  • "Loved the house, was very comfortable and we enjoyed going to the beach everyday."

Thanks for a great stay, we will definitely be coming back !

  • "We loved the position of the cottage, just 5 minutes from a lovely sandy beach."

We found the cleanliness a bit lacking, found dirty cutlery, water marks on surfaces and the barbecue was very rusty and dirty. Some of the towels and bedding are stained. The garden is a lovely size and great for kids. The patio area, in our view is verging on dangerous, it is crumbling, one of our party had a bad fall resulting in facial bruising, the wooden garden furniture is rotting and unstable. General outside maintenance is poor.

  • "A great location on the island."

Wonderful to walk to the surf and back. Fabulous house with plenty of space and well- equipped kitchen. 2 fridges very handy. It’s great and perfect place to start walking from. Car park opposite which had NT loos ( opened the week we were there) and food truck for coffee, ice cream and snacks. All in all it was a perfect place for us.

  • "An Isle of Wight gem!"

Wonderful property, superb location. Compton Grange definitely fitted the bill - offering everything we were looking for, and more. The views are excellent from every window and the rooms are filled with natural light. There is plenty of space in the house but it is still cosy. Our 3 year old grandson, on returning from a busy day out, said that he had 'missed his Isle of Wight home'. It does indeed feel home from home. It is perfectly situated for the beach, walks (from the property) and for exploring the island by car and bus (bus stops are by the beach car park). After an exhausting day, you can collapse into the very comfortable beds! Great for a multi-generational holiday. The 'welcome pack' was, well, very welcome. The oven could have been a little cleaner. We found the back door was difficult to lock/unlock. Communication was great when there was a problem with a faulty toilet flush. The matter was swiftly dealt with - thank you. This is definitely a property we'd like to return to.

  • "Wow! What a fantastic property!"

House is superb and location is lovely, with great views from every room. Garden is large and great for a dog. Lots of different types of zones to eat and relax, with the added bonus of a secret garden. The patio area does require some maintenance but that is the only negative. The only question is, why would you own a house like this and NOT live in it yourself :-) Absolutely lovely, we will definitely return.

  • "Location, property, contents were superb everything you would need was provided."

Beds really comfy, over and above with linen, towels, extra pillows etc.. Cleanliness was just a tad under par, oven and some oven pans needed attention. Would have loved the garden to have been maintained to a higher degree. All in all one of the best we have stayed in. Had wonderful week.

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We have passed on your comments to our management team, who will resolve this . Our apologies that the garden was not looking its best. It normally looks well tended with lawns mowed etc. A combination of wet and windy weather and broken lawn mowers is to blame. It will be back up to scratch in the next couple of weeks. Thank you again for your comments and we hope you will visit Compton Grange again in the future. Best wishes. Property Owner

  • "I was looking for a special property to stay as my cousins were flying in from New Zealand and Lanzarote, they were brought up in Freshwater, well we were not disappointed."

What a fantastic location, it is a beautiful cottage/house in picturesque surroundings. The house catered for our every need, the kitchen was large open plan with everything you could want. The beds were very comfortable with beautiful views out of every window. The wildlife was great with goldfinches and a robin in the tree by the secret garden, we even saw a white tailed eagle fly over a couple of times, plus a kestrel, wrens and bats. the walks around the property gave breathtaking views over the cliffs and Tennyson downs. I wouldn't think twice about booking this fabulous property in the future.

  • "Great location and lovely house."

All good except with such great views it would be nice if the windows were cleaned from time to time. A decent bread knife would also be safer than the current one, which is blunt. However these are minor points compared to all the good stuff

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay. We are sorry that the windows were not clean. They are regularly cleaned but because the cottage is right on the coast the salt laden wind often undoes the good work that the window cleaner has done! Thank you for letting us know about the bread knife too. We will replace it immediately. We do hope you will come to stay again. Property Owner

  • "Our week at Compton Grange, from the 19th to the 26th of August 2022 was fabulous."

We had needed to be near Freshwater to attend a family wedding and the Sykes booking staff were very helpful in finding this house for us. The cottage was a bit like the Tardis, much bigger inside than you'd expect from the view, driving up to it. Our party of seven consisted of three generations, ranging in age from seven to seventy-nine. The house was ideal for our family stay. The garden enabled us to play cricket, boules, and even aerobic workouts - enjoyment for everyone. The stunning views and the very nearby beach were the cherry on the top. Being on top of the cliffs, we expected a difficult path down to the beach, but were pleasantly surprised to find that there was a well-made staircase from top to bottom. I would strongly recommend Compton Grange for a family stay on the Isle of Wight.

  • "Amazing cottage, in a fantastic location, the property is done up really well and is very comfortable."

It's a very short walk to a lovely beach. I'd definitely recommend it. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is the lack of 'extra touches' compared with other places (usually cheaper) that I've stayed in, e.g the welcome pack contained uht milk and long life bread, compared with places I've arrived to find platters of fresh fruits and fresh flowers etc, the essentials were provided, but but really enough to last the week (and there was only two of us+a baby) e.g tea, coffee, shower gel, shampoo which fortunately we'd brought our own. Lack of plug sockets by bedside tables was also a minor niggle. There was no option for high chair or travel cot which again meant we had to bring our own. Also as a note for others with young kids the rungs on the banisters our far enough apart a child could very easily fit though so we were needing to watch our daughter very carefully when upstairs (pretty sure it wouldn't pass modern building regulations). These negatives are all pretty minor and absolutely would not put me off staying again, just a note for the owner that a little extra can make a big difference! Jon, the house manager was great and when we said there were no bin bags he got them to us the same day.

The comfort, facilities and cleanliness were all amazing. Everything was so well thought out including things like plug in torches in case of a powercut and all the little extras which make life so much easier were really appreciated like the welcome basket of food bits and washing up liquid and hand soup etc. The house is in such an amazing setting and we really managed to unwind also helped by the super comfy beds. I would highly recomend this property.

The property

Positioned in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, Compton Grange is truly unique.

The house stands alone, surrounded by National Trust downland and a short walk down the drive to Compton Bay, with its two mile stretch of sandy beach.

From here, you can swim, surf, walk, spot wildlife, hunt for fossils, see the dinosaur footprints and watch the stunning sunsets.

This area has recently been named one of the ten most beautiful stargazing spots in the UK.

Compton Grange is a stone detached house, reached by a country driveway, which is also a public footpath, giving access to endless walks across the downs from your door.

The three-storey cottage has stunning sea views from almost every room and is a superb base for families and friends to experience the beauty of the Isle of Wight. There is a private, gated parking area for a maximum of 4 cars, Just inside the front porch is a downstairs shower room with washing machine and tumble dryer.

The light, spacious hallway on the ground floor is perfect for getting ready for your day out at the beach, walking, cycling or sight seeing.

It leads into the kitchen dining room with its beautiful view across the fields to the white cliffs of Freshwater Bay and Tennyson Downs and the Needles.

Watch the spectacular sunsets from your kitchen table.

Go through the kitchen to a small back porch area with hooks and radiator for drying coats and keeping boots.

The back door leads out into the garden. The sitting room has ample seating to watch television and cosy up by the electric fire which provides the comforting effect of a woodburning stove.

From here you can enjoy the views across the garden to the lake and the sea beyond.

In winter months, the beach is extremely quiet and you can often have the beach to yourself: the Compton Bay car park is virtually empty apart from the surfers and regular walkers.

In the summer, the car park is busier but inside the cottage it is extraordinarily quiet and peaceful and you can be completely unaware of the activity going on nearby.

Stairs lead from the hallway to the first floor where there are two bedrooms, both with zip and link superking size beds (which can also be twin rooms, if required).

Both bedrooms have views over the garden and lake to the sea beyond and both enjoy the stunning sunrise.

There is also a shower room and a bath with shower room on this floor, both of which have views across the sea towards the Needles.

When the sun rises, the white cliffs can often turn pink in the early morning and the sight is spectacularThere are narrow stairs to the second floor with its quirky brickwork and attic bedrooms.

The larger of the two has superking zip and link beds (which can also become twin beds) and has views up to the downs behind the cottage.

The smaller of the two has two full size single beds at floor level and stunning views across the sea.

Outside, there is a lockable garage in which guests are welcome to store bicycles, bodyboards, surfboards, golf clubs, buckets and spades and hang wetsuits and wet clothes.

There is also a table tennis table.

There is a selection of light garden furniture in here which guests can easily place wherever they choose to relax.

The garden which surrounds the cottage, can be accessed either from the car parking area, through a five bar gate and onto a large lawn with bench from which to watch the wildlife that gathers on the lake.

At the bottom of the garden are a selection of fruit trees growing pears, apples, plums and figs, which guests are welcome to pick and enjoy.

The garden can also be accessed through a little gate to the right of the front porch where there is an outside tap, hose and washing line for washing out wetsuits and sandy beach kit.

There is a shallow stream that runs the length of the garden and which, at present, is not fenced so families with young children should be aware of this.

Outside the kitchen window, there is a picnic table from which to sit and enjoy the sunsets and listen to the stream whilst enjoying sundowners in this stunning location. From everywhere in the garden, you can enjoy sea and countryside views but if you are seeking peace and quiet, enter the fenced “secret garden” through a gate opposite the back porch.

As you enter through the honeysuckle and rose arch, you arrive in a secluded and utterly private lawned area with shrubs and further seating.

Here you will find a small shed with barbeque.

The stream also runs through this garden which provides a quiet little suntrap, out of the wind, in which to truly get away from it all.

Compton Grange is surrounded by National Trust land and it is home to a variety of wildlife.

Ducks and water fowl gather on the lake.

In the mornings, a family of wild geese can sometimes be seen outside on the lawn, the resident hawk can be spotted perching on the fence or chimney and a family of stoats has occasionally been seen in the secret garden.

Guests are requested to note any wildlife that they see in the visitors’ book.

Whilst appearing away from it all, Compton Grange is only a short drive from Freshwater Bay, Yarmouth, Brighstone and a wealth of attractions to explore and enjoy.Whether it be watching the dramatic stormy seas in the Winter from the warmth of the cottage or walking back from a day on the beach to watch the sunset from the garden, Compton Grange provides a truly memorable escape all year round.
