"Property is very nice."
Just a couple of issues. Heating is controlled by the owner and sometimes it was cold. Front shower area needs attention as there’s a funny smell from drainage. TV in bedrooms could not connect any other devices. No shops in the area for 10 miles. Pub food nearby was great. Had all facilities needed and very clean.
-
"A lovely well equipped place, worth going to just for the view over to scotland."
Definitely revisit, but one note to add, take supplies with you, pubs in every village but no shop for 4 miles.
-
"Solway Cottage is totally amazing."
It is so well equipped the owners have thought of everything. The location is very peaceful and has got the Best view ever over the estuary.Plenty of places to eat out and really friendly people. Its very clean and has very comfortable beds. Its definitely ten out of ten from us.Also a lovely touch we had been left some chocolates and Prosecco by the owners.Thank you Bill and Patsy.
-
"A really lovely place to stay with ever changing scenery."
Comfortable, clean, well equipped kitchen, plenty of books, maps and information. Patsy and Bill had thought of everything. The only thing on leaving that we didn’t know was where to put the kitchen caddy waste!
-
"Perfect stay at Solway Cottage."
Cottage is very comfortable, well equipped in the kitchen with everything you need to self cater. Ideal for 2 couples. Had everything needed for a relaxing holiday. Views over the estuary are stunning, enjoyed sitting on the decking watching the sunset. Owners very helpful.
-
"Had a lovely week here even with the bad weather."
It was just what we needed after I a recent bad accident. Sitting and looking out over the shore was really relaxing for us and helped in harder times. The position is really close to two bars/restaurants and we sampled and enjoyed both. A great and relaxing holiday. Thx

"Just got back from a wonderful week in Solway Cottage."
The accommodation was first rate. Very comfortable including the beds and pillows - just right! Very clean and with everything you need. Of course the icing on the cake is the stunning view from the decking, those beautiful sunsets will stay with us for a long time. We really enjoyed the peace and quite, it was just what we needed, very relaxing. Patsy and Bill are very welcoming hosts, friendly and helpful, thank you for the chocs and wine and the fresh tomatoes were delicious! We hadn't been to this part of Cumbria and it certainly won't be the last, there's much more to see. We fully expect to come back to Solway Cottage in the near future, please don't change a thing!

"Our 2nd visit to this cottage and likely not to be our last!"
!! Exceptional!!! The owners Bill and Patsy are really welcoming and helpful. Plus the strawberries out of their little garden were lovely for breakfast!! But seriously, anyone with mobility problems it is an ideal cottage and you don't need to go far the views are out of this world! Forever changing with the tide. A very relaxing holiday. Oh, and the birds are wonderful to watch!

"We had a lovely time but I think the property needs a bit of updating and a hot tub would be great"
-

Views are wonderful. Good pub a short walk away as is the Bistro which is also very nice. All in all a great holiday.

"A beautiful cottage with all amenities."
This is a very quiet village and the cottage is quiet to. You can have a well earned rest with complete solitude. Thank you for helping me to recharge my batteries

I would come back again. We loved it!
-
"Absolutely fantastic!"
- Unfortunately we did not meet Patsy and Bill during our stay as they were away so we didn't get chance to let them know that Maia Cottage was wonderful and that what they provide is exactly right ... don't change a thing! Thanks for a lovely, relaxing stay.

"We are a family of four adults who have just enjoyed Christmas in this lovely place although we didn't meet Bill & Patsy you knew where to find them the space inside is great lovely kitchen looking out to the estuary the weather wasn't the best but that didn't take the wow factor away beds comfy bathrooms large and clean we didn't visit the pub mostly due to weather we all just chilled!"
would highly recommend a stay here we hope to return in the near future

"Wonderful place in my home county."
We have been twice this year when I got really home sick. This visit was to give me time to rest and recuperate after the sudden death of my son. It was truly healing. If you love wildlife and nature and watching the tide come and go no matter what the weather then this is the place for you. Ideal for exploring the north west Cumbrian coast and round the corner the Dumfries and Galloway coastal area. Amazing wildlife reserves close by and handy for a bit of city life in the lovely city of Carlisle where you must visit the cathedral and its lovely cafe and Bookends ....the best bookshop in the area. Tullie House is amazing too but Google first as I believe it is due to close for some work to be done. Easy to travel to beautiful Cockermouth....birthplace of William Wordsworth and me!!!! Lovely independent shops too. If the weather is good travel over via beautiful Caldbeck with lovely craft shops. The owners might live next door but do not intrude but are lovely and helpful. I LOVE their garden and envy the wooden summerhouse in the garden that I covet as an artist studio. There are lots of beautiful villages nearby to explore and lots of creative people live in the area. September is Artists Trail time. Just leave me the odd week when Solway Cottage is available

"Great place we'll recommend to anyone stunning views and a nice quiet peaceful ..."
Great place we'll recommend to anyone stunning views and a nice quiet peaceful place where you can relax and unwind the only issue I had was the heating wasn't very warm when we woke up but later in the day was fine
-
"Delighted with the property."
Absolutely everything we could have wanted was there, it was as all clean and well maintained. The attention to detail was impressive.
-
"Very quiet relaxing place."
Beautiful views.
-
"We had a very enjoyable week at Solway Cottage, the view from the balcony was fantastic, watching the Solway tides and the view over to Scotland along with the wildlife and at the end of the day we saw some great sunsets."
A visit to the Kings Arms a few minutes walk down the village is also recommended
-
"Beautiful cottage in a fantastic spot!"
Didn't want to leave and booked again for next year!! Highly recommend, one of the best!!!
-
"Perfect cottage, friendly village."
Good for walks and cycling. Weather wasn't great but view across estuary changes by the hour. Wild lizard walk 5 min drive away, unusual to see wild. Will return in the future.

"We loved staying at Solway Cottage."
We were so cosy, it didn’t matter that the weather wasn’t always good. The views were fantastic and fascinating to watch the tides with the bird life. Never tired of seeing that. Everything was great, the beds, bathrooms and kitchen with an abundance of gadgets and utensils! Quiet and peaceful. Also Bill and Patsy were welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend this cottage.

"What an exceptional cottage this is."
It has everything. Great off road parking, peace and quiet, a proper bath and amazing views from the lounge and patio - especially at sunset. We’ve been holidaying in cottages in the UK for many years and this is without a doubt one of the best places that we’ve stayed in. We were very fortunate to have found a few days that were not already booked up. Not too far from The Lake District but without the crowds and commercialisation. Whilst I with hindsight it was clearly shown on the booking site but it isn’t something I feel the need to check at the time - very few cottages in my experience have an earlier leaving time (9.30am) or later check in time (5pm) and certainly not both! Maybe a hangover from COVID ‘rules’. The only negative (and which certainly won’t apply to most people) is that being tall my feet went past the end of the mattresses (every bed was tried out to try and find a solution) and there was a low wooden bedstead (maybe not the right word?) at the end and every time I turned over I woke up. Maybe some kind of upholstered pad on the tops might help? I found a temporary solution by wedging a pillow between the mattress and the wood - but not ideal. Otherwise, absolutely perfect! Thanks.

It really makes Patsy & my day when we get such an encouraging response. We are looking to amend the arrival/departure times for next season and we'll have a look at the option for a temporary cushion head/tail piece. Thank you again for staying with us. "A wonderful Cottage: clean, spacious, well-equipped, warm and welcoming."
Amazing views- we were so glad of our telescope to watch the seabirds. Bill & Patsy were ideal hosts: very welcoming but unobtrusive. We would thoroughly recommend, and pray God’s blessings on them and all who stay in this lovely place.

"Solway Cottage was a lovely place to stay for 4 nights and we found that it was really clean, comfortable and well equipped to cater for all of of our needs."
The bottle of sparkling wine and chocolates was a nice gesture for us on arrival. We had plenty of information sent to us prior to arriving and there's loads of local information in the cottage. The weather wasn't very good for us but it was what we expected and didn't stop us getting out and about, although it would have been nice to sit out on the decking and admire the views over The Solway and across to Scotland. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider a return visit. Thank you Bill and Patsy
-
"Not really sure what else I can add to what has already been said about this amazing place."
If anything the pictures don't do it justice. We have had an amazing stay and really didn't want to tear ourselves away from the view. We will definitely return. Everything was perfect and we have nothing negative to say about Solway cottage.

"An amazing property with fantastic views."
The cottage was warm, light and beautifully kitted out. The lovely kitchen / living space was comfortable and well thought out. How lovely to look out of the windows at breakfast time....March is not the ideal month to sit out on the balcony. A huge supply of books and magazines kept us occupied when we were not watching the ebb and flow of the tidal estuary and and wading birds or photographing the sunsets. Beg or borrow binoculars for your holiday, we are nature lovers so had ours. We spent time drawing and painting the gorgeous view across the estuary towards the Scottish coast the light quality there is out of this world. There are lots of nature reserves along the coast right down to Maryport and beyond as well as plenty walking opportunities. Should you need to have a city fix, we recommend a trip into Carlisle and visit to Tullie House, Carlisle Cathedral and Bookends, there are the usual shops but we prefer country holidays. Both Tullie House and the Cathedral have lovely cafes. Patsy and Bill have put a lot of thought into this property (my visiting friend and I had a lovely chat with Bill in the garden) and we are looking forward to a return visit because we only skirted the edges of places we had planned to visit. I don't think I will ever hear the sound of Curlew and Oyster Catchers without thinking of Solway Cottage. Staying here is a great opportunity to discover the other side of Cumbria as well as a part of Scotland that is unspoiled too.

"As always such a lovely stay at the cottage."
Would highly recommend staying here, views are amazing as well the community. Many thanks.
-
"Alastair, standing in for the owners who were abroad on holiday, was extremely kind and helpful."
The view from the lounge is stunning, and it is a quality cottage. The wifi code was eventually found amongst other informative literature but may I suggest that its prominence is checked by the cleaners on a Friday pm? This would have saved time for both Alastair and us. The bottle of cava and the chocolates were appreciated! The two dogs next door barked continuously on our last day, when we stayed in. Golden oldies like us might find the shower room by the front door inconveniently far but a lovely spot, a very up-to-date cottage, and though we would not return I encourage others to do so!
-
"Excellent property, lovely view, comfortable, homely with lots of information on the surrounding area."
-
"Thank you. We had a wonderful stay over Xmas."
The property is perfect and so well equipped with absolutely stunning views.
-
"A well-equipped cottage with fabulous views over the Solway river to Scotland."
Peaceful and relaxing. High standard of furnishings and little extra touches that made it homely. The owners gave excellent information pre-arrival and were non-intrusive during our stay, but close by if needed. A great assortment of local maps, books, etc. to use for reference and places to visit. Local pub within easy walking distance and a cute little Pear Tree Tearoom with delicious home-baking. Easy access to The Lake District, coast and Scotland. Binoculars to watch the birds and wildlife would have been handy, but can't fault the facilities at this wonderful cottage and would definitely recommend to family and friends.
-
"Beautiful setting, amazing views."
well equipped holiday home and spotlessly clean. comfortable and very relaxing.
-

"Great week at Solway cottage even the weather was better than forecast."
Really peaceful area with very little traffic and a great local pub five minutes away.Loved sitting out on the decking watching the birds in the trees and on the Firth.Lucky to see the fishermen haaf netting for salmon and sea trout,Would highly recommend the cottage and area thanks Bill and Patsy the cottage provided everything we needed for our stay.
-
"A lovely week in an immaculate cottage with a view to die for."
Fully equipped for a luxury holiday. Excellent hosts. Bear in mind if you are not a walker or bird watcher, Bowness on Solway is a fair drive from things to do.
-
"Fabulous views overlooking the estuary."
Extremely well equipped cottage. Lovely meals at both the pub and the bistro in the village.
-
"Great lounge view."
Too bad weather wasn't conducive to outside seating. This meant we were a bit cold on a morning. Bathrooms cold and no warm towel rail. Unable to adjust preset underfloor heating. Couple more pillows would be good. Grab rail inside shower essential really. Great owners Patsy & Bill. Sorry to leave as very peaceful and quiet.
-
"We would like to say thank you for letting us stay at your wonderful cottage views where amazing lots of wildlife gardens beautiful host very welcoming WE had sunshine the whole week which made for a great stay ."
And at night the stars where wonderful to see . Also the pub two minutes away did good food ,
-
"Lovely accommodation overlooking the Solway Firth and Scotland beyond."
Very clean, comfortable and very well equipped kitchen Great circular walks nearby including the start, or the end, of Hadrians Wall path. Beautiful views Bill and Patsy have thought of Everything which made the stay even more relaxing Thank you...

"Wonderful, clean, well stocked cottage."
Beds were so comfortable and the onsite owners were lovely, helpful and supportive. Enjoyed the welcome chocolates and wine. Definitely book again if planning to visit Cumbria in the future. A definite 10/10
-
"Lovely cottage with such an amazingly beautiful view."
Really enjoyed our stay there, lovely winter walks on the sands and down quite country lanes. Local pub welcoming with good food. Could have driven a short distance into the lakes but were contented to stay in the area. Definitely one to book again.
-
"We enjoyed our stay at Solway Cottage."
The location was excellent, with fantastic views across the Solway Firth and shore walks accessible from the front door. The cottage was well equipped and we appreciated the owner's efforts with the extra touches (e.g. a bottle of fizz, comprehensive visitor guide and local maps). Our only issue was with the sofas. Like previous visitors, we found them uncomfortable. They really do need replacing.
8/12/21 Reply email informing of actual delivery date after 16 weeks waiting! Promised Fri 10th Dec! Jan'22 - Finally arrived after New Year! 8cm higher seats than previous settees Property Owner
-
"Another fantastic week off, this is our third visit."
We're just in love with this place. Great views, cosy atmosphere, you can relax to your heart's content. Will be going again soon hopefully ☺️.
-
"Amazing cottage, breathtaking view."
Even the weather couldn’t spoil it. Just what was needed.
-
"Overall a pleasant stay with good location and views."
However, as others have commented, the leather settees were quite uncomfortable, saggy and slippy. They really do need replacing.
E-MAIL RESPONSE FROM SOLWAY COTTAGE 26/05/21 TO FEEDBACK: “Always great to hear when we get things right & thank you for pointing out the issue about the seating!. Patsy ordered new (higher seat) settees in Aug in line with guests’ advice". UPDATE: They finally arrived in Jan '22 and the seats are 8cms higher! Property Owner

"A beautiful cottage,great facilities,wonderful view,great hosts."
We had a lovely resful stay.
-
"This place is just perfect."
The photos don’t do it justice - the views from the lounge and bedrooms are just incredible. The cottage has everything you need. Fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, lovely outdoor furniture & BBQ. Ånd so much more. Books, games, maps, 3 TVs. And everything spotlessly clean. Bill & Patsy the owners could not have been more helpful or friendly. Information prior to arrival and whilst we were there was spot on. They really have done such a fab job with this place. If you can tear yourself away from the view, there’s so many local walks and a really good pub close by (Kings Arms). We also ventured into Scotland a few times as well as driving through the northern Lake District. And finally, the sunsets were just amazing. A perfect home from home and def one to return to again.

"The view from the property was excellent and the owners were very keen to help ..."
The view from the property was excellent and the owners were very keen to help with anything we would definitely recommend this property
-
"This cottage is one of the cleanest and best equipped we have been in."
Wonderful view from the balcony. The owners, who live on site made us feel very welcome.
-
"Nice cottage and friendly owners."
Fantastic views over the Solway Firth. Couldn't fault anything.
-
"This is our second stay at this beautiful cottage, will be returning later this year as well!"
Me and my girlfriend love this place, its honestly a little gem. Its right next to the seashore, to enjoy walks and just watching the sunset. It was an amazing experience. There are also woodland trails you can do nearby if you like to walk. Its only 30 minutes from the nearest big town for all your shopping needs. Bill and Pat are so lovely and accommodating, would recommend this place to everyone.
-
"The cottage was everything and more."
Fantastic views. Lots of different walking routes to take the kids on as-well as days out in various local seaside towns. Owners are very helpful in little hints and tips with places to go when you see them. Food at the local pub is amazing and homemade, personal choice is to takeaway and eat on the balcony at the cottage overlooking the firth in peaceful surroundings. Nice little bistro style next to the pub also. Beds are very comfy. Would highly recommend.
-
"Excellent hosts, wonderful views of Solway and part of Scotland."
Wonderful village Pub 'Kings Arms'. Smashing home made food. A cottage you would want to return to.
-
"This cottage is beautiful and spotless with the most amazing views ever."
You park your car in front of the owners house which is off road and safe and you just have a short walk down the side of their house to Solway Cottage The cottage is very spacious. and private, it is lovely and warm too.The owners were lovely people .Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen with a good sized 50/50 fridge freezer. Also a washer and a drier in a small utility room. The bedrooms have a wardrobe in each room which has plenty on shelves in it but limited hanging space as it only has one small rail that is hung depth ways as apposed to width ways like usual rails (not a prob for us as we used both wardrobes) The bed was really comfy. The only thing that we did not like here were the sofas which are really low and laid back so not comfy at all as you slide off them and we would say that they are ready for replacing . We would definitely return here but only once we know that the sofas have been replaced which the owner says will be in November. We did not like to mention this to the owners, as they were such lovely people but I think there are aware of this problem as other guests have commented on this too, it did not put me off when booking this cottage as I thought it might just be people moaning about nothing but they are really uncomfortable. Really beautiful cottage though with some lovely walks from the door along the estuary shore. Set in a lovely small village with a smashing pub, two lovely cafes and all the villagers that we meant were really friendly. Look out for the lovely lady in the cottage the other side of the cattle grid selling painted pebble outside her cottage, they are so cute. Thank you for our wonderful stay in your beautiful cottage .
-
"Amazing place to have a holiday."
Owners were extremely friendly and helpful. The view is so beautiful you could spend all your days on the verandah of the property, however there are some lovely areas to visit. Would definitely recommend this property, but book early it is very popular.
-
"Wonderful property and lovely helpful hosts."
-
"Very relaxed holiday, watching the tides and birds from the lounge window."
Wellington boots needed for walking along the shore.
-
"Absolutely everything about Solway Cottage, would highly recommend it."
That's why we went for a second stay. We love it & would be back for the third time soon.
-
"Comfortable cottage with everything needed."
The view was spectacular
-
"Stunning location, in a beautifully furnished holiday cottage, with really thoughtful touches, it was like 'home from home'."
We loved the fresh flowering orchid, the candles, bottle of fizz and chocolates. The cottage owners Bill and Patsy, were helpful and friendly. The village of Bowness on Solway is a special place, very tranquil and pretty, which makes for a really relaxing holiday. It was lovely sat on the decked area of the cottage, for lunch or an early evening drink, or listening to the owl calls at dusk and later watching glorious sunsets and stars. We shall probably go back.

"We had a lovely 2 week break at Solway Cottage."
The accommodation is lovely, extremely clean, well equipped and the beds are very comfortable. The view from the cottage is stunning and watching the tide come in and out was fascinating. Our daughter loved going down to the estuary when the tide was out and collecting shells from the mud! A really peaceful place to stay with plenty of walks and places to visit and we have come back feeling very relaxed and distressed. I would thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage.
-
"A very relaxing and peaceful stay."
We were made to feel very welcome and the decking at the back is the place to be on an evening!
-
"A lovely cottage with fantastic views in a very peaceful location."
We highly recommend it and hope to return.
-
"Outstanding cottage with panoramic views."
Shall definitely return, if you like calm and a place to de-stress, this is for you. Routes to many Cumbrian places of interest are easily accessible, although drives can be half hour to an hour, drives are on quiet, scenic routes. My husband and I enjoyed every moment, staying at the cottage or tootling by foot or car, throughout naturalistic Cumbria. Do not let the fact that the cottage is on the grounds of the owners. The cottage gives you absolute privacy because the cottage has been well thought out for maximum sea view and isolation. On the other hand the owners are available should you require information or help. The whole village was friendly and it has been refreshing to experience a totally different way of life along with a vast range of ecosystems. Next time shall take cycles, perfect flat quiet roads. If you need to get off life's conveyor belt and restore mindfulness, this place is for you. Felt covid protected, more so than at home, owners very clued up on safety measures and went beyond what was required. Exceptional!

"We enjoyed sitting on the decking looking at the fabulous view across the solway firth to Dumfries and Galloway."
The cottage is fantastic and the best equipped for self catering that we have ever had.Would thoroughly recommend.
-
"The cottage is beautiful and very well equipped."
It was very clean. It has lovely views. The owners are onsite and ready to help all they can. We would definitely return but unfortunately we found the furniture very uncomfortable, the leather sofas were soft and you slide off the all the time, they have no support. The dining chairs are stools. But we are glad we visited.

"Exactly what it said in the brochure."
Peace, quiet, great location, so relaxing. Bill n patsey were lovely and eager to please. Couldn't fault it. Picture on the website didn't do it justice. Lovely cottage.
-
"The cottage was amazing, very clean and had every thing you could ever need."
The location was stunning, peaceful and quiet. The owners left you alone but were near by if needed. A nice pub close by for meals and drinks.
-
"Peaceful area, interesting history and bird life."
-
"A beautiful cottage with amazing panoramic views from the living area and outside decking,a number of steps down and your on the beach, lovelly hosts Bill & Patsy nice pub with good food only 150 yards away, the start / end of Hadrians wall is in the village, perfectly located for trips to Carlisle,Scotland, and the Northern lakes."
Well recommended.

"View from main lounge is fantastic and almost like an ever changing picture ."
-
"Very good accommodation although the settees were very low and not the most comfortable."
The bed was ok except for the wooden headboard. The view from from the cottage across the water to Scotland was unbelievable.
-
"The cottage was well presented."
It was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The views from the deck outside the lounge were truly spectacular especially in the evening as the sun was setting. It was private and had everything needed to make a perfect holiday. The hosts Bill and Patsy were just lovely and I would highly recommend this property
-
"A really super, very comfortable and well appointed cottage with views to die for of the Solway Firth."
Look out for the most spectacular sunsets. Also look out for the locals in action fishing with the centuries old haaf netting method. There are plenty of places within reasonable driving distance to visit.
-
"Solway Cottage is a wonderful combination of a peaceful coastal retreat with all mod cons."
The view from the lounge (and bedrooms) is simply stunning, and the ebb and flow of the tide is incredibly restful and calming. The kitchen is so well equipped it is a real home from home, and there are some lovey touches for example the welcome drinks and chocolates. Highly recommended- book with confidence as you won’t regret it, pack your binoculars, walking boots and camera and you will be in for a treat!
-
"Wow what a view of the Solway just perfect to unwind."
Re booked for next year so that says it all.
-
"Solway cottage is located in a lovely village and has the most fantastic views you can lose yourself in whilst sat on the cottage decking, the owners are extremely helpful and not intrusive."
The village pub is fantastic very friendly and the food is gorgeous.

Will definitely be back for another holiday. Bill and Patsy were very attentive, best hosts ever.
-
"This cottage has an amazing view over the Solway."
It is extremely comfortable, warm & and very well presented. The cottage worked very well for 2 couples sharing as there are 2 bathrooms. We would all thoroughly recommend this cottage and it’s friendly owners.
-
"The view from Solway Cottage is stunning."
It is a perfect location for exploring the North Lakes, the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and the beautiful Solway coast which is a hidden gem. The cottage is warm, cosy, comfortable and well equipped.
-
"Loved everything."
The view is amazing. Bill showed us round the property and told us some of the history of the area. Thankyou to Bill and Patsy for the goodies. We will go back again in the future.

Solway cottage is the most perfect holiday cottage, the cottage interior is very modern and stylish with everything you could need and more, wow factor views large private balcony to enjoy the changing tides, sunsets, starry skies, wildlife etc a slice of heaven, thank you Bill+Patsy

"Magnificent!"
Having used Sykes Cottages on several previous occasions we think this cottage, its facilities & its location make it the best so far! We did have reservations about the cottage being in such close proximity to the owners' home but this was unfounded. The cottage & its balcony are totally private & give spectacular views over the Firth. The cottage is really well laid out & provides everything one requires during the stay. And the area is really special, with so many great walks over different landscapes & habitats. All in all a truly special place!

"Solway Cottage is located in the quiet village of Bowness-on-Solway; local amenities include one pub and the Wallsend tea room, which provided nice lunches and a good selection of cakes."
The surrounding area is both beautiful and peaceful, and the cottage is probably the best place to appreciate this, as it has spectacular views over the water, with a lovely decked area out back with nice seating that lets you take full advantage. You can also walk straight down from the decking to the beach through a terraced garden; while well maintained, the stairs are quite steep in places, so not for those with mobility issues - although within the cottage access is all on one level. The accommodation itself was comfortable, and the hosts appear to have thought of all those little details - nice towels and toiletries in the bathrooms (there are two); plenty of cupboard space in the bedrooms, and a useful laundry area with washing machine and dryer. The kitchen was particularly well equipped, and the coffee machine was a bonus. Good selection of books and dvds to suit many tastes; and lots of information provided on local history, flora and fauna. The owners were very friendly and helpful; as was the bottle of milk, wine and chocolates in the fridge on our arrival - all the necessities! Fresh flowers added another welcoming touch. All in all, this was a lovely place to stay, and I'd be happy to return anytime.
-
"Lovely cottage & very well equipped."
In fact for us is was better equipped than needed! Views from the cottage are lovely and saw some stunning sunsets. Situated in quiet village with pub with food just 2 minutes walk. Owners very nice & sent us good directions to get there including a stop at Asda. Bottle of wine, milk & maltesers in the fridge were also a nice welcome. Only downside was the hoards of flies which I suppose is what you get in hot weather in the countryside, but if this would bother you it should be taken into account. All in all we had a lovely week and if it wasn't for the flies we'd love to return.
-
"The views and scenery were stunning , the wildlife was great to watch , the location was good and the owners were wonderful and very helpful ."
-
"Set in a wonderful location, with amazing views."
The cottage was fabulous and, the care and attention to detail by the owners was five star, everything that you could want was provided.

Great location great cottage great views peace & quiet great hosts nothing negative would certainly return to this cottage if only for the relaxation it offers
-
"The property is of a very high standard."
The facilities are second to none. Everything you could need in the kitchen and more. The beds are very comfy. Everything was high quality. Breathtaking views from the decking and the nature watching was excellent. The village is quiet, but has a good pub with good food. Lots to do in the surrounding areas, but a car is essential. The owners are close by and very helpful, but do not invade your privacy. All in all a very nice place to visit. I would definately recommend this cottage to my friends and family.
-
"Spotlessly clean, beautifully presented, this cottage is a real credit to its owners Bill & Patsy."
The high quality of all the furnishings, fitments and fixtures elevates it way above any of the many other rental cottages we have ever stayed in. Its warm, quiet, everything feel solid and the views are terrific. The owners are next door for questions and help if required, but allow one privacy, the perfect hosts! By nature I am picky and can generally find things that trouble me at these rental cottages but in this instance apart from a couple of minor nit-picks too trivial to mention, I am at a loss to come up with anything negative about the cottage that I feel I should warn others about. We really enjoyed coming back to the cottage after a day's touring and walking, so much so we preferred to cook and "chill out" that eat at pubs and restaurants. The sun sets on the Scotland side of the Solway Firth so every evening one is treated to a display of colour, as a landscape photographer I really apprecaited that! I guess my only area of slight dissapointment was not about the cottage at all but just how little there really is to do in the area. We found ourselves travelling to the Lake District every day and its quite a journey taking 1.5 hours or longer. Of course we knew that when we booked I just found the Solway Firth a tad boring, we didnt see a single boat or any activity all week, and its quite a monotonous beach to walk. What I am trying to say is if you are happy at this location then the cottage is absolutely perfect, but if your main interest is in the Lake District it might be a bit far from the "action". Overall this is a 5 star property. Lovely views, terrific interior and exterior and above all it has that intangible sense of feeling at home and comfortable.
-
"We had a fantastic week."
Solway Cottage is a home from home with a fantastic view. Would highly recommended.
-
"The cottage was very clean, comfortable and warm and well set out with plenty of space."
Information was provided for things to do around the area. The chocolates and wine were a nice touch. The view from the cottage was exceptional, we could watch the weather unfold from the comfort of the sitting area and enjoyed watching and photographing the wildlife around the cottage.
-
"We had a brilliant stay at Solway Cottage, it was so much more than what we expected!"
The view was breathtaking no matter what time of day it was, our stay was so relaxing and peaceful. The cottage itself was equipped with everything you could ever need, plus more! It was clean, modern, comfortable and homely. Felt like a home away from home. We are already talking about re-booking for spring! All in all a fantastic, beautiful place. Thanks so much.
-
"A romantic and remote setting with a very glamorous view that is great to watch in all weathers - we were blessed with a clear night time sky and star-gaze!"
The cottage is luxuriously equipped with good quality appliances, crockery and pots and pans. The beds were super comfy and rooms had black-out blinds to aid a good night's sleep. The underfloor heating and electric blankets meant that we were toasty warm even when the temperature was below freezing. The nearest village shop is a short drive away but we would recommend stocking up on supplies at the Asda at Carlisle or bringing your own provisions if staying for short break, there is plenty of space in the fridge, cupboards and separate freezer. There is a wonderful coastal walk from the doorstep and a great village pub in which to drink beer and eat cumberland sausage and chips when you return. This is totally unspoilt coastline in an area of outstanding natural beauty. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.
-

"It's perfect."
-
"We have had several holidays in rented cottages, and this was without doubt the best."
Most cottages supply enough crockery and cutlery for the amount of visitors, and this is great, but Solway cottage had so much that we could have had a good party, and still enough left for breakfast next morning. Solway cottage looks lovely in the brochure but even better in real life when you stand on the patio and gaze across the Firth to Scotland while drinking your first cup of tea of the day ! It is so well thought out and presented that you could easily live there , now there's a thought !!

About the location
BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY
Wigton 10 miles; Carlisle 13 miles.
The village of Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the west of the city of Carlisle. The village has a pub and a tea room and Hadrian’s Wall stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, with the walk being defined as a ‘National Trail’. The surrounding area is rich in bird life visiting the sand dunes, salt marsh, shingle beds, and peat mosses, and there are many viewpoints and lay-bys, perfect for spotting the waders: oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing, knot, dunlin, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwit, redshank, and turnstone. In 1869 a rail line, the Solway Junction Railway, was opened between Bowness and Annan in Scotland, connecting to the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The 1 mile and 176 yard long iron girder viaduct across the water was damaged by an ice build-up in 1875, and again in 1881. It was repaired and continued as a passenger train until 1914 when it became a freight train until 1921, before finally being demolished in 1934. Nearby, the market town of Wigton and the city of Carlisle are popular centres for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Wigton also has a weekly market taking place every Friday and also boasts a theatre. The Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is 16 miles away, whilst Keswick and the heart of the Lake District are reached in 40 minutes' by car. A wonderful base for exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
Please note: Solway Cottage is situated in the grounds of the owner's property, Maia House. All outlooks are across the Solway Firth estuary towards Scotland.
Please note: This property accepts a minimum stay of 3 nights only.
