling company. The kitchen is fully equipped and clean so is the bathroom, the bedroom is a nice size with a comfortable clean bed. The lounge is a good size. The location is superb, brilliant views and peaceful. The downside is the cleanliness of the cottage, the lounge and dining area needs a good clean and a lick of paint wouldn’t go amiss. The whole cottage has a big problem with spiders and ladybirds, downstairs and upstairs. We had to de-cobweb the entire cottage, especially around the fire area. There is plaster/paint coming off the wall behind the table and across to the kitchen. The woodburner is tired and in my opinion needs the flu re-sealing and verging on being unsafe. The logs provided are too big for the woodburner and need splitting (as advised in the woodburner manual). There was no fire retardant glove. We had to live out of our suitcase for the whole week as we didn’t want spiders on our clothing because there were spiders in the bedroom cupboard. There’s no blind in the bathroom (looks like there had been one but because of the way the shower is located it obviously gets wet) or any obscure glass, a bit uncomfortable as there is a public right of way as you look out of the window! I would like some compensation for our inconvenience and disappointment on our weeks holiday that we looked forward to. Thank you Mr and Mrs Jones

Ideal for a relaxing break. We would love to book again sometime. The shower was feeble, needs replacing. The hedges should be trimmed. Our only complaint was the cleaner and the gardener turned up 40 minutes before checkout time. They hung around chatting by the gate waiting for us to leave. We thought this very rude and unprofessional. We were asked to leave the cottage open for them but we decided to lock it as they could've been anyone.

  • "Rose cottage is a lovely cosy home set in a beautiful location with stunning panoramic views."

The cottage was beautifully presented with a lovely welcoming basket including cider and ale! The cottage was lovely and clean and for a couple (and our dog Ziggy) there was plenty of room. The garden was loved by Ziggy and is safe, well maintained and enclosed. Our Winter stay meant the heating was essential and the bedroom heating was especially lovely and cosy... The log burning fire was an essential downstairs so it was nice to know there was ample wood logs in the shed. However, although the welcoming book advised there was additional kindling in the locked container in the shed, we couldn't find the key that was meant to be in the key cabinet (presumably the same key cabinet that the cottage keys were in), so we needed to buy kindling. Another minor issue was that the over bath shower was at the reclining end of the bath (opposite to taps) meaning it was difficult to actually stand under the shower without leaning over alot. Although there is no wifi (a plus for our stay as its lovely to get away from constant connection) we still had a strong phone signal if we needed it. Rose cottage is a definite 'recommend' if you're after a relaxing, quiet, comfortable and picturesque break.

Easy booking process too and clear signposting for how to access the property/directions. It was very clean and tidy with a cute atmosphere, and the beautiful welcome basket was brilliant. We in particular loved the Welsh Cider! We saw previous reviews with some feedback that we agreed with - I think if there's any way possible then wifi would be an excellent addition to the property, and also the chest of drawers in the bedroom as listed in previous feedback would be very useful. Also personally, the view from the property is lovely but you cannot see the view from the garden! We had to move the table and chairs out into the driveway in order to see it. Also may be worth updating some of the leaflets in the leaflet basket/removing duplicates.

It’s a lovely cosy property and has everything you need. We had a lovely stay and or little Westie felt right at home. The only thing that caused a mild problem was the shower. Because of the sloping ceiling, the shower head is at the sloping end of the bath and not the tap end. Not a major problem for me but my wife, who has rheumatoid arthritis found it a bit difficult to get close or underneath it. That’s really the only thing and as I say, it wasn’t a major problem. Everything was really wonderful.

We've just completed our fourth time there within 2 years. There were a couple of minor issues that, when we reported them to Balfours, were communicated and dealt with well within our satisfaction. Balfours work really hard. Sadly the same cannot be said for Sykes. Having returned from a break in the cottage this time last year, I booked our breaks there for a week each in January and July this year. Their website wouldn’t allow me to make a minor amendment after I made a single date mistake. I had to ring them, lengthening the booking, whereby they hit me with a £38 amendment fee on top. Shortly after, I started receiving money-off offers (mainly £25, sometimes £40) for my next booking. I rang them again and asked if one could be applied to the bookings I’d already made, having just committed to over a thousand pounds over the two, they told me no. It’ll be no surprise then, that I told myself I’d never use them again.

Thank you for taking the time to leave valuable feedback, this is very important to us, I was so happy to hear you enjoyed your holiday at Rose Cottage. It was disappointing to hear you feel you have been let down by the service provided by Sykes Cottages, If you wish to discuss or elaborate more on the issues raised, please feel free to contact the Sykes office on the details below, quoting your booking reference number and any other information that may assist us in providing the best possible outcome and customer service. 01211 345700 option 1 then option 3 Property Owner

The cottage and it's location are lovely as ever. However the DVD remote still doesn't work - we first reported this on our first visit a year ago. The window blinds in the kitchen and bathroom have been removed but not replaced, - we used black bin bags. Also, still rather peeved about two things: Firstly, having booked (in July/Aug 19) this (Jan 20) and a future holiday in July 20, paying full price, I have constantly received emails from Sykes telling me I can have £20 or £40 off a future booking. I had 2 future bookings already made, our third and fourth with Sykes, but could not claim any discount. Second Peeve, when making those bookings online, I could make no amendment online meaning I had to ring Sykes, which cost me a £38 amendment fee. I will have paid over £1k on these two bookings alone but no chance of discount and the amendment fee was an insult on top. You tell me if I'm likely to use Sykes again????

One lovely touch was the welcome tray with a bottle of Welsh beer, Welsh cider, Kettle crisps and some Welsh cakes. Rose cottage is very private with a large lawn garden with views across the fields with sheep and lambs in them. From every window there are delightful views of the countryside. The building at the top of the garden had a washing machine, tumble drier, sink and spare logs and kindling for the wood burner. The bed is very comfortable to sleep in. The cottage is really lovely to stay in. There is patio area outside the patio doors and it is a real sun trap. There are lots of good walks nearby. There are a lot of leaflets and maps and guides to help you make the most of the area. There is a Lidl at Monmouth which is close by for shopping . While in Monmouth near the Monow bridge on the way up to the town there is a passage way with a shop called Pasty heaven. Their pasties are gorgeous especially the steak and Stilton ones. It is a lovely place to stay and we would recommend it.

  • "Rose Cottage is probably the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in."

The cottage has been very tastefully modernised include every facility one could ever need. Nothing has been omitted. Others may have had problems with the shower we had none. Others may have missed having wifi but we found it refreshing. One or two minor criticisms....the grass outside was very long and made recovering dog poo difficult.....it would have been nice to have the phone number so we could receive incoming calls (particularly as the mobile signal was intermittent). Having said that we had a marvellous week. We can recommend Picton Castle and gardens, walk to Blackpool Mill, the Old Station near Tintern and all walks on the river Wye at Symonds Yat. For eating out we found the Royal Arms at Llangrove excellent for Sunday lunch and we ate there in the evenings but the menu is a little limited. Altogether Rose Cottage is a 5* cottage.

  • "We wanted a rural, quiet, away from it all cottage and that's exactly what we got, but we hadn't bargained for the fabulous views in all directions!"

The cottage was cosy and warm, the bed comfortable and everything was very clean. The welcome tray was much appreciated with local beer, just up our street! Only criticism, would be the bath/shower, a case of design over function, but we coped for the 10 days we were there. A brilliant holiday cottage for a couple and one we would definitely return to or recommend.

We were very pleased. If there is any criticism, it is that perhaps we were treated TOO well: a lot of the crockery was Wedgewood and the wine glasses, etc, all matched and looked quite expensive. We were therefore a little more anxious than usual about accidental breakages. Luckily, we didn't break anything! Possibly replace some of the plates, cups, etc with something a bit more bog-standard mix-and-match? If one then does break something, it can be discreetly replaced before the end of the holiday. Embarrassment spared.

The only think that bugged us a little bit was the lay out of the bathroom. Not easy to stand up and have a shower and also everywhere got soaking wet. Plenty of room for a separate shower cubicle.
