A beautiful setting, well equipped, there was little that could be improved! It really was like a home from home for us and rest assured we'll be back. Craig was out and about on his farm, but always had time for a chat if we saw him, and was so quick to replace a lightbulb that we found on our first evening. We've just got home from a good week in Hollows. The cottage is right next to the River Esk. Opening the bedroom window at night gave a soothing background sound that soon sent me off to sleep. During the day, quiet roads and woodland paths gave places to walk and relax straight from the front door. Or sometimes I just enjoyed sitting in the sun in the large garden. The wood provided for the fire was well-dried and soon provided a warm, homely blaze in the evening. Many thanks for all the hard work that has gone into providing and running this place.

We've now stayed in 4 of Sykes cottages over the past 4 years, all brilliant and top notch. But, this one is up there at number 1. A credit to the property owners, Craig, and the late Lucy, whom we felt was with us, smiling away, and seeing us enjoying our week with our Airedale Puppy, Millie. The Facilities of Lucy's Cottage had everything needed. It's Spotlessly clean, well presented and very peaceful, along with being in a superb location, next too the river Esk. There are plenty of beautiful walks to take your dog around this area. A visit to Annan and the Cafe Royal is a must if you like fish n chips. There the best myself and Mandy have ever tasted. Freshly caught over night, and served that same day. Mmmm lovely!! A visit to the lake district and Unsworth water, Carlisle too, is not far away. Overall 5 stars for everything. A big thank you to Alan, the gardener, whom we appreciated popping around now and again doing his work, keeping the outside clean. And of course, keeping him going with a friendly cuppa n lovely chat. Last but not least, Craig, the owner. A very nice gentleman to meet and talk too. We are very privileged having stayed in this Cottage, " Lucy's Cottage " You now have the legacy of Lucy. Compliments to you. A fantastic well needed magical stay. We will return. Thank You Craig. About the location

LANGHOLM

Lockerbie 18 miles; Carlisle 19 miles; Hawick 23 miles.

Langholm is a burgh on the River Esk in Dumfries and Galloway. From Mesolithic Man 9000 years ago, through Roman occupation to the notorious Border Reivers around the 16th century, Langholm has much history to share. The town developed around the textile industry, achieving a worldwide reputation for its woollens, expanding its population and earning the nickname of the ‘Muckle Toon’, or the Large Town. Langholm is also famous as the birthplace of Hugh MacDiarmid, the poet and Thomas Telford who was born just outside the town and after whom a road in the town is named. An unused Episcopalian church was converted into the Armstrong clan museum and was visited by astronaut Neil Armstrong in 1972 when he was made a freeman of the burgh. The town also hosts festivals for music, food and arts and the annual Common Riding draws many visitors. Within easy reach is Lockerbie, home to a good selection of bars and shopping facilities, as well as a jazz festival. A short drive from Langholm in the River Esk Valley is the Kagyu Samye Ling, the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre established in the West. As well as offering residential retreats, day visitors are welcome all year round to explore the temple or relax in the peace gardens and grounds.
