  • "Another fantastic week at The Barn - thanks Jayne and Graeme!"

This is our second year staying in this property. We're a family of three, who like to walk and don't like the crowds of the towns, so The Barn is perfect. The kitchen is well stocked, with tea/coffee/sugar provided and milk and a couple of treats waiting when you arrive. I cooked meals I would at home whilst we stayed. The shower is amazing, there's a downstairs loo (not listed, but very welcome) and lots of toilet paper. The front room has enough seats for four people and a footstool which hides games, leaflets and walking books. Having seen previous reviews, I can confirm that there is a coat rack and a hand rail and to me, plenty of room for families. Location wise, we chose the Barn so we could access the Western Lakes, plus Keswick and Ullswater easily. Cockermouth is so close, where you can find an Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury's, plus a butcher/deli. From here, we've drivrn and walked around Loweswater, Buttermere & Haystacks, Ennerdale, Aira Force, Grasmere & Rydal Water and Derwentwater. Plus walked up Catbells, Scafell Pike and Walla Crag. For rainy days, we've gone to Honister Slate (quarry tour and climb thr mine), Puzzling Place and Go Ape/orienteering at Whinlatter and Grizedale. On very rainy days, we've stayed in the Barn and played family games - some provided (connect 4, battleships, bullseye) and others we brought with us. We judged walking conditions on whether we could see the fells out of the lounge and main bedroom windows! Thanks again!

We did not find any of the issues mentioned in other reviews. The cottage was spotlessly clean and the underfloor heating was very warm. The views from the lounge and bedroom will be forever etched in my memory. Jane and Graeme were the perfect hosts. Helpful but not in your way. The location is great. The Melbreak Hotel is just a stroll away and serves delicious gourmet style food. There is no detectable road noise. We can thoroughly recommend the Barn. Thanks to Jayne and Graeme for the wine, milk, tea and coffee waiting for us on arrival.

Thank you both for your lovely comments. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Very nice property in a great location for the Northern part of the Lake District."

Generally well maintained and most of our needs were met. Little things like nowhere to hang coats etc to dry off ( after all we are in the wettest part of the country and perfect for walking), the offroad parking is for us a neccessity but might be a problem to access with a larger vehicle. We stay lots of places and some feel like home as soon as you walk in, but even after a week we didn't feel it here - don't know why. Owners pleasant enough. Would we come back again ? Maybe.

We are really sorry to hear that you did not feel at home in the Barn. We do everything we can to make all our visitors feel welcome. Regarding the coat rack we have been waiting for weeks for a joiner to install one & a stair rail. Hopefully this will be done shortly. Thank you for comments Jayne & Graeme Property Owner

There are items that were missing from the inventory which were highlighted in the visitors book but not sure how the owners would react to this criticism as perhaps a little more thought in recognising people have different tastes and expectations and tend to think that this or that is missing Overall the property has its limitations true but I think that I would stay again just for that wonderful view

when we arrived we were very pleased about the Barn. it was just enough to accommodate the three adults we booked for. it was clean and Jayne and Graeme had left wine and chocolates under the tree for us which was lovely. graeme did come and introduce himself to us and added if we needed anything we should just ask. we did need a spanner to put my granddaughters bike together and Graeme dutifully supplied it. there were just a few niggles. Some of the pillows didn't have pillowslips on but a sort of see through netting. there wasn't a freezer to store the frozen foods we had brought. but these didn't spoil our stay.

I was made to feel very welcome and everything was well laid out and very comfortable. It was a joy to be up each morning and watch the sun rise on the magnificent view of the fells. This part of west Cumbria is overlooked by most tourists, in spite of the easy access to all the attractive aspects, which makes it an ideal place for a tranquil stay. The property is in a very good location for visiting other places. Although there is a road out front it does not affect the peace and quiet. The only thing that may be a problem for some people especially in colder months you have to ring the owners if you want the central heating on and some people may not like to do this. There is a small heater which we had to use to warm the bedrooms and when we gad a shower.

Like your dream home. Stylish interior. Comfy beds. Gorgeous bathroom with a rainfall shower in a beautiful roomy enclosure. The barn conversion is equipped with everything you could need in the kitchen. At this time of year what matters most is being in a comfortable temperature, the underfloor heating downstairs, radiators upstairs and access to the thermostats ensured when the outside temperatures dipped to -5C, you could ensure the house stayed warm. The best recommendation is when you would like to return, which I definitely will do!

  • "This is a lovely clean, bright and very cosy cottage done to a high standard."

We arrived to find wine, biscuits and tea making items to welcome us which was a lovely surprise. The view from the front windows were amazing a treat to wake up to. The cottage is very close to the hotel, and we ate there a number of times during our holiday and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Walks round Ennerdale and Lowes Water are very scenic and easy to do, the added bonus is that they are not as busy as the larger lakes. Buttermere and Crummock Water are well worth a trip but are busier so would advise a earlier or much later start to avoid car parking congestion. Keswick is a nice town, and the Lakeland Pencil Museum is very interesting. Walk down to Derwent water and to Friar's Crag for a super view of the lake and maybe take a boat trip round the lake. Muncaster Castle is a must, the castle is interesting and there are fantastic birds of prey demonstrations. The feeding of the herons in the late afternoon are worth waiting to see as they come very close up so you can get some great photos. Just down the road is a Heritage Railway and well worth a trip as the journey is very scenic. We had a great week and would recommend both the cottage and the area.

About the location

WORKINGTON

Maryport 6 miles; Cockermouth 7.7 miles; Bassenthwaite Lake 23 miles.

Workington is an ancient market and port town on the west coast of Cumbria, based at mouth of the River Derwent. The town has a selection of shops, bars and two theatres, as well as five churches and history dating back to Roman times, with forts positioned on the coast as coastal defences. Curwen Hall is a striking ruin, which was originally built around a pele tower that dates back to the 14th century and was used to shelter Mary Queen of Scots on her last flight to Scotland before her execution. In more recent time, Workington was known for the production of high quality iron ore and mining, and the town’s industrial history can be learnt at the maritime museum based on the cliffs in nearby Whithaven. The western side of the Lake District National Park can be reached in less than half an hour’s drive, to the west is the Solway Firth and its designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and to the east are the Lakeland Hills. A wonderful base for exploring the Cumbrian coastline.
