  • "So difficult to give a review for various reasons."

There are negatives and also very strong positives. We arrived at Little Dunbar Cottage around 4pm on Monday 30 October. There was no central heating available, the cottage was stone cold and no hot water. We managed to get the log fire burning within 10 minutes of arrival but had no hot water. We then rang the owners who were so quick in sorting out our issues. They gave us the option to move to a cottage closer to the beach, which was only 400 yards away and provided us with everything we needed, and was also much more in our expectations for the quality we expect from Sykes. The hosts could not have been more helpful and were most understanding. The cottage we moved to was quite idyllic - being only 400 metres from the beach. I suspect that Little Dunbar Cottage would be lovely in the summer. In the winter it would need some attention so as to make it a quiet retreat. I would certainly recommend the area and the owners of these properties, but would check carefully as to the state of Little Dunbar Cottage

  • "Little Dunbar Cottage presents as a charming cottage in a beautiful rural location."

We enjoyed our holiday but Little Dunbar cottage itself was a disappointment. The main bedroom stank of damp, we opened the window and slept there the first night but it was not a good night sleep. For anyone with any respiratory problem I would say this room would be a health hazard. We switched to the twin room which was much better in terms of there not being damp but we were occasionally disturbed through the night by possibly either squirrels or bats in the ceiling. The shower of the main bedroom didn’t drain and so you had to shower in a few minutes before it would flood, there was evidence of damp in this room and the toilet seat was only partly secured to the toilet seat. The cottage had an air of neglect rather than one of comfort. In the living room there was no coffee table or side tables so if you were having a cup of tea or glass of wine there was nowhere to put your cup or glass down. We were provided with 2 towels but no hand towels or bath mats. There was no hairdryer either. There was contact numbers given so we could have voiced our concerns but it’s not what I want to be spending my energies on when I’m on holiday. We have booked through Sykes several times and have always been happy with the cottages we’ve booked, this cottage was not up to the standard that we would expect.

About the location

SOUTHERNESS

Castle Douglas 19 miles; Dalbeattie 13 miles; Dumfries 16 miles.

Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to three pubs, two village stores, a leisure centre with a pool at Parkdean and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. A great location, with something to keep everybody occupied.
