  • "What a fabulous place to stay."

The Cowshed has been thoughtfully renovated and furnished, it is comfortable, well equipped, clean, warm, set in beautiful surroundings and well situated for travel. Our hosts were very pleasant, discrete, yet on hand to help if required. I would be happy to recommend as a great place to go. Thank you Cathy & Tim for a wonderful stay helped by the gorgeous weather.

Great location for all the usual attractions (National Trust & Coast etc). Lovely welcome pack & friendly hosts. A bonus for me was the Carriage Driving competition in the adjacent fields - a private event but very quiet & no disturbance to our holiday, hardly knew they were there & had an invite by hosts to go over with my camera. BONUS!!!

This is an excellent break for a short stay, in the middle of beautiful countryside, and near so many places on interest. We plan to return.

We will 100% stay again for future holidays. Also the owners were very kind, leaving many amenities including a carrot cake, butter in the fridge and bread too. Large rooms with great Wi-Fi and channels on the TV, with nice views and feels very private and quite. Definitely a home from home and would recommend to others.

The Cowshed was spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. It was well equipped with everything you needed for a trouble free holiday. Some lovely touches like fresh flowers and a welcome pack of milk, tea, bread and butter and even a lovely cake, added to the welcome feeling. Cathy was the nicest of hosts. Nothing was too much for her. Places of interest like Battle, Deal or Margate were within easy reach. I would recommend this lovely cottage to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing holiday.

  • "The bed in the main bedroom was not big enough."

It needs to be a king-size. There needs to be grab handles on the bath to enable people with mobility issues to get out easily. I have osteoarthritis and really struggled even with the help of my husband. The sofas are not comfortable. I had to put a pillow behind the back cushion and have another one to sit on. They were not easy to get up from unless I did this. It should also be pointed out that there are units at the bottom of the garden from which people work. We were disturbed with the sound of drills and angle grinders for om building work being carried out.

Cleanliness was ok, beds a bit hard, but that’s personal. The bathroom kept wet after showering or taking a bath. The living room was getting too hot, despite turning the temp down. We liked the room with the washing machine, we could stock up all your stuff which wasn’t in direct need. What I really missed was the owner not getting in touch by e-mail of leaving a telephone number to talk about the last details and arriving times.

The under floor heating worked a treat and the cottage was very well-appointed. On the day we were due to leave the owners were kind enough to let us stay a few hours more to allow the weather to warm up and the lane to thaw out so we could leave safely. The place was ideally located for visiting the coast and nearby countryside and activities. Our two-year old loved it too!

The layout of the property suited us perfectly having to look after our two grandsons and with the safe walled garden this was ideal. Due to the age of the boys we had the majority of our evening meals here so a slightly larger freezer would have helped but this is being really really picky, so we did manage to cope. This is our second visit to The Cowshed and we already plan to return again next year.

About the location

WESTFIELD

Battle 5 miles; Hastings 6 miles; Rye 9 miles.

Westfield is a thriving village situated only six miles inland of Hastings. With excellent access to other parts of Sussex and Kent, it’s a perfect choice for a base whilst exploring this part of the South Coast. Maplehurst Wood, on the outskirts of the village, offers approximately 78 acres of ancient woodland, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it's home to many different species of breeding birds, including kestrel, tawny owl, woodpecker and nuthatch. For those wishing for long country walks, relaxed days spent fishing, or golf, Westfield is a wonderful option. Dating back to Doomsday times, Westfield, then known as Westewelle, is still one of the largest villages in the area, and even has its own winery - Carr Taylor Vineyards, a popular tourist attraction with vineyard walks, tours and wine tasting. There’s also a village shop, newsagents, butcher, delicatessen, hairdressers and a pub called The New Inn, serving excellent food. For fine dining, The Wild Mushroom Restaurant is a good choice. With Hastings just six miles away, you can enjoy a swim in the sea, beachcombing along the shore or clambering over castle ruins. For those wishing to wander around battlements or sample a Sussex cream tea, then make your way to Battle, a short drive to the west. With the social history museum of Yesterday's World allowing a walk through time, passing quaint shops with cobbled streets, Battle is appealing at any time of year, whilst Westfield provides a wonderful base.
