  • "West View was dressed for Christmas."

It was a lovely surprise to see the tree in the lounge. Beds were made up with crisp white sheets. Aga threw out great heat in the kitchen, which was well equipped with plenty of cutlery, crockery etc. felt really at home and wouldn’t hesitate to return. Only down side was the parking. The drive was difficult to get into and even harder to get out, being on a blind bend. We left our car at my sister’s house, so it wasn’t a problem. A big thank you to the owners for making us feel so welcome.

  • "This is a lovely old farmhouse style home."

We visited in September as three adults and one 4-year-old. There's plenty of space for hanging out at home if the weather is a bit rubbish. There's one car parking space in the driveway and additional parking on the main road. It was a pretty and quiet area, no disturbance from the roads. The home is just what you should expect from something a couple of hundred years old (wonky and squeaky floors, a bit musty, lots of character!), but the owners did a great job modernising and the kitchen and bathrooms are modern and work very well, and the beds comfortable. We'd certainly visit and stay again.

  • "Potentially a 5 star cottage but lacks the nice little touches, a bit unloved."

1 driveway very challenging, gusts should be warned 2. Cottage cold and damp when we arrived 3. No welcome pack/flowers etc 4. No heating on/no instructions 5. No dishwasher tabs, antibacterial spray, soap in en suite 6. Log burner not cleaned out 7. Serious trip hazard step into twin bedroom upstairs resulting in 3 nasty falls 8.Dead mouse in utility room 9. Front gutters overflowing 10. Overflow pipe leaking We managed to sort out the heating and made our stay as comfortable as possible but we were disappointed that the cottage lacked so much. I’m disappointed in Sykes for marketing a property which lacks so many essential items. I’m not sure I will use the company again.

Beautifully warm and comfortable, we made good use of the woodburner. The aga decided to go out. Via Sykes, we had quick and very good support from a maintenance man and then the plumber to rectify the problem. Enjoyed a concert in the Sat Peter’s Church, next door, on the Sunday afternoon.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at West View."

It was nice to be trusted with such a fine cottage. It did not matter if it was bad weather out side as we we had every thing we needed. We felt so at home there, that we booked for next March while we were there. My wife and I enjoyed our stay on our own, but hope to take some of our family there in March. We hope that the Aga will be on as said till the end of March. We spent most of the time in the kitchen. I also met the vicar of St Peters and helped them plant some Daffodils. Just one thing is that it would have been better if we had more than one key. If the family come with us in March I would request three keys. That way we could all depart and come back at different times.

  • "The accommodation was perfect."

The house was lovely and comfortable with all the necessary kitchen equipment. Rooms were clean and homely. There was an issue with the shower not draining in the master bedroom on suite but the handyman in our group managed to sort that out. Lovely to be able to have a BBQ on a couple of nights especially as the local pub The Crown Inn was not doing food, though we did sample their drinks on a few occasions, and food at their sister pub The Buddle Inn. Having the "games" cupboard was a great idea, as was the torches for guests to use as Shorewell doesn't have any street lights. I would recommend staying at West View.

  • "Whilst the cottage was very spacious, comfortable and very well equipped, we experienced issues which were not dealt with the urgency expected."

See separate email exchange regarding this as I believe the dealing of the issues was not the owners fault, but down to the maintenance company and Sykes.

  • "Clearly it’s a very old property however it clearly needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it up to a standard that adequately reflects the rental being charged."

The property is damp. All of our clothes smelt damp and musty when we returned and all had to be washed. There is only 1 standup shower in this 4 bedroom property. It’s clearly overused and as such there is black mould growing in the shower due to their being no ventilation in the bathroom. The 2nd double bedroom needs a king size bed in their and not a double as it’s far too small for 2 adults. We had to use the same towels for a whole week as there is no mid week change of towels which is again very poor given the price paid for this cottage. The kitchen is full of useless things you would be unlikely to use on a holiday. The space would be much better left empty for your guests to put food in. The property is advertised as no pets but I can assure you there have been animals staying here as you can smell dog in the living room carpet / sofas. There were ample cots / high chairs and a lovely toy basket for babies / toddlers which was a nice touch however some appropriate dinner plates / bowls / cups would have been useful. If you have never stayed in an old cottage then you will definitely get a real old cottage experience here. Location was good but it’s a real shame the crown (pub opposite the house) was only open certain days for drinks with no food menu due to no kitchen staff. This was a common theme across the island in general. Overall I would say this cottage is very overpriced and really needs quite a lot of money spent on it to get it up to a good rentable standard.

  • "The house was spacious and comfortable, lovely comfy beds, well-equipped kitchen."

Fairly clean but nor spotless. Despite instructions provided we failed to get the screen in the living room so couldn't use the television or Playstation or DVD and as we had children with us, we would have been glad of them. The toilet seat in the en-suite bathroom of the master bedroom kept falling off. We had difficulty with the rubbish / recycling which should have gone out on Tuesday morning. We noticed when we got there that the recycling bin was already full to overflowing. There were notes asking us to put rubbish out but the timetable for collection was up to April 2018!!! We tried to calculate which it should be, decided it should be the recycling bin so we put that out - and then the rubbish lorry came and therefore didn't take it!!! By the time we left on Saturday both bins were over-full. Despite these minor irritations we had a lovely relaxing stay and we loved the Crown Inn - the adults for the beer and gun and the children for the swings and duck-feeding. The children also had a lot of fun at the village playground.

A place full of character and warmth. The kitchen was fabulous and so well equipped, we wanted for nothing! So much room for everyone to spread out. The instructions for all manner of things was a godsend. The village itself is lovely and the local pub across the road served some good beer and scrumptious food. Shorwell is ideally placed on the the isle of wight to get around and explore, you are never too far from anywhere. If you have young children Tapnell farm is a must visit...so much to do there and so well thought out. Would definately recommend staying at West View and we would love to return.

Wonderfully plentiful hot water. Excellent beds and linen. Décor and ornaments etc of a very high quality, making the stay one where we felt quite special rather than just holidaymakers .The variety of cooking equipment was not just adequate, it was well thought out and the choice of an AGA or electric cooker must please all chefs! Well appointed bathrooms and convenient utility room and downstairs loo. Amazing to have a landline too, most unusual and clear instructions as to how to use it if necessary, a brilliant touch. The setting next to the beautiful historic church and alongside a great pub and opposite a pretty thatched cottage added to the ambience. The local shop a few moments away was a bonus and there is a local bus route. Shorwell is well placed for visiting Carisbrook, Freshwater, Osborne etc. In fact, nowhere is too far away on the Island. All this added up to a restful holiday where we immediately felt relaxed, unhurried, unworried and at home.

Adjacent to this you will find a quirky twin bedroom, enhanced with rustic wooden beams and a feature period fireplace for an added touch of class.

The country cottage-style kitchen/diner continues this unique theme, hosting an impressive, retro-style AGA cooker, multi-coloured tiling, and splendid cream-coloured units that compliment the central dining table.

When sleep calls, head upstairs to discover three further bedrooms, which provide an array of sleeping arrangements including a twin, a double, and a sumptuous master bedroom embellished with a feature stone chimney breast and a sleek en-suite shower room.

When you want to unwind, step out into the courtyard where you can take a peaceful seat with morning coffee in hand, or perhaps enjoy a spot of alfresco dining for lunch or dinner with the help of the barbecue.
